Editor’s Note – Special Year for OFRA!
Toimittajalta– OFRA’n Erikoisvuosi!
2016 is a very special year at OFRA—well, every year is
special at OFRA but 2016 is EXTRA SPECIAL! Mauno Kaihla
Koti celebrated 25 years in March. Suomi Eesti Maja will
be 40 years young in September. And then to top it off,
we will have residents moving into Uusi Koti later this
year. So many things to celebrate!
2016 on OFRA:n erikoisvuosi, no joka vuosi on on
OFRA:ssa erikoinen, mutta 2016 on ERITYISEN ERIKOINEN! Mauno Kahila Koti vietti maaliskuussa 25vuotisjuhlaansa. Suomi Eesti Maja on vain 40 vuotta
nuori syyskuussa. Ja lopuksi kirsikkana kakussa Uusi
Koti saa uudet asukkaansa myöhemmin luppuvuodesta. On monta syytä juhlaan!

the vision of our past and current boards, our donors, volunteers, staff and a lot of hard work by everyone. Give
yourselves a huge round of applause—we are all grateful
for everything you have done and continue to do.

As the Ontario Finnish Resthome Foundation Board of Directors looks back to 2015 and we are overwhelmed with the
dedication and support of our staff, volunteers and members. Together we raised an astounding $322,000 in both
monetary and in-kind donations. We are grateful to you for your ongoing assistance in meeting and surpassing our
goals.
Your dedication has enabled us to support many important initiatives at OFRA including:

Freezer/Fridge upgrade for the Dietary Department that caters to both Kotitalo & Mauno Kaihla Koti

Continued support in the building of Uusi Koti

Funding for the construction of a new Community Garden for all our residents

Automatic hinges for all Kotitalo apartments
We would also like to note that since the beginning of the Uusi Koti Campaign, we have raised over $1.2 million including donations, pledges and in-kind donations. Every dollar you have contributed has taken us one step closer in completing our Uusi Koti Campaign. These numbers are proof that the community supports us in our effort to meet our $2
million goal.

Upcoming Fundraisers
Grab your mom & dad, your grandma & grandpa, all your friends and family and
let’s Walk & Roll to raise money for OFRA!! This fun event will take place on
Saturday May 14 2016 in the Gymnasium at Superior Heights High School right
across from the Ontario Finnish Resthome followed by a BBQ in the Kestitupa at
721 North St.
All participants who register for the event on or before Monday May 2, 2016 will have their name entered to win a
PRIZE! There is no minimum number of laps that a participant must complete but feel free to compete against your
friends and family!! Just make sure you stay safe, stay hydrated and have fun!!
To begin the walk, participants must submit all monies raised with a minimum of $30 to enter. Get all your friends
involved because the participant who raises the most money in their age group will also receive a prize! Proceeds from
this event will go towards the OFRA building or area of your choice. Receipts will be issued for all donations of $20 or
more. However, donors who sign up for or are already receiving annual receipts, will be issued for all donations of $10
or more.

Save the Date for the Uusi Koti Finale!
The Foundation is hosting our Uusi Koti Campaign Grand Finale Fundraiser. So mark your calendars for Friday, September 9th 2016, at The Water Tower Inn and Conference Centre, on Great Northern Road. Come enjoy a night to remember with more food, bigger prizes and the best music in town!!! So stay tuned and in touch for regular updates!!
2016-2017 50/50 Cash Lottery
Back by popular demand is our bi-weekly 50/50 Cash Lottery. Over our last three lotteries our total winnings exceeded
$17,200 with an average draw prize of $236! Proceeds from these lotteries has helped to purchase many items for
the residents of all three buildings.
OFRA’s 4th 50/50 Cash Lottery will be starting Friday May 6, 2016. The draw will be held every other Friday, in the
Kestitupa in Suomi Eesti Maja at 2pm. The cost is still only $5 per ticket, per draw—pay a for the whole year so you
don’t miss a draw! Again, all the money raised will continue to go towards the purchase of Seniors Recreational Therapy Equipment and Assistive Devices here at OFRA. To register and purchase your ticket, please visit the Fundraising
Office.
Cookbooks & Calendars
Almost ¾ of our “Recipes from Ontario Finnish Resthome Families” cookbooks are sold!! So if you haven’t purchased
yours yet, you better get one before they’re gone!! These cookbooks are only $18 each with 100% of the sales returning to the Foundation and to the residents of OFRA.
The “OFRA in the Community” Calendar is now on sale for a reduced price of $15 each! This calendar highlights some
of OFRA’s most memorable events and activities. Come check it out and see if you or your loved one is in it!! All proceeds from the sale of these calendars will go towards the Uusi Koti Campaign!!
OFRA Bench, Stone & Rose Garden Fundraisers
Spend a few moments in amongst the trees, beside the pond or along the pathways surrounding the OFRA grounds
relaxing in peace and comfort. Dedicating a Bench, Stone or Rose is the perfect way to remember a loved one and will
provide a lasting tribute for all to see for years to come. All purchases will receive a Charitable Donation Tax receipt.

Bench: The 6 foot cedar composite bench is guaranteed to last for 50 years and includes a bronze plaque (3
lines, 18 characters each). The price also includes. Your choice of bench placement on the campus (depending
on availability), Dedication Certificate suitable for framing, Recognition on Donor Wall in Uusi Koti, Your choice
of donation fund allocation. (Monthly payments or a one-time fee of $1,750 per bench.)

Stone: The 6in x 6in square brick can be located in the Friendship Rose Garden or in the newly constructed Uusi
Koti Gazebo which includes engraving = (One-time fee of $175 per stone)

Rose: The well-manicured roses come in a variety of beautiful colors that are visited by birds regularly. A name
plaque will be engraved on a 1 in x 2 in plaque that will be placed in front of a rose in the garden. (Annual fee of
$25)

Tulevia Varojenkeräystapahtumia
Ota äiti, isä, mummot, papat ja kaikki ystäväsi perheineen “Walk & Roll”tapahtumaan keräämään lahjoituksia OFRA:lle!! Tapahtuma järjestetään toukokuun 14. päivä Superior Heights High Schoolin urheilusalissa aivan kadun
toisella puolella Ontario Finnish Rest Home:sta. Tapahtuman jälkeen järjestetään BBQ Kestituvalla osoitteessa 721 North St.

Säätiö isännöi Uusi Koti-kamppanjan Varojenkeräyksen Suurta Loppujuhlaa. Joten varaa kalenteristasi perjantai

OFRA Penkki, Kivi ja Ruusutarhakeräys
Vietä muutama hetki puiden parissa, lammen rannalla tai OFRA:a kiertavillä poluilla rentoutuen ja rauhoittuen. Omistamalla penkki, kivi tai ruusu rakkaan muistolle on loistava tapa muistaa ja jättää kestävä muisto kaikille tulevia vuosia
varten. Kaikki hankinnat saavat verokelpoisen kuitin.

Penkki: Noin kaksimetrisellä (6 jalkaa) seetrikomposiittipenkillä on 50 vuoden kestävyystakuu. Pekki on

News from the Ladies Auxiliary
We’ve moved onto a new year and made our way through another winter. I’m sure everyone
will agree that we got away with little snow and cold. The Ladies Auxiliary kept busy all winter.
We saw again that the various sales and coffee breaks continue to grow year over year.
The Finnish coffee bread “pulla” is always in demand. It has a great reputation all over the
world. Proceeds from pulla sales have helped build many halls and even churches.
The Sault Ste. Marie Public Library had two events over the winter where pulla was in high demand. At the Culture
Days, the public also had a chance to admire the beautiful regional outfit from Lapland.
Valentine’s Day was another busy day at Suomi-Eesti Maja – we held our Valentine’s Tea and Bazaar.
Spring brings the highly anticipated Fashion Show. We always feel like we’ve been to a Paris runway after this event!
Check out the great finds at the clothing section of the Flea Market – all items for the Fashion show are from there!
Spring also has us remembering and celebrating Mother’s Day with a Tea and Bazaar – join us on May 7th!
Sometimes we wonder amongst our friends, what will be in 20-30 years. We older ones will be gone, and the youngsters will be older. Will there still be someone to knit socks and bake pulla? Time will tell. There will be new ideas
and technology advancements….we hope!
Naisjaoston kuulumisia
No niin, on siirrytty uuteen vuoteen ja talvesta on selvitty tähän asti. Uskon, että monety meistä olemme hyvin
tyytyväisiä, kun pääsimme niin vähällä lamella ja pakkasella. Naisjaostolla riitti kiireitä koko talveksi. Huomasimme
taas kerran, että myyjäisten ja kahviaisten suosio vain kasvaa vuosi vuodelta.
Suomalaisella pullalla on kova kysyntä. Se on hyvässä maineessa ympäri mailmaa. Sen avulla on tällä mantereella
aikoinaan rakennettu monta “haalia” ha kirkkojakin.
Kaupungin kirjastossa oli talven aikana kaksikin tilaisuutta, missä pullalla oli hyvä menestys. Eri kansallissksien päivänä sai yleisö myöskin ihailla kaunista Lapin pukua.
Valentine päivänä oli taas Suomi-Eesti Majalla kiireistä aikaa. Oli Tee ja Bazaar tilaisuus.
Keväällä on myöskin susittu fashion show. Sen jälkeen tuntuu niinkuin olisi Pariisissa käynyt. Suomi-Eesti Majan
Muoti-Aitasta voi tehdä tosi hienoja löytöjä.
Vähitellen siirrymme kevääseen, ja muistetaanpa Äitienpäivän Tee ja Bazaar ( 7 pva toukokuu).
Joskus pohdimme ystävien kanssa, kuinka kaikki on 20-30 vuoden kuluttua. Mevanhat olemme jo pois, ja nuoremmat ovat tulleet iäkkäiksi. Vieläkö löytyy sukan kutoija ja pullan paistajia? Aika sen näyttää. Ehkä silloin on uudet
ideat ja tekniikka pelaa…Toivottavasti!

News from the CEO’s Desk:
Time continues to fly by, and with it, many noteworthy items for the Around the Pond readership. I’ve compiled below a list of the most significant developments since the last issue. These are exciting times for OFRA as the organization continues to grow!
MKK Redevelopment
Work is proceeding with the application to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care for
funding to build a new MKK. The level of detail required for the application is large: funding
plans, building drawing, costs broken down by building phase, and much more.
OFRA has partnered with a local architectural firm, MGP Architects to begin the design of the
new MKK. The first draft of the floorplan was presented to the OFRA Board MKK Redevelopment Committee and a selection of RNs, RPNs and PSWs to be sure that the design takes into account input from staff
that will be working in the space every day. The wishlist that MKK staff developed over the fall was used extensively
in the design process, and the additional input provided by those in attendance for the floorplan presentation provided even more.
The next steps are to fold the identified costs of the new build into the MOHLTC Redevelopment Funding Application,
present to the MKK Redevelopment Committee, and submit OFRA’s application to the Ministry of Health Project
Management Office.
Purchasing/Marketing
Historically OFRA performed purchasing functions through at least 5 different staff for many of the same (or similar)
items. Because of this, our organization was not able to take advantage of bulk pricing and may have unintentionally
been over-paying for our regularly used supplies. Another ramification of this practice is storage space utilization: no
one person is managing the use of our very limited storage space, which results in a less-than-efficient usage.
Additionally, managing the community’s perception of what OFRA is and does, and emphasizing the value which we
bring to the community in terms of senior’s housing and care is a critically important function that OFRA will now be
engaged in. There are a number of vehicles which OFRA will be leveraging to do that, including in-person presentations, booths, tours, and managing our various social media accounts.
Uusi Koti Construction Update
Uusi Koti construction continues at a very brisk pace, with the upper floors now being erected… in fact, the building is
now quite visible from Second Line! Internal framing/dry-walling is being done on floors 1, 2, and 3 as the floor(s)
above are being erected. While it is too early to say for certain that construction will meet its November 2016 deadline, the mild winter we have been having is most certainly contributing to a quicker construction pace than we could
have hoped for.
A very successful “Meet & Greet” was organized on January 28, 2016 by Heidi Schell. All Uusi Koti tenants were invited to hear updates on the construction and ask key questions about the finished product and any other Uusi Koti related topics. Questions ranged from enquiries about availability of outdoor electrical outlets, to parking, to building
security.
Fund raising remains a very critical component to the project, as OFRA still needs to acquire funds for common space
furnishings, window dressings, and various equipment. To that end, Heidi Schell recently organized a Paint Nite fundraiser, which was a huge success with a great many attendees. My sincere thanks and congratulations to Heidi for
volunteering to do this… it was a great deal of work, but definitely worth it.

Uutisia Pääjohtajalta:
Aika rientää eteenpäin ja tuo mukanaan kiinnostavia asioita lehtisemme lukioille. Olen kerännyt tähän listan viime
lehtisen ilmestymisen jälkeisistä tapahtumista. Tämä on jännittävää aikaa OFRA'lle, organisaation yhä kasvaessa!
MKK Jälleenkehitys
Työstämme parhaillaan hakemusta Ministry of Health and Long Term Care'lle uutta MKK
varten. Hakemus on hyvin vaativa ja yksityiskohtineen: rahoitus-suunnitelma, rakennuspiirrustukset, kustannusarviot
vaiheittain jne.
OFRA'lla on kumppanina hankkeessa paikallinen MGP Architects, joka aloittaa uuden MKK suunnittelun. Ensimmäinen
vedos pohjasuunnitelmasta esiteltiin OFRA'n lautakunnalle, MKK'n Jälleenkehitys Komitealle sekä valitulle hoitohenkilökunnalle, varmistuaksemme siitä , että suunnitelmassa huomioidaan nimenomaan heidän päivittäiset tarpeensa.
Erityisesti otettiin huomioon MKK henkilökunnan toiveita, joita he toivat esiin kuluneen syksyn aikana. Myös muiden
paikalla olleiden panos oli hyvin arvokas.
Seuraava askel prosessissa on saada uuden rakennuksen arvioidut kulut MOHLTC rahoitusanomukseen, esittää se
MKK Jälleenrakennus Komitealle sekä jättää OFRA'n anomus Ministry of Health Project Management Office'lle.
Sisäänosto/Markkinointi
OFRA on tähänasti käyttänyt sisäisiin hankintoihin ainakin viittä eri ostoskanavaa, monien samanlaisten tai hyvin samankaltaisten tuotteiden hankinnassa. Tästä epäkohdasta johtuen organisaatiomme ei ole voinut hyötyä sille tarjolla
olevista eduista ja mahdollisista säästöistä ja on näinollen maksanut turhia kuluja. Edellämainitusta käytännöstä on
ollut myös se seuraus , että ei ollut ketään, joka olisi vastannut varastoinnista ja vähäisen varastotilan tehokkaasta
käytöstä.
Tavoitteemme on positiivisen julkisuuskuvamme esilläolo yhteisössämme. On tärkeää , että meidät tunnetaan erinomaisena vanhustenhoidon ja palvelujen toimittajana.Tähän tarkoitukseen meillä on käytettävänämme useita hyviä
kanavia mm. Henkilökohtaiset esittelyt, tutustumiskierrokset sekä eri sosiaalisenmedian kanavat.
Uusi Koti rakennuksen edistyminen
Uuden Kodin rakentaminen jatkuu ripeää vauhtia, ylempien kerrosten seiniä pystytetään parhaillaan ..... rakennus
itseasiassa näkyy jo Second Linelta. Sisäseiniä pystytetään jo kolmessa alimmassa kerroksessa ja ylempiä jo rakennetaan. Vaikka onkin todennäköisesti liian aikasta sanoa varmasti, että rakennus valmistuu suunniteltuun ajankohtaan ( marraskuu 2016), leuto talvi on edesauttanut aikataulussa pysymistä ja rakennuksen nopeaa etenemistä.
Heidi Schell järjesti onnistuneen "Meet & Greet" , 28 tammikuuta 2016. Kaikki Uuden Kodin tulevat asukkaat oli
kutsuttu koolle kuulemaan viimeisimmät uutiset rakennuksesta sekä esittämään mahdolliset kysymyksensä Uuteen
Kotiin liittyvistä aiheista. Esille tulleet kysymykset olivat moninaisia mm.talon turvatoimista, käytettävissä olevista
parkkipaikoista jne.
Varankeräys on yksi projektimme tärkeä komponentti. OFRA tarvitsee edelleen käyttövaroja yhteisten tilojen kalustamiseen, verhoihin sekä erinäisiin laitteisiin. Tätä tarkoitusta varten Heidi Schell järjesti Paint
Night hyväntekeväisyysillan. Ilta oli erittäin onnistunut. Tahdon tässä osoittaa Heidille lämpimät kiitokset ja onnittelut
menestykkään illan johdosta. Illan organisoinnissa oli paljon työtä, mutta vaivannäkö oli sen arvoista.
Oletko kiinostunut siitä mitä OFRA'lla tapahtuu? Olen aina valmis keskustelemaan kiinostuneiden osapuolten kanssa
uusista tapahtumistamme. Kannustan kaikki joilla on mahdollisia kysymyksiä , huolenaiheita tai kommentteja ottamaan minuun suoraa yhteyttä.
Olen aina kiinostunut tapaamaan uusia ihmisiä jotka ovat yhtä kiinostuneita OFRA'n menestyksestä niinkuin minäkin!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT— MEET MARKETTA HALONEN
Marketta Halonen is lady of many talents! Born in Eno,
Finland (close to Joensuu), Marketta moved to Thunder
Bay in 1968 with her husband to find their fortune.
Sadly this adventure was cut short as her husband died.
Marketta and her children carried on despite this tragedy until 1977 when Marketta met Pekka. He was on a
fishing trip and got the best catch ever – Marketta! The
new family moved to the shores of Lake Huron in 1979.
Marketta has been volunteering, baking and sewing for
OFRA and the Ladies Auxiliary for over 10 years and
also volunteered at the St. Mary’s Lutheran Church.
I was fortunate to see where the sewing magic happens
– the sewing machine is tucked away in a corner
amongst the boxes of yarn (sorted by colour) and various fabrics – mittens and children’s tool belts emerge from these. The opposite wall houses Marketta’s pig collection
– last count is about 200 – no room for more.
The other sewing material is empty coffee bags or bird seed
bags – these are recycled into lovely bags. Marketta’s sister,
Riitta, has just shipped new styles of handbags from Joensuu
to add to the collection.
Marketta also has a love of
woodcrafts – her walls are
adorned by many creations
by local artisans. Marketta
herself has made hats and
bags from bark along with
greeting cards. Her imagination knows no limits.
Marketta Halonen is a familiar face on Pulla making day. It’s a team effort for the
Ladies Auxiliary but Marketta is often the first one in the door getting the first dough
started – often at 7am. They are currently up to 12,800 loaves (and counting) –
that’s 10 years of baking. Each session is carefully logged in THE notebook. Marketta loves to bake – she also leads the “S” cookie bake for the Sault Finnish School
fundraising.
Look for Marketta at the next Ladies Auxiliary Tea and give her a hug and a huge Thank You!
Her creations are available at the Ladies Flea Market as well. We love you Marketta!

Vapaaehtoinen Valokeilassa – Marketta Halosta tapaamassa
Marketta Halonen on monien taitojen nainen! Hän on syntynyt Enossa Joensuun lähistöllä ja muuttanut
Thunder Bayhyn 1968 miehensä kansaa rakentamaan tulevaisuutta. Valitettavasti onni loppui lyhyeen kun
hänen miehensä kuoli. Tragediasta huolimatta Marketta jatkoi lapsineen eteenpäin kunnes hän tapasi Pekan
vuonna 1977. Pekka oli kalastusmatkalla ja nappasi kaikkienaikojen saaliin – Marketan! Uusi perhe muutti
Huron-järven rannoille vuonna 1979.
Marketta on toiminut vapaaehtoisena, leiponut ja ommellut OFRA:lle ja naisten osastossa yli kymmenen
vuotta, hän on myös vapaaehtoistyöntekijä St. Maryn Luterilaisessa Kirkossa.
Minulla oli onni nähdä missä neulonta- ja ompelutaika tapahtuu
– ompelukone on työnnetty nurkkaan lankalaatikoiden
(järjestetty väreittäin) ja erilaisten kankaiden keskelle – näistä
syntyy lapaset ja lasten työkaluvyöt. Vastakkaisella seinällä on
Marketan possukokoelma – viime laskujen mukaan noin 200 –
tilaa ei ole
enemmille.
Toinen ompelumateriaali on tyhjät kahvi- tai linnunsiemenpussit – nämä kierrätetään kasseiksi ja laukuiksi.
Marketan sisko Riitta on juuri lähettänyt uusia käsilaukkumalleja Joensuusta kokoelman jatkeeksi.
Marketta pitää myös puutöistä – seinät on koristeltu paikallisten artesaanien luomuksilla. Marketta itse on
tehnyt kaarnahattuja onnittelukorttien ohella. Hänen mielikuvituksellaan ei ole rajoja.
Marketta Halonen on tuttu kasvo Pullan leivontapäivänä. Kyseessä on naisten osaston yhteinen ponnistus
mutta usein Marketta on ensimmäisenä ovella
ja alustamassa ensimmäistä taikinaa – usein
seitsemältä aamulla. Nyt on luotu 12 800 pulla
pitkoa (ja tuotanto jatkuu) – siinä on kymmenen vuoden leivonnaiset. Jokainen leivontakerta on huolellisesti kirjattu Muistikirjaan.
Marketta rakastaa leipomista - Hän vetää
myös S-piparien leivontaa Saultin suomalaisen koulun varojen
keruussa.
Etsi Marketta käsiisi seuraavassa naisten osaston teetilaisuudessa ja anna hänelle halaus ja Suuri Kiitos! Hänen luomuksiaan on saatavilla myös naisten osaston kirpputorilta. Rakastamme Sinua Marketta!

Uusi Koti työn alla
Uusi Koti-rakennusprojekti edistyy joka päivä. Lokakuussa olleen peruskiven muurauksen jälkeen olemme
nähneet rakennuksen nousun kerros kerrokselta samalla kun runko, sähkötyöt ja johdotukset nousevat
katutasosta ylös seuraaviin kerroksiin. En voi peitellä innostustani kun päivittäin näen asioiden edistymisen
ja saan puheluita tulevilta Uusi Koti-asukkailta, jotka jakavat jännityksen odottaessaan pääsevänsä muuttamaan sisään. Kuudennesta kerroksesta otetuista kuvista näet mahtavat maisemat: Kanada-päivän
ilotulitus, syksyn kauniit värit ja kauniisti valaistun kansainvälisen sillan.
Olemme todella kiitollisia Johtoryhmälle OFRA:n kasvun edistämisestä senioreiden tarpeiden tyydyttämisestä yhteisössämme.
OFRA on enemmän kuin pelkkä asuinpaikka. Se on koti, yhteisö, perusta jolle asukkaiden mukavuus ja
turvallisuus perustuu kun he nauttivat elämänsä seniorivuosista.

Winter(Spring?) Greetings from the OFRA Theraputic Recreation /Activity
Departments!
The Annual “Christmas Tea & Bazaar” to raise funds for the Rec. Therapy/ Activity Departments that occurred
in November last year was a success and gifts for all MKK and Kotitalo residents were bought – over $3,600 was
raised!! Thank you to all who bought a ticket to attend, volunteered at the event, or who made a monetary donation,
or donated baked and/or knitted goods for the sale! A big THANK YOU to the Ladies Auxiliary for baking all the pulla
sold that day!!
The “Adopt-a-Resident for Christmas” program at MKK this past December again was a huge success!! A great

Many OFRA staff took on buying gifts for multiple residents, and many chose not to be reimbursed – I truly appreciate your help and efforts!! The gifts were personalized and bought from the heart, to make the resident’s Christmas so wonderful!! Thank you as well to all the volunteers who baked goodies for each party and/or who helped out
or entertained each night – I can not do it without all of you!!!
February was a rough month – we had some outbreaks that at KOT and MKK and residents were getting restless, but March more than made up for it, with a St. Patty’s Pub night AND party day, St. Urho’s Celebration, Easter celebration, and the 25th Anniversary of the opening of MKK!!
And as always, if you, your children/teens, or grandchildren, are available to do any volunteering, we are accepting applications. Forms can be picked up from the MKK or KOT TR / Activity staff, at the MKK/KOT front desk, or
from myself – office beside the Kotitalo Chapel. Individuals 18 and over must have a police check done – these forms
are with the volunteer packet!

Vuosittainen “Joulun Tee & Basaari” järjestettiin marraskuussa varojen hankkimiseksi Terapiaja Toimintaosastoille. Tuotot olivat yli $3,600 ja varoilla hankittiin lahjoja Kaikille MMK:n ja Kotitalon asukkaille. Kiitos kaikille, jotka ostivat lipun tilaisuuteen, toimivat vapaaehtoisina, tekivät
