FOOTBALL FOR EVERYONE THROUGH 31/08 The Tourist Office is holding a multi-sensory exhibition in Saint-Denis open to everyone and designed to accommodate the disabled. Tactile objects, scale models, sensory bins and subtitled videos recount the history of football, women’s take on the sport and new football equipment. It highlights the significant social changes that have occurred, the place of foreign-born players and the rise of women’s football. Posters, maps, stadium models, films and artwork aim to bring the French era of a universal sport back to life (through 18 September). Through 10 July. 03 Impressionism Follow the Masters of Light by viewing great works in Paris and visiting historic sites in the Paris region 04 Visit Auvers-sur-Oise: page 46 CAILLEBOTTE ESTATE This manor nestled in 11 hectares of grounds inspired major canvases by the master. You can explore it via augmented reality using a digital tablet. For a perfect visit, rent a small boat or canoe and go out onto the Yerres River, another of the artist’s major subjects and fixations. MORET-SUR-LOING Alfred Sisley produced many paintings in this tiny medieval town where he lived the last 20 years of his life. The guided tour entitled On the footsteps of Sisley retraces the motifs and viewpoints that inspired the painter, notably the Loing River, a pleasant canoeing spot. Get to know them in Barbizon, stopping first in the regional museum (2). The Auberge Ganne inn where they stayed recreates the life and atmosphere of the era. Then stop by the Jean-François Millet home-slash-studio (3), where the artist lived and worked from 1849 to 1875, painting his main masterpieces, such as The Angelus and The Gleaners. Housed in a former rail station, the Musée d’Orsay (1) contains the world’s best collection of Impressionist art. The Musée de l’Orangerie (2) houses the meandering Water Lilies murals, eight magnificent paintings by Monet. And you’ll find more Monet, including the iconic painting Impression, Sunrise, at the Musée Marmottan Monet (3). It has the top international collection of works by the father of Impressionism, plus a number of paintings by Berthe Morisot, Caillebotte, Sisley and Pissarro. Many open-air terraces flourished on the riverside, inspiring Renoir, Sisley, Monet, Pissarro and Berthe Morisot, among others. Foremost among them was the Maison de Fournaise house in Chatou, immortalized by Renoir in the Luncheon of the Boating Party painting. Here and in Croissy-sur-Seine, Louveciennes, Marly-le-Roi and Le Pecq, reproductions of the landscapes painted by the Impressionists are on display at intervals along four trails, in the exact spots where the painters set up their easels. In Bougival, a trail along the water’s edge highlights other viewpoints captured by the masters of light.
