Words From Home
by Dr. Perry Hancock, President & CEO
Spring is finally here! If you live in Louisiana or almost anywhere in the
South, you know why we are so excited.
At LBCH we are excited about spring because it means that the children
can ride their bikes, play ball, and just enjoy being outside. One of my greatest
blessings is watching the children being children. Their laughter is a gift to us
all.
Spring at the Children’s Home is also exciting for a much more important
reason. It gives us the opportunity to celebrate the resurrection of our Savior.
Before coming to the Home, most of our children have never known the true meaning of Easter. Once they hear the story
of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection, many of them come to know Christ as Savior. That is the real reason that spring
is such an exciting time at LBCH. Of all that we can thank you for, we thank you most for helping us share Christ with
our children.
As you read this edition of the Home News, you will see many of the exciting ways that God is meeting needs and
changing lives. Our off-campus foster care ministry is growing around the state. God’s unborn children are being saved
from abortion through our Sellers Mobile Pregnancy Care Center. Our Granberry Counseling Centers are providing healing and hope for 100s each month. And every day we are providing a place that our children can call “Home”.
I do pray that you enjoy a blessed Easter this year. As you celebrate with your family or your church family, remember that you are also an important part of our family here at LBCH. Thank you again for helping us provide love, care and
hope in Christ at your Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home.
God bless.

By Debbie Robertson, HomeNews Writer
“Fun! It’s a huge blessing!” That’s how Pheonix describes
the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home. “I like having so many
kids to be around and there are so many people here to entertain us.”
Pheonix and her brother and sister, Kenyon and MaKenzi
(who were highlighted in past issues of The HomeNews), have
been part of the LBCH campus for a year. Pheonix relocated to
Love Cottage in January and says it’s nice to be part of the allgirl family. Pheonix is also enjoying being a little more independent. While she, Kenyon and MaKenzi started out in Hope
Cottage together, Pheonix says that she and MaKenzi frequently disagree, so this break has been of great benefit to both of them.
A freshman at Neville, Pheonix shares that
math is her favorite and one of her best subjects, which is “unbelievable!” In the past,
this was an area in which she struggled.
Summer school and an instructor who
presented the equations and formulas in a
more understandable way made all the
difference. Shawn Bradshaw, Love
Cottage Mom, says that Pheonix has really worked hard in all of her classes.
Pheonix is still a little surprised, but also
excited, at what she’s accomplished.
Participation in ROTC has given
Pheonix the opportunity to learn more about
responsibility, respect, discipline and even fitness. Pheonix has several uncles who have served
in the military, and she and Kenyon both admire that
and are drawn to military service due, in part, to that influence.
Pheonix loves the guest speakers from different branches of the
service, boot camp, and occasions where uniforms are required,
creases are checked, and shoe shines are a must. She likes the
point system which rewards compliance with the policies and
that also leads to promotions and ribbons that are evidence of
a job well done.
Pheonix is concerned for those her age who have no discipline in either behavior or appearance. She is trying to make a
difference in the lives of her peers through her participation in
Teen Court. She volunteers regularly and has helped counsel
students on what to expect and how they should behave during
the court proceedings. She talks to them about attitude, showing respect, speaking only when spoken to, and saying
“ma’am” and “sir.” She thinks being a defense attorney would
be a rewarding career, but she wouldn’t mind serving in other
Pheonix...
areas of Teen Court just to see what is involved in the other
positions. Pheonix has a big smile as she shares that she really
loves photography and has considered that as a career choice—
but, no matter what else she might do, criminal justice is going
to play a big role in her future. Her mom recently completed
her GED and is currently taking an online course in criminal
justice. Pheonix is proud of her and loves that they have this
interest in common.
All of the Love Cottage girls have assigned chores, and
Pheonix requested sweeping and mopping the dining room and
living room. According to Mrs. Bradshaw, Pheonix is always
helpful around the cottage and jumps right in to ensure things
get done. Even with the busyness of school and campus
activities, Mrs. Bradshaw has noticed that Pheonix
routinely makes an effort to spend time with the
younger girls. Pheonix likes shopping and
watching The Voice. Scrapbooking is okay,
but not her favorite activity, and she’s also
tried ceramics. Shawn, husband Scott, and
the girls attend North Monroe Baptist.
Pheonix participated in this year’s
DiscipleNow weekend. Since she was
brand new to the youth group, it was a little scary, but she says that spending the
weekend with the other students was a
great way to start getting acquainted. The
family enjoys hanging out together, which
can be fun and also crazy sometimes according to Pheonix. A country and Christian music
fan, Pheonix enjoyed the recent Roadshow in
Bossier with her family. They were able to see a
number of their favorite Christian music artists, and the
travel time to and from the concert was an adventure. The family is looking forward to the Christian movies that are coming
out this spring and local activities such as the Catfish Festival,
one of Pheonix’s favorite events last year.
Pheonix is thankful to LBCH for all they’ve done to help
her family over the past year. She likes her campus family and
says that Mr. Frost, Director of Cottage Life, is especially fun
to tease. Pheonix is very appreciative of her braces and the corrective surgery she’s having on her jaw this summer, both made
possible through LBCH. She’s just hoping for a short recovery
time so that she doesn’t miss any of the camps or other summer
activities! Pheonix says that the campus staff and her cottage
parents have been a great support system. “If families are struggling and if they need someone to believe in them and they
need a godly influence, they need to come here.”
Looking forward to a career in criminal justice

Sharing Easter with Children
At your Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, we get to share
Easter with children! Easter is a Christian holiday of enormous
significance. The sacrificial death of Christ and His triumphant
resurrection are reasons for great joy and celebration to those of
all ages who know Him as Savior and Lord, and these are foundational truths to our Christian faith.
The story of the cross and the empty tomb reveals Easter truths that Christian parents and grandparents
will want their children and grandchildren to know and understand. I encourage you to teach your children
(or grandchildren) the precious truths of the Easter story at your home to help reinforce what they hear at
church.
There are many books and children’s story Bibles available as valuable teaching resources. But whether
or not these supplemental helps are used, the importance of using the Bible itself to teach biblical truths cannot be overestimated. The Holy Spirit gives even young children an understanding of stories that are read
directly from God’s Word. Children come to love and to value God’s Word as they are lovingly and patiently introduced to its truth.
The beautiful, but intricate story of Easter can be presented to children with simplicity if divided up into
small parts. Younger children will not completely understand the agony of the Crucifixion, the wonder of
redemption, or the miracle of the Resurrection. But they will be affected by the awe and reverence and joy
you express as you read the biblical account and celebrate Easter hope together.
The following Scripture passages and truths are offered as a suggested outline to help you share Easter
with your children (or grandchildren). Please adapt it to fit your children’s needs and attention span. Teaching
your children about Easter is both a high priority and a wonderful privilege!
I.
Read Mark 14:32-50 (The Arrest in the Garden)
Truths to Share with Your Children:
1. Jesus knew what was going to happen, but He did not run away or hide.
2. Jesus wanted to do what God, His Father, wanted Him to do.
II. Read Mark 14:53 – 15:15 (The Trial)
Truths to Share with Your Children:
1. Jesus had done nothing wrong.
2. God was in complete control. It was God’s plan for Jesus to die.
III. Read Mark 15:16-32 (The Crucifixion)
Truths to Share with Your Children:
1. Jesus could have come down off the cross, but He did not. He knew God wanted Him to be there,
and He obeyed God.
2. Jesus suffered for our sins. The soldiers hurt Jesus.
IV. Read Mark 15:33-47 (Jesus’ Death and Burial)
Truths to Share with Your Children:
1. Jesus died on the cross. He died because He loves us and wants us to go to heaven.
2. Only people who love and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ will go to heaven.
3. Jesus’ friends took His dead body and laid it in a tomb.
V. Read Matthew 28:1-10 (The Resurrection)
Truths to Share with Your Children:
1. God made Jesus come alive again.
2. Because Jesus came alive, all people who believe in Him will live forever with Him.
3. Many people saw Jesus and talked to Him after His resurrection.
Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to share Easter with the children God brings into our
care. Thank you for making this life-changing ministry possible!
Every three years the Children’s Home is excited to host a
reunion for former residents and staff. Alumni from across the
country make their way “Home” to reminisce and reconnect
with former LBCH family members.
The 2014 Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home Reunion
will be held on June 6 and 7 on the campus in Monroe.
If you are a former resident or staff member, we hope you will

Easter Reveals
the Heart of God:
He Cares!
Dear Friend of Children,
At the Children's Home we care. We provide care like food, clothing, shelter, and more. But behind the care we provide, is the care we have for the children
in our hearts. We care about the children because God cares for us.
We are currently caring for nine-year-old *Janice and her two younger brothers. With an absentee father and mother and a grandmother unable to provide
adequate care, Janice and her siblings came to the Children's Home with little more than the clothes they were wearing.
These precious children are flourishing in our care! Janice received our "Excellence in Academics Award" for this past school year and is doing well in the
third grade. Her younger brothers are happy, growing little boys who love life and their cottage parents.
Easter reveals God's caring heart for all of us. Thank you for aligning your heart with the heart of God to help us accomplish His purpose in caring for children in such need.
Please know that your Easter gift will help us continue to demonstrate Christ's compassion and concern for Janice and her brothers and all the children God
brings into our care.
Thank you for making this life-changing ministry possible. Thank you for caring so much!
For God's Children,
"Casting all your care upon Him,
because He cares about you." 1 Peter 5:7

YMCA Hosts Fun Day of
Healthy Activities at LBCH!
The YMCA of Northeast Louisiana has been hosting fun activities on the Children’s
Home campus to keep our boys and girls moving! The YMCA Healthy Living Program is
about activity, nutrition, and responsible social interaction. The “Y” is putting its best foot
forward in an effort to help children and teens in our area to live healthy, happy lifestyles.
Through a variety of activities, children learn how to be healthy for life while having fun
together.
Movement and laughter help not only physical
conditioning, but they improve mental outlook and
emotional stability. This program with its energetic
leaders creates an environment where good choices
for life are easy to understand and easy to make.
Our children and staff enjoy these times together
and we hope they create lasting patterns for good
choices for life.
If you want to learn more about adoption from foster care,
plan to attend our FREE event on Saturday, May 10th in
Baton Rouge, LA at Istrouma Baptist Church. You'll hear
speakers share their experiences and have a chance to connect
with local adoption agencies and ministries. If you don't live
near Baton Rouge, pass this along to someone who does and
join us in praying for the event.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Monsanto Fund has provided eligible farmers across
America the opportunity to direct a $2,500 donation to a nonprofit organization in the communities where they live and work. Stanley Johnson, a local Ouachita farmer, selected
Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home to receive a $2,500 donation through America’s Farmers
Grow Communities program.
Stanley was born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana, and has been farming since 1979.
Along with his sons Christopher, Matthew, and Chad, Stanley farms several tracts of land in
Ouachita Parish growing cotton, wheat, soybean, corn, and milo. Stanley’s father, R. Z.
Johnson, farmed in this area for 60 years.
Randy Giesbrecht, the Monsanto territory sales manager, was delighted to be part of the
check presentation to the Children’s Home.
Upon receiving the donation, Dr. Perry Hancock, Children’s Home President & CEO,
stated, “We are so grateful for the gift of $2,500 from the Monsanto Fund. We are especially
grateful to Mr. Stanley Johnson for selecting the Home to receive this generous gift. The
Children’s Home has been a part of the Ouachita Parish community since 1925. It’s always
great to see a gift like this provided by someone within our community. We will use the
Monsanto gift to provide love, care, and hope in Christ to children and families in need within our community and across our state. Thank you Mr. Johnson and Monsanto Fund!”

Family, friends and LBCH
staff gathered to celebrate the
retirement of cottage parents,
Robert and Gwen Royal.
The Royals’ ministry at
LBCH began 15 years ago when
they moved into Love Cottage to
serve as parents to nine girls.
The Royals have touched the
lives of many boys and girls during their tenure at LBCH. The
couple served in Love Cottage
during the majority of their time
at LBCH. For the past few years,
they have served in several cottages as relief cottage parents.
Several guests shared memories about the Royals’ time at the Children’s Home including, sitting next
to them at First Baptist West Monroe on Sundays, enjoying 3 o’clock coffee with the cottage moms, and most importantly, the Christian example
they set for the children in their care.
Sharon Hyatt, a social worker at LBCH, shared how the children
loved Mrs. Gwen’s breakfasts and great hugs! Dr. Perry Hancock
expressed gratitude on behalf of the entire LBCH family to the Royals for
their dedicated service.
The Royals will be moving to Missouri in the coming weeks to be
near family. Please pray for them as they begin this new journey!
Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home & Crossroads NOLA
Foster Care/Adoption Partnership
Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home has partnered with Crossroads NOLA, a non-profit, faithbased organization associated with First Baptist New Orleans, to expand foster care services in the
Greater New Orleans area. Through this special partnership, LBCH now has a social worker in the
New Orleans area. Dru Crenshaw, LMSW, joined the LBCH team in March 2014 as a
Foster/Adoption Specialist. Dru will be completing the home studies and supporting foster/adoptive
families recruited by Crossroads NOLA.
Anna Palmer, Executive Director of Crossroads NOLA, explained the Crossroads initiative as
follows, “The Church has a clear biblical mandate to care for the most vulnerable among us. For
Christians, serving as a foster parent is an act of obedience that is incredibly rewarding. However,
it is often a challenging experience. Crossroads NOLA walks alongside potential foster families –
from initial certification through final placement. We understand that by investing in stable, loving
families, we are actually investing in the lives of vulnerable children.”
Christian families choosing to pursue foster/adoptive certification through the
Dru Crenshaw, LMSW
LBCH/Crossroads Partnership have several advantages: caseloads are maintained at a level that
ensures potential foster families are certified in a timely manner and the Foster/Adoption Specialist
maintains a relationship with each foster family – providing support and resources as children are placed in the home. In addition, Crossroads
NOLA’s foster families have access to a variety of resources including quarterly training on trauma and attachment in partnership with Tulane
Infant Team. This training helps foster parents better prepare and respond to parenting challenges unique to foster care. Crossroads NOLA also
has a resource center for foster families stocked with clothes, toys, diapers, and other essential items. The resource center serves as a “onestop-shop” for foster families who receive a child into their home with little notice. The Foster/Adoption Specialist maintains a library of
resources including books, articles, and DVDs that can be utilized by foster families to assist them in providing better care of the children
placed in their homes.
Another service provided by Crossroads NOLA is volunteer and church support. Crossroads NOLA works with local churches to train
volunteers to support foster families and to better understand the special needs of children in foster care. Crossroads NOLA also maintains a
citywide network of support offering support groups, respite events, and tutors for children in foster care.
If you live in the New Orleans area and are interested in foster/adoptive parenting or ministry, please contact Dru Crenshaw at

Mobile Pregnancy Care Center
Serves Women in Forest Hill
The Mobile Pregnancy Care Center partnered with Forest Hill Baptist Church to provide free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and counseling for women in the surrounding area.
In recognition of Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, Forest Hill church members placed
3,500 12-inch by 9-inch white wooden crosses next to the four lanes of U.S. Hwy 165 in
Forest Hill. The crosses represent the 3,500 babies aborted daily in the U.S.
If you would like information on having the Mobile Pregnancy Care Unit in your community, please call Cindy at1-800-859-0046.
Highlights from
By Susan C. Clark, Director
Someone once told me that the older you get, the faster time flies. I never understood that saying until now…
since I fall in the category of “Older”. Where did the first three months of the year go? Time flies if you are having fun! The mothers at HomePlace have kept quite busy receiving valuable knowledge that should help them make
wise choices in their future...and in return, reap a harvest of good decisions in their children’s lives as well.
Since January, we have had the privilege of sitting under the teaching of Dr. Dianne Phillips who volunteered
three months of her time, wisdom and expertise to the ladies of HomePlace and Christian Women’s Job Corp. In
addition, there were many women in the community who attended the sessions. We had a total of forty women who
participated in eight sessions on Relationship Attachment Model, also known as RAM. These seminars included
lectures, power point presentations, break-out sessions and group interaction. The information instructed our
women in making relationship decisions based on God’s Word and life application. I am always amazed how God
sends His messengers to our campus to deposit such value into the lives of our women. To God be the glory and
thank you Dianne Phillips!!!
In addition to RAM, our ladies have received the following training from leading women and men in the area
of their expertise: Kathy Leonard, Mary Lynn Bruyninckx, Keith Hammack, Kim Stuckey, Jonann Byargeon, Lori
Morris, Kathy Danna and Lindsey Lowe. Scheduled to speak in the months of April and May are Joann Deal, Pearl
Wise, Tammy Slawson, and myself. These guest speakers have taken time out of their jobs and busy schedules to
invest in the future of the women who are participating in HomePlace and CWJC. I give thanks to my Father in
Heaven for each one of you.
Spring is upon us and with it brings a season of new beginnings… a season where Earth seems to come to life
again. As we embrace the beauty of His creation, may we take the time to bow before our Lord and Savior, thanking Him for all the opportunities He gives us to grow and come to life again as well. May we celebrate and embrace
His resurrection power this season!!!!!
Thank You for
Helping Us
“Answer God's
Call to Care”!
Dr. Kathy Eichelberger, Director
Granberry Counseling Centers
Through my experience of counseling with the
children here at the Children’s Home, I have come to
realize they have something in common with all of
us: they just want to know that someone is always
going to be there for them.
Ultimately, there is only One who is capable of
keeping this promise: “I will never leave you or forsake you.” There is only One whose love never fails.
His name? Jehovah-Shammah, which means, “The
Lord is there!” (See Ezekiel 48:35).
One of the names of the Lord our God,
Which speaks of His love and His care,
Is called in the Hebrew – “Jehovah-Shammah”
And it means that “The Lord is there.”
In your hours of sorrow and your times of grief,
When your soul seems so filled with despair,
Reflect on the words of “Jehovah-Shammah”
And know in your heart – “He is there.”
When you’re flat on your back or you’re suffering pain,
And you’re feeling that life is not fair,
Start counting your blessings from “Jehovah-Shammah”
Just think on His love – “He is there.”
When your plans go awry or your dreams fall apart,
When your burdens are heavy to bear,
Lean hard on the promise of “Jehovah-Shammah”
You are never alone – “He is there.”
When the devil’s temptations press hard on your soul,
And he deviously seeks to ensnare,
Run quickly to Jesus, your “Jehovah-Shammah”
Then your battle is won – “He is there.”
Susan Clark and Dr. Dianne Phillips lead RAM
training for the ladies of Christian Women’s Job
Corps of Monroe and HomePlace.
When your heart overflows with thanksgiving and praise,
And you pour out your love in your prayer,
There’s rejoicing in heaven by “Jehovah-Shammah”
For He hears and we know –
“He is there.”

LBCH Celebrates
Feazel Cottage Renovations
A heartfelt “Thank You” goes out to Mr. Bobby G. McCullin for the much-needed renovations made to Feazel
Cottage. LBCH staff gathered for a Ribbon Cutting/Open House celebration for the cottage, which is home to six
lively boys and cottage parents Steven and Faith Smith.
Louisiana College students majoring in Social
Work toured the Children’s Home campus to
learn more about the ministry and the impact
Christian social workers make on our residents.

FREE 2014 VBS NAMETAGS!
This summer, the Children’s Home would like
to be a part of your VBS.
We are offering the following at no cost to
help with your event:
• Free originally designed VBS Name Tags to LA Baptist
Churches while they last! (cords included)
• Children’s Home speakers are ready and waiting to visit your
VBS and tell the Children’s Home story.
(Call early! Speaking schedules are limited.)
• Free LBCH DVDs are available for use at your VBS.
• VBSers are invited to go on a field trip to our Children’s
Home campus in Monroe. Children will discover first-hand
how Louisiana Baptists help those in need.
Contact us at 318-343-2244 or [email protected] today!
