Acidosis & Alkalosis
…finding the right balance
by Lyndon Cleary BAn Vet Bio Sc Hons
What is acidosis?
An increase in the hydrogen ion concentration within blood plasma results in what is commonly
known as lactic acidosis. Lactic acid buildup can have serious ramifications on both the health and
racing performance of a horse.
Mechanisms of action;
Relative Electrolyte Losses
When a horse’s aerobic threshold (VO2 max) is exceeded during high
intensity exercise (ie; galloping), large electrolyte losses occur
(in particular sodium) and the anaerobic pathway of energy
metabolism must be utilised. Energy is derived from glycogen stores
to fuel muscle contractions (anaerobic glycolysis) which results in the
production of waste material in the form of lactic acid.A combination
of excessive electrolyte losses and increased blood acidity (decrease
in blood pH) contribute to muscle fatigue, soreness and stiffness
during intense exercise.

How can the incidence and severity of lactic acidosis be minimised?
Increasing the mitochondrial volume and the muscle capacity for aerobic
energy metabolism through the implementation of regular
aerobic/sub-maximal intensity workouts.
Increase blood volume and the oxidative capacity of haemoglobin
through adequate provision of iron, butafosfan (bioavailable phosphorus)
and Vitamin B12 which can be achieved by utilising Ranvet’s Foliphos®.
Light exercise during recovery increases oxidative lactate utilisation to
assist in reducing lactate accumulation and muscular acidity.
Use of sodium based body acid neutralisers such as Ranvet’s
Neutrolene® range combine with excess lactic acid to form a salt,
buffering intra-muscular acidity and minimising sodium depletion.
Provide fat based forms of energy such as Racing Oil® which are able
to be rapidly broken down and utilised during sub-maximal (aerobic)
exercise, reducing the reliance on stored muscle glycogen and the
subsequent production of lactic acid.

Conversely, what is alkalosis?
I N N O VAT I O N
EXC ELLEN C E
A decrease in the hydrogen ion concentration within blood plasma results in what is commonly
known as alkalosis. Similarly to acidosis, alkalosis can also have serious ramifications on the health
and racing performance of a horse.
Mechanisms of action;
Horses which are involved in prolonged, sub-maximal exercise (ie; trotting/pacing) will experience
large amounts of sweat loss and a subsequent increase in blood alkalinity (increase in blood pH).
Sweat loss during sub-maximal exercise is associated with a significant reduction in chloride,
potassium, calcium and magnesium ions. This results in an increase in plasma bicarbonate and
blood alkalinity (alkalosis). Alkalosis may cause altered neuromuscular transmission, cardiac
arrhythmias, gastro-intestinal disturbances, muscle cramps and diagrammatic flutters (‘thumps’).
Alkalosis may also impact on a horse’s VO2 max, therefore increasing the reliance on muscle
glycogen to fuel muscle contractions.Thumps is a result of excessive calcium losses via sweat and
inadequate mobilisation of bone calcium stores.
How can the incidence and severity of alkalosis be minimised?
Provide access to clean drinking water before/after exercise.
Daily administration of Potassium Plus® will increase potassium and
magnesium stores in addition to providing valuable anti-oxidants;
Vitamin E and Selenium, to prevent free radical muscle damage during
exercise.
Provide fat based forms of energy such as Racing Oil® to reduce the
reliance on muscle glycogen stores to fuel muscle contractions. By
reducing muscle glycolysis, less lactic acid is produced which may assist
in prolonging the onset of fatigue during exercise.
Use of a portable electrolyte replacer such Electro Paste® pre and
post hard work (NB; access to water is required to replenish body
fluids following administration).

ocket Man
sent an ominious warning
to his likely rivals
in the KrisFlyer
Sprint with a stunning five length win in the
S$500,000 Group One Lion City
Cup (1200m) at Kranji recently.
Despite being eased downed dramatically toward the end of the race,
Rocket Man still stopped the clock in
a blistering 1 minute 8.85 seconds.
Everyone expected Rocket Man,
coming off his historic win in the
Group One Golden Shaheen in
Dubai, to win his third straight Lion
City Cup - but it was the ease of the
win that again stunned racegoers.
Allowed to lead from the inside
barrier by now regular Singapore
rider Barend Vorster, Rocket Man
was able to run the race to his liking
- controlling the hot speed and kicking clear after straightening.
Second favourite Better Be The
One, coming off a narrow defeat at
the hands of JJ The Jet Plane in the
Al Quoz Sprint, tried to stick with
Rocket Man - but he was no match
for the Singapore sensation.
The final margin of five lengths
could have been more, Vorster easing
the son of Viscount down as he prepared to pose for the winning photos.
Winning trainer Patrick Shaw was
virtually lost for words when speaking shortly after the hollow victory.
“What else can I add?”
“He is just an absolute champion
and a real showman and he did it
ever so easily again today,” Shaw
added.
“It was a nice gallop and my
instruction to Barend before the race
was to just ride him like he was in a
trial.”
“We’ll see how he pulls up and it’s

then on to his main goal, the
KrisFlyer in three weeks time.”
Shaw didn’t think they would be
much improvement to come from
Rocket Man - adding if he went any
faster he would live up to his name
and literally “take off.”
Winning rider Barend Vorster said
being able to be associated with such
a champion horse was a great privilege.
“My job today was just to try and
pace him and let him do what he
does best in the end,” Vorster reported.
“When the other horse came up
around me, I was never worried. I
just eased him up a little but he was
never out of second gear.”
“In the home straight, he just left
them. Easy run. Easy win.”
“I would say he has come back
even better after Dubai. It’s however
difficult to say if he could get any
better but he is absolutely spot on for
the KrisFlyer.”
Rocket Man was selected and purchased as a yearling for $60,000
from the 2007 Magic Millions
National Yearling Sale.
He was offered for sale by Tyreel
Thoroughbred Stud and purchased
by Andy Williams’ World Wide
Bloodstock and is raced by South
African based businessman Fred
Crabbia.
The star five-year-old has won 14
of his 18 starts (he was second at
other four - beaten no more than a
long neck) and earned the equivalent
of A$4,388,576.
Rocket Man is one of two international Group One winners produced

Despite having ridden thousands of
winners during his long career, Ryan
had never ridden the winner of a race
with a purse as high as $150,000.
Trained at Warwick Farm by Marc
Conners, Pimpala Secret made it two
wins for the week following a victory at Bathurst.
“It was a confidence boost for
him,” Conners said. “We took him
(to Bathurst) to make him a racehorse because he’d been bludging a
bit on us.”
“It was a 1400 metre race and we
put the blinkers on and we drew barrier one like today and he won exactly the same way.”
“He gave him the confidence boost
- he’s turned it around and he’s got
the job done for us today.”
“Winning form is good form.”
Conners said he felt his charge
would perform well today, but knew
he was stepping up alot in grade.
“I was very happy with him - but it
was a very good race.”
Today’s win was the fifth in 10
starts and along with his two minor
placings he’s earned his lucky connections an ever increasing
$219,100.
He’s turning out a great money
spinner considering he cost the
Pimpala Park Thoroughbreds team
just $3,500 from the 2008 Magic

CITY OF SONG BOOSTS
NATIONAL SALE
ity of Song gave the upcoming
Magic Millions National
Yearling Sale a major boost
when she scored a stylish win in the
listed Blue Sapphire Stakes at
Caulfield.
Prepared at the track by John
C
Moloney, City of Song made up for a
pair of unlucky runs when she came
down the outside of the field to win
narrowly, but impressively.
The win was the first at stakes
level for Jason Benbow in his comeback from a stint on the sidelines
after a serious leg injury.
A daughter of Bel Esprit, City of
Song scored impressively on debut at
Sandown prior to unlucky defeats at
both Caulfield and Moonee Valley in
her subsequent efforts.
“Once she started to get out at the
600 metre mark and Jason (Benbow)
got her running, she looked to be on
song to go,” Moloney said.
“She’s a really good filly that’s
going to be better in the spring.”
Moloney said City of Song would
head to the paddock for a break for
the Spring Carnival in mind.
“There were some nice colts in this
field and back in fillies grade you’d
think she would be suited in some
nice races during the spring.”
“We’ll give her a break over the
winter and take her up north of the

The Group One
Thousand Guineas
could be one of the
main missions for
City of Song in her
next preparation.
When the line was reached it was
City of Song ($4.60-$6) who held a
short head margin over the Rock of
Gibraltar youngster The New Boy
($11-$13).
The early leader The Counterfeiter
($15-$21), a colt by Keep the Faith,
was another three quarters of a
length back in third place.
A half brother to City of Song by
former outstanding sprinter Magnus
is a member of the Eliza Park draft
for June’s Magic Millions National
Yearling Sale. He has been catalogued as lot number 1711..
Eliza Park has a 30 strong draft for
the National Sale including 12 for
the National Yearling Sale. Their
others include yearlings by sires
including
Redoute’s
Choice,
Bernardini, Fastnet Rock, Exceed
and Excel and Lonhro.
City of Song and the Magnus colt
headed to the Gold Coast are both
from the stakes winning Umatilla
mare Songs of Vienna.
A winner of the Straight Six
Handicap at Flemington and runner
up in both the Group Three Frances
Tressady Stakes and listed Matron
Stakes, Songs of Vienna won four
races prior to being retired to stud.
As well as City of Song she is the
dam of the multiple city winner
Music in the Park - another daughter
of Bel Esprit.
Songs of Vienna, an Adelaide
Yearling Sale purchase, is a full sister to fellow Magic Millions graduates
and

earner
Hadabeclorka - one of the best
sprinters in Western Australia.
Further back hers is the same family as stakes winners Red Chiffon,
Danebar, Malevola and Prince of
Vasac.
DONCASTER FIRST FIVE
FOR GRADUATES
he wet conditions at Randwick
today failed to dampen the dazzling dash of tough mare Sacred
Choice who headed a Magic
Millions first five in the $2m Group
1 Emirates Doncaster Mile (1600).
The Joe Pride prepared five yearold revelled in the very heavy conditions to burst clear of her sixteen
rivals to score a dominant two length
win with Tim Clark in the saddle.
Love Conquers All made it back to
back Group 1 seconds as runner up,
whilst Queensland galloper Bold
Glance made ground late to finish
third a further half length back.
Syreon claimed fourth position
alongside Ilovethiscity in fifth to
complete a Magic Millions first five.
“When she broke away there was
nothing that was going to catch her,”
said trainer Joe Pride.
“It was hard to make up ground
and Tim made a conscious decision
to be a little bit closer, I was worried
about cover but she settled well and
on these heavy tracks she just sprints
like a gazelle.”
Sacred Choice was an inexpensive
$40,000 yearling purchase at the
2007 Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale.
Selected out of Kerrie Tibbey’s
Goodwood Park draft, Sacred
Choice has now returned connections over $1.9m in prizemoney.
Sacred Choice’s resume as a potential topflight broodmare is growing
rapidly following today’s Doncaster
victory.
Her initial Group 1 win came in the
T
Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington
last Spring.
Sacred Choice is out the Sir
Tristram mare Sacred Habit, a three
quarter sister to Golden Slipper winner and champion sire Marauding.
A full brother to Sacred Choice
will be on offer at the 2011 Magic
Milllions National Yearling Sale
which commences on the 5th of June
at the Gold Coast.
Consigned by Chatsworth Park at

have many admirers following his

UNBEATEN STAR FOR MOODY
ute Emily continued the red hot
run for Caulfield trainer Peter
Moody when she scored a
powerful all the way win in the
Group Three SAJC Sires’ Produce
Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville.
Now unbeaten in three runs, Cute
Emily boosted her future broodmare
value when she easily beat Win for
Wilson and Cash Bound.
Sold by Magic Millions as both a
weanling and yearling, Cute Emily
was sent out one of the popular elects
after excellent wins at Stawell and
Caulfield.
A product of top New South Wales
thoroughbred nursery Reavill Farm,
Cute Emily was originally sold for
$19,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions
National Weanling Sale.
She returned to the same sale ring
just over 12 months later and this
time a member of the Edinburgh
Park draft she realised $100,000 to
the bid of leading Melbourne bloodstock agent Bill Mitchell at last
year’s National Yearling Sale.
A daughter of Choisir, Cute Emily
was sent straight to the front by
accomplished Adelaide senior rider
Shayne Cahill and she held that position throughout for a soft win.
At the post Cute Emily ($2.80$3.80) held a length and a quarter
margin over the Encosta de Lago
gelding Win for Wilson ($10-$11$8).
Dash for Cash colt Cash Bound
($3.50-$4.40) was another neck back
in third place for the Darren Weir stable.

ONCE WERE WILD HOT FOR
CUP
nce Were Wild, one of the star
mares catalogued for June’s
Magic Millions National
Broodmare Sale, will head to the
Sydney Cup after a brilliant all the
way win in the Group Two
Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) at
Randwick.
O
In a bold front running performance Once Were Wild led her rivals a
merry dance - holding a big lead
throughout and importantly for connections a comprehensive margin at
the post.
A winner of the Group One AJC
Oaks at the track about 12 months
ago, Once Were Wild sent her earnings soaring toward half a million
dollars when she cruised home to
beat Anudjawun and C’est La
Guerre.
“It’s so lovely,” winning trainer
Gai Waterhouse said after the race.
“It’s almost a year to the day that she
won a race - but that happened to be
a Group One race.”
“Since then this mare has kind of
been dormant - maybe it happens to
we girls I don’t know - but really and
truly she’s so special.”
“We rode her aggresively today.
She’s taken an age to strike form and
to really get fit. It was a joy to watch
her.”
Waterhouse said it was onwards
and upwards to the Group One
Sydney Cup.
“She’s heading to the Cup and I’m
off to the Cup as well,” she added.
Winning rider Nash Rawiller said
it was nice to see the Johannesburg
mare transfer her good track work to
the racecourse in a Group Two feature.
“It’s been a bit frustrating,”
Rawiller said. “I’d said to Singo (part
owner John Singleton) that she’d
been going well on the track - but we
hadn’t got her into a race where
things had suited her.”
“The other day the race might have
been there for the taking - but she
had the blinkers on and it just made
her over race a bit.”
“Today that was the key with the
blinkers off, back at home. I was

very confident a long way from

“That (the Sydney Cup) has been
the main aim the whole way. She
should be there, better again,”
Rawiller summed up.
Once Were Wild has been a great
moneyspinner for connections after
being purchased by English based
agent Amanda Skiffington for
$50,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions

WELL BRED FILLY

he Must Be Obeyed made the
best possible start to her racetrack career when she scored a
breathtaking debut win at Canterbury
recently.
A beautifully bred daughter of
Commands, She Must Be Obeyed
looked a stakes filly in the making as
she made light work of the threeyear-old contest over 1100 metres.
A member of the Anthony
Cummings stable the filly was purchased by renowned Sydney bloodstock agent Keiran Moore for
$190,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions
National Weanling Sale at the Gold
Coast.
The filly was sent out as favourite
on the strength of three impressive
trial performances - two wins and a
second - her most recent a trial win at
Randwick on March 4.
Internationally proven Group One
rider Glyn Schofield couldn’t help
but be impressed with the debut win.
“She’s a very smart filly,”
Schofield said moments after the
race.
“I didn’t really let her go fully.
When I did give her some rein I had
Hughy (Bowman, Hamish Boy) near
me, but then she skipped away and I
couldn’t hear anyone behind.”
“It was a very soft win. I don’t
know the winning margin - but it was
a very good performance.”
Like Group One winning mares
Purple and Russeting, She Must Be
Obeyed is a daughter of Danehill’s
Group winning son Commands.
She is the second runner for the
former quality racemare Yvonne - a
triple stakes winning daughter of
Last Tycoon.
As well as She Must Be Obeyed,
Yvonne is the dam of the winning
and stakes placed filly Miss O’Brien.
The 2011 Magic Millions National

SPURTASTIC
STARS
IN
ROCKY MILLIONS
purtastic gave his connections
plenty to cheer about this afternoon when he scored a runaway win in the $100,000 Magic
Millions Rockhampton 2YO Classic
(1200m).
In a dominant on speed performance, Spurtastic cruised home under
Jim Byrne to win by three lengths.
Spurtastic is trained at Peachester
Lodge
by
highly
regarded
Queensland
horseman
Col
Williamson.
“I’d say he’s the best horse I’ve
trained,” Williamson said. “I’ve got a
really good opinion of him and I
think he’s going to make into a really nice three-year-old.”
Williamson said he would wait and
see how Spurtastic pulled up before
deciding what his immediate future
held.
“Further down the track we’ll set
him for the $1 million Magic
Millions 3YO Trophy at the Gold
Coast,” he added.
The win was the second in three
starts for Spurtastic. Two runs back
he demoralised his rivals with a three
S
and a quarter length win at the
Sunshine Coast in March.
In between that win and his victory
this afternoon Spurtastic ran a handy
fifth behind the highly promising
Show a Prince at Doomben.
Carrying the familiar Shoot Out
colours of Linda and Graham Huddy,
Spurtastic was purchased for
$185,000 from last year’s Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
At the winning post in today’s feature event the well backed Spurtastic
($5.50-$4.60) held a three length
margin over the favourite Aquatorial
($1.80 fav).
Trump ($10-$11) was another half
length back in third place for Shane
Scriven and Robert Heathcote.
Spurtastic is a son of Danehill’s
Golden Slipper winning sire son
Flying Spur and from the former
quality racemare Brief Embrace.
A daughter of Irgun and a Magic
Millions graduate in her own right,
Brief Embrace won four races including two in her first season.
At two she won a Group Three
Blue Diamond Prelude and
Debutante Stakes at Caulfield and
was a second placegetter in the
Group One Blue Diamond Stakes.
She trained on to win a Cockram
Stakes at listed level at three.
Further back hers is the family of
Ringa Ringa Rosie, a stakes winner
and Group One placegetter, Ringa
Ringa Rosie - who is catalogued for
June’s Magic Millions National
Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast.
THREE NEW STAKES WINNERS IN NATIONAL SALE
uality entries for June’s Magic
Millions National Broodmare
Sale continue to roll in.
Three new stakes winners - headlined by AJC Oaks winner Once
Q
Were Wild - have joined the quality
packed catalogue over the weekend.
A daughter of Breeders’ Cup
Juvenile winner Johannesburg, Once
Were Wild shot to fame when she
down the country’s best staying fillies in last year’s AJC Australian
Oaks.
From just 17 starts she has won six
races and been stakes placed on two
other occasions and earned
$389,150.
She is one of two stakes performed
produced by the multiple Sydney
winning Unbridled’s Song mare
Wildesong.
Quality Melbourne based stakes
winner Dollops will also go under
the hammer at the famous breeding
stock sale.
An eight time winner from just 30
starts, Dollops earned valuable black
type when successful in the listed
Bow Mistress Stakes in Tasmania.
Also placed in a Group Three How
Now Stakes, listed Tokyo City Cup
and listed Ladies Day Vase, Dollops
has earned over $244,000.
A daughter of former champion
European
galloper
Generous,
Dollops is a half sister to the Hong
Kong based stakes winner Our Class.
Joining Once Were Wild and
Dollops in a cracking catalogue is
the stakes winning and Group One
performed filly Ringa Ringa Rosie.
A daughter of Bradbury’s Luck,
Ringa Ringa Rosie is being sold as a
racing and breeding prospect and
boasts three wins and three minor
placings from just 11 starts.
The three-year-old filly won the
listed Hampden Stakes and was second in the Group One TJ Smith

KIWI STARS
utstanding kiwi galloper Hold
it Harvey continued his red hot
run in feature races when he
thrashed a quality field in the Group
Two Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m).
Prepared by Terri Rae, Hold it
Harvey didn’t give his accomplished
rivals a look in, cruising to an easy
big race win - his third group success
in four runs.
The win was the ninth at stakes
level for Hold it Harvey - one of
New Zealand’s unheralded racetrack
stars.
In his latest big race success Hold
it Harvey sat in the first half of the
field, against the rail, before coming
with a run after turning for home. No
sooner he’d hit the front, he

leave his rivals languishing behind.
With regular rider Jamie Bullard in
the saddle, Hold it Harvey defeated
Dawn Ghost (Michael Walker) by
three and three quarter lengths, while
Can’t Keeper Down (Noel Harris)
was another half length back in third
place.
Among the unplaced brigade were
proven big race winners Red Ruler,
Vosne Romanee, Capecover and Sir
Slick.
“Harvey has been a super horse for
us,” a delighted Terri Rae said. “My
partner Matt Shepherd owns him and
he’s now won nine stakes races.”
“Although he is not a big horse he
has a great motor and huge heart. We
are certainly lucky to have him.”
Rae plans to give her star campaigner one more run in the Group
Three Canterbury Gold Cup later this
month before heading for a spell.
All up Hold it Harvey has notched
13 wins and 18 placings from 52
starts and earnings of over
NZ$554,000.
The gelding has been a remarkable
money spinner for connections after
his purchase for $16,000 at the 2006
Magic Millions National Yearling
Sale.
He was picked out and purchased
at the sale by trainer Terri Rae from
the draft of Baramul Stud.
“I purchased Harvey on type. He
was a nice, correct horse with a lovely way about him - a tidy individual
overall and great value,” Rae said.
“I have had terrific success with
my purchases from Gerry’s draft. I
have bought three horses off him (Hold it) Harvey, Not Now Norman
who had two starts for us for two
wins including a stakes race and was
sold to Hong Kong and also Go Go
Dingo (Testa Rossa) who is a threeyear-old winner of two races and
shows considerable promise.”
“My other Magic Millions purchases include Don’t Say Clang nine wins including a stakes win and
Six Blue Monkeys, a Pure Theatre
gelding who had his second start
today and was a winner.”

neck back in third place.
The Australian bred son of
Starcraft was sold through the draft
of Oakwood Farm at the 2008 Magic

New Zealand based buyer Peter
Walker went to $200,000 to secure

Starcheeka with Anthony Timpson.
Walker, a well known thoroughbred identity in New Zealand, has
owned or part owned star gallopers
including Tycoon Lil, Imananabaa,

Starcheeka, now the winner of four

OAKS NEXT FOR MIRJULISA
LASS
irjulisa Lass emerged as a
leading contender for the
AJC Oaks with a dominant
win in today’s Group One Vinery
Stud Stakes (2000m).
Sent out at big odds despite winning two of her past four Sydney
runs, Mirjulisa Lass came with a
strong and well timed run up the
inside of the field in the straight to
firstly hit the front and then race
clear.
Prepared by Greg Hickman,
Mirjulisa Lass was considered by
most punters as an outsider - but connections thought their charge had an
undeniable chance of success.
“Everything had gone along 110%
perfect for her and I just couldn’t
believe the price. It’s going to be a
good afternoon.”
“She’s going to be a real chances
for the Oaks,” Hickman noted.
“It was only the other day that they
(the owners) had their first city winner and then to have this (same)
horse come out and win a Group One
- it’s just unbelievable.”

what of a drought in racing’s elite
races.
“It’s been a long time since the last
one.”
Mirjulisa Lass ($21-$51) cruised to
the line two and a half lengths clear
of her nearest rival - the Diatribe filly
Fibrillation ($13-$21-$19).
Third home was the favourite and
reigning VRC Oaks winner Brazilian
Pulse ($2.40-$2.60-$2.35 fav) - who
was a further three parts of a length
behind the runner-up.
Corey Brown, who rode Mirjulisa
Lass to victory, has liked the way the
filly has progressed through the
grades and up in distance.
“I said to my manager I really want
to stay on his horse going to the
Oaks,” Brown said after the win.
“She won good two starts before
this, although it was a mediocre race
on the Kensington track.”
“She was a little bit unlucky last
start, but I still thought she would
handle an Oaks trip,” Brown added.
Mirjulisa Lass, a graduate of the
2009 Magic Millions National

Stradbroke Handicap winning son
Danasinga - sire of fellow Group

ANOTHER GROUP ONE
nabandana earned a spell after
confirming her status as New

stirring win in the Group One

A daughter of outstanding international sire Anabaa, Anabandana had
to pull out everything to confirm her
favouritism in nabbing the leader
Antonio Lombardo in the final
stride.
The win delighted seasoned trainer
Don Sellwood who described his
young star as a real “beauty.”
“She did the same at Auckland at
Christmas time and she just got
there,” Sellwood said. “She knows
where that line is - she really does.”
“What more can she do this year!
We’ve had a wonderful time with
her.”
“She’s marvellous. Absolutely
marvellous.”
Sellwood said the filly had to show
her star quality when Antonio
Lombardo kicked strongly in the
straight.
“I thought she was going to go up
and go past him - but you have to
give the other horse credit - he really
kicked on her, but she got the bob
in.”

“She’ll go home have a week at

she goes for a

Winning rider Opie Bosson said he
was happy during the running of the
race but on the line thought he was
beaten a nose.
“Everything went to plan (during
the race), I got her off the fence and
I thought I had the second horse well
and truly beat - but he kept fighting
back.”
“On the line I wasn’t sure whether
I’d got up. I actually thought I got
beat.”
“All credit to my filly she really
knuckled down and she got her nose
out on the line when it counted,”
Bosson summed up.
Anabandana was purchased by
leading New Zealand bloodstock
agent Marcus Corban for $26,000
from the Reavill Farm draft at the
2009 Magic Millions National
Weanling Sale.
Corban bought the filly on behalf
of Hamilton based client Christopher
Grace - a happy man whose $26,000
investment is looking a masterstroke.
She’s already earned NZ$350,000
and looks to have an extremely
bright future as a racehorse and
down the track as a broodmare
prospect.
She is by Anabaa - the sire of outstanding female gallopers including
Goldikova, Virage de Fortune,
Imananabaa, Court, French Bid and
this season’s Villiers Stakes winner
Dances on Waves.
She is the second winning produced by her dam - the well bred but
unraced Nureyev mare Great Notice.
As well as Anabandana, Great
Notice is the dam of four other winners including the Gimcrack Stakes
winner Gybe.
Great Notice is a full sister to the

A winner of over $1.5 million from

The filly by General Nediym was
one of the nation’s top juveniles last

“She had great speed and stamina
and was one of the top two-year-olds
of the country last season.”
“There won’t be many better

Sister Madly, a last start group

won 18 races during his career
including two runnings of the Hong
Kong International Sprint.
Sister Madly is just one of a number of quality fillies and mares
already entered for the feature breeding stock auction in the South
Hemisphere.
Others among the entries include
stakes winners Arapaho Miss,
Astrodame,
Belle
Bizarre,
Chakvedatze, Creative Plan, Dances
on Waves, Deer Valley, Fairy Oak,
Hidden Wonder, Hooness, Irongail,
Journey, Kryptelon, La Zoffany,
Lady Natasha, Le Plunge, Lolita

“Our office has been inundated
Military Rose (AUS)

with quality entries for the National
Broodmare Sale and we’re still compiling them as we speak,” Magic
Millions Acting Managing Director
David Chester said.
“The whole National Sale is promising to be one of the features on the
Australian thoroughbred calendar in
2011.”
“The catalogue for the National
Broodmare Sale is in the process of
being finalised - any vendors or
breeders with queries should contact
the Bloodstock Department of Magic
Millions as a matter of priority,”
Chester summed up.
ADELAIDE CLASSIC FORM
STANDS UP AT SANDOWN
romising two-year-old Star
Salute emphasised the strength
and competitiveness of the
recent Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO
Classic field by scoring a solid win at
Sandown.
A member of the all conquering
Peter Moody stable at Caulfield, Star
Salute finished on the placgetters
heels in the recent Morphettville fea-
P
ture when sixth.
She is unbeaten in her home state
after kicking away her career in style
when a strong all the way winner at
Sale in early March.
A daughter of former Magic
Millions Classic winner General
Nediym, Star Salute was purchased
by Moody for $100,000 from the
draft of Baramul Stud at last year’s
Magic Millions National Yearling
Sale.
Moody’s stable rider Luke Nolen
rode Star Salute in Adelaide and was
down to ride the filly again today but
Ben Melham stepped in as a replacement with Nolen indisposed with illness.
“He’s a good guy Trumby (Nolen)
and I’m always happy to fill in for
him,” Melham said after the win.
“She’s hard fit and she controlled
the race,” he added. “I let her rip just
before the corner and she was strong
to the line.”
“She felt really good under me.
She quickened really well and there’s
definitely more wins in store for
her.”

GINGERBREAD MAN BACK
TO BEST IN SPRINT
ingerbread Man bounced back
to his brilliant best in
Singapore with a strong win in
the Group Three $250,000 Singapore
3YO Sprint (1200m).
Racing for the first time since
January, Gingerbread Man showed
he was the best three-year-old in
Singapore when he beat fellow
Magic Millions graduate Excavator
in a driving finish.
The win delighted his trainer, for-
G
mer kiwi Bruce Marsh, after connections tried the proven sprinter at
1600 metres with a view toward the
recent Dubai World Cup meeting.
But last night back against his own
age group and at his preferred sprinting trip he proved he was a top class
performer.
“We had to push him a bit hard as
we wanted to find out if he would be
good enough to go to Dubai then,”
Marsh said.
“We knew he had the ability and
the potential, but we still had to get
the mileage in him, but unfortunately
it didn’t quite work out.”
“So we freshened him up to bring
him back to his best. The 3YO
Challenge was also next on his agenda, but I was worried we would run
out of time to get him back.”
“But his class helped him make up
for lost time. It was a great thrill to
see him win tonight.”
“He will most definitely go for the
second leg of the 3YO Series
(Singapore Three-Year-Old Classic
over 1400 metres on April 24).”
Gingerbread Man connections”He
ran a shocker over 1600 metres, but I
would still see him go over that trip
against his own age group.”
Winning rider Vlad Duric, who’s
now won two races aboard
Gingerbread Man, said the son of
Shamardal was back to his best and
was already looking forward to the
second leg of the series in three
weeks time.
“He jumped very well and did all
the work by himself,” Duric said.
“He had a lovely run throughout and
when I went for him, he fought very
hard.”
“He’s a real professional and all
credit must go to Bruce and his team
for having brought him back to his
best.”
“He’ll be meeting the same horses
at the next leg over 1400 metres. The
seven furlongs will be right up his
alley.”
Gingerbread Man is raced by Joe
Singh’s Gingerbread Stable after
being purchased on their behalf of
Magic
Millions
Bloodstock
Consultant James Dawson for
$30,000 at the 2009 Gold Coast
Yearling Sale.
That $30,000 investment has
proven a masterstroke with the exciting galloper having six wins and two
second placings from just nine starts
and earnings of over $418,000.
Gingerbread Man is one of two
winners and a placegetter, from three
to race, for the twice raced Hurricane
Sky mare Quaffle.
Quaffle, who was served last
spring by former champion racehorse and now leading sire Lonhro,
will go under the hammer at June’s
Magic Millions National Broodmare
Sale at the Gold Coast.
She is a half sister to the stakes
winner Golden Snitch and is from a

ocket Man confirmed himself
as the best Australian bred
sprinter on the international
circuit with a stunning win in the
US$2 million 2011 Dubai Golden
Shaheen (1200m) at Meydan.
The best horse ever to race in
Singapore, Rocket Man sat on the
outside of American speedstar
Euroears throughout, before unleashing a paralysing burst of speed over
the final 200 metres to race clear for
a two and a quarter length win.
The win helped erase memories of
last year’s Golden Shaheen when the
star Viscount gelding was narrowly
and unluckily beaten.
This time around nothing was
going to stop the mighty Rocket Man
from confirmed his status as one of
the world’s best.
Rocket Man was selected and purchased as a yearling for $60,000
from the 2007 Magic Millions
National Yearling Sale.
He was offered for sale by Tyreel
Thoroughbred Stud and purchased
by Andy Williams’ World Wide
Bloodstock.
Rocket Man is raced by South
African based businessman Fred
Crabbia and trained by master horseman Patrick Shaw.
“I was confident all week because
I have never had him better,” Shaw
said.
“Winning on an international stage
like Dubai is very special. I don’t
know where we go next with Rocket
Man.”
“Royal Ascot want him in the summer. But so do the Australians to take
on Black Caviar - so we’ll see,”
Shaw added.
Champion international jockey
Felix Coetzee has ridden many great
racehorses over the years and he
couldn’t speak more highly of

Rocket Man.
“I got a great start and I took him
back to give Euroears the lead and
tracked him,” Coetzee commented.
“I saw Mike Smith go for his horse
and when I picked up Rocket Man he
responded. He is so gutsy.”
“It was a great feeling - like being
in a top sports car - he was flying!”
“This is the most tenacious horse
I’ve ever ridden. He’s a super horse.”
Magic Millions Acting Managing
Director David Chester said the win
of Rocket Man was a great result for
Australia.
“Rocket Man is the best possible
advertisement for Australia. Bred
here, by a Western Australian based
sire - who raced with great success in
Australia - he was bred in New South
Wales and sold in Queensland.”
“Over recent seasons Rocket Man
has proved himself as one of the
world’s great racehorses - and he’s
doing it on the tough international
circuit.”
“Some horses can dominate in
their regions - but it’s when these
horses step out of their comfort zone
that their true champion qualities are
seen.”
“Congratulations to our South
African agent Andy Williams who
purchased Rocket Man as a yearling
as well as his owner Fred Crabbia
and trainer Pat Shaw.”
“Rocket Man was purchased from
our National Yearling Sale and this
year’s edition of the sale in June will
boasts its best ever catalogue,”
Chester summed up.
A half brother to the South African
Group One winner Our Giant,
Rocket Man has won 14 races from
18 starts - he was second at other
four and has never been beaten further than a long neck.
The $60,000 purchase has now
won the equivalent of A$3.76 million.
Australian bred Magic Millions
graduates went close to claiming the
big sprint double when evergreen
performer War Artist beat all but JJ
The Jet Place in the Group Two
US$1 million Al Quoz Sprint.
A mere head separated the duo in a
busy finish.

LOCAL CONSERVATORIUM
EYES GOODWOOD
oodwood aspirations for well
regarded
three-year-old
Conservatorium were given a
boost when he scored a strong win in
the listed Manihi Classic (1200m) at
Morphettville recently.
In holding out a gallant Dr Doute’s
to win by three parts of a length,
Conservatorium had his trainer Gary
Kennewell jumping with excitement
in the mounting yard.
The son of influential international
sire Royal Academy took up the role
of leader early and held that position
throughout despite a strong effort
from Dr Doute’s late in the race.
Kennewell said he didn’t weigh
down rider Craig Newitt with too
many instructions pre-race - but said
leading was always one of the main
options.
“Through the week we were actually planning to go back,” Kennewell
said. “We’d been working him from
G
back.”
“On the day we just weren’t really
sure. There didn’t appear much
speed in the race.”
“I told Craig if Believe ‘n’ Achieve
jumped well to just slot in behind
her, if she doesn’t, go straight to the
front.”
“I still believe he’s going to be a
better horse from behind (in the
field). But he’s still green - still very
raw.”
“He’s always shown us plenty of
ability and he’s won four of seven
now,” he added.
Kennewell said Conservatorium
would run next in the DC McKay
Stakes and if he came through that
well and with a positive result he
could run in the state’s best sprint
race - the Group One Goodwood.
“The Don McKay looks a nice race
for him,” he noted. “But if he didn’t
make the Goodwood we wouldn’t
stress - he’s only a three-year-old.”
Kennewell took a shine to
Conservatorium when offered by
Emerald Thoroughbred at the 2009
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale and he went to $50,000 to buy
him.
The gelding is raced by strong stable client Santo Guagliardo and he’s
now earned over $116,000 from just
seven starts - four of which have
been wins.
The 159th individual stakes winner
for Royal Academy, Conservatorium

STRADBROKE MISSION FOR
BEETHOG
tradbroke Handicap plans for
Beethog were given a boost
when the classy mare scored a
gutsy all the win in the listed Silk
Stocking Handicap (1200m), Gold
Coast.
Prepared at the track by Les Kelly,
Beethog was sent across the field
from a wide barrier early by Joe
Bowditch and from there they
wouldn’t be headed - beating out fellow Magic Millions graduate
Casholet in a driving finish.
An emotional Kelly said after the
race that Beethog had always shown
connections loads of ability and she
would be tested at racing’s elite level
in the coming weeks.
“From there (the outside draw) we
had to go forward,” he said. “She’s
just so small - but she’s pretty good.”
“She’s very hard to handle and I
think that is why Greg (Ryan, senior
part owner) gave her to me,” Kelly
added with a chuckle.
“It’s just great to win this race here
on our home track - especially year

Kelly has trained a number of
classy gallopers including Black Ink
and Devil and he has a very good
opinion of Beethog as well.
“I’ve had some real good horses
and this is a good filly as well.”
“She’s going to the Stradbroke,” he
summed up. “She had a foot injury
after she won the Guineas and she’s
only had four starts since then.”
Beethog, now a multiple stakes
winner, is doing a great job for her
connections.
On this card last year the four-yearold daughter of Shovhog won the
Gold Coast Guineas for comeback
jockey Justin Stanley - who ironically won the previous race at Ipswich
just minutes earlier.
Beethog’s impressive record reads
out at four wins and four minor placings from just 13 starts and earnings
of $235,650 - not bad considering
the Raheen Stud offering could have
been yours for just $10,000 at the
2008 Magic Millions National

One of six winners, from six to

SHOOTOFF BOOST FOR
NATIONAL YEARLING SALE
ext month’s Magic Millions
National
Yearling
Sale
received a boost when quality
three-year-old Shootoff won the
$100,000 Lord Mayor’s Cup at
Canterbury.
Sent out the favourite after winning the Frank Packer Plate at his
previous start, Shootoff treated his
rivals with contempt, cruising home
under Josh Adams to win by almost
three lengths.
A son of Duelled, Shootoff is
trained by Graeme Rogerson and his
stable foreman Roger Elliott was
impressed with the victory.
“He’s really maturing into a nice
horse,” Elliott said. “He’s getting
stronger and better with time.”
The gelding will almost certainly
head north to take his place in feature
races over the Brisbane Winter
Carnival according to Elliott.
N
Winning rider Josh Adams said his
main concern during the race was in
the home straight when his charge
bolted clear of his rivals - worrying
he may have got to the lead too early
- he shouldn’t have worried.
“He did a great job,” Adams said.
“He’s a bit above these.”
“He had no weight on his back and
during the race he had the perfect
run.”
“The speed was really good. I just
waited until we came to the corner.
He put paid to them very quickly
which worried me a little bit because
I didn’t want to hit the front that
early - but he went on with it really
well,” Adams summed up.
A three quarter brother to Shootoff
has been consigned by Evergreen
Stud Farm for the upcoming Magic
Millions National Yearling Sale.
Catalogued as Lot 1986, the bay or
brown colt is by Duelled and from
the Tights mare Intrim.
Intrim is the dam of six winners

The Magic Millions National

lots catalogued.
The National Sale as a whole will
commence on May 25 with the first
of three sessions comprising the
National Weanling Sale.
ROSE BLOOMS AS SALE
DATE APPROACHES
tar filly Military Rose emphasised her status as one of the
star lots of the upcoming Magic
Millions National Broodmare Sale
with a classy all the way win in the
Group Three Gold Coast Guineas
(1200m).
Back racing at her home track for
the first time since her win in the
Magic Millions 2YO Classic last
year, Military Rose replicated that
performance with a strong on speed
victory.
The daughter of General Nediym
appreciated the improving slow track
and under the urgings of leading
local rider Daniel Griffin she still
held a half length margin on the line
over runner-up and fellow Gold
Coast purchase Celtic Dancer.
Trainer Gillian Heinrich was all
S
smiles after notching
another feature race
victory on her home
track.
“I’m
absolutely
rapt,”
Heinrich
beamed. “She is
back!”
“I was a little bit
worried about four
weeks ago when she
started down there in
Sydney.”
“But I think she is
the sort of filly, that if
you let her lead she is comfortable
and she doesn’t fight and doesn’t
choke down.”
“Everything works out better for
her (when she leads) and obviously
Dan rode her like that today and
she’s back.”
Heinrich had Military Rose in
Sydney for some of their carnival
features but returned home frustrated
after continual rain left Sydney’s
tracks drenched.
“We stayed in Sydney ticking her
over for about six weeks and it just
rained and rained. We put her in
everything and just kept scratching
and scratching.”
“Eventually we brought her home
for this race. This morning they said
(the track was) a slow 6 and I just
hoped it would pick up by this afternoon.”
Heinrich is unsure whether the filly
will race again prior to go under the
hammer at the National Broodmare
Sale in June.
“This was really the race for her.
She’s going to sales in June for a
broodmare. There are those 1350s
coming up, but if she can get the
1350, that’s another thing.”
“We’ll just have to see after today
and have a think about what we’re
Military Rose (AUS)
going to do with her,” Heinrich
summed up.
The filly has been an extraordinary
money spinner for connections following her purchase by the Heinrich
team for $155,000 at the 2009 Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
With six wins and a placing from
11 starts her earnings currently sit at
an imposing haul of $1,626,900.
Military Rose is catalogued as lot
number 733 and she is one of eight
quality lots consigned by Heinrich
Bloodstock.
Also in the draft is Swiss Rose third placegetter in today’s Silk

already a proven stakes winner.

DUBLEANNY

PROUD MISS
r a n d
Melbourne
m a r e
Dubleanny enhanced her outstanding
race record with a thrilling last stride
win in the listed Proud Miss Stakes
(1200m) at Morphettville.
Completing a big day for Magic
Millions graduates, Dubleanny flew
home in the final 50 metres to nab
Cornelia Marie and Cat’s Pyjamas
who were in a titanic struggle for
much of the straight.
In the end it was the class mare
who got the result in a thrilling finish
with a long neck separating the first
three runners.
Dubleanny was sent out the drifting $1.75 favourite on the strength of
her brilliant previous start win over
accomplished Melbourne performers
Returntosender and True Persuasion.
A daughter of Dubleo, Dubleanny
boasts the outstanding record of
eight wins and three runner up placings from just 15 lifetime starts.
She’s earned her connections, the
Vinery Syndicate and the Newstead
Syndicate, an ever increasing haul of
over $460,000.
Dubleanny was sold twice by
Magic Millions prior to joining the
Mick Price stable.
She made $34,000 when originally
sold by Torryburn Stud at the 2007
National Weanling Sale before being
purchased by the Vinery team for
$65,000 when offered by Murrulla
Stud at the 2008 Gold Coast Yearling

LONE ROCK WINS CRACKING GOODWOOD
one Rock sent her residual value
soaring when she gunned down
Golden Slipper winner Crystal
Lily to win today’s Group One The
Goodwood
(1200m)
at
Morphettville.
A member of the in form Robert
Smerdon stable, Lone Rock was ridden perfectly by top local rider Clare
Lindop and the filly was able to race
clear late to beat a crack field.
Smerdon was a happy man - and
relieved his owners had elected to
run her here than in another lesser
graded race on the day.
“She’s been flying this filly and I
was always heading her to this race
but when I saw the line up I was
tempted to go to the fillies and mares
race - the Proud Miss.”
L
RACETRACK Magic Millions Preview 2011
“But the owner was committed - he
said she’s a Group Three winner so
let’s give her a chance at Group One
- I’m rapt. She’s a very talented filly.
She’s done everything right this
prep. She’s had a faultless preparation.”
“We had a chance if things fell into
place and credit to Clare - she’d done
her homework - she knew exactly
where she wanted to be and carried it
off beautifully.”
Adding further satisfaction to the
win for Smerdon was the fact the
filly is raced by one of the stable’s
most loyal clients.
“It’s a really good result. He’s been
a long time client (the owner) Tony
Bongiorno - probably been with me
20 plus years. He’s had a lot of horses but this is his first Group One.”
“She was always a bit underdone.
Each run was a stepping stone in
coming here. This is the first day
she’s been really ready to produce
what she’s got.”
“We knew she had a big run in her
and we were just waiting for that day.
This was the aim right from the time
she came in from the paddock.”
In winning her main mission of the
campaign, Lone Rock will almost
certainly head to the paddock with
Melbourne’s spring carnival in mind.
“I think she’ll probably head for a
break and then we’ll look at what
there is in the spring - job done!”
Lone Rock ($31) raced to Crystal
Lily ($4.20 fav) in the straight and
then pulled away to win by a widening length and a half margin.
Consistent galloper Pinwheel ($7)
edged out Valentine Miss ($13) for
third place, a long neck behind the
runner-up.
Among the also rans were proven
Group One winners Response,
Ortensia, Eagle Falls and Toorak
The win was the fourth at Group
One level for popular local rider
Clare Lindop.
“I’m very excited,” Lindop
beamed. “Morphettville at 1200
metres - it’s my favourite course and
distance to ride. I was a bit wide, but

had cover and travelled well the trip.
We got the right split at the top of the
straight. When I said go she really
unleashed. Full credit to the horse
and to Robert Smerdon’s team,” she
added.
Lone Rock, a daughter of Coolmre
Stud’s red hot sire Fastnet Rock, was
purchased by the Aquanita Racing
team for $75,000 from the draft of
Glastonbury Farms at the 2009
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale. The valuable broodmare
prospect has already earned almost
$400,000 and she’s just a three-yearold with her life ahead of her.
She is the only runner to date for
her dam, the twice winning Lion
Cavern mare, Pride of Pine - a half
sister to stakes placegetter and three
time winner Calm Before.
Second dam Storm as Night is a
half sister to the stakes winners
Procrastinate (dam of Laisserfaire,
Foreplay, Time Thief and Personify),
Galapagos Girl and Kampaign.
Lone Rock’s dam Pride of Pine
will be offered at the upcoming
Magic Millions National Broodmare
Sale as part of a quality draft from
Glastonbury Farms.
She was served last spring by
Fastnet Rock - thus the resultant foal
will be a full relation to today’s
Group One winner.
Pride of Pine has been catalogued
as lot number 752 and she is due to
go under the hammer at the Gold
Coast during the fourth session of the
National Sale on May 29.
Earlier this year a full sister to
Lone Rock was purchased by Kieran
Moore for $230,000 at the Gold
Coast Yearling Sale.

SHADOWS STARS IN DERBY
nthony Cummings’ long time
faith in Shadows in the Sun was
realised in the best possible
fashion today when he scored a brilliant all the way win in the Group
One South Australian Derby
(2500m) at Morphettville.
Cummings, born and bred in
Adelaide, was delighted that one of
the stable’s unsung stars was able to
win at racing’s elite level.
In winning his third stakes race for
the day for Ben Melham, Shadows in
the Sun led throughout and despite
the efforts of rivals outstayed the
field in the dominant performance.
“I sent him to Adelaide with a good
degree of confidence,” Cummings
noted. “The key was getting him
back on top of the ground.”
“His form in Sydney, when you
take out those runs on badly rain
affected tracks, was pretty good and
I gave him a good chance today.”
“Ben rode him really well and after
getting to the front he seemed to me
to be able to pinch a couple of soft
sectionals mid race and then he was
strong in the straight,” Cummings
added.
Cummings said he wouldn’t be
making a decision on the immediate
future of Shadows in the Sun for a
while.
“I’ll wait and get him back to
Sydney and see how he is. I’ll keep
an eye on the weather because there
is a chance he could head to Brisbane
for the (Queensland) Derby.”
“Otherwise we could tip him out
for a rest,” he added.
Cummings took a shine to
Shadows in the Sun at the 2009
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale and went to $280,000 to secure
him from the draft of Kitchwin Hills.
“He was a really cracking individual at the sales and we bought him
thinking he was a Magic Millions
A
Classic type,” Cummings noted.
“He showed plenty of ability at
two and things just didn’t quite go to
plan much for him early - but he’s
really developed into a lovely
horse.” Cummings said Shadows in
the Sun was such a good looking
yearling that he didn’t have any trouble selling him to clients - thankfully
his wife kept a share. “Lets just say
they’re a very happy bunch of owners now,” he summed up.
Shadows in the Sun ($21) cruised
home to beat Echoes in Heaven
($6.50) by three parts of a length,
while local filly Lalla Rookh ($31)
ran third just ahead of Kittens
($6.50). The favourite Right of
Refusal ($3.30), a last start stakes
winner of the VRC St Leger, beat
just two runners home, while second
pick Backgammon ($4.80) was fifth
- a tick over two lengths from the
winner. The second Group One winner for Danehill’s group winning son
Dane Shadow, Shadows in the Sun is
one of two stakes winners produced
by his dam Best Out West. A lightly
raced daughter of Best Western, Best
Out West is also the dam of Fernhill
Handicap winner Stone Canyon as
well as Sydney winner Shadow
Miss. Further back it is the same
family as stakes winners Distancia,
Eureka Jewel, Spurred On, Live
Theatre, Sermon and Manawapoi.
