Letter from the President
As I begin my twelfth year at Molloy, I can say without hesitation that 2010-2011 was the most important year in my tenure and arguably one of the most significant in the College’s history. The opening of two new buildings reflects the culmination of all the Molloy community has accomplished over the years and is symbolic of our continued commitment to growing
and improving Molloy, both for our students and for the communities we serve.
Our first residence hall can house more than 150 students and will add a new vitality to campus life. The students have
embraced residence life, and it is tremendously rewarding to see the excitement on their faces.
The Public Square student center will serve as the hub of our new campus. The Public Square includes classrooms, study
spaces, the information commons and dining facilities, to name but a few features. The Madison Theatre at the Public Square
is a state-of-the-art performance center that will attract talented artists from around the world while also providing new space
for a wide variety of College events.
Our enrollment climbed again last year, and that trend continued as we began the 2011-2012 school year. We launched
a number of new academic programs during the year, and opened new offices and treatment centers for the Rebecca Center
for Music Therapy and the Speech-Language Pathology Department. Molloy also hosted a number of high-profile speakers
and conferences, continuing to enhance our reputation as an institution that is also committed to serving the community.
Finally, our student-athletes continued to be strong competitors in a wide variety of sports, while maintaining the appropriate
balance between academics, sports and a variety of other activities.
Just prior to going to press, we learned that Molloy has been named (for the third consecutive year) one of the best regional universities by U.S. News and World Report and a “Best in the Northeast” college by The Princeton Review. We also made
a significant leap in the U.S. News and World Report rankings, moving from 67th to 52nd. The recognition confirms what the
Molloy community has always known, and is now becoming increasingly apparent to the broader audience.
I know we are all looking forward to a new year filled with new facilities, new programs and a wealth of new accomplishments. That said, we should not forget that what makes Molloy special are our values, our traditions, and our ongoing commitment to the power of education to transform lives.

Introduction
A
s we look back on the
many accomplishments of
the 2010-2011 academic
year, one fact cannot be ignored -Molloy is changing. We are moving
toward a future that will combine
our new physical surroundings with
our ongoing quest for academic
excellence and our deeply rooted
Dominican heritage. With the help
of the Molloy community, we have
reached the summit of just one of
many mountains we as an institution
will climb. We would be remiss if we
did not take a moment, or two, to
enjoy the view.

The New Face
of Molloy
The College landscape has been forever changed by the
welcome addition of two new buildings on campus – the
Public Square student center, which houses the Madison
Theatre, and Molloy’s first residence hall. These new
buildings bring new dimensions to the campus while also
providing additional ways for the community to become
involved.
The Public Square building is a Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design (LEED) certified structure. The
building is not only home to our new theatre, it also houses
classrooms, offices, our art gallery, the information commons/computer lab, study/meeting areas and additional
dining facilities. This building serves students, faculty and
employees as well as the community-at-large by providing
various spaces for meetings, dialogue, and entertainment.
Our new three-floor, co-educational residence hall can
house over 150 students. Students from all class years and
majors now reside on campus. The building is equipped
with double, single and suite-style rooms, bathrooms, laundry room, three study/recreational lounges, a main lobby
area and a 24/7 security desk by the front door. Resident
Advisors are employed in each wing to provide programming, enhance community, enforce policies and help
residents find services they need.
The Madison Theatre is a 550-seat venue which resides

in our new Public Square. The theatre is a state-of-the-art performance space
with incredible acoustics. We anticipate offering lectures and discussions as well
as hosting an entire theatre season filled with inspiring artistic performances from
the world of dance, music and theatre. Our students will also have ample opportunity to use the space for performances of their own. Through both live perfor-
mance and via modern media delivery, hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders
will benefit from the educational and cultural offerings of this exciting facility.
The new facilities set the stage for the “new Molloy" providing space that
enhances community and allows us to complete our transformational mission.

Strong Academic Programs
2010 was the International year of the Nurse, and it was only fitting that in September of 2010 we welcomed our very first doctoral candidates. Ten students began
work toward their Ph.D.s, which will be the first doctorates awarded by the College.
Our program, which was the culmination of over five years of preparation, will prepare nurses for leadership roles in academia, health policy formulation, healthcare

administration and clinical practice. The curriculum is focused on theory, research,
the humanities, and methodology.
Also in the fall we introduced two new treatment facilities. In October, Molloy’s
Speech-Language Pathology Department opened a new facility located at 30 Hempstead Avenue in Rockville Centre. The speech center is a comprehensive facility providing diagnostic and therapeutic intervention for children and adults from infancy
through geriatrics. Then in November the Rebecca Center for Music Therapy held an
opening event for its new offices and treatment rooms located on the lower level of
Dr. Barbara Schmidt and a young client in the
new Speech Pathology/Audiology Clinic

diagnosed with developmental
delays, autism, learning disabilities,
neurological impairments, speech
and language delays, physical disabilities, and emotional difficulties.
We had a number of new degree
options approved during the course
of the 2010-2011 year. The College
now offers a Master’s in SpeechLanguage Pathology, and the first
students entered the program this
fall. Two new minors have also been
added -- a minor in Sustainability
Studies and a New Media minor. We
continually seek to offer our students new and exciting choices that
will give them a competitive edge
upon graduation.
The National Council for the
Accreditation of Teacher Education
(NCATE) Unit Accreditation Board
voted to continue the Division of
Education’s accreditation at the
initial and advanced teacher preparation levels until fall 2017. We met
or exceeded all NCATE standards
and remain committed to producing
quality teachers.

A Cornerstone of
the Community
Molloy continued to demonstrate its position as
a center for social discourse and discussion during
the 2010-2011 academic year. We hosted a number
of diverse events that provided opportunities for the
surrounding community to become involved with the
College. These were opportunities to hear well-known
speakers and to learn about new concepts.
The inaugural St. Thomas Aquinas Lecture featured
Father James Martin, the author of My Life with the
Saints and, most recently, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost)
Everything. Father Martin is also the culture editor of the
Jesuit magazine America. A standing room only crowd
greeted the very popular Jesuit priest as he delivered
his lecture entitled, Laughing with the Saints: Joy, Humor,
and Laughter in the Spiritual Life.
Our public programming on campus continued with
Dr. Colin Beavan, a.k.a. "No Impact Man." Dr. Beavan
came to campus to help commemorate Earth Week at
Molloy. He discussed the details of the year-long project
in which he and his family went “off-the-grid” and attempted to live in the middle of New York City with as
little environmental impact as possible.
New York Times best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell
was the featured speaker at the 2011 Joe and Peggy
Maher Leadership Forum. He addressed a capacity

crowd as he spoke of the “Perils of Overconfidence.” Mr. Gladwell used examples
from Civil War history to illustrate how the hubris of business executives ultimately
led to the recent financial crisis in America. He stated that a heavy dose of ethics
taught by business professors combined with faith-based education (at colleges
like Molloy) may help to curtail a similar happening in the future. A panel discussion
on the same topic followed the keynote address and featured members of our
extended Molloy community.
Molloy’s Music Education Department hosted a three-day symposium on Sacred
Harp music. Music educators from around Long Island and presenters from around
the country, took part in the unique event. The Sacred Harp tradition was imported
from Europe in the 1790s and represents a continuation of America’s oldest form
of choral music education. The symposium was a wonderful opportunity to share
insight into this unique style of music with the entire Molloy community.
Our Business Division once again held its innovative summer "boot camp,"
attracting the best and brightest high school students from across Long Island
who are considering careers in business. The students gave up a week of summer
vacation to spend it on the Molloy campus, attending lectures, workshops and
simulation sessions designed to give them a better taste of college life, as well as,
an idea about what a career in business could do for them.

Academics
Molloy students continue to not only
demonstrate their abilities in the classroom, but also in the sports arena as well.
The 2010-2011 year had many highlights,
both at the team level and for individual
student athletes, many of whom were
named to the All East Coast First and
Second Teams.
Memorable team moments included:

Our continued commitment to community service was demonstrated by many
meaningful events on and off campus.
For example, our annual BoxTown event,
which benefits Bethany House and supports homeless women in our area, took

service-learning opportunities where they
can earn credit while
making a difference in
many diverse communities. Our freshmen
also continued their
tradition of collecting
supplies throughout
the Village of Rockville Centre to benefit
those in need. Our

cancer, and the team
continues to assist her
and her family in many
