More than any other systems integrator, CS offers customers decisive advantages, revolutionizing information technology with heavy technical focus, for instance, in aerospace, defense/air traffic control, industry, and finance. For this, CS relies on a unique alliance that blends the expertise of its engineers and project managers with its capacity to handle large, complex projects. CS, architects of the convergence of communication and information systems Through its mastery of networking technology and applications, CS helps companies integrate their communications traffic and information systems. What is more, it eases systems evolution, so customers benefit from the opportunities of the extended enterprise, customer relationship management and e-business. Prime contractor for next-generation networks, CS partners globally with its customers, thanks to its end-to-end offering – plan, build and run – all offering high-tech value-added. CS, understanding each customer's business In-depth knowledge of each customer’s business, plus understanding how the Internet affects their processes and economic models, enables CS to design specific, relevant technological solutions. Furthermore, CS enriches its offering through mastery of the most important, dedicated software tools. CS C OMMUNICATION & S YSTÈMES 2000 1 ( Interview with the In contrast, the Security Division pursued its recovery throughout the year 2000, returning to positive results from operations in the second half. CS Security was sold in April 2001 to the Swedish firm, Gunnebo, a market leader in physical security. Yazid Sabeg Chairman and Chief Executive Office The Information Systems Division experienced a sharp slowdown in business, linked with the Y2K effect and the arrival of the 35-hour workweek in France. This impacted its results, the same as for the rest of the industry. CS Communication & Systèmes is now exclusively centered around IT services and boasts established, leading market positions and strengths. Moreover, 18 months ago the Information Systems Division began a reorganization through the merger of several companies, which at that time individually lacked the critical mass necessary to ensure their futures on their own. One side effect of this reorganization was temporarily to reduce our performance. It is the price we have to pay to achieve our current size, the 7th largest IT services company in France. Critical applications, e-Solutions, Network services, Facilities management, Critical applications, e-Solutions, Network services, How would you sum up 2000? In 2000, the company’s activity slumped. The Telecom Division suffered heavy losses during the financial year due to a combination of unfavorable factors, mainly delay in the rollout of new products, plus short supply and price hikes for components. In addition, R&D expenditures remained at a high level. This situation exacerbated a decline in the group’s cash flow. As for the Telecom Division’s divestment, an abrupt downturn in the telecoms marketplace, starting in September 2000, particularly perturbed the process. In the wake of this aggravation, no agreement could have been reached, and CS Telecom and CS Electronics, the division’s logistical and manufacturing arms, went into receivership May 2, 2001. Our objective is to come back to operating profit during 2001 As of the second half in 2000, we implemented an action plan (called “Booster”) to gain in productivity and ensure our progress. Our ambition is to pursue this course, intensifying this program so that we return to profitability during the financial year 2001. The favorable trend in our business, observed during the 3rd quarter and confirmed in the 4th quarter of 2000, the increase of our workforce, and the advance in the uptake of new orders, all indicate that we can look forward favorably to 2001. Today, CS Communication & Systèmes is a true it services company The group’s new balance, focus uniquely on the IT services business, is now a reality. Today, our group exclusively centers its skills on enabling the convergence of information and communication systems. CS C OMMUNICATION & S YSTÈMES 2000 2 ( Chairman What is the mission of CS? The CS mission is to provide its customers with secure, cutting-edge IT systems that enable innovative communication and information solutions. Our strengths are our capacity as a prime contractor for large, complex projects, our capacity as a solutions architect for the convergence of communication and information systems, and above all the complementary nature of our skills in integration, facilities management and engineering. This positioning fully reflects our competitive difference in the marketplace. In terms of critical applications, we work closely with customers for design and implementation in the areas of Aeronautics and Space (critical real-time avionics, simulators, air traffic management, maintenance, earth observation, and more), C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computing, Intelligence), and Highway Management (toll systems). Market leader in these sectors, we are entering a phase of active globalization and participate in large, international programs. Over the year, we consolidated our offerings in e-Solutions (Web business, CRM and workflow management) into our “Front Line” service suite. This is coherent with our positioning as an architect of complex infrastructures for distributed applications. This complete offering empowers customers to optimize their back- and front-office systems. From consulting to integration through security policy to change management, we make sense out of new technology. As an established network integrator, we continue to develop value-added offerings for the integration of advanced communication services. Specialists in voice-data-image convergence, CS proposes novel IP solutions for services, such as videoconferencing, videosurveillance, unified messaging, and even integration of IT and telephony. Moreover, CS has pioneered for several years in Europe and invested in a range of innovative security tools (PKI, cryptography, and digital signatures). This investment led us to create a new subsidiary, Trustycom, which is set to take off in 2001. The strength of CS is above all its global solutions, up to ultimate responsibility with a guarantee of results, through facilities management. We have defined for this activity a differentiation positioning around end-to-end system administration that enables us to accompany our customers in the management and evolution of their data processing resources. Critical applications, e-Solutions, Network services, Facilities management, Critical applications, e-Solutions, Network services, Our strengths are our capacity as a prime contractor for large, complex projects, our capacity as a solutions architect for the convergence of communication and information systems A new mode of management At my request and in order to adapt the mode of management of our group to its service business, the Board of Directors will put to a vote by the General Meeting of June 29, 2001, a proposal to modify the management structure of the group. This will transform the company into a company with a Supervisory Board and a Managing Board of Directors. Under these conditions, and depending on the prior approval of the General Meeting, I will become Chairman of the Supervisory Board. The Managing Board, contingent on their nomination by the Supervisory Board, will consist of François Leraillez, President, and Eric Blanc-Garin, Vice President. Consolidated group sales for the financial year 2000 amounted to FRF 3.336 billion (-6% over 1999). This was in part the result of a sharp drop in sales for the Telecom Division. Sales for the Information Systems Division, at FRF 2.302 billion, reached a level roughly equivalent to that for 1999. Business in France progressed 5 percent. Taking into account financial income of FRF 79 million, the current loss amounted to FRF -353 million. The extraordinary loss of FRF -397 million, integrates an accounting effect of FRF -293 million (provisions for depreciation of assets and risks) consecutive to placing CS Telecom and CS Electronics into receivership. The group’s share of the net loss, after goodwill, translates into a loss of FRF -702 million. Current cash flow is negative at FRF -338 million. What defines the CS mission for you? “ We are developing a geography-based information system (called SIG, in French) specifically for Air France, and a system for downstream management of technical flight plans. Our commitment is to develop a client-server DP solution, and build it out of standard components. We are also using our toolkit, GeoStar. As a software platform, we chose Geoconcept. The SIG allows juxtaposition of various data for relevant correlation on a single map. That means this is an authentic decision-making tool, developed in an object-oriented environment, a technology where CS is particularly strong. Once deployed, a team of dispatchers will use the system, which will greatly enhance their job function. Based at the Charles-de-Gaulle airport near Paris, these specialists will operate Air France dispatchers now have the new SIG to give assistance to pilots on long-haul flights. This high value-added application, which heralds the arrival of intelligent roadways, simplifies life for highway users throughout France. Managing subsidies by satellite Oniol (Office national interprofessionnel des oléagineux, or national office for the oilseed industry) awarded partnering companies, CS and SCOT, a contract for the development of a software solution to survey olive-growing lands, to have a precise assessment of olive harvests and so better manage farming subsidies. For this operation, CS mobilized two teams: one in Toulouse, designated the project main contractor responsible for delivery of a geography-based information system (SIG), and one in Aix-en-Provence, assigned to develop a system for computer-aided assessment (called SIA, in French). The role of SCOT is to use these tools to count the number of olive trees. This solution automatically counts olive trees, thanks to software that integrates a survey map, which is scanned and superimposed onto an aerial photograph of olive-growing land. A radically new sales tool and permanent trade fair, decopremier.com offers value- added services, both to suppliers and to users, who are interior architects. It was essential to propose a thoroughly innovative tool, which could federate a profession that is geographically diffuse, while preserving a spirit of independence. The choice of CS as prime contractor allowed us to rise to the challenge. Thanks to the skill of CS teams in virtual reality, all the objects contained in the database (over 1 million) were modeled in 3-D. This empowers interior architects to build their mockups directly from the site. This allows, for example, visualization of furnishings in 3-D, automatic upholstering of an armchair, or even, a virtual walk through a showroom. The gain in time and productivity is considerable, but above all it is a revolution for our business. CS C OMMUNICATION & S YSTÈMES 2000 21 ( ” e-Solutions Radio France Radio France an intelligent portal February 21, 2000, France Info plunged into an era of digital immersion. Since that day, all its broadcasts have been digitized, archived in a server, and are accessible with a mouse click. CS was the prime contractor of this cultural revolution, which now benefits all Radio France channels. To enable programmers to access this immense digital resource, CS developed a portal from a document server, using tools like ARISEM. A semantic knowledge base enables the portal to index, classify and archive all documents produced by the radio network: scripts, bulletins, scheduled programming, and recorded broadcasts. Patched into the Radio France intranet, the portal gives access to information via themed searches, using keywords and indexing software. The days when you had to telephone an operator and dictate your text are over. Today, a keyboard is all you need. CS developed an application that will soon let cybernauts directly keyboard their own texts at a France Télécom site. It will also expedite the message (telephoned and hand-delivered telegrams). There is even a menu that includes examples of ready-written texts to help defeat writer’s cramp. Further advantages are in the offing, notably an economic alternative to the telephone, and promotional subscription rates. This new service is particularly attractive for consumers and small companies. CS C OMMUNICATION & S YSTÈMES 2000 24 ( New generations of service Modernisation process of its information resources, DGAC rebuilt in record time its entire information system and the local network for its new Paris headquarters. DGAC : an evolving communication system for secured skies in the future Critical applications, e-Solutions, Network services, Facilities management, Critical applications, e-Solutions, Network services, DGAC (Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile, or general directorate for civil aviation) is one of the large technical administrations at the Ministry of Equipment, Transport and Housing. As part of its major project for setting up offices in Paris, the DP department of DGAC decided to rebuild all layers of its information system. These important task, which reflect the French government's plans to modernize the information systems of its public services, aim to deploy a new network architecture, secured and administered using ATM, in replacement of the existing system. CS has proposed an architecture that relies on an innovative ATM backbone network, composed of some 20 Nortel switches, with a distribution ratio of 10:100. The principal characteristics of this architecture are redundancy and very high fault tolerance. In conformance with job specifications, this architecture ensures that any fault cannot impact more than 100 workstations at a time. In brief, it must enable extremely high Quality of Service (QoS). Besides operational stability, the new LAN network also allows for deployment of new tools (messaging, X-Net applications, videoconferencing, etc.) over a short ramp-up period. More generally, it now permits DGAC to ensure its information system is future-proof. CS C OMMUNICATION & S YSTÈMES 2000 25 ( Network services POSITIONED AS A COMMUNICATION SERVICES PROVIDER As a network and communication systems integrator, CS speaks to large enterprises, which now tend to prefer leasing their applications (messaging, virtual private network, etc.) to procuring technical communication solutions. That is why CS positions itself in this segment as a Communication Services Provider (CSP). Inspired by the logic of an Application Services Provider (ASP), CS formalizes its new offering for outsourcing communication functions (partnering with Netcentrex) around advanced IP telephony, which allows enterprises to develop value-added services, such as single phone numbers, intelligent videoconferencing and unified messaging. TEOR, in Rouen Modern transportation requires advanced information resources – July 12, 1999, the Rouenais metropolitan district launched works for TEOR (Transport Est-Ouest Rouennais, or Rouenais east-west transportation lines). This futuristic transportation system offers passengers comfort, regularity and speed over 26 kilometers of public transportation. To inform customers about traffic conditions, CS deployed a traveler information system (SIV, in French) across the TEOR network. This infrastructure implements a 155 Mbit/s switched ATM network. Besides traffic data, shown on displays in stations (waiting time between two vehicles, etc.), the network will carry information relative to ticketing and e-cash.
