It’s summertime in Paris!
And summertime comes with its own
assortment of fantastic deals, outings
and discoveries for all, of music and
performances and of ingenious ideas
for exploring Paris and the Paris region
from a new angle. Does a trendy street-art
or casual walk in the footsteps of the
Impressionists appeal to you? How
about electronic music on the banks
of the Seine or a jazz concert in a treeshaded park? Whether your interests run
to the royal in Versailles or Saint-Germain,
medieval getaways in Provins or Dourdan,
or digging into history in Auvers or
Fontainebleau, Paris and its region offer
hundreds of events, from tiny to massive,
offbeat to crowd-pleasing, open to all.
They will take you from the Eiffel Tower
to Disneyland Paris, the Rock en Seine
festival to outdoor operas, the tranquillity
of formal French gardens to the raucous
enthusiasm of football matches. Paris
and the Paris region have many facets
and you can explore and experience them
any way you like.
Have a wonderful summer in and around
Paris and thank you for coming. Make
yourself at home.

AROUND THE FONTAINEBLEAU FOREST
The Fontainebleau Forest, which you can explore
on a painters’ trail (1), and nearby villages
inspired the landscape artists and precursors
of Impressionism who came there to paint
this subject. Get to know them in Barbizon,
stopping first in the regional museum (2).
The Auberge Ganne inn where they stayed
recreates the life and atmosphere of the era.
Then stop by the Jean-François Millet

and worked from 1849 to 1875, painting
his main masterpieces, such as The Angelus

IMPRESSIONIST COUNTRYSIDE
As train travel came into its own, the banks
of the Seine became a party spot for Parisians.
Many open-air terraces flourished on the
riverside, inspiring Renoir, Sisley, Monet,
Pissarro and Berthe Morisot, among others.
Foremost among them was the Maison
de Fournaise house in Chatou, immortalized
by Renoir in the Luncheon of the Boating
Party painting. Here and in Croissy-sur-Seine,
Louveciennes, Marly-le-Roi and Le Pecq,
reproductions of the landscapes painted by
the Impressionists are on display at intervals
along four trails, in the exact spots where
the painters set up their easels. In Bougival,
a trail along the water’s edge highlights other
viewpoints captured by the masters of light.

Napoleon called it “The true home of kings, the house of ages”. Set in 130 hectares of grounds and gardens,
the 1,500-room Fontainebleau is the only royal and imperial château to be lived in continuously for seven
centuries. This makes it an authentic microcosm of the history of French art and architecture. Running
through 4 July, Louis XV à Fontainebleau is showing approximately 140 items – paintings, furniture,
art objects, porcelain and clothing – taken from the castle’s collections or on loan from French and foreign

South of Paris, between the forest and La Beauce plain, peaceful Dourdan retains a rich medieval
architectural heritage, including a 13th-century fortress and ramparts stretching 1,700 meters.
Completed in 1222, the château is one of the few fortresses
to remain structurally intact. Its towers, dry moats and
imposing 26-meter circular keep, affording an impressive
view of the town, are all still there. The “Musée de France”
museum housed in a former salt loft contains Gallo-Roman
and medieval pottery, furniture, paintings and 16th- to
20th-century sculptures. You can also journey into
the heart of the Middle Ages in the courtyard, through
activities and demonstrations of occupations from that
period (8>10/07). A night-time tour presents the château
from a different angle, enlivened by mock combats.
