President's Message
M
y message in the Annual Report traditionally focuses on our
accomplishments during the prior academic year. As you
will see on the following pages, 2011-2012 was certainly a
great year for Molloy, one that should make us all proud. Recent events,
however, moved me to address a different issue.
When massive storm Sandy struck Long Island on October 29,
everyone was impacted. In particular, many members of the Molloy
family suffered tremendous losses.
Molloy was built upon a foundation of community that emphasizes
helping those in need. In the days and weeks following Sandy, that
core value was clearly evident. The Molloy community rallied to help
students, staff, administration, and faculty whose lives have been severely
impacted by the storm, and we reached beyond the College walls to support others as well.
We have collected food, clothing and supplies for those in need,
and Molloy community members have offered their homes to those
who have been displaced. Special counseling services have been made
available, and teams of students have visited devastated communities to
provide labor and other support to homeowners, to name just a few of
our outreach efforts.
I cannot adequately express how proud I am to be a member of the
Molloy family, and I am confident that you feel the same. Our values
are real, not just words on a paper, and we live them every day.

E
ach year we greet our incoming freshman class with
great anticipation and a deep sense of pride. We know
that these students, the newest members of the Molloy
community, have come here by choice because something we do
here inspires them. We also know that when they graduate, these
students will make a difference in their chosen fields and in the
communities where they live.
At the start of the 2011-2012 academic year we welcomed 403
first-time freshmen (an increase of more than 30 percent since
2001) and 520 transfer students to our campus. It is truly exciting to see the size of our student population increasing, but that is
only part of the story.
Our admissions process has become much more selective and
the application process more competitive. The average freshman
SAT score, for example, has increased more than 61 points since
2006. In Fall of 2011 honors students made up 16 percent of the
total freshman class. Just seven years prior, in Fall 2004, honors
students made up just four percent of the freshman class.
The College’s graduation rate for first-time freshmen is 63
percent, which is well above our competition’s rate of 54 percent.
This reflects not only the academic strength of Molloy’s students,
but also the programs and resources we have in place to support
them during their college careers.
Our student-athletes continue to make us proud, both on the
playing field and in the classroom. Our student-athletes have the
highest graduation rate in the East Coast Conference (ECC) and
52 percent of the student-athletes attained a 3.2 GPA or higher.

M
olloy continues to expand and build upon existing
academic offerings. In the Fall of 2011 we began
our new Speech-Language Pathology master’s
program, exciting news for our already-thriving program. The students’ experience in this program continues to be enhanced at The
Molloy College Speech-Language and Hearing Center where they
spend time working with actual clients under the close supervision
of their professors.
We expanded our international education offerings to include more diverse destinations. Semester abroad opportunities
in London, Italy and Belgium were available as well as a summer
study program in Spain. Student options for international travel
included Jamaica, Ireland, China, and France. Participants in
these programs tell us that travel has altered their world view and
increased their feelings of self-confidence.
The Humanities Division, in conjunction with the Molloy
College Irish Studies Institute and the James Joyce Society, hosted
Molloy’s first Bloomsday celebration: A Tribute to James Joyce
and Ulysess. The celebration, partially funded by the New York
Council for the Humanities, took place on June 16, which is the
date of the action in the novel. Bloomsday is celebrated throughout

new Ph.D. program and showcases the research and
scholarship of Molloy faculty and students.

Building Excellence
T
he Fall 2011 semester brought some very significant physical changes to campus. As a result
of the most successful capital campaign in the College’s history, the campus now boasts a
residence hall, a new student center and a state-of-the-art, 550-seat theatre. These changes
were designed to offer students an enhanced college experience by providing expanded resources and
increased opportunities to interact.
Fitzgerald Hall, Molloy’s first residence hall, opened in the fall and the option
to reside on campus offered students a new dimension to their college
experience. The facility was named for Molloy’s fourth
president, S. Janet Fitzgerald, O.P., Ph.D.,
during a dedication ceremony held in
May 2012.

Over 150 students reside in the residence hall, developing friendships and participating in
Molloy’s rich campus life. The opportunity to live on campus was also offered to international
students and the 2011-2012 academic year saw students from Norway and England call Molloy
home.
Our new student center, the Public Square, not only offers students additional gathering
places, but added academic resources as well. There are multiple study/meeting areas, an art
gallery, a coffee bar, a game room, and the information commons (with computers available for
student use and a librarian on staff to assist with research). The building also houses services
dedicated to the student experience including: the office of student affairs, campus ministries,
international education, student media, student government and various student clubs. The open

design of the Public Square encourages conversations of significance to take place
among members of the Molloy community.
The Madison Theatre at Molloy College, located in the Public Square, opened in
November of 2011 with an all-star gala event. The 2011-2012 theatre season brought
many well-known performers to the new venue, including Martin Short, Bernie Williams, Rachel Dratch, Mario Cantone and Scott Adsit.
The theatre hosted a wide variety of community and educational programs as
well. The South Shore Symphony and the Children's Orchestra Society utilized the
facility for practices and performances. We sponsored a summer theatre/music intensive program for aspiring performers, and The Race to Nowhere documentary was the
subject of a passionate panel discussion sponsored by the Division of Education, just
to name but a few of the diverse events we hosted.

ur Rebecca Center for Music Therapy is being funded
to participate in an international research study as the
United States clinical/research site. Sponsored by The
Grieg Academy for Music Therapy Research Centre, Uni Health,
Uni Research, the study will investigate the effectiveness of music
therapy for children with autism spectrum disorders. The international collaboration includes eight countries worldwide: Australia, Austria,
Brazil, Denmark, Israel, Korea, Norway and the United States.
The Sustainability Institute at Molloy College received a grant
from the National Grid Foundation to implement a Teaching Green
Institute under the auspices of our Division of Continuing Education
and Professional Development. The summer institute is attended by
secondary school science teachers dedicated to the teaching of sustainable practices, and generates a wonderful opportunity to impact
the lives of thousands of Long Island students as well as the environmental future of Long Island.
Molloy was named a "Catholic College of Distinction" by guidance counselors. This honor is based on four evaluation criteria:

outcomes. Once again The Princeton Review and U.S. News and World
Report chose Molloy as one of the best colleges in the northeast.
