Seeking a Better Life: The Tale of Refugees

The Beehive State is home
to more than 60,000 refugees who
come from all around the globe
seeking a sanctuary of peace.
Refugee numbers have
soared recently and the United
Nations has said we are living in
the worst immigration crisis since
World War ll. The United States
accepts 70,000 refugees a year.
The surplus of refugees
has come as a result of the wars,
religious intolerance, and bitter disputes that arise among countries.
Once the refugees arrive in
a foreign country, often the most
challenging thing they face is a
language barrier. It would be so
difficult to come to a land where
you cannot even understand the
people who are trying to help you.
Although they are not refugees, I spoke to a few students in
Shawn Fessler’s ESL class in order
to find out just how difficult it is
to learn another language that is so
different from your own.
Junior Edgar Zama said,
“You don’t know what anyone is
talking about,” and sophomore
David Gutierrez said, “You just say
yes to everything.” This is the reality for many refugees.
Despite the many trials that
refugees face, they are instilled
with a fire, a burning desire to rise.
Freddie Mercury, lead singer in the
band Queen, was a refugee from
the small African island of Zanzibar. He said, “If I lost everything
tomorrow, I’d claw my way back
to the top somehow.”
Luol Deng, star player for
the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat,
is also a refugee from the African
country of Sudan.
Other amazing individuals such as Albert Einstein, Henry
Kissinger, Madeleine Albright and
Gloria Estefan are refugees who
sought peace in the U.S.
Millions of people are currently displaced from their homes
for varying reasons. Whether it be
to escape political strife, religious
freedom, or to make a better home
for their family, all refugees have
one critical thing in common: they
are people. Mothers, fathers, sisters
and brothers. They are fleeing their
homes and jumping into the unknown so that they may live.
Amidst this refugee crisis
find out what you can do to help
these people who deserve to be
treated and respected as human beings, whether that is just by becoming informed, or volunteering at
the local refugee outreach center.
The Utah Refugee Services
is located in Salt Lake. You can donate time, money, or even just your
compassion and understanding.
Whatever contribution you make, it
will not go unnoticed by those that
are searching for a way to make
this foreign place home.

The Invisible Diseases

Mental Illnesses are disorders in the brain that affect your
mood, thinking and your daily behavior. There are a wide variety of
mental illnesses and they are more
common than most people think.
Twenty percent of teens
reported they had suffered from
some form of mental disorder that
became severe enough to impact
daily life, said psychcentral.com.
More specifically 11 percent were impaired by depression,
or bipolar disorder, ten percent
reported Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and eight
percent were impacted by at least
one form of anxiety disorder.
Forty percent of those who
were involved in the study met the
criteria for having more than one
disorder.
Anxiety disorders can begin
as early as six years of age, ADHD
at 11, mood disorders at age 13,
and substance usage disorders by
15. A lot of these disorders can
develop as life goes on, but some
can be hereditary.
One of the main issues
regarding diagnosing a mental
illness is being able to recognize
the symptoms. Some symptoms
include, but are not limited to: loss
of interest in activities, loss or gain
in appetite, withdrawal from family
and friends, aggressive behavior,
and poor school performance.
What should you do if you
or someone you know is experiencing signs of a mental illness? The
best thing to do is talk to a professional. Start with the primary care
physician or pediatrician and go
from there. Try not to get discouraged because help is out there.
Ogden Canyon Closures

In Utah, road construction
is common and Ogden will see its
fair share of orange cones in the
near future. Ogden Canyon will
soon be experiencing intermittent
closures as the Pineview Water
Systems replaces the water pipe
that hangs from the canyon walls.
The pipe is called a siphon and it is
suspended between the walls at the
mouth of the canyon and is used
for water and irrigation.
The siphon was first put
up in 1937 it has been bringing
irrigated water to customers for
80 years and now currently serves
10,000 people in the Ogden area.
The whole pipe will be replaced
because of the age of the recent
existing pipe.
Here is what you need to
know so you do not get caught in
a closure as you head up to shred
some sweet powder.
Construction began on
October 2 and is expected to continue through April 2016. There
are traveling routes made for going
through the canyon but traffic and
stops should be expected. If you
do get caught up in a traffic stop,
you can at least seek comfort in
the knowledge that each stop is not
expected to be any more than 15
minutes at a time.
We all know that closing a
canyon can be even more frustrating than closing a normal road as
the number of possible detours
(North Ogden Divide and Trapper’s Loop) take a lot longer.
Senior Megan Bindrup
said, “It is way irritating when
they close down the canyon. I have
family who lives in the canyon
and construction makes it harder
to visit them, especially around the
holidays.”
But, no matter how we feel
about it, it is here and happening so
you might as well prepare yourself.

The Stages of Grief and a Story of Loss

Grief is a multifaceted
response to personal loss. Some
people experience grief in different ways. Some go at a slower rate,
and some go at a faster one, it all
just depends on your personality.
The first stage of grieving is denial. Denial is more like a
shock and overwhelmed state that
some fall into. They can end up
finding the world meaningless. But
eventually it passes.
Then comes the second
stage: anger. Some become violent,
others hate everything, they may
snap at people, and say things they
don’t mean.
The third stage is bargaining. This stage is where people turn
to a higher power to try and fix the
loss by making promises to do better or be better as long as what was
lost will return.
The fourth stage, personally
I thinks is the worst stage of them
all, depression. Most people tend to
stay in this stage longer than others. They don’t want to do anything
or talk to anyone. They just want to
“opt out” as some would say.
The last step is acceptance.
This is when someone finally accepts that their loved one is gone
and is not coming back.
I recently lost someone that
I cared about. We were best friends
once, but we lost touch when our
parents weren’t talking.
And I passed through every
single step. The denial, anger and
bargaining were rather quick for
me and then I sank into the depression.
I still feel like I am stuck
there: in the worst stage of them
all. I don’t like this stage so I am
trying my absolute best to get out
of it and just accept that he is gone
and never coming back.
They say that talking about
it helps move the griever on to that
last step, so here I am: talking and
waiting for healing. If you are also
experiencing the stages of grief, I
promise, someone is out there who
understands and will listen.
Here at Bonneville we
have quite a few clubs. We would
like to highlight a couple of them.
So, a few amazing clubs that you
may or may not have known about
are: Key Club, Latinos in Action,
HOSA, and GSL.
Key Club is a club that is
out to help the community. They
do service projects every month.
This year, so far, the plan is to at
least do a blood drive (and spend
the money on kids at the Christmas
Box House).
They also plan to help
at the Children’s Justice Center,
get hands-on at the South Ogden
Animal Shelter, and do a concert
or dance at the local assisted living center for the elderly. Dues
are only $12! If you want to know
more contact Russell Porter in
room 303.
Latinos in Action is a new
club this year. This is a club that
focuses on helping and tutoring
students at the elementary school
with their reading comprehension.
On days they stay at Bonneville instead of heading to the
elementary schools, they focus on
prepping for college, careers, and
plan community service opportunities. For more information contact
Skylar Kendall in room 131.
HOSA stands for Health
Occupation Students of America.
They do service projects that
not only aid them in their career
choices, but help others who can’t
afford assistance or just enjoy their
company.
They learn about the health
field and what they can do to be
better at whatever they have their
hearts set on. They meet two Mondays out of every month. They also
compete in tons of categories but
only by choice. HOSA focuses on
becoming better leaders.

Gay Straight Alliance. The GSA
network was founded in 1998 to
fight homophobia and transphobia
in schools.
Its purpose is creating a
safe environment for anyone that
is an advocate for equal rights to
come together, safe and supported!

Thursday in Kylie George’s room.

There are so many youtubers it can be difficult to sift
through them, so let me tell you
about some of the best.
PewDiePie is a famous
youtube gamer that has been
on youtube since 2010. He has
40,196,451 subscribers and over
10 billion views. Along with
playing different video games and
recording himself he adds commentary with them and it makes
it even more hilarious.
Jenna Marbles is a comedian. Her videos consist of
anything from skits to rants.
Jenna has 15,594,106 subscribers and over 1 billion views. Her
personality is really what pulls
people into her videos, she has
an amazing sense of humor and
she’s honestly really good at what
she does.
Tyler Oakley is a popular
member of the Youtube community and also a big part of the
LGBT community. His video
content is basically a lot of him
talking about different topics
and having guest youtubers do
different challenges. Tyler has
7,719,961 subscribers and 500
billion views on his channel.
Anthony Quintal a.k.a Lohanthony is a 16 year old youtuber who started his channel when
he was 13 years old. Through
the years he has blown up on the
internet. His personality is very
contagious, he’s sassy, flamboyant and doesn’t care what people
think. Anthony has 1,534,473
subscribers on youtube and over
83 million views on his videos.

Save the Drama for your Mama (or your television...)

Crime television shows
have always been popular. They
keep you guessing, always on the
edge of your seat, and let us live
out childhood dreams of being
crime fighting heros without ever
having to put our lives on the line.
Whatever the reason, here
are a couple of the most popular
crime dramas, not in any particular
order...
1. Law and Order. This
actually entails several different
shows. There is the original Law
and Order and so that is the overall title of the show, but there are
different series that spun off of
the priginal and they are all just as
fabulous.
For example there is Law
and Order: Criminal Intent, which
follows the New York Police
Department’s major case squad
as they try to stop the New York’s
worst offenders. As you are watching you get to see the crimes as
they are planned and committed.
The show first aired in 2001, and
now has 195 episodes.
2. CSI. This stands for
Crime Scene Investigators and, just
like Law and Order, it has grown
to the point of several spinoffs that
cover different cities, but the original one takes place in Las Vegas
and was on the air for 15 years.
3. How to get Away with
Murder. It is a fairly new show. It
first aired in 2014 and has 19 episodes. It is more of an ongoing storyline. It is about a group of eager
law students, and their outstanding
criminal defense, get wrangled into
a murder plot that affects a lot of
them for the rest of their lives.
4. Criminal Minds. This
one is my personal favorite. It
takes place in Quantico, Virginia.
It is about the BAU or Behavioral
We’re “Over the Top” for Jake’s

If you haven’t heard of
Jake’s Over The Top then you are
definitely missing out. Jake’s is
an amazing restaurant with many
great products. They specialize in
milkshakes, but also serve burgers,
fries, chicken fingers, sundaes, etc.
There is one located in
South Ogden, on Harrison Boulevard by the Pie Pizzeria. They have
a variety of different milkshakes
and Avalanches that are to die for.
I have loved Jakes Over
The Top since my first visit in
2006. My family has been going there ever since. My personal
favorite is the bacon cheeseburger
with fries and an Oreo mint shake.
Everybody that I have
asked that have been to Jake’s
Over The Top said that they like it
very much and go frequently which
makes sense since they have such
delicious food for a great price.
Sophomore Dylan Way-
ment said, “I haven’t been to Jake’s
many times in my life, but the
times that I have gone it was delicious. I love hamburgers and fries.
I once went with Parker Young to
Jake’s to get a shake when he was
injured and it was the best shake
I’ve ever had. I highly recommend
going there and trying some of
their food.”
Sophomore Boston Dumas
said, “Jake’s is so good. I go there
Analysis Unit, which is a subdivision of the FBI. In each episode
the BAU gets called in by police
departments around the US.
The BAU use profiling
which is a scientific art that brings
them closer to finding their unsub (unidentified suspect). This
show doesn’t necessarily need to
be watched in order, but you will
understand it lot more if you do.
Criminal Minds first aired in 2005
and has 236 episodes
5. NCIS, is about Special agents in the Naval Criminal
Investigative service. In the show
the agents conduct criminal investigations that involve the Navy and
Marine Corps. It first aired in 2003
and has 286 episodes.
Crime TV shows are honestly so interesting and keep people
occupied like any show that you
binge watch. They keep you guessing and always have a twist.
all the time and I am satisfied every
time. My mom picks up shakes
there all the time for me and my
siblings and we all love them. I
think that everybody should go to
Jake’s because you will be satisfied, I guarantee you. I haven’t
had one thing to eat there yet that I
wasn’t satisfied with.”
Jake’s Over The Top is a
great restaurant and everybody I
asked loves it. If you haven’t tried
it yet, head on over today, you
won’t regret it.

Will the Odds be in Your Favor?

Prepare yourselves; Mockingjay Part 2 is out. The last installment in the Hunger Games trilogy
has kept us waiting in completely
childish anticipation for a year.
I realize not everyone is yet
a part of the world of Panem, so
here is a brief synopsis.
The story features Katniss Everdeen, a young, bold, and
maybe even a little lost teenage
girl who is living in the futuristic
dystopian country of Panem.
The country is corrupt and
riddled with poverty; the rich live
well but those in the lower individual “districts” live a life of constant
insufficiency. When Katniss finds
herself participating in the annual
Hunger Games, a competition
where children from every district
One Direction
Headed for a
Break

Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan
are One Direction. They are the
biggest boyband at the moment,
and have been for five years.
On March 2015, when
Zayn Malik decided to leave the
band because he was tired of fame
and just wanted a normal life,
chaos invaded the fandom, leaving
millions of fans heartbroken.
Even though Malik leaving
had a big psychological impact on
the four boys, they stayed together,
fighting to keep all the fandom
united.
However, during one of
their recent interviews in August,
Payne said, “I think everyone
needs a little bit of a break now,
and a sit down and a stop, to kind
of take in all the great things
are put in an arena and forced to
fight to the death to produce one
lone survivor, her world is thrown
upside down.
As the story evolves, Katniss ends up winning the Hunger
Games, kindling a relationship
with a miraculous boy who bakes
bread, and also becoming the head
of the rebellion to overthrow the
crooked Capital. Enthralled? So are
we.
The movie will be debuting
on November 20th, so start getting
excited! Sophomore Gabby Anaya
said she was excited to see how
they created the elaborate creatures
from the book, and also how they
portray the inevitable deaths of
some of the most beloved characters.
Junior Tawny Busboom
said, “I cannot wait to see it--it’s
that’ve happened” and that the
boys would take a break soon.
The fans have been devastated by this news, but the boys
promised they’re not going anywhere, just on a small break.
Some people say it’s because things have been looking
bad behind the scenes between the
boys, others, like Cowell, say that
they’re just “overly tired” due to all
their efforts in albums and tours.
Whatever the reason is,
it doesn’t necessarily mean that
the boys are splitting up, just that
they’re taking a break for maybe
a year, starting in March of 2016,
after they release their new album
“Made in the A.M.”, which includes the success singles “Drag
Me Down” and “Perfect”.
Seniors Gabby Shupe and
Carissa Gomez said, respectively
that “They have really good music, and I hope they will be able to
come back” and that “They have
been working really hard, and they
deserve that break.”
In the meantime, we’ll just cross
our fingers for them to not split up
and come back soon!

The book was hard enough
to read and it is going to be even
harder to watch, but it will also be
amazing. We can celebrate Katniss,
Peeta, Gale, Finnick, Joanna, and
sweet Prim. We can celebrate them
all and the sad and tragic world
they tried to heal that we loved to
live in.

Dew Tour

The Dew Tour is a great
skiing event that is held at various ski resorts during the winter months. It is sponsored by
Mountain Dew. It is a competition
between different skiers and snowboarders.
There are many different
events such as the half pipe and
the big park that are held at the
Dew Tour. The Dew Tour will be
held in Breckenridge, Colorado on
December 10th through the 13th
2015. The Dew Tour competitions
are completely free, no tickets are
required.
Last year the winner of the
men’s super-pipe was Taylor Gold
with a score of 90.50. The winner
of the men’s free ski slopestyle
was Gus Kenworthy with a score
of 88.75. Kenworthy also took the
silver in the same event in the 2014
Sochi Olympics.
The best thing about the
Dew Tour is that you can usually
find a free Mountain Dew bar.
The Dew Tour often
switches locations and has been at
Snowbasin, Utah for a few years,
but will not be come to Utah this
year. The last time the Dew Tour
took place at Snowbasin was in
2012.
During the Dew Tour there
are a bunch of different events such
as concerts and raffles. To acquire

Jaxon Dumas, a senior said
“I have gone to three dew tours
and loved everyone, it was a great
experience to be able to win some
free stuff and meet famous skiers
and snowboarders”.
Shawn Camp a junior said
“I have been every year and I
LOVE it; it is so awesome to get
free stuff and just watch all the skiers and snowboarders”.
Tanner Heaton, a senior
at Bonneville High said “I love
going because I get to drink all the
Mountain Dew I want and they
have so many different flavors.”
Dew Tour is way fun and
you should go check it out. I hope

Man Buns:
a Do or a
Don’t?

There are many different opinions on man buns. With
the common trend of men now
having longer hair, man buns are
becoming the new look. Even if
the guy’s hair isn’t long enough,
some still try to pull it off.
The battle lines have
been drawn about whether this
is a manly trend that gives a nod
to caveman days or a disgusting
trend that will hopefully fade
soon as men everywhere remember proper grooming.
I, personally, think
they’re cool because they are a
mix of masculinity and confidence, but what does the rest of
Bonneville think?
Olivia Smith, a junior,
said that it “depends on the guy
and the hair length. Longer hair
is definitely better. If it’s short
it just looks like a little mushroom.”
Junior Wyatt Holden
said “I wish I had one,” but
junior Quinn Vandehei said
“gross”. Opinions between girls
and guys vary. Jenna Eidemiller,
a senior, proved Olivia Smith’s
claim to be true by stating that
“If Carson Junk had one, they’d
be real Gucci!” So I guess it really does depend on the guy.
Chris Hemsworth wears
his man bun well. It even inspired J.T. Wood, a senior, to get
his own man bun. “They’re dope.
They make me look like Thor,”
said Wood. Lots of celebrities
rock the bun including; Harry
Styles, Bradley Cooper, and
Leonardo Di Caprio.
I personally think that
man buns are very attractive if
they are done correctly. It’s just
a fact of life; some people pull
things off better than others!
Do Your Eyebrows
Have Game?

The term “eyebrow goals”
started in 2015 and it is the filling
in of your eyebrows darker than
they naturally are.
Honestly, in my opinion
I think eyebrows shouldn’t be
played with or filled in unless you
are a pro. Some girls know how
to fill them in to make them look
natural, but on the other hand some
girls look like they took a Crayola
brown marker and colored all over
their foreheads.
Some people even take this
eyebrow thing to the next level and
get them tattooed on. There are
pros and cons to this new trend.
Some cons of getting eyebrows tattooed on is when you get
older they can start to fade and also
they can start to lose shape.
Pros of getting them tattooed are: you can just wake up, do
they rest of your makeup and go,
even if you do not even want to do
your make up, your eyebrows are
already done.
Te’anna Johnson, a junior
said, “In my honest opinion I think
eyebrows shouldn’t be filled in
especially when a lot of girls do
not know how to fill them in. Also,
eyebrows shape your face so if you
try to make a really arched eyebrow your face could look really
square or oval looking.
Callie Holmgren, a sophomore, said, “I think some people
should fill in their eyebrows. People with red and blonde hair should
not because brown or black doesn’t
really go with red or blonde hair
and most people want their eyebrows to look natural.”
So I guess this whole issue
can go either way. Some people
should fill in their eyebrows to
add more depth to your face, but
if you are not 100% confident in
your ability to do this naturally it
is probably best to avoid it for now
until you have more practice.
Minimum
Wage: The
Struggle is Real

Minimum wage differs
among different states in the U.S.
In Utah, minimum wage is $7.25.
Minimum wage is defined as being the minimum hourly wage an
employer can pay an employee for
work.
Most people that earn
minimum wage are young and just
working for extra money to pay for
gas, food and even housing.
In some states, the minimum wage is higher than others.
For example, in California the
minimum wage is $9.00 because
the state is more expensive to live
in, and they figure that the minimum wage should be higher to be
able to afford living expenses.
Junior Deisy Rodriguez
said, “I went to New York and
their minimum wage is $8.25.”
Utah isn’t too expensive to live in,
therefore minimum wage is less
here than compared to New York

or other states.
The minimum wage in Utah
isn’t very much liked by many people. Junior Calista Wheeler said,
“I don’t like the fact that minimum
wage is $7.25 because when I get
a job, I want to make more than
that.”
President Obama wants to
raise all of minimum wage rates to
$10.10 because he believes it will
help bring people above the poverty line.
Some people believe that
minimum wage should be higher
when you are a teenager or early
twenties because that is when life
starts to hit reality and people want
to get on their feet.
It is hard to only be making
$7.25 and trying to rent an apartment or afford food.
For most seniors, this is
going to happen sooner rather than
later. Who wouldn’t want to make
more than $7.25, especially when
you are trying to afford schooling
and only have a part time job? Senior Claire Mortenson said, “I hope
minimum wage goes up before I
am graduated.”
Sophomores and juniors
might not have to worry about this
problem as much as seniors do, but
it will happen to all students.
So, continue through high
school, Lakers, and move on to
college because it might be okay
making minimum wage now, but it
is a struggle as you grow up.

Whatever happened to holding boom
boxes on our shoulders playing our loved
one’s favorite song, throwing pebbles at a
girl’s window in the middle of the night to
declare your love, holding open doors and
pulling out chairs for your wife, or even writing poetry or songs about your loved one and
reciting it to him/her?
Times have changed and technology
has taken over, but here are some old-school
things that were done to show someone you
cared about them. Because, let’s face it, romance was better back then.
One thing that was done to be romantic is the boys would bring the girls that they
liked flowers (mostly roses) to show their
affections. Instead of text messages or emails
they would write letters and put them somewhere clever or send it to them to tell the other
person how much they cared about them.
My grandma Isabel Ballard said, “In
my time of romancing, the girls would wait
to be asked on a date because a girl asking
was forbidden. The boys would have to come
inside and meet the girl’s parents sometimes
even having to ask them if it was okay to take
their daughters out on a date. The girls in my
time weren’t as forward as they are today, and
back then the boys would pay for all dates.”
Romance has changed a lot over the
years from poetry, books, in person, and even
in music. A lot of those forms of media are
now about hooking up where as back in the
70’s and 80’s, they were about actual romance.
Examples of this would include Elvis
Presley and his song “It’s Now or Never.”
Presley sings this powerful lyric, “When I first
saw you with your smile so tender, my heart
was captured, my soul surrendered.” Presley
also has a song named “The Wonder of You”,
where he sings the lyric “And when you smile
the world is brighter, you touch my hand and
I’m a king. Your kiss to me is worth a fortune,
your love for me is everything.” Both are good
examples of true romance.
Compare the lyrics from the old romance songs to the new ones you hear today,
and it’s obvious that the old ones are more
unique and overall send a better message.
This is why I believe that romance
should go back to being the way it used to be.
Relationships have changed a lot from
how they used to be, even from up to just
a few years ago. In the 80’s for an example
people actually walked up to girls and asked
them on a date. Now-a-days most guys just do
it over the phone.
Now, we have cell phones and social
media, you don’t even have to meet a person to have a boyfriend/girlfriend. If you are
looking through Twitter or Instagram and see
someone you think you’d like to one day meet
and date them, you can go to their profile and
direct message (DM) them. It’s super easy and
takes zero self-confidence because there is no
risk involved. Which is exactly why it is so
much better.
Years ago you had to walk up to someone not knowing them and have the courage
to ask someone on a date, that’s hard! Getting
rejected can be a huge fear for boys and it’s
harder to take no for an answer when a girl
practically says: “You aren’t good enough.”
Now getting rejected on the phone isn’t nearly
as bad because you can delete the embarrassing message and look for a new person. No
tears for them to see, no blushing face for the
whole world to witness, nothing. It is fabulous.
When you wanted to call your girlfriend/boyfriend years ago you used a home
phone, or rotor phone, and any family member
could pick up another phone and listen to the
conversation. That’s super embarrassing and
there wasn’t any privacy. Drew Patterson, a
sophomore said, “It’s nice now because you
can get a hold of your date” without having to
have a five minute chit chat session with her
brother.
On an actual date now you can pick
the girl up, and take her on the date just like
how it used to be. People complain that dating
now is awful because the boys are disrespectful or the girl is boring, this has nothing to
do with the time change that is because of
how they are raised. Some boys were raised
to have class and be respectful on a date and
others were never taught, it has nothing to
do with the era. Gabby Shupe, a senior, said,
“Relationships are chiller now and that’s really nice.” Trust me guys, every girl wants an

Wonderland

Tis the season to make
your boo thang happy. With all
the hustle and bustle this time of
year, find a little time to enjoy
the festivities the holiday season
has to offer. We have the best
snow on earth, so we have some
pretty amazing places to visit.
Like Ogden’s Christmas
Village. They light up the village
Saturday after Thanksgiving and
the lights will stay on until January 1st. On opening night, they
will have a parade featuring our
very own drum line. Towards the
end of the night, they finish it off
with a bang, literally. Hundreds
of fireworks fill the night sky.
The Draper ‘Tree of
Life’ is a spectacular display of
over 1,100 strands of lights and
350 spark lights that twinkle
and twist through almost every
branch of this weeping willow.
This attraction also opens after
Thanksgiving and will be open
throughout the New Year. Unlike a typical Christmas tree, this
willow represents the Tree of
Life, a symbol used for a religious representation of wisdom,
protection and redemption.
In the small city of
Midway outside of Heber, an
architect by the name of Brent
Christiansen came up with the
extravagant idea of sculpting
small castles out of ice. These
castles are literally built by hand.
The architects grow more than
5,000 icicles each day that are
harvested and sculpted together
to slowly build these amazing
castles that you can go inside of
and explore.
There are so many amazing things to go and explore
with your friends, family or that
special someone, so as soon as
the snow hits, get out there.

Are you Too “Plugged In”?

Phones are taking over our
world today. For those of you that
don’t know what a phone is, it’s
a hand held device that’s purpose
it to call, text, surf the web via
Internet, email, explore social
media, etc. Phones have become
extremely popular over the last ten
years. When phones first came out,
their primary purpose was to call.
Now with today’s technologies the
purpose of phones are much bigger.
Millions of people use them for a
big part of their everyday lives.
People are now getting
addicted to so many games on
their phones. They sometimes end
up paying thousands of dollars to
make their game better. It is becoming a big problem. People need
to start getting over these addiction
because it is making them poor and
making them lose jobs. Phone Addiction can affect people’s lives in
a negative way.
Sophomore Bridger Christiansen said “I think that phones
are great things to have and are
very useful. I use mine constantly
every day and it helps me do many
things, and is also very fun to use.
Although, they can be very addicting and can ruin people’s lives.
People care too much about their
phones and can cause them to
do badly in school and lose their
jobs.” Cell phones are great things
if you use them properly.
Phones have become very
addicting and life changing. They
are tools that can be used to hurt
people through texting or social
media. People also are addicted because they use them to play games
all day and it’s making them very
lazy. Ninety percent of people over
the age of ten have cell phones and
73% of them have smart phones.
“Smart Phone” means a phone that
is usually touch-screen, surfs the
web and has apps, etc. It is a phone
that is considered “better” or “more
cool” and all the fuss is about
them.
Phones have been an amazing creation and have helped our
world in many great ways. Communication is now one of the easiest thing to do thanks to phones.
They can be very addicting and
ruin people’s lives but if you use
them right then they will affect
your life in a positive way.

have a vegetarian Thanksgiving instead. They eat things like
squash, salads and other fruits or
vegetables.
Some people even eat vegetarian turkey which is made out of
tofu. As a part of the celebration,
some families break the turkey’s
wishbone, when the meat is off the
bone, dry and brittle: two people

grab the ends, make a wish, and
pull! The person with the larger
side of the wishbone is said to get
their wish granted!
Another thing families tend to
do a lot of on Thanksgiving is travel. Sophomore student Kyler Wilson said, “My mom’s side of the
family is spread all over, but my
dad’s side is all in Utah. On holidays my mom’s side of the family
decides where we are going to visit
that year, so typically we tend to
travel. On the occasions where we
stay in Utah or my mom’s side of
the family flies down here, we have
Thanksgiving in my house or in
my aunt’s house on my dad’s side.”
However you celebrate this
season, make sure to have fun, be
safe, give thanks and stuff your
round, chubby faces!

Who’s Your Idol?

Our school has many gifted
students, artists, singers, dancers,
comedians, and writers who showcased their talents at this year’s
Bonneville Idol.
We had a lot of students
who participated. Some did amazing solos, others performed together as groups. I would love to
mention them all, but don’t have
the space. So here are some of the
highlights, in case you missed it.
Juniors Aaron Judkins,
Brecklyn Boyer, and Kaylee Nelson performed “I Will Wait”, by
Mumford & Sons. Boyer played
the piano while Judkins played
guitar and sung by Nelson’s side.
Seniors Katie Waite, Madi
Dangerfield, Sabrina Fernilus,
Marissa Gonzales, and Lydia Taylor preformed “Wannabe” by The
Spice Girls. They sang and danced
along with the music, occasionally
going out and dancing inside the

crowd.
Seniors Jake Dickamore,
Nate Cunningham, Quinn Ulrich, and Eliaz Sanchez wrote an
original song, called “It’s Okay.”
Dickamore sang and played guitar,
Cunningham played the cello, Ulrich played the piano, and Sanchez
played the drums.
Performing on stage with
friends is a wonderful experience,
and can give you the courage to
perform alone, like Senior Marissa
Gonzales. After performing with
her group, she performed “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus on the
harp. Now, Miley doesn’t have the
greatest reputation, but Gonzales’s
arrangement blew the original song
out of the water!
Senior Leah Merrill performed a number from Wicked.
She sang her way up onto the
stage, hitting every high note the
entire way, and using her spunky
personality to get into character.
Senior Mason Turner sang
a Jazz song, “That Girl” by Justin
Timberlake. He picked up the mic,
and sang as he walked across the
stage, hitting all the high notes. It
seemed as though he was really
getting into it.
When Senior Brendan Lyon
was called up to perform, he got on
stage, grabbed the mic, and waited
for the music to start. Music he had
completely composed all by himself. It stayed silent for a bit, and
then the tech crew called over their
mic. “Please bring up your music, we don’t have it.” The whole
crowd’s energy just dropped. We
all felt for him. Luckily, only two
performances later, they found
Lyon’s music and he got his chance
to shine.
Sophmore Josh Sorenson
shocked the crowd when he got on
stage and began to break dance.
He spun on the floor and moved to
every beat. It was a stunning performance that earned him the idol
by the end of the night.
My personal favorite was
when sophomore Amy Campo
proved that sophomores aren’t all
small and weak. Campo appeared
on stage in a red, flowing dress,
and looked as though she was
about to do ballet, but soon she
threw off the dress to reveal boxing
attire.
Then Trevor Osborn, an
English teacher, appeared on the
opposite side of the stage and the
two began to spar.
Congrats to all who had
the guts to go up on stage. We are
proud of all of you.

Beatty is a Beast on the Field and on the Court

Many people know senior
Kobe Beatty as a great athlete and
friend. He played running back and
Defensive Back this past football
season.
Oftentimes, he played so
well the crowd would cheer his
name almost every game. This year
Beatty scored 11 touchdowns, had
115 carries, and ran 769 yards. For
defense he had; three interceptions,
69 tackles, 886 kick return yards,
and two returns for touchdowns.
What a great senior season!
When asked about his
hopes for college, Beatty said, “I’m
not committing to a school until
after basketball season.”
Even with his very impressive football stats he prefers basketball over football. This athletic
star supports Utah State as a fan.
Junior Andrew Kemp said
“He’s a great athlete to have on
your team.” I’m sure the whole
team agrees with that!
But more than just being
a great teammate, Beatty also has
lots of friends around Bonneville.
Moises Moran said “I’m his brother and he’s definitely D1 bound.”
For those that don’t know,
D1 means Division 1 which are the
best schools.
Beatty also loves to play
Xbox and go lift weights when he
is not practicing.
He has been balling since
he was in fourth grade. Nine years
of his life have been dedicated to
sports. If that isn’t impressive, I
don’t know what is.
“He has so much motivation and always gives his all. His
determination to win is a great
worth ethic. He works above and
beyond what is asked of him and
that’s what sets him apart from
other athletes, I think. I know he’s
going to accomplish everything he
wants to do in life. I am excited
to see where he goes” said senior
Hallie Mayes.
Beatty wants to be an athletic trainer in the future, but whatever he ends up doing he definitely
has a bright future and I’m sure
we will be hearing more about him
after he graduates.

Jefferies Juggles Sports and School

Senior Hailey Jefferies is
one of the volleyball players on
Bonneville’s team this year. She is
also one of the team captains and
many of her teammates look up to
her.
Jefferies said, “One of the
main reasons I started playing
volleyball was because my friends
were doing it and I wanted to hang
out with them. I tried out for the
team and made it, and have loved it
ever since.”
Jefferies puts a lot of work
into her volleyball and loves the
sport and the coaches she works
with. Her main inspirations are her
coaches and her friends. Jefferies
specifically named senior Brooklyn
Porter as one of her greatest friends
and inspirations in volleyball.
Jefferies’ coaches love having her on the team. Head coach
Angela Williams said “Hailey is a
very hard worker, she cares deeply
about her teammates on and off the

court. She is very talented and is
one of our captains this year.”
Jefferies has worked very
hard to get where she is and enjoys
playing on Bonneville’s team.
Balancing school and volleyball is one of Jefferies biggest
trials. It is always hard to focus on
sports while trying to stay caught
up in school.
Jefferies said “I just try to
stay focused on the task at hand,
whether I’m at volleyball or at
home doing homework. That way I
can stay caught up in school while
still being able to perform well for
my team.”
It is impressive that students like Jefferies can perform
well in sports while being able to
stay focused in school. Her teammates look up to her and see her
as a leader on and off the court.
The coaches and team love to have
Jefferies around and are glad she
decided to try out for the team this
year.

Hear it
for our
Football
Team

As we all know Bonneville football has had a rough few
years. But this year they started
their season off right by beating
Ogden at our Homcoming game.
Some of the football captains were, Noah Atagi, Braxton
Wright, Tyrus Peck and Andrew
DeHart, All of them are team
players and leaders to try and get
everyone to try their hardest and
come out with a BANG!
Drew Thorngren a senior
said, “ I loved playing on the
football team this year because
it was great to be with my brothers and to see everyone and have
each others back.”
Bonnevilles students
loved to come and support our
boys every Friday night, all of
our stands were full which is
awesome.
Everyone loved to see
these boys come together as a
team and play. Win or lose they
still came out as a team and
played their hardest this year.
Jaden Cooper a sophomore said “I honestly just loved
being apart of the team, and
being able to get closer to my
brothers.”
Cory Hauenstein, a senior,
said, “It was great to play for
such an awesome coaching staff
that put us right in the postion to
excel and cared for us so much.”
On August, 27th, we
played Northridge and unforuntally we lost a tragic game of 3534. Everyone was super bummed,
but all that mattered was that the
team went out there and played
their hardest and came together
as a team and played their hearts
out.

Our Girls Bump, Set, and Spike it Up

Our Bonneville girls’ volleyball team has been working its
hardest this year and they had a
really great season.
The varsity team captains
are seniors: Sam Filiaga, Allie
Bunn, and Hailey Jefferies. The
head coach is Angie Williams with
Caitlin Bowers and Lisa Hancok
helping her out in her coaching duties.
Amanda Memmott, a junior and the team’s outside hitter,
said, “The toughest team to beat
is always Bountiful, but our best
rivalry is with Ogden.”
Their season has come to
and end, but they did so well and
rocked it so hard we want to take a
moment to recognize them.
First of all, they took third
in region and went on to the state
tournament. That, in itself, is an
awesome accomplishment.
Then, in the state tournament which took place down at
UVU, they placed 8th overall.
Filiaga said, “I think our
season was awesome. We had a re-
ally close team this year so it was a
lot of fun.”
She also said her favorite
thing about playing volleyball
is “being with the team and also
smaking the ball in people’s faces.”
Next year will be equally
great as there was a lot of young
talent on the team this years. Congrats and best of luck next year.

Bop to the Top

Last year was a great year
for our cheer team. They took state
and 5th at nationals. That’s the
past though. We have a great new
team and a new coach. The captain
this year is Hallie Mayes, the cocaptain is Jenna Eidemiller, and the
secretary is Ellie Rasmussen. There
is the junior captain, Breonca
Bernard and sophomore captain,
Solace Dannehl.
The cheer team this year
has performed a few times. They
did the opening assembly, the outdoor assembly and halftime at the
homecoming game. Of course to
they do all of the football games.
Jake Tipetts, a senior, said,
“The cheerleaders are the raddest.” And they do try to be. Gabby
Shupe said, “She loves her state
ring.” This year’s team is working
hard to get there again.The year
has been rough for the team. But
they are working very hard and
they have improved quite a bit.
Junios Cassilyn Anderson
said “Cheer is neat and this year is
going to be neat.” And cheer is really cool, they work very hard every day to make Bonneville proud.
The team loves football
games and loves it when the crowd
cheers with them and gets excited
about the game. It’s so fun to watch
people get excited after you tumble
or do a cool stunt.
Dannehl said, “It is really
hard to get the team and crowd excited when the crowd doesn’t want
to participate and I wish they were
louder even if we are losing.”
Competition season is
coming up in December. The cheer
team has a few competitions a
month and they are really fun to
watch. If Bonneville can come to
some competitions to support, the
cheerleaders said it would be much
appreciated. Comp season is hard
because of the early practices every
day, a lot of tears and sweat and a
few injuries. Last year was great
for the cheer team and this year the
team plans on being even better.
Cross Country Can Run Circles Around You

Cross Country is a sport in
which teams and individuals run
a race on open-air courses over
natural terrain.
I interviewed Mikayla
Hargrove, a junior on the Cross
Country team, and this is what she
said about Cross Country. “Cross
Country is different because in
Cross Country there aren’t players,
just runners. It’s unique because
we don’t compete against just one
other team, but several. At our big
meets, there are usually twenty-five
other teams and in our region alone
there are about five teams. A big
race can have up to eight-hundred
runners.”
Bonneville’s girls team got
fifth place at state against sixteen
other 4A schools, and the boys
team got eleventh place at state.
Hargrove said “Girls took
second place at region this year.
Ogden beat us by three points and
we honestly could have won but
our fastest girl, Jessica Peterson,
a sophomore, got spiked and ran
the whole race without a shoe. She
got third place, but with both shoes
she usually would have gotten first
place. Peterson’s personal record
is 18:44. Our fastest boy runner
is Denver Perry, a junior. His PR
is 15:17. The difference in Cross
Country is that we not only work
as a team but we also strive to get
our own personal records as individuals.”
Cross Country generally
trains six days a week in the mountains through the heat of summer,
the cold of winter and everything
else in-between. Most of the cross
country runners also run both
indoor and outdoor track. Cross
country runs daily averages of six
miles. The long runs are ten miles
for the girls team and twelve miles
for the boys team.
Hargrove’s mile pace for a
three mile race is 6:30 and her best
time is a 20:07 for cross country,
and 5:50 for track. There are thirtysix or more people on the cross
country team.
Hargrove said, “Even
though training is tough and timeconsuming I really enjoy Cross
Country because it keeps me in
shape. I could run my whole life
unlike other sports that you must
give up. I think it is a unique sport
and I enjoy the talks I have with
my team on our long runs.”
