Bruce is in Sabah on the island of Borneo. It is one of the last few places to see
Asia's endangered great ape, the Orangutan, and that's why Bruce is here. A
hundred years ago, nearly a quarter of a million Orangutans lived in the forest of
Borneo. A century later, around 75% have been wiped out. Habitat destruction
could mean Orangutans will disappear from the jungle in less than 15 years.
Bruce's journey starts in Sandakan, but before he head into the wilds of Borneo, he
visits the Sandakan war memorial - the start of the infamous Sandakan Death
Marches where over 2000 Australian and British troops died. As an ex-servicemen,
Sandakan holds a special place Bruce's heart and he is moved when signing the
remembrance book.
The war is long over, and now it's Borneo's wildlife that is in crisis. Borneo was once
covered with pristine rainforest, but palm oil production has led to devastating
deforestation. With the jungles fast disappearing, many species are now critically
endangered. One of the worst affected, is the Orangutan.
Bruce visits Sepilok Orangutan Centre where they take in orphan Orangutans,
rehabilitate them, and return them to the jungle. He meets the vet, Dr Cecelia
Boklin who introduces Bruce to the orphans Orangutans. Bruce falls instantly in
love with these little guys as they play and bathe and swing on the nursery jungle
gym. It might look fun, but this is serious business. If these youngsters don't learn
how to survive in the jungle, they face a life in captivity. The Sepilok Rehabilitation
Centre depends on the dedication of people like Cecelia and the generosity of
people fundraising to keep the centre running.
With acres of rainforest disappearing daily, Bruce heads deep into Borneo, hoping
to get a glimpse of jungle life. In Tabin Wildlife Reserve, Bruce's guide is Forest
Ranger Saimon Ambi. He's been tracking animals for over 30 years. As they trek in
the magnificent virgin rainforest, it's not long before they meet one of Bruce's scaly
mates - a green tree pit viper. Bruce and Saimon then encounter a herd of pygmy
elephants. For Bruce it is very exciting to see an elephant in the wild. But tension
builds when the elephants start to surround them. There is the very real possibility
of an ambush.
The Pygmy elephant is also on the endangered list - another victim of Borneo's
palm oil explosion. But Bruce goes to meet Michael Lee, who thinks progress and
preservation can co-exist. He runs a palm oil plantation, but has left half his land as
a sanctuary for hundreds of rare and endangered proboscis monkeys. This place is
living proof that the palm oil industry doesn't have to mean the end for Borneo's
wildlife.
Just then Bruce is called out on a rescue. Joining a rescue team from Sepilok, they
visit a palm oil plantation where a baby Orangutan has been found. It is weak and
in a bad way. They transport the orphan Orangutan back to Sepilok and Cecelia
conducts a medical examination. Although he is in a poor condition, with ongoing
care and medical help at hand, it looks like this little fella's story will have a happy
ending.

Kuala Lumpur is developing as fast as the other economic “tigers”. From Formula 1
to KLCC, it has all the trappings of a contemporary Asian cosmopolitan city. But
what visitors connect with most indelibly is the inherent vibe of openess that
permeates her people, something they never lost on the road to modernity. It's a
fascinating juxtaposition: one of the fastest-developing nations is driven by some
of the most easy-going and hospitable hearts. Kuala Lumpur is The Gateway, that
starts our journey to explore Malaysia's own “open house” brand of warm
hospitality. Set against the backdrop of the Hari Raya and Deepavali festivities, The

Straits of Malacca, is a journey through time and history: from epic landforms that
evoke ancient legends, to tales of spice traders, pirates, princes and warriors. Where
modern day travellers can find an exotic blend of cultures that truly reflects the
melting pot of Asia, or simply escape into a world of natural beauty. So much of
Malaysia's story can be told through a journey across the seas…even Denise's own

strongholds. Encircled by logging operations and plantations which ravage the
area, the great wetland zone of Kinabatangan offers a palette of diverse habitats
to the remaining representatives of endangered species.
It’s in this fragile environment that the last forest rhinoceroses, orangutans and the
surprising pygmy elephant must continually adapt to the whims of the water cycle.

“Ipoh” - the name conjures serene, natural images, old colonial heritage
architecture and tin mining industry, is sited about 200 kilometres north of
Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur. Seetoh is surprised at the kind responses he
received with his sometimes ridiculous requests and claims. Will they hand him the
family’s secret recipe at this iconic and age old snack shop? And what happens if
the old unrestored building that a funky hipster café resides in, is considered
“unsafe”. And at the most famous chicken rice restaurant in Ipoh, the owner
responds with a “Did-you-really-ask-me-that” look when pounced on with the
crew’s query. Watch the crew go on a wild hunt out of town for a farmer that grows
an Ipoh icon.. bean sprouts, and check out just makes it so special.
Seetoh’s back with more food surprises! His pranks on hawkers takes on another
level this season, as his curious crew puts hawkers, chef and cooks into tight and
tough spots.
Watch Seetoh and his mischievious gang bring the best and the worse out of them.
Sometimes, the surprise is on Seetoh. Watch some of the most famed Kuala

In the early morning of 11th September 1941, Penang Island, a two century old
British Fortress of the Far East and once known as The Paradise Island, was
bombed to it's core by the Imperial Japanese Airforce.
Up to that point, Penang - a flourishing port connecting South East Asia to the
Indian Ocean - new little about the war and a false sense of security circulated
around the island.
When the planes did come, residents crowded the streets unaware of what was
about to happen. As the reign of Japanese terror unleashed itself upon the local
population, Penang Island soon found themselves abandoned by British Forces.
Retold by residents and survivors who fought hard to survive the ordeal ,
1941: The Fall of Penang, relives this largely unknown story of the Pacific War.
"Selamat" to exotic wildlife, mouthwatering street snacks, and the multiculturalism
of East Malaysia! This time Fun Taiwan's Janet is set to visit the third largest island
in the world, Borneo, where the state of Sabah and Sarawak are located.
Janet heads into Malaysia's famous rainforest for an adventure, and arrives at the
floating village of Weston to search for the Pinocchio of monkeys (proboscis
monkeys). She also visits the village of "Cowboy of the Eest" - Bajau for a
extravagant traditional wedding.
No trip is complete without a visit to the local eateries, so Janet tries a bowl of rich
Sarawakan laksa for breakfast and waits 45 minutes just to taste the famous
"kolomee".

British naturalist, Nick Baker, travels to South East Asia to embark on a unique eco
adventure in the Malaysian Peninsula - one of the most bio-diverse landscapes on
the planet. His journey begins in the 130 million year old Belum-Temengor
rainforest, where meets he learns the ancient art of blow pipe hunting from the
Jahai people. Nick joins a WWF field biologist on a tiger tracking mission and comes
face to face with one the longest legged spiders in the world. Travelling to the lush
valley of Lenggong, Nick visits the caves of Gua Gunung Runtuh, where the 11,000
year old Perak Man was discovered. Along the way he tries his hand at elephant
caretaking and sees a rafflesia for the time in full bloom, one the world’s largest
flowering plants.
Nick travels to the depths of the Bornean jungle to find the only poisonous primate
in the world; the Slow Loris. It looks like a cuddly toy, but it carries a poison that
can prove fatal, all delivered by large, powerful teeth; the Slow Loris is a weird
creature with a lethal trick up its sleeve. Small, shy and nocturnal, it lives in the
towering rainforest canopy. So to get closer Nick climbs 40m to spend a vertigoriddled night from hell listening to the sounds of the jungle and wishing he was
back on terra firma. Local tracker, Saimon, is on hand to share traditional
techniques and build traps to lure the loris out of the trees. Whilst Nick waits for the
poisonous primate to bite, he meets some other astonishing forest dwellers
including his all-time favourite frog, the Wallace flying frog. He has just seven days
in Borneo and having tried every trick in the field guide, what is it going to take to
find the Slow Loris?

Malaysia’s Second Penang Bridge is the longest bridge in Southeast Asia. Building
this 16.9 km long Marine structure will prove a challenge to the two construction
giants from two different countries – Malaysia and China. This unusual
construction model will prove to be a monumental challenge where it is split

they be able to coordinate the works to ensure the Malaysian road deck locks onto
the Chinese piers?

Just as the project is beginning, a design change is required that throws engineers
into a spin. The Malaysia government now wants the bridge to be earthquake

come up with a solution when the construction has already started? Will there be a
massive cost overrun and a lengthy delay?

Denise Keller how everything they do and create is somehow connected to the spirit

craft and way of life is what secures a lasting identity for Malay culture. The Cradle
uncovers the exquisite beauty and grace of life on the East Coast through a journey
in search of originality and authenticity. Host is Denise Keller.

he is continuing a tribal tradition that goes back hundreds of years. In recent years,
Anwar has felt old age set in, and unless his son follows in his footsteps to take over
the business, Anwar will see his business fall into the hands of the local Chinese. So
it’s Anwar’s son who will have to rise to the occasion, overcome his fear of climbing
and take over the business to save their tribal tradition from decline.

Malaysia. The mangroves play a vital role in sustaining not only local livelihoods,
but also the myriad of wildlife that balances Malaysia’s delicate eco-systems. This
film takes us deep into the mangroves to reveal the harmonious relationship
between mankind and the natural world, while also serving to protect the mainland
from the threat of tsunamis. But the mangroves in Pahang also harbor a darker
side. Legend has it, pirates used the mangroves to pry on unsuspecting victims –
and with the recent discovery of human remains, locals are asking if the pirates still

dream of becoming an architect, he is now a product designer for VW+BS. Behind
every successful Tastemaker there is an inspiring story to be told, stories of how
they made their way to be trailblazers within their respective industries and
pioneering trends that attracted bands of loyal followers. During this celebratory
month, what better way than to reflect on what we have achieved as well as look

out in the stall after school except when he wants to play soccer where he usually
makes tons of excuses. He is also a mischievous kid who likes to play pranks on
people especially to his best friends Gopal, Yaya and Ying making him funny and
annoying at the same time. As a superhero he has the power to control 3 elementsearth, wind and lightning. Ultimately he can split into three, forming 3 specialized
elemental clones within a limited time.
This is the story of an unlikely but extraordinary wildlife discovery which has led to a
last minute campaign to save one of Borneo's most secretive and charismatic
animals. The Pygmy Elephant is much more special and unique than anyone had
ever thought possible. In the past two years scientists have found irrefutable
evidence that this pachyderm is not the introduced pest that experts once believed
it to be, but instead has a history on Borneo that goes back hundreds of thousands
of years. Now the race is on to save the Pygmy Elephant before it's swept away by
the wave of development that's overwhelming its forest home. Little is known about
this fascinating creature because it lives a sedentary life deep in Borneo's forest.
We must first enter the dark undergrowth where it lives and discover the secrets of
this elusive animal.

Wildest
Indochina: Ep
4 Malaysia
Ch.556
8:00 PM
Malaysia is one of a handful of countries in the world described as ‘mega-diverse’.
It’s a land of two halves - West Malaysia is on the mainland, the tip of Indochina’s
peninsula, and Eastern Malaysia is the top portion of Borneo, the third largest
island in the world. Malaysia sits in the tropical belt just north of the equator where
warm temperatures and high rainfall provide ideal conditions for life, and a huge
variety of different habitats including rainforests, caves, swamps and mountains
give wildlife an almost infinite number of ways to survive.
It’s not just the abundance of wildlife that’s so striking, but how strange much of it
is. Malaysia is home to some of the largest, smallest, and downright weirdest life
forms on the planet, many of which occur nowhere else on earth. In Borneo’s
lowland mangrove swamps proboscis monkeys, pot-bellied and big-nosed, stay out
of snapping distance of giant saltwater crocodiles, while high on the slopes of
Mount Kinabalu plants and animals forge strange alliances, helping each other
survive. In the canopy of Malaysia’s ancient rainforest orang utans, ‘people of the
forest’, swing effortlessly through the branches while in the gloom thirty metres
below predatory insects and giant parasitic flowers thrive.
Rivers and streams carve up the forests, drawing pygmy elephants to their grassy
banks. Water trickles down through Malaysia’s soft bedrock excavating vast caves
where bats and cockroaches thrive their millions. And on much of the long
coastline, mangrove swamps form an uneasy halfway house between land and sea,
a topsy-turvy place where fish walk on land, tree roots reach for the skies and
where, at night, the branches light up with the twinkle of a million glittering fireflies.
Malaysia’s animals and plants have exploited every opportunity to carve out an
existence and so have adapted to some very strange ways of life. But
specialisation can also mean fragility and as more of Malaysia’ forests give way to
palm plantations, the future of its wildlife becomes ever more precarious.

On this passage, Denise sets off to explore culinary cultures in the east Malaysian
states of Sabah and Sarawak. Borneo's awesome geography makes sure that any
journey to do with food here is bound to be an adventure. Kuching's fiery breakfast
of champions Sarawak Laksa kicks off some action-packed feasting in Malaysia's
biggest state. From the pepper farms and fish markets of its capital, Denise hits the
water on jetskis and boats leading her deeper into the wild for some serious
hunting with the Iban. Cutting her way through the peat swamps of the coast, she
discovers some surprises in the Melanau people's “tree of life”. But no culinary
journey is complete without celebrating Asia's soul of sustenance – rice. Sabah's
annual Kadazandusun Rice Harvest Festival sets the stage for a highly entertaining
climax to this incredible passage. Denise's love for Borneo ensures any Feast in the
East is a massive adventure.

PENANG

The Malaysian city of Malacca is famed for its Peranakan heritage - descendants of
early Chinese migrants who settled in Penang, Malacca and Singapore, intermarrying with local Malays.
The resulting Nyonya cuisine is the blending of Chinese ingredients and wokcooking techniques with spices used by the Malay community. The food is tangy,
aromatic, spicy and herbal with key ingredients like coconut milk, galangal, pandan
leaves, lemongrass and cincaluk - a powerfully flavored, sour and salty shrimpbased condiment that is typically mixed with lime juice, chillies and shallots.
Setting it apart from its other Peranakan counterpart Penang, is its use of coconut
milk - Penang being further north shows Thai influences, such as more liberal use of
tamarind and other sour ingredients.
Adding to this Peranakan influence is also the Portuguese colonists who contributed
dishes like Devil's Curry to the town's already rich cuisine.
Bobby explored the charming Malaysian city of Malacca in a wildly decorated
trishaw and discovered the Straits Chinese culture and its influence of food here
which can be seen in dishes such as the easily available Nyonya Laksa and Nyonya
kuih.
Bobby met up with Florence Tan, affectionately known as the "Queen of Nyonya
Cusine" who brought him on a Peranakan tour starting with the Baba and Nyonya
Museum, to Charlie's where he learned about the preparation of the Nyonya cakes
and snacks, to street stalls famed for its Nyonya cuisine.
Bobby then visited A Formosa, a fortress built by the Portuguese during its reign to
protect city from invaders. It is among the oldest surviving European
architectural remains in Asia. Bobby also visited The Stadhuys that was once a
centre of the Dutch administration in Malacca. It is believed to be the oldest Dutch
building in the East.
From history to trade, Bobby decided to try his hand at fishing with the local
fisherman and set off in the ocean to catch some fish! He then attempted to sell his
catch at the local fish stall but was unfortunately not very successive!
Sticking to what he knows best, Bobby met up with Michael, owner of Seafarer to
learn how to make the very famous and popular dish - Ikan Bakar which is simply
barbequed fish with lots and lots of special chili sauce!
A weekend in Malacca is incomplete without a visit to Jonker Street night market.
So with Lynette in tow, Bobby ate his way through the various street food available
in this colorful night market.
After learning all about the rich Peranakan culture, Bobby attempted his hand at
making a famous Peranakan dish - Ayam Buah Keluak with the help of Marcia, the
owner of Bibik Neo, a popular Peranakan restaurant.
Besides learning how to make Ayam Buah Keluak, Bobby also made Chicken Rice
Balls, an obvious Chinese dish, and Devil's Curry, a Portuguese Eurasian dish that is
fiery hot!

Presenter Denise Keller explores the country with Malaysia's leading contemporary
artists. Far beyond galleries and exhibitions, these are exciting journeys showcasing
the diverse locations and cultures that inspire their celebrated work. Full of artistic
eccentricities - sometimes quirky, sometimes profound, always entertaining, this
passage presents Malaysia through the prism of imagination. But Denise soon
discovers that the real fun is in the journey of creativity through this diverse
country. Denise's trip takes her through Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Johor, Negeri
Sembilan and Terengganu uncovering engaging subjects and stunning scenes from
the soul of Malaysia. Along the way, an eclectic ensemble of artists draw Denise
into the fascinating process of their work, from vibrant watercolours to the stark
realism of charcoal. What this passage reveals is how Malaysia's rich layers of
cultural diversity make it possible to visit the same paces again and again but see it
in different light, shades and colours every time.
The 450-meter Petronas Towers, the tallest twin towers on the planet, pushed the
outer limits of construction technology and stand as a symbol of Malaysian pride
and modernity - all in a country that had never built a mega skyscraper before. But
building the towers was a construction challenge like no other - at every turn
unexpected problems threatened the project. The towers were built in a torrential
monsoon belt. The construction site wasn't made of bedrock but unstable sediment,
and the towers were not made of lightweight steel but reinforced concrete. The sixyear endeavor turned out to be a high-risk showcase project with a hugely
ambitious schedule.

This story begins where it ends. Though in a symbolic sense, it is a story that is
never ending. At Beting Beras Basah near the mouth of the Perak river, His Royal
Highness (HRH) Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah steps off a boat onto the shoreline
of the Malacca Straits. This moment is the final milestone in a series of royal rites
required to officially enthrone HRH as the 35th ruler of Perak Darul Ridzuan, the
“Abode of Grace”. This scene at the mouth of the river marks the end of the royal
enthronement ceremonies but repeated generation after generation over hundreds
of years, it symbolises both new beginnings and the continuity of time-honoured
traditions. Following the fall of the Malacca Sultanate to European colonial
empires, the next generation of its royal line resurfaced right here at the mouth of
the Perak river. In 1528, Sultan Muzaffar Shah 1 established a new royal identity
that has continued an unbroken journey ever since; further upriver and deeper into
the heart of this land.
Till today, what makes Perak's enthronement event stand out from Malaysia's other
royal states is the profound symbolism of the river. From its epic opening scene at
the mouth of the Perak river, this story resets itself at Istana Iskandariah in the
royal town of Kuala Kangsar where the elaborate enthronement ceremonies begin.
With the Perak river as its narrative spine, the story makes its way back downriver,
eventually returning to the shoreline of the Straits where the Sultanate (and this
story) first began.
Throughout the journey rich with royal rites, symbolic stops along the way take the
story into different tributaries. HRH Sultan Nazrin's visits to ancestral tombs open
chapters that tell the illustrious history of Perak and how the Abode of Grace played
such pivotal roles in the story of Malaysia. Like the river itself, it is a story that in
many ways has a timeless quality about it. A story that reveals just how intrinsic the
royal identity is, not just to the state but to country as a whole.
