Developments in technology and its impact on the increased use of
healthcare equipment has led many hospitals to create hybrid operating
rooms. The availability of these allows multiple procedures to be completed
without the need to move a patient to a new surgical area.
Hybrid suites are being developed to promote efficiency, decrease patient
risk, and provide a cost effective solution. These operating rooms allow
doctors across different specialities to access the equipment they need
within a central location. This lowers the risk of infection to patients as well
as increasing efficiencies generally.
Hybrids need to be larger than traditional operating rooms due to their wider
role, housing more, and often heavier, equipment. There is also increased
foot and wheeled traffic, with less down-time. This makes maintaining a
hygienic environment challenging while at the same time increasing the
importance of doing so.

Ensuring a hygienic
environment
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), hundreds of millions
of patients are affected by healthcare-associated infections globally, with
seven percent of patients in developed countries acquiring at least one.
In high-income countries, approximately 30% of patients in intensive care
units are affected by at least one healthcare-associated infection. This
results in risk to the patient, increased hospital stays and financial losses
for health systems. While a high proportion of healthcare-associated
infections are attributed to the use of invasive devices, high-risk and
sophisticated procedures and the insufficient application of standard and
isolation precautions are also cited.*
Hand hygiene is key in reducing the risk of infections such as meticillinresistant staphylococcus aureusis (MRSA); therefore the environment
that patients and staff come into contact with must be hygienic. The
constant movement of patients means that hospitals are a potential
breeding ground for bacteria, which is evolving to become more resilient to
antibiotics, increasing the need for wall cladding that is hygienic and easy
to clean. Altro Whiterock has been tested in accordance with ISO 22196,
which shows that MRSA will not survive on its surface.
The American Institute of Architects recommends that floor and wall
finishes should be free of fissures, open joints or crevices that may
retain or permit the passage of dirt and particles. These areas can retain
moisture and provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria are roughly
80-90% water and require moisture to obtain nutrients and grow. Installing
Altro Whiterock, an impervious, fully bonded wall cladding, ensures that
minimal moisture is present.
UK National Health Service (NHS) standards state that while antimicrobialimpregnated products (such as surface coatings, paints and curtains) and
antimicrobial materials are available, there are, at present, no definitive
data to support their efficacy in reducing healthcare-associated infection.
Altro Whiterock’s internal and external angles are thermoformed on site,
avoiding the need for unsightly corner trims which are potential dirt traps
and difficult to clean. Thermoformed corners and angles provide a much
more hygienic surface than the grouted joints associated with tiles, which
require an aggressive cleaning regime. Thermoformed corners maintain
the same level of impact resistance as the standard product, which is
particularly important as corners tend to receive most knocks.
We have designed a fully integrated system to make cleaning and
maintenance easier for you. Together Altro safety flooring and Altro Whiterock
create a watertight and fully sealed environment giving bacteria nowhere
to hide. As the system is fully integrated, it fits together perfectly to provide
a hygienic, watertight solution. No gaps or rough edges, just a smooth,
uninterrupted surface – even around plug sockets, light switches and corners.

Technical expertise
It’s in the detailing
Get into the groove…
A hygienic wall or floor on its own is not enough; the transition between the
two must also be sanitary to create a hygienic envelope from floor to ceiling.
Transitions must also be watertight and seamless. A very sanitary way to join
materials is to use a heat weld.
The process of heat welding presses the molten weld rod (usually
made out of plastic) into the grooves of the material fusing the material
together. This creates a water tight joint and prevents moisture ingress.
To create an impervious environment, we recommend you cove the
flooring to join with the wall covering and heat weld the transition
between the two. By creating a seamless, watertight environment
from the floor to the ceiling, you can help minimise the areas in which
bacteria will grow and where moisture can get trapped and cause
damage to the substrate.
Transition with other floor surfaces
For locations where sheet vinyl flooring must be finished to another floor

Jointing
Joints and junctions are a key part of system integrity.
There are two really popular ways of creating junctions between your
wall cladding and flooring. One is the overlap method, where the wall
cladding overlaps the flooring and the junction is sealed with mastic.
The other is the transition strip method.
When you install wall cladding, smooth, secure joints make cleaning
easier and help stop dirt, moisture, bacteria or vermin from settling.
Altro Whiterock hygienic wall cladding can be secured using one of four
different types of joint:
1.Welded: the most hygienic joint, it’s flush to the surface, and the
only one suitable for clean rooms and operating theatres. It’s also
suitable for general hospital use and kitchens.
2.Single-part: used for safety reasons, it’s ideal for secure units
as it can’t be pulled off.
3.Two-part: the quickest and easiest joint to fit, it’s aesthetically
pleasing and forgiving on an uneven surface.
4.Altro Whiterock FlexiJoint: a slim, aesthetically-pleasing
joint unique to Altro and available in pre-cut lengths.

Both sets of tests prove Altro Easyclean Maxis PUR shows
greater resistance to mild and dilute acids, alkalis, soaps
and detergents with most stains being completely removed,
compared to non-PUR treated safety flooring.

Walls: Smooth cleanable impervious surfaces are recommended
in clinical areas. Design should ensure that surfaces are easily
accessed, will not be physically affected by detergents and
disinfectants, and will dry quickly. Additional protection to the
walls should be considered to guard against gouging/impacts
with bed heads and trolleys. Wall surfaces should be maintained
so that they are free from fissures and crevices.
The control and prevention of healthcare-associated infection
(HCAI) is a priority issue in terms of not only the safety and wellbeing of patients and staff, but also the resources consumed
by potentially avoidable infections. It is important that the
design of the building facilitates good infection prevention and
control practices, and has the quality and design of finishes and
fittings that enable thorough access, cleaning, disinfection and
maintenance to take place.
All finishes in healthcare facilities should be chosen with
cleaning in mind, especially where contamination with blood
or body fluid is a possibility (that is, smooth, non-porous and
water resistant). Early and sustained involvement of the infection
prevention and control (IPC) team is essential and will lead to
the minimisation of infection risks.

Flooring should be seamless and smooth, slip-resistant, easily
cleaned and appropriately wear-resistant.
Wood and flooring with unsealed joints are difficult to keep clean
and should be avoided.
In areas where frequent wet cleaning methods are employed
(for example, clinical areas and theatres), floors should be of a
material that is unaffected by the agents likely to be used.
Floors that are particularly subject to traffic when wet (bathrooms,
kitchens) should have a slip-resistant surface, but be easily cleaned.
