BEST PRACTICES
FOR HYDRAULIC FLUID
CLEANLINESS CONTROL
The working fluid is the single most important component of
any hydraulic system. It serves as a lubricant, heat transfer
medium, sealant and the most important of all a means of energy
transfer. Use of a clean and high quality fluid is an essential
prerequisite for achieving efficient operation of the hydraulic
system. Oil contamination is a major source of component wear
and equipment failure. Therefore, it is important that only
clean fluids are used in the equipment operation. Cleanlinesscontrol centers ensure that the hydraulic fluid is stored safely
and is transferred in a contamination-free environment. The
seven best practices for cleanliness control are presented
below to avoid such contamination from occurring.
Correct Hydraulic Fluid Identification
To ensure that the right fluid is added to a piece of equipment,
a labeling system is needed. This is driven by the fact that
in large plants multiple types of fluids are used. Hydraulic
fluids are complex chemical compositions and are often very
incompatible, so to avoid errors of mixing fluids, which may
subject to contamination a good correct labeling system is
necessary.
in the reservoir, in the return line, in the pressure line, or in any other
location in the system where the designer of the system decides they
are needed to safeguard the system against impurities. The right filter
choice may ensure the fluid cleanliness control is maintained throughout
the operational period. Online and offline filtering systems are used to
clean up the oil, while breathers or air conditioners are utilized to protect
the fluid.
Implement Oil Analysis
Analyzing the oil in an application is an important part of a lubrication
strategy. By measuring against ISO 4406 standards, the oil can be kept at
the right cleanliness levels. Additionally, chemical analysis of the oil will
determine if it is fit for further use.
Apply Cradle to Grave Concept
From the stage of make-up fluid to disposal of hydraulic fluid, cleanliness
control should be applied and implemented in accordance to code of
practice. If spills occur the fluid can contaminate the environment. Right
and correct procedures of handling hydraulic fluid from the early stage
until to waste oil produced should be adhered strictly to prevent from
contaminant ingress and for dirty free fluid.
Use Fully Sealed and Contaminant Free Containers
Open and dirty containers can be a source of
contamination entering the machine. No exception
for dispensing containers and they must be safe, clean
and closed. It also should be efficient, easy to use and
adapted to the applications being filled. Make sure
the containers are well-sealed so no mistakes occur,
regardless of who uses them.
Fitting Air Breathers
Contaminants such as air, particles and water can get
into the containers easily if exposed to atmosphere
upon usage. Fluid degradation may result due to
contaminant ingress. Other problem arises are reduction in
hydraulic system reliability and incurs removal process of
the ingested contaminants. Hence it is important to fit air
breathers to all the containers.
Right Filter and Filtration System
The most

hydraulic systems to

and contaminations from

Practical and Efficient Lubricating Tool
Adding grease to a machine or hydraulic equipment accounts for the
majority of lubricating jobs. Therefore, it is essential to have tools that
are efficient and practical. Grease guns should be color-coded to ensure
that the right fluid gets in the right application. Color-coded grease guns
with different color for each type of grease can help in this regard.
Conclusion
Implementing best practices in cleanliness control of hydraulic fluid over
the long run is not an easy task. It requires the existing culture within a
plant to be changed so the processes are accepted, followed and sustained.
While cultures can be changed, to achieve this an understanding of the
causes of failure and how to prevent these factors from coming into play
during the implementation process are needed.

PELAKSANAAN 5S
Buletin MIMET Ahoy! Disember 2013
melaksanakannya. Pada mulanya UniKL MIMET telah
mendapatkan khidmat konsultan luar iaitu
AHA Dynamics Resources, yang pakar dalam 5S
untuk memberikan latihan dan khidmat nasihat
sebagai panduan agar aktiviti 5S ini kelak tidak
menjejaskan operasi institusi yang berteraskan
pendidikan. Berpandukan pengetahuan yang
diperolehi Jawatankuasa Induk QE/ 5S cuba
melaksanakannya.
arah menjayakannya. Polisi dan Objektif 5S
juga memandu arah pekerja ke arah satu
matlamat dan cita-cita seperti yang dihasratkan
oleh pengurusan. Sama seperti syarikat lain
yang ingin mengamalkan QE/5S, penglibatan
setiap pekerja menjadi satu cabaran utama
kepada Jawatankuasa QE/5S yang baru
dibentuk pada masa tersebut. Pelaksanaan
QE/5S pada peringkat awal sukar diterima
oleh sesetengah pekerja dan pelbagai rungutan
tiada masa untuk QE/5S biasa diberikan oleh
pekerja. Pada awal pelaksanaan dulu, Pihak
pengurusan menetapkan hari Jumaat adalah
Hari QE/5S di mana kerja gotong-royong untuk
aktiviti QE/5S dijalankan. Sekarang tidak lagi,
kerana QE/5S telah dilaksanakan dan hanya
perlu dikekalkan.

This orbital clamping unit (OCU) was used to
support and hold the pipe pieces tightly together
during the friction stir welding (FSW) process. FSW
is the solid state joining process which involves
mechanical contact (stirring process) to join either
plates or pipes without producing fumes and arc
while eliminating the requirement of shielding gas
and filler metal, thus saving weight and cost. As
FSW machine alone is very costly to acquire, and by
having this OCU will enable any research and higher
learning institution to run their available CNC milling
machine for FSW process to join pipe soundly (defect
free) at minimum expense. This is the first product
in Malaysia to enable FSW process for pipe joining,
especially for aluminium.

How to create a secure
PASSWORD??
Artikel
ILMIAH
Maziah Mohd Ali
(MMA)
Maritime Management
Department
In our daily business, we use passwords to access personal email,
login to the system (Ecitie) And Other Applications (Webmail,
E-Learning) and many more. Some people may consider password
as trivial and they take its importance for granted. One of the common problems
among the user is forgetting the password. To avoid this from happening, most users
will create a password that is similar with the things that they know like e-mail base,
date of birth, lover’s name, mother’s maiden name, father’s name, car make and many
others. Actually, in the eye of the hackers this may be one way for them to enter the
computer easily without using any software to hack though. There are some tips on
how to create an easy and secure password in future.
1.
DO NOT USE PERSONAL
INFORMATION:
Do not use personal information such as
date of birth, pet name, lover’s name and so
on. It is actually easier for others to guess
your password especially your best friend.
2.
DO NOT USE REAL WORDS:
Never use the correct words for example,
“password”. You can replace it as “paxword”
or “pappword”. This is because the hackers
will detect the real word you used by using a
special software.
3.
COMBINE MISCELLANEOUS
CHARACTER :
Use font, number or symbol to create your
password. A good password is combined
with various characters such
as “mo99$$is” or “Un1vers1t1”.
4.
USE SIMPLIFIED SENTENCE AS
WORDS:: You can also use this method. Take
WORDS
any verse that you like and then summarize

Buletin MIMET Ahoy! Disember 2013
To create a password that is safe and
easy to remember, follow these steps:
5.
USE PASSWORD MANAGEMENT
SOFWARE:
There is a simple software that can manage
your password. This software will help you
create the best password which is easily
retrievable. For example, the administrator
password. Try downloading from www.
download.com
6.
USE A DIFFERENT PASSWORD:
Use a different password to access any
different accounts. If someone knows your
password then the entire account will be at
risk from the carelessness.
7.
SWITCH YOUR PASSWORD:
Change your password every month or
regularly. This will make it difficult for others
to guess your password.
These are some methods that can be
practised by all of you in creating passwords.
It may seem trivial but if your password has
been compromised, then the risk of leakage
or thefts of information is extremely high.
Hopefully the above steps can be applied
not only for personal use but also for the
department itself.

st
Concentration refers to your
ability to direct your thinking
on the thing(s) you do at one
particular time.
ud
The art or practice of concentration,
no matter if studying biology or playing
pool,
is to focus on the task at hand and
eliminate distraction
We all have the ability to concentrate
-- sometimes. Think of the times when
you were “lost” in something you enjoy:
a sport, playing music, a good game, a
movie. Total concentration.

Your mind wanders from one thing to another
Your worries distract you
Outside distractions take you away

Before engaging in your studies, and concentrating,
try to center yourself with silence, clearing your mind
of distractions
that may disrupt your productivity.
Alternate reading with more active learning exercises
If you have a lot of reading, try the SQ3R method
Ask yourself how you could increase your activity level while
studying? Perhaps a group will be best? Creating study
questions?
Ask your teacher for alternative strategies for learning. The
more active your learning, the better.
What you can control in your studies:

•
Do something different from what you’ve been doing (e.g., walk
around if you’ve been sitting), and in a different area
What you can control in your studies
Best practices
“Here I study”
Get a dedicated space, chair, table, lighting and

•
•
Focus
Before you begin studying, take a few minutes
to summarize a few objectives, gather what
you will need, and think of a general strategy of
accomplishment
•
Incentives
Create an incentive if necessary for successfully
completing a task,
such as calling a friend, a food treat, a walk, etc.
For special projects such as term papers, design
projects, long book reviews, set up a special incentive

1986-1997 : At the age of 26, employed by Akademi Laut Malaysia as a Lecturer and rose to
the position of Head, Marine Engineering Department. Besides teaching, also responsible
for the conduct of all marine engineering courses, developing new courses and overall managing of the department.
During the years at the Academy, was introduced to the world of business and entrepreneurship by attending various
training programs, specialized courses, seminars and exhibitions organized by the government and private companies.
Inspired to achieve greater success as an entrepreneur, left the academy after establishing own private limited company.
1997-2008 : Became the Managing Director of own company, Pelorus Services (M) Sdn Bhd. at the age of 38. The company specializes in
providing services in machinery maintenance, repair and supply. Within a few years the company quickly extended its
services from the marine industry to other shore based industries such as Power Plants, Oil Refineries, Water Treatment
Plants and other process plants. The company has since then streamlined its activities to maintenance services for shore
based industries only.
2008-Now : With more time at hand, started teaching again on part-time basis as Associate Professor of University Kuala Lumpur

Exploring the world beyond our borders creates
unparalleled learning opportunities and outcomes.
Travel exposes the person to feel the different cultures,
languages and perspectives. Dedicating an autumn, a
semester or a month to studying abroad deepens the
benefit, forging lifelong skills.
Striving forward to MARA vision to produce global
technopreneurs, this opportunity to UniKL students really
gives them the enjoyment of this valuable experience
through many foreign destinations. We have SPPL-IPMA,
ISEM and Areas Erasmus Mundus which started in 2012.
Most students who study overseas describe their
time abroad as formative, changing their view of the
world, building their confidence and expanding their
independence. For some, it is the first time navigating
public transportation, speaking a foreign language and
eating unfamiliar cuisines. They can learn a lot just by
taking a train trip from one country to another. How do
I buy tickets if I don’t speak the language? Where can I
exchange the currency? What do I do if the youth hostel
is full? This is really a master class in problem solving.
Studying abroad brings tangible rewards as well. A 2012
study in the journal of Applied Cognitive Psychology
found that students who have lived and studied in
foreign countries develop higher creative thinking skills.
Developing advanced language skills, an expanded
worldview, and cultural sensitivity make job applicants
who have studied abroad more attractive to prospective
employers. Usually, the most popular destinations were
the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France and China being
chosen.
Students should target a destination and a program that
fits their academic and personal interests. For some that
may mean exploring the heritage and for others a country
with future international business opportunities may be
a better fit. Whatever the motivation, researching the
country and program is the critical first step towards a
positive and rewarding experience.
We live in an increasingly interconnected, global world.
Bringing diverse perspectives back to the unforeseen
opportunities by MARA helps students who have studied
abroad to be more marketable to future employers. I’ve
seen firsthand the problem-solving, creative thinking and
independence gained by our students. Begin your journey
and embrace the world of opportunities available to you!

PERKAPALAN
LAUT PENDEK
berbanding wilayah daratan kita. Apabila laut kita begitu luas, ia secara
langsung menjanjikan pelbagai prospek ekonomi seperti petroleum,
perikanan, pelabuhan, pengangkutan, perdagangan antarabangsa
dan lain-lain aktiviti yang mampu memakmurkan negara. Sebahagian

kapal-kapal jenis Ro-Ro (Rollon Roll-off) telah berjaya mengurangkan jarak perjalanan trak
Terdapat berbagai-bagai definisi Perkapalan Laut Pendek (SSS). Namun
Trade and Development (UNCTAD) dalam laporan tahunannya bertajuk
beberapa tahun lagi.
