Speeding along to
Germany’s Christmas
markets.
It’s no fairy story:
the best way to the next Christmas market is via the station. After all, these festive
events are usually located in the town centres and therefore near to the stations. Enjoy
the exciting contrast between state-of-the-art passenger transport and the atmosphere
of historic streets in festive splendour. Just as enticing as the Christmas markets are
Deutsche Bahn’s attractive ticket offers. For more information or to make a booking just
go to www.bahn.de and click on “Internat. Guests”. Deutsche Bahn. More mobility.

Be part of the magic
Yes, Germany really is magical at Christmas time.
It has over 2,500 Christmas markets with fairy lights
and romantic little huts where you can savour the
delectable aromas of roasted almonds and baked
apples. You might also be wondering what I’m going
to bring you. In my sack I have something for everyone. For grans and grandads, mums and dads – and
for the little ones, of course.
On the next few pages
I’ll introduce you to some
of the Christmas markets
in eastern,
western,
southern
and northern
Germany.
I’m sure you’ll find one you’d
like to visit.
I look forward to seeing you there.

When it comes to Christmas markets,
Germany offers no end of choice –
and its towns, cities and hotels have
put together a whole range of holiday
packages, especially for you. Ask your
travel agent about trips to Christmas
markets in Germany.

In western Germany, you’ll find fairytale figures at
every turn.

Enjoy Germany’s festive traditions
As well as Christmas markets, there
are lots of other exciting things
happening in Christmas wonderland.
Wonderful sights and fabulous music.
Wherever you go in Germany you will
see celebrations of age-old Advent
traditions. In northern coastal towns,
for example, I sail into the harbour and
greet people on the quayside.
Eastern Germany is the traditional home
of incense burners, candle arches and
Christmas pyramids. Here you will also
see miners’ bands parading through the
streets at Christmas time as they do at
other big festivals. In southern Germany
you’ll find intricately carved Nativity sets.
If you’re in Bavaria, be sure not to miss
the enchanting Nativity displays, while
the numerous Advent concerts by Alpine
bands, alphorn ensembles and choirs are
perfect for music lovers.
In western Germany meanwhile,
Christmas comes straight out of a
storybook. Along the Fairytale Route
there are Christmas fairs at castles,
festive concerts in stately homes and
trumpet fanfares from medieval towers.
So come and enjoy my Christmas
wonderland and all its lovely
traditions.
MY SPECIAL TIP FOR YOU:
COUNT THE DAYS TO CHRISTMAS
The Advent calendar has been around since 1851.
In those days families made their own, and people are still coming up with an endless variety
of different designs today. The printed version
has been around since 1902. Each day, from 1 to
24 December, you can open a window. Behind
it is a picture, a chocolate or some other surprise. In many towns and cities, the town hall
is transformed into a giant Advent calendar.
On each of the 24 days, a festively lit window
is opened to reveal a magnificent, decorative
picture painted by artists or school children.
In some places, entire buildings are lit up and
transformed into giant Advent calendars.

Weihnachtsmaerkte_2007_GB.qxd 06.06.2007 11:43 Uhr Seite 6
Make light work of Christmas shopping
Did you know that Germany’s first
Christmas market was recorded way
back in 1393? In those days Advent
markets only lasted a couple of days,
but things are different now, I’m happy to say.
6
If you’re looking for Christmas inspiration, nothing beats strolling round romantic booths at a Christmas market in a
fabulous setting. That’s just what millions of visitors do year after year. Take it
from me – you’ll be spoilt for choice.
You’ll find plenty of handcrafted Christmas decorations, made as they have
been for generations. Cute little incense
burners, wooden nutcrackers, Christmas
pyramids and Nativity scenes to place at
the heart of your Christmas display.
Right: what better way to celebrate Christmas
than with festive lights – the choice is endless
Weihnachtsmaerkte_2007_GB.qxd 06.06.2007 11:43 Uhr Seite 7
From the largest mall to the smallest stall – all beautifully
presented for your Christmas shopping pleasure.
If you’re still hunting for that special
Christmas gift, pop along to the shops
and stores with their festive decorations.
You’ll be amazed how much choice
there is.
MY SPECIAL TIP FOR YOU:
LAUSCHA
Lauscha is the birthplace of glass
Christmas tree decorations. At Christmas
time, its town centre is transformed into
a huge Christmas market with stalls, workshops and shops. Hand-crafted
baubles, pine cones and bells made
here are miniature works of art
and make great seasonal gifts. You
can even watch them being made.
Don’t forget the hand-painted, blown glass
baubles to adorn your Christmas tree. I’m particularly
fond of the brightly coloured, beautifully designed
wooden toys for children.

Go on… it’s Christmas!
I always put on a few
pounds at Christmas.
I just can’t seem to
resist all that great
Christmas food.
How about you?
Christmas markets in Germany always
have many wonderful things to eat. And
then there’s Christmas itself, with crispy
roasts and all sorts of sweets. We’ll come
to those in a moment. If I so much as
catch a whiff of roasted almonds, I just
like to have some. And I can easily
polish off a bag of freshly roasted chest-
nuts. So much for resisting temptation.
When I look around, you’re all the same.
You just can’t keep away from the treats
at those market stalls. Fine gingerbread
from Nuremberg, spicy Printen from
Aachen, crispy Christmas cookies, cinnamon stars and macaroons – and yes,
there’s a chill in the air, you’ve got to
Weihnachtsmaerkte_2007_GB.qxd 06.06.2007 11:44 Uhr Seite 9
Stall after stall of sweet treats and specialities.
Sweet or savoury – there is something to suit everyone’s tastes.
CHRISTMAS MULLED WINE (glühwein)
Ingredients
1 l dry red wine
1 untreated lemon
2 cinnamon sticks
3 cloves
3 tbsp sugar
Cardamom to taste
Preparation:
Warm the red wine and cut the lemon into
slices. Add the lemon and other ingredients
to the red wine and leave on the heat for
approx. 5 mins. Remove from the heat, cover
and leave to stand for 1 hour. Reheat and pass
through a sieve before serving.
have a spicy glühwein or a hot punch.
What more could you wish for? If you’ve
got an appetite, there’s soup, bratwurst
and plenty of other food to choose from.
Then there’s Christmas dinner itself. For
many people in Germany
that means crispy goose
served with dumplings and
red cabbage, followed by
baked apples prepared in a
variety of ways and – last
but not least – Christstollen.
What would a German Christmas
be without gingerbread?
You see, the temptations are there. Still –
you can cut down a bit when it’s all
over…

Like a fairytale – a Christmas forest in town
Simply spectacular – Hamburg at Christmas
The stunning Christmas forest in Goslar’s
UNESCO-listed old quarter is straight
out of a fairytale, with its illuminated fir
trees, soft forest floor, gentle music and
delicious aromas. Nearby, in the historical market square, is the Christmas market, with 70 stalls arranged in the shape
of a star. Every day, you’ll see musicians
performing other highlights around the
market.
Discover the historical, traditional and
hanseatic aspects of this fine city. Hamburg is renowned for its wonderful
Christmas markets, which are staged in
many of the city centre’s squares. Located
opposite the impressive town hall, the
prettiest of these was established by
Roncalli’s Circus. It has stalls laden with
confectionery, toys and crafts, and the
punch is even served by circus artistes!
Nostalgic carousels bring a gleam to everyone’s eyes, not just the children’s. A visit
to Hamburg in the weeks before Christmas is something you’ll never forget.
Emden’s Engelke Markt is on a giant
pontoon out in Ratsdelft harbour, and
the only way to reach it is via a pair of
bridges. Surrounding it is a fine array of
festively illuminated museum ships.
This extraordinary, floating Christmas
market is a real yuletide treat. The highlight is when the Dutch Sinterklaas
(Santa Claus) arrives by boat. Steeped
in maritime history, this East Frisian
port is ideal for finding delightful
handcrafted gifts and enjoying festive
food and drink.

The Hanseatic town of Lübeck with its
historic old quarter is northern Germany’s “Christmas capital”. It has three
Christmas markets with a vibrant, maritime atmosphere – the romantic historical Christmas market at the foot of the
Church of St. Mary, the craft market in
the vaults of the old Hospital of the Holy
Ghost (30 Nov – 10 Dec) and in St. Peter’s Church (28 Nov – 26 Dec). Another
amazing attraction is Ice World the international ice sculpture festival

CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN NORTHERN GERMANY
ROSTOCK
Schwerin’s market square in the old town
is the centre of the “Mäkelborg” Christmas market, which has a stage with
music, singing and dancing throughout
the day. By contrast, the Butchers’ Market
offers great-smelling Polish specialities
and a delightful festive programme. For
the first three weekends of the Christmas
market, towns twinned with Schwerin
are invited to present their country’s
products and seasonal folk traditions.
Father Christmas arrives in maritime style
Every year Rostock’s historical centre is
transformed by one of the largest and most
beautiful Christmas markets in northern
Germany. Where else does Father Christmas arrive by boat in the town harbour?
Amid the brick churches and town houses
of this port, there is a medieval Christmas market at St. Mary’s Church and a
popular fairytale stage at Neuer Markt
square. Fairground rides on the Fishermen’s Bastion are also heaps of fun.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN WESTERN GERMANY
AACHEN
BAD HERSFELD
BONN
Entrance to the market in front of the cathedral
Strolling in the glow of 30,000 lights
Bonn’s squares are bathed in a Christmas glow
Aachen’s brightly lit Christmas market is
set around the cathedral and the town
hall. This lovingly decorated “Christmas
village” on the market square has everything your heart could desire. One local
speciality you really must try is Aachen
Printe, a kind of gingerbread. Don’t miss
the music groups at the weekends and
the varied Christmas programme.
The “Christmas market of 100,000 lights”
is set on historical Linggplatz square in
the heart of the old quarter. It takes its
name from the number of bulbs used to
illuminate the beautiful medieval façades.
A 20 metre-tall Christmas tree illuminates
the exquisitely decorated wooden booths,
while choirs fill the air every day with
Christmas carols. 8 December is a special
day when the shops stay open until midnight. The whole town joins in the celebrations on 30 November.
The illuminated façades on Münsterplatz,
Bottlerplatz and Friedensplatz squares
and in adjoining pedestrian streets provide the evocative backdrop for the
Christmas market in “Beethoven’s city”.
If the scents of pine needles, glühwein,
chestnuts and gingerbread don’t get you
in the Christmas spirit, the festive events
on stage surely will. From 1 December
the historical town hall is transformed
into a giant advent calendar.

decorated timber-framed houses and is
where Christoph von Schmid wrote the
Christmas carol “Ihr Kinderlein kommet”.
St. George’s Minster has a wonderful
Nativity scene (60m2) and you can
browse for exquisite gifts at the unique
art bazaar.
During Advent, Christmas illuminations
bring Germany’s biggest market square
to life, to the delight of one and all.
Soak up the festive atmosphere as you
stroll around Freudenstadt’s Christmas
market and listen to the wonderfully
harmonic sounds of trumpet chorales
and Christmas choirs.
