Like other coastal gems, Willapa Bay and
the Long Beach Peninsula are well worth a

intellectuals, culinary enthusiasts, retirees,
lovers of life have all come here, turning
this area into a place nearly as culturally
stimulating as it is breathtakingly beautiful.

celebrated in October, as are ever-delectable
wild mushrooms.
The Peninsula’s seaside communities form a string of pearls, including
Oysterville–an entire community on the
National Register of Historic Places!–and
several unique small towns that welcome visitors. Museums and antique stores abound.
Throughout the year, the Peninsula
hosts a large number of festivals, including
the week-long International Kite Festival
when the skies are filled with colorful kites.
From the Doggie Olympic Games to a
series of musical events that pair seafood
with jazz & bluegrass, the annual calendar
is jam-packed with activities.
The Peninsula’s two lighthouses guard
the “Graveyard of the Pacific” and tours
of the North Head Lighthouse lead to
spectacular views of the waters where the
mighty Columbia River meets the turbulent Pacific Ocean.
Lewis and Clark made their mark
here more than two centuries ago. Several
of the 12 locations which comprise the
Lewis and Clark National Park are on
the Peninsula, including the fortifications of Fort Columbia and the Lewis
& Clark Interpretive Center at Cape
Disappointment State Park.

0.0 - Start of Highway 101
Hwy 101 from Astoria to the California
state line is part of our national scenic
heritage. Mile 0 is the southern end of the
Astoria–Megler Bridge. Over 4 miles long,
this bridge is the longest continuous threespan, through-truss bridge in the world.
Construction began in 1962 and was completed in 1966. This bridge completed Hwy
101 and made it an unbroken link between
the Canadian and Mexican borders. The city
of Astoria lies mostly upriver from milepost 0.

The written history of the area dates to
1792, when Robert Gray in his small ship,
Columbia Rediviva, entered and named the
river. Lewis and Clark’s expedition of 1804–
1806 established the new nation’s claim to
the Pacific Northwest. The oldest American
settlement west of the Rockies, Astoria offers
more points of historical interest than any
other city on the Oregon Coast. Intriguing
historical museums include Flavel House (not
wheelchair-accessible), Heritage Museum,
and Uppertown Firefighters Museum.
Tapiola Park is Astoria’s newest attraction, with miniature replicas of the area’s
greatest sites and a state-of-the-art skateboard facility.
A great view can be had from the Sixth
Street Viewing Platform along the Riverwalk
Trail. The visitor information center is on
West Marine Drive, about 1/2 mile east of
the Astoria–Megler Bridge.

For a glimpse of life during the Lewis and
Clark expedition, travel 3 miles east on Old
Hwy 101 to Fort Clatsop Road and follow
signs to Fort Clatsop, one of the major sites in
the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park.
This is where the expedition spent the winter
of 1805–1806. The reproduction of the original fort burned in 2005; a new even more
authentic fort has been constructed with the
help of many volunteers. Educational and living history continue year-round. Admission
charged (503-861-2471; nps.gov/Lewi).

hether curators or first-time collectors, generations of Northwest
travelers seeking a special work of art have found fulfillment in Cannon
Beach. Here the legendary wild beauty of the Oregon Coast combined with the
extraordinary landscape to attract the artists who began what is now recognized as
“One of America’s 100 Best Art Towns.”
A dozen independently owned galleries on Hemlock and Spruce streets display
works from leading Northwest artists, who range from “up and coming” to
well established, but in Cannon Beach, art doesn’t stop at the gallery door.
The city of Cannon Beach promotes an annual public sculpture program,
Sculpture Without Walls,
which places large sculptures in outdoor settings in Cannon Beach.
Art festivals mark the seasons.
Stormy Weather begins in November and Spring Unveiling takes place
on the first weekend in May. The Sandcastle Contest in June yields art
out of beach sand, while its annual poster is a work of art on its own.
The tufted puffin, the inspiration for the Georgia Gerber bronze on
this page, is the unofficial Cannon Beach mascot. Thousands of tufted
puffins make their summer home at Haystack Rock, a national wildlife
refuge and one of the most photographed sites in America.
Come to Cannon Beach for the art,
but don’t forget to enjoy its eclectic shopping, distinctive dining, indulgent
spas, theatre, hiking, biking, surfing, and much more.

The park offers dramatic views of the
coastline and Haystack Rock. In 1806,
Captain William Clark of the Lewis and
Clark expedition named a creek in this
area Ecola Creek, based on the Chinook
Indian word for whale, ekoli. The 1300acre park includes magnificent ocean
frontage extending from the northern edge
of Cannon Beach to Indian Beach. The
Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail,
also designated as a segment of the Oregon
Coast Trail, extends 8 miles from Cannon
Beach to Seaside and follows some of the
same route used by Captain Clark. The
park road extends 2 miles north of Cannon
Beach with access to many picnic areas,
viewpoints, and two beaches. Day-use fee.

Beach and Haystack Rock in the distance.
28.0 - Cannon Beach (ZIP 97110)
Extending 4 miles along a stunning
stretch of beach, Cannon Beach offers a
breathtaking view around every corner.
The town (named for a cannon that
washed up on the beach in 1846) has
worked hard to preserve its natural beauty.
The city doesn’t specify materials, but many
people use shingle siding, making the buildings compatible with the character and setting of the city. The retail area is an impressive collection of smart shops, all tastefully
landscaped and some with tranquil courtyards—no obtrusive big-box stores here.
The most popular annual event in
Cannon Beach is the Sandcastle Contest,
scheduled each year in June. The town
celebrates music and art during the Stormy
Weather Arts Festival, the first full weekend
of November. And Haystack Holidays has
many activities including wreath-making
and caroling.

National Wildlife Refuge and the unofficial
symbol of Cannon Beach, lies just south.

marine gardens are protected by the state.

ocated on the shores of Tillamook Bay, the largest bay on
the Oregon Coast, the quaint port town of Garibaldi is considered by many to be one of the best fishing destinations on the coast.
From the historic Port of Garibaldi – which celebrates its
Centennial in May of 2010 – you can enjoy fishing, crabbing, clamming and take advantage of an array of fishing charter services.
As a working port, there are excellent marina facilities, including
a large mooring basin with launching ramps, transit dockage and
services that rent boats and equipment.
Centrally located in the heart of Tillamook County, the color-
ful community of Garibaldi is both a tourist destination and home
to commercial fishing and a working hardwood mill. It is the
perfect staging point for trips to some of the most beautiful and
unspoiled scenery on the north coast.
From Garibaldi, you are a short drive from Tillamook’s five
main rivers, the lush mountains of the Tillamook State Forest, the
Tillamook Cheese Factory and Tillamook Air Museum and miles of
beautiful beaches. In and around Garibaldi, you will be served by
motels, RV parks, bed and breakfast inns and vacation rentals, as
well as pubs, restaurants and shops.
