Eating Organically - Michigan Organic Food and Farm Alliance
Why Local Organic Food? Freshness & Taste. Locally-grown fruits and vegetables are usually harvested within 24 hours of being purchased. Local Farmers grow and raise foods for their taste and nutrition, not for durability in harvest, shipping or storage. Nutrition. Nutritional value declines as time passes after harvest. Because locally-grown food is fresh, it is more nutritionally complete. Studies indicate that organically grown produce has more of certain nutrients. Cost. Our globalized food system produces cheap food, but it costs more than you think. We all pay the price when Farmers can’t grow crops at a profit, when water wells are contaminated by agricultural chemicals, and when store-bought foods look good, but are tasteless. When you buy local, organic foods, you get more for your money. Eating Organically A Guide to Michigan’s Organic and Local Farms and Related Businesses Avoid the Unknown. Produce grown with banned pesticides is imported into the United States. Meat may come from animals raised in confinement and fed hormones or antibiotics. Organic foods are produced and processed under special standards. Organically-raised animals have outdoor access and don’t get antibiotics or hormones. Organic crops are grown without the use of toxic chemicals and without GMOs. Regional Food Self-Reliance. Dependence on distant and global food sources leaves us vulnerable to supply disruptions. When you buy foods from local Farmers , you create a relationship of mutual support that enhances a community’s economic vitality, and keeps family farms alive. Protect the Environment and your Health. Farming with pesticides and synthetic fertilizers can cause water pollution, and leave unwanted pesticide residues on the food we feed our families. You can protect our natural resources, your health and improve the environment by choosing local, organic foods. Eating Organically is provided as educational information for use by the general public. This booklet may be reproduced in its entirety for public, noncommercial use provided that credit is given to MOFFA. Produced by the Michigan Organic Food & Farm Alliance (November 2007). Thanks to Jim Bingen, Lucy Hartlove, Eunice Hoeve, Nancy Jones Kaiser, Tracy Kolean, Holly Lubowicki, Stan Silverman, and Pat Whetham for their assistance 64 in making this edition possible. Michigan Organic Food & Farm Alliance 2008 Edition What is MOFFA? Join MOFFA Show Your Support for Local, Organic Foods The Michigan Organic Food & Farm Alliance is a non profit membership organization dedicated to promoting local, organic food that is good for our communities. Our members are part of a growing network of concerned citizens who care about how food is grown and where it comes from. We see local organic food and farms as a viable, vibrant alternative to the unsustainable, industrialized food system all around us. Since 1992, we have worked to raise public awareness about the need for a decentralized, earth-and people-friendly food system. We support Michigan’s organic Farmers , encourage other Farmers to adopt organic practices and to become certified, and create opportunities for local markets. We educate and encourage retailers, consumers and others in the food system to buy and eat locally-produced organic foods. Through publications, conferences, workshops, community festivals and other outreach efforts, we are working to enhance the supply of, and demand for, Michigan organic foods. MOFFA sponsors an annual organic conference in spring. We participate in several regional harvest festivals, and organic conferences and events to promote local organic food and farming. MOFFA invites everyone who shares our vision to help us create a better food future for Michigan. Join as a member, or make a contribution to support our continued work. Go to the back of this Guide for a membership form and more information, or visit our website at www.moffa.org Be a part of a growing network of concerned citizens who care about healthy food, how it is grown and where it comes from. Members of the Michigan Organic Food & Farm Alliance (MOFFA) receive a copy of Eating Organically by mail, along with our membership newsletter, Michigan Organic Connections, notice of meetings and events around Michigan related to local food systems, discounts on MOFFA events, and a periodic e-mail newsletter called the MOFFA News Group. Your Membership helps us host the Michigan Organic Conference each Spring. It also funds our participation in many important events for Michigan’s local organic food and farm community, including the following: Northern Michigan Small Farm Conference — last Saturday of January Regional Organic Harvest Festivals — September Great Lakes Expo, Organic Program Day — December Annual Membership Rates $30—individuals and families $20 — students $50—businesses under $50,000 budget $100—businesses over $50,000 budget Date: _______________________ ____New Indv/Family Member ____ New Business Member ($50) ____New Business Member ($100) I would like to make a donation to MOFA: ____________________ Name: ______________________________________________________________________ Business: ___________________________________________________________________ Michigan Organic Food & Farm Alliance PO Box 26102 • Lansing, MI 48909-6102 [email protected]; www.moffa.org (248) 262-6826 MOFFA promotes the development of food systems that rely on organic methods of food production and that revitalize and sustain local communities. 2 Address: ___________________________________________________________________ City/State/Zip: ______________________________________________________________ County: ___________________________________________________________________ Email: ____________________________________________________________________ Would you like to join our News Group email list to receive news, announcements and other updates (about once a month)? ______ Yes ______ No 63 Make checks payable to MOFFA Mail check and form to: MOFFA, PO Box 26102, Lansing, MI 48909-6102 MOFFA Eater’s Pledge • • • • • • • • • I pledge to Spend at least 10% or $10 of my weekly food budget on locally grown and made organic foods and/or those carrying the Michigan Farmers Pledge. Buy food directly from local farms that are either certified organic or have signed the Michigan Farmers Pledge as often as possible. Choose local organic or Farmer’s Pledge foods when possible and other local foods when those are not available. Learn to eat seasonally, enjoying fruits and vegetables at their proper time. Encourage locally owned food businesses to buy local organic and farmers pledge products and patronize them when they do. Try at least one new locally grown fruit or vegetable each week. Preserve fresh seasonal foods to enjoy later in the year (freeze, can, dehydrate). Plan at least one meal each week featuring local organic or farmers pledge foods for family, friends or neighbors. Choose regionally grown/produced and/or fair trade foods when organic or farmers pledge local foods are not available. About Eating Organically Change week-to-week, during a season or from year-to-year. The Michigan Organic Food and Farm Alliance (MOFFA) first published Eating Organically in 1995, one of Michigan’s first guides to organic and local foods. This is our sixth edition. Although we reviewed these listings, MOFFA has not verified or validated the farm and business information. The Guide has 403 listings for farms, farmers markets and related businesses, including 71 certified organic farms. This is not a complete list of all farms, markets and businesses offering local, organic foods in Michigan. We have included those businesses that made information available to us. If your business is not listed and you would like to be included in the future, contact us. If your farm or business information is incorrect, please let us know. Finding an organic farm. Under the federal National Organic Program (NOP), a farm can market its products as organic only if they are certified (unless exempt under the rule). Certification is a process that requires farms to follow certain production practices, keep records, and be inspected by an independent certification agency. Farms that sell less than $5000 per year may be exempt from the requirement for certification, but are still required to follow all recordkeeping and other rules of the NOP. Because we know people are looking for quality foods grown or raised without toxic chemicals, hormones or antibiotics, in ways that protect the earth and support local communities, we have included notes from farms or businesses that describe their approach and philosophy. Certified organic farms are We have identified those who are certified organic with a special symbol, and we list the name of their certification agency. Certification information can change; ask about current certification status. highlighted with this symbol: Farms that are not certified organic sometimes say they follow organic practices, or they may have the word ‘organic’ in their farm name. This is not the same as being a certified organic farm, so ask questions. If you have concerns about use of pesticides, fertilizers, synthetic chemicals, hormones or other animal treatments, ask the farmer to explain his or her practices. Most Farmers will be glad to have an informed and interested customer. Tips for Using This Guide Search by county. This Guide includes listings for farms, farmers markets and local businesses that offer organic/local food or related products and services. Information is organized by county (see back cover for a map of all Michigan counties.) If there are no listings for your county, consider those in surrounding areas. Call before you go. Before you visit any location, call to confirm their information. We included details about farm products, locations, business hours, etc. based on information provided by the businesses, but these details can 62 3 Check the index to find products or business/farm names. This Guide includes an index at the back by name (farm, farmer, Farmers market and businesses) and by specific products. Farm size is listed in acres. Cooperate with other farmers to preserve farmland and farming knowledge. • Cooperate with community leaders and members to create the most local food system possible in our area and a more sustainable way of life for all. • Practice conservation of energy whenever possible. • Support agricultural markets and infrastructures that enable small farms to thrive. • Sell Produce locally and regionally whenever possible. • Encourage biodiversity and practice its conservation on our farms. • Produce varieties of crops chosen for their nutritional quality rather than outer appearance and acceptability for shipping, whenever possible. • Use ethical business practices. • Respect our customers by listening to their needs and their wants in respect to types of crops and varieties, marketing variations and locations, and other concerns. • Educate our customers about the hidden costs of ‘supermarket’ food and the true costs of production. 61 for future generations of farmers. • Maintain the land in healthy condition Michigan Farmer’s Pledge MOFFA strongly encourages all farmers who are committed to the principles of organic farming and who follow organic practices to certify their farms with a certifying agency that is accredited with the USDA National Organic Program. MOFFA also understands that for valid personal, philosophical, and political reasons, many farmers do not wish to have their farms and their practices associated with the National Organic Program. MOFFA also understands that many farms in transition would appreciate having a “Michigan label” that represents their philosophy and practices. This is why the MOFFA Board decided to propose a Michigan Farmer’s Pledge. This pledge was created by the Northeast Organic Farming Association-New York (NOFA-NY) and with their approval MOFFA has adapted the Pledge for Michigan farmers. This pledge is not a substitute for certification, but for the reasons noted above, it does offer an opportunity for some Michigan Farmers to identify and promote their ecological practices. For a small fee, we hope to be able to make this pledge available during 2008. Michigan Eater’s Pledge If some farmers sign the Farmer’s Pledge, then MOFFA also suggests that eaters should pledge something back to Michigan farms. 60 ALLEGAN COUNTY Businesses ANTRIM COUNTY Farms Journeyman Restaurant Amy Cook and Matthew Millar 114 E.
