Currents January 2013 GLGA Members to Raise Scholarship Funds with Movie Two special member networking events are coming up to help raise funds for printing industry scholarships. Both events will feature a reception and screening of Linotype: The Film. Your $50 donation gets you a pre-show social hour (appetizers and cash bar), a showing of Linotype: The Film, and the opportunity to help grow the future workforce. Additional donations are welcome. The movie tells the charming and emotional story of the people connected to the Linotype (called the Eighth Wonder of the World by Thomas Edison) and how it revolutionized communication. Not just a trip down memory lane, the film examines the place that Linotype has in the age of new technology and introduces a new generation of operators who believe in the craft. Genius. Passion. And really hot metal. Page 3 Economics New Print Market Atlas Released, Re-Defines the Print Market Space The market space for printers has been changing dramatically for decades. While print on paper remains the keystone of the industry, “printers” are increasingly becoming “communications service providers” and moving into “integrated media.” This expansion of the print market space has created a new print-plus-business environment with new opportunities and challenges. Now, Printing Industries of America has formally redefined and quantified this market space in the U.S. utilizing data from the Economic Census. According to Dr. Ronnie H. Davis, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist, “at the macro level, print’s economic footprint is massive, diverse, and laden with opportunity for entrepreneurship, growth, and profitability. At the same time, there are significant challenges from a very competitive environment both among printers and between print and other media. By providing our members with accurate and updated industry parameters, they are able to make more informed decisions about the markets they serve or may want to serve.” The revised definition of the industry includes printing and related support activities (Economic Census code 323) plus print related media (Economic Census code 511). Print related media includes newspapers, periodicals, books, directory and mailing lists, and greeting cards and covers only activity directly related to print. Print’s U.S. economic footprint in 2011 totaled over $158 billion in annual shipments. The industry had almost 48,000 establishments employing just under 1 million employees. This localized data will be available via The Value of Print mobile app to make it even more valuable to members in marketing print and print related services to their customers. The app is available for free download for Apple, Android and Blackberry at www.printing.org/blog/11009. The 2011 Print Market Atlas may be downloaded from PIA’s website at www.printing.org/news/10957. Note that this data is no longer comparable to previous Printing Industries of America’s Print Market Atlases because they are using a different data source (analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns database). Rick Hartwig, Manager Environmental, Health and Safety Affairs, offers this tip on New Hazard Communication Standard. Adding Value to Print: A Survey of Novel Products, Finishing Techniques, and Materials Options by Manfred Breede Start Preparing Now for the New Hazard Communication Standard OSHA issued the final rule revising the Hazard Communication Standard (CFR 29 1910.1200) on May 26, 2012. Within the final rule, there are phase-in periods for compliance with two key deadlines. First, all employers must train their employees on the new SDS and label formats by December 1, 2013. Second, all employers must update alternative workplace labeling and their hazard communication program as necessary and provide any additional training to employees for newly identified physical or health hazards by June 1, 2016. While these dates may seem to give plenty of time to complete, they will arrive sooner than you realize. Therefore, it’s suggested that you start now to both understand and incorporate all the new elements into your hazard communication programs and ensure a smooth transition before the deadlines and before OSHA begins enforcement of the new requirements. BRANCH OUT To new contacts, technologies, and markets. Grow your business and cultivate your professional relationships at the definitive event for binding, graphic finishing, custom loose-leaf manufacturing, and suppliers to those industries. 2013 BIA ANNUAL CONFERENCE APRIL 81 0 Item Number: 1786 Member Price: $55.00 About This Book: While technological change in the graphic communication industry has always been with us, the rate of change throughout the ages has not been constant, as exemplified by the last 30 years, which have probably seen the most fundamental changes since printing was invented some 500 years ago. In the past technology shifts were about quality and production efficiency improvements, but the current advancements are profoundly different—they challenge print as a preeminent mass communication medium. New graphic media can emulate print realistically, but they also provide additional functionalities. This means that the public’s communication choices have increased, and printers must find avenues to enhance certain unique characteristics and peculiarities that are appealing to consumers and readers and which are not reproducible in other media forms. Adding Value to Print explores those avenues, particularly as they relate to the following: binding and finishing techniques and applications; the synergy of print and electronics; the many uses of various printing inks; the effectiveness and strategies related to proper substrate choice; and novel products and enabling technologies Indianapolis, Indiana Indianapolis Downtown Marriott Binding Graphic Finishing Networking Technology Custom LooseLeaf Opportunities Free Mailing Software Report Information Packaging Markets Growing your business to new heights since 1955 www.printing.org/biaconference Page 8 2012 Survey of Mailing Software is now available as a FREE pdf download for all GLGA members. Do you require customers to pre-pay the mailing postage or do you bill customers upon the completion of the job? We received a record 50 answers to this question. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to respond. Below is a sampling of the answers; to see the complete set, log in to the Members Only section of the GLGA website and click on Member Questions. We ask that they pay the postage, directly to the post office if possible, and if not we ask them to prepay. As a general rule, we insist that the customer pay the postage. If the customer refuses and we pay it and then invoice the customer, we will charge a mark up on the postage on the final invoice. Markup is usually 10%-15%. ALWAYS REQUIRE A PRE-PAY ON POSTAGE!!!!! I don’t think anyone should ever front the money for postage. If the customer doesn’t have the postage money he has no business doing a mailing. We typically will bill after the job is complete providing it is a good customer that we have a history with. Never front postage. We always get it up front unless it’s such a small amount (< $100) that it’s a hassle to deal with it, but we don’t even do that very often. In Indiana postage is taxable if invoiced, so there’s another very good reason not to bill it - for both the customer and the mailer. Prepay or use their permit number.
