עגנון gnon THE AGNON SCHOOL Agnon Matters! 1969-2014 2013-2014 | 5773-5774 | ANNUAL REPORT CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AGNON CLASS OF 2014! BOTTOM ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT): Kyle Flatow, Claude Lewis, Caleb Segar, Daniel Ruzhitskiy, Reed Abrams, Logan Goldberg MIDDLE ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT): Sophie Browner, Rachel Goetz, Callie Gordon, Jessica Linden, Leah Frydenberg, Leah Rudow, Tamara Joseph, Rachael Grossman, Sarah Borow, Clara Rose TOP ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT): Adam Graham-Mumma, Harry Strauss MAZAL TOV TO AGNON’S CLASS OF 2010 WHO WILL ATTEND: Allegheny College • Arizona State University – Honors College • Barnard College Case Western Reserve University • Emory University • Goucher College • Indiana University Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts • Maryland Institute College of Art • Miami University of Ohio • Northwestern University • Otterbein University • Princeton University • The College of Wooster • The Ohio State University – Honors Program The Ohio State University • Tufts University • University of Cincinnati • University of Denver • University of Kentucky • University of Pittsburgh • University of Rochester Vassar College • Williams College • Gap Year/Nativ College Leadership Program in Israel A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL AND BOARD CHAIR MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL AND BOARD CHAIR It was … an extraordinary year. Our educational leadership team took to Project Based Learning (PBL) with great passion, and our students reaped the benefits in terms of critical thinking and problem solving. We raised a record $600,000+ at our Annual Auction, including $475,000 toward a sorely needed gym expansion project. Our students and staff were divided into 12 Tribes (think Hogwarts’ Houses, without quidditch and wands) throughout the year, and we dedicated a new greenhouse, thanks to the generosity of “alumni parents” Wendy and Bill Sattin, which will offer an opportunity to study aquaponics and symbiotic relationships in nature. But the real magic (the non-Harry Potter kind) goes on in small ways, every day. It’s when a 2nd grader gets excited about reading her first full sentence in Hebrew and can’t wait to tell her parents; and it’s when a Middle Schooler prepares for weeks for the mock Rosenberg trial so he can do justice not only to social studies in general, but to Ethel and Julius. It’s when students get that ah-ha! moment and move from the accumulation of facts to the development of wisdom – and it’s when they simply have fun learning. It’s when they develop a love of who they are and a respect for those around them. It’s in the creation of a community. To all of you who helped to create this amazing place – thank you. Our partnership with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland; our support from donors throughout the city; the incredible contribution of our parents and of course our lay leadership; and Michael J. Haas Jerry D. Isaak-Shapiro most significantly, the talent and dedication of an unbelievable staff and faculty – these are the reasons Agnon is Agnon. With great appreciation, Michael J. HaasJerry D. Isaak-Shapiro President, Board of Trustees Head of School At the archaeological dig, we entered a series of caves that were excavated seven years ago and are expected to be over 2,300 years old. Inside, we found pieces of pottery and animal bones. At the end of the experience, we entered a cave that had just started to be excavated. We were able to see dove breeding nests chiseled into walls and grain silos. Overall, it was one of the most interesting parts of the trip, as we were actually able to help uncover the history of our ancestors." ~ KYLE FLATOW on 8th Grade Trip to Israel 3 3 STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS RAVSAK-SPONSORED HEBREW POETRY CONTEST: Seventh graders Sophie Greff and Noa Marcus were Hebrew poetry winners in a national contest sponsored by the Jewish Community Day School Network. DEPARTMENT HEADS RETIRE After many years as a member of Agnon’s Educational Leadership Team and as the Director of our Early Childhood Department, Cathy Schreiber will be moving on to be the Director of Education at the Cleveland Children’s Museum. Terry Pollack, who taught Social Studies in the Middle School and who also served as Agnon’s Middle School Coordinator, will be retiring from Agnon and from Shaker Heights High School. Cathy and Terry took on enormously important roles in developing Agnon into the school it is today; they leave with our appreciation and with the respect of their colleagues, students and parents. 6 Agnon Matters | www.agnon.org 216.464.4055 NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL DIRECTOR Agnon named Kim Favor as its new Middle School Director for the 2014-2015 school year. Kim has worked at the school for four years and is currently Agnon's Language Arts Department Chair and a Middle School Language Arts teacher. STAFF MILESTONES Shelly Portnoy and Kelli Pastor Malka Weil, Marcy Scolnick and Sue Pearlman Ronit Roth and Ellen Joseph Ines Ades Toni Scalabrino Michele Sudow Barbara Weiss YEARS OF SERVICE 10 15 20 25 26 33 37 AGNON'S ANNUAL AUCTION RAISES RECORD AMOUNT VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION Agnon honored all of its parent and grandparent volunteers at a special Kabbalat Shabbat assembly sponsored by The Marcus Family Fund. We want to thank everyone who gives their time and energy to The Agnon School. During the Annual Meeting, Agnon's Gloria Abrams Parent Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Kathy Solganik (top middle photo), mother of three Agnon students. Kathy has been a PTA Room Parent, Scholastic Book Fair Co-Chair and has facilitated an Appreciative Inquiry process to invigorate Agnon's Parent Association. She serves as an Agnon Parent Ambassador and is a member of the Recruitment and Retention Committee. Agnon's Grandparent Volunteer of the Year award went to Susan Shapiro (top right photo). A grandmother of two Agnon Early Childhood students, she regularly helps out at the school - baking with the children, creating art projects and reading stories. When volunteering at Agnon, she embraces each student and has become known as "everybody's grandma." AGNON FIRSTS NEW GREENHOUSE Agnon dedicated "Grandma and Poppy's Greenhouse" funded by a generous gift from Wendy and Bill Sattin and family. The parents of three Agnon alumni, the Sattins wanted to create a fitting tribute to celebrate the lives of Arlene and Michael Albin, Wendy's parents. The greenhouse augments our science programs and includes an aquaponics system. WORLD READ ALOUD DAY Agnon participated in "World Read Aloud Day" to celebrate reading and the power of words. Teachers engaged in reading activities, older students read to younger students and teachers shared a story with students. THE WORLD OF RESTAURANTS Agnon 3rd graders explored the many facets of successfully starting and operating a restaurant utilizing Project Based Learning (PBL). The students learned about everything from menu planning and marketing to personnel issues, using math, language arts, nutrition and technology skills. The project culminated at the school's "Celebration of Learning" where one classroom was transformed into a kitchen and another into an elegant restaurant. AGNON TRIBES Agnon created 12 tribes within the school to enhance school spirit, encourage teamwork and broaden camaraderie. Each tribe is comprised of Kindergarten - 8th grade students and staff members. AUDITORIUM RENOVATIONS Agnon recently completed a $350,000 renovation project to enhance the school's 25-year-old auditorium. Financial support for this major renovation came from donors who attended Agnon's 2013 Annual Benefit Auction and contributed to the event's "Fund-A-Need" campaign. Lead gifts from Fran Gordon and the FGI Foundation as well as an anonymous donor were instrumental in enabling the renovation to take place. NEW WEBSITE Agnon launched its new website with an updated look and new features. DEVELOPMENT MILESTONES 100 HOLES OF GOLF MARATHON RAISES RECORD $35,000+ FOR AGNON Eleven golf enthusiasts participated in Agnon’s second annual “100 Holes of Golf” challenge to raise funds for the school, completing 1,005 holes. Golfers included two Agnon 8th grade students, an Agnon graduate, Agnon alumni parents, an Agnon grandparent and community supporters. Together, the golfers raised more than $35,000 for the school from 300+ donors and sponsors. Agnon received $10,000 in matching funds from the AVI CHI Foundation. One-third of the proceeds from this golf outing will benefit Agnon’s Annual Operating Fund and two-thirds will benefit the Barry Levin Endowment Fund. Collectively, they help fund program enhancements and tuition assistance for those who could otherwise not afford an Agnon education. Agnon raised a record amount of nearly $606,000 at its 25th Annual Spring Benefit Auction, "Dream Big for Agnon," including $475,000 for a gym expansion project. The balance of the proceeds will be used for programming, operating needs and tuition assistance. Both corporate sponsorships and bidding increased. To ensure the success of Agnon's Benefit Auction, numerous volunteers worked tirelessly for months. The event was chaired by Kelli Gellis, Eliana LeVine, Lisa Mayers, Robin McCann, Meg Ratner and Ali Tannenbaum. Agnon’s 2014 Spring Benefit ~ Dream Big ~ was a tremendous success, raising more than $600,000, including $475,000 toward building a new gym. The total renovation, projected at $1.2 million, will enable the quality of the physical education program to match the quality of academics. The $475,000 is a stepping stone for the $1.2 million needed for the total renovation. This exciting endeavor provides for: • Locker rooms to change for after school athletics • Bleacher seating • A full-size Middle School basketball court with an appropriate floor • Technology for physical education instruction • Expanded space for Early Childhood large muscle development • Building security during after-school sporting events • A direct connection between the Middle School and Lower School wings The new gym will provide an expanded space for Agnon programming as well as providing a more appropriate venue for intramural sports. The renovation is about much more than bricks and mortar. The benefits of a robust physical education program – creating healthy lifestyle choices, improved personal fitness, sportsmanship and leadership as well as personal and communal pride – cannot be underestimated. This year, we inducted the first set of members into our newly created Legacy Society. The Society recognizes both current donors to Agnon's Endowment Fund and those who have remembered the school through a confirmed deferred legacy gift. These gifts can be used to honor or memorialize family members and ensure that donors will provide opportunities for future generations. All members who make an Endowment gift of $10,000 or more are added to the new Donor Wall at the school’s entrance. The Wall features hand-crafted glass panels created by an Israeli artist. In addition, our Legacy Society members were inducted into a National Honor Roll Society. The Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education's (PEJE) L'Dor V'Dor society recognizes generous donors across North America who have invested to secure the future of Jewish day schools through endowment and legacy gifts. Whether large or small, real-time or deferred, every gift counts and is greatly appreciated. Just as past bequests and other gifts have helped to create the Agnon of today, your gift can ensure that the tradition of general and Judaic academic excellence continues for the Agnon of tomorrow. ABE AND IDELLE WOLF ('09 ALUM PARENTS) ENDOWMENT AND LEGACY GIVING "The decision to participate in the Agnon Legacy Campaign was an obvious choice for us. Our son, Adam, started Agnon in the three-year old program and graduated in 2009. From the start, Agnon provided a nurturing environment that shaped his secular education and formed his Jewish identity. Our participation in the Agnon community did not end with Adam's graduation. The Legacy Campaign establishes our ongoing commitment to an institution that has contributed to the legacy of our family. This endowment for the Head of School Discretionary Fund will provide our current and future Heads of School the freedom to pursue goals not funded in budgeted operating expenses, including special professional development opportunities for teachers and program scholarships for students. Agnon continues to have a special place in our hearts and it is truly an honor and a privilege to add our names to this very important group. " Make a bequest by including the school in your long term plans. Simply name Agnon as a beneficiary in your will or living trust, or include Agnon as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy. Your gift can provide the resources needed to support extraordinary opportunities that shape the future of our Jewish youth. If you have already included the school in your plans, let us know. Your commitment qualifies you for membership in THE AGNON LEGACY SOCIETY. IF YOU HAVE INCLUDED AGNON AS PART OF YOUR ESTATE PLAN, OR IF YOU WOULD LIKE INFORMATION ON WAYS TO DO SO, PLEASE CONTACT OUR DIRECTOR OF ENDOWMENT: Karil Bialostosky 216.464.4055, ext. 114 or [email protected] The Value of Learning and the Learning of Values 17 ALUMNI NOTES SUZANNE BERMAN (’13) entered the National 2014 RAVSAK Judaic Art Contest and was a RAVSAK Staff Pick in the category of "Simply Loved and Wanted to Appreciate."
