Your Support Makes
Pleasant Hill #1
In Pleasant Hill School District #1, there
are several reasons we truly feel we are
“#1”:
• High graduation rate (most
recently the #1 rate in Lane
County)
• 100% highly qualified staff, who
exhibit genuine care and concern
for students and their learning
• Strong state achievement scores
• Student programs that include
a variety of activities including
athletics and music
• Unrivaled community support
One of the best examples of
community support is the tremendous
financial assistance we receive from
the Pleasant Hill Education Foundation.
We are extremely grateful to the
Foundation for all the ways they have
enhanced our education program,
providing students and staff those
opportunities and resources that make
a Pleasant Hill education special.
Your donation to the Pleasant Hill
Education Foundation has a direct,
positive impact on creating a better
experience for Pleasant Hill students.
Thank you for the PHenomenal
support!
Sincerely,
Tony Scurto
District Superintendent

Scholarships Offer Support for
Pleasant Hill Graduates
Thanks to partnerships with
local individuals and alumni,
$5,250 in college scholarships
was awarded to Pleasant Hill
graduates.
The Katie Lovelace
Scholarship & Pleasant Hill
Legacy Scholarship
M’kya Brown
M’kya is attending Lane
Community College this fall.
She was a founding member
2014 Scholarship recipients
of Cupcakes for a Cause. The
M’kya Brown and Deepraj Pawar
club would bake, frost, and
sell cupcakes after school and give proceeds each month to
local charities in our area. She was also an active participant
in R.E.A.C.H., Student Council, and was a 2014 Mr. Billie
Coordinator.
Joan Hladky Creativity Scholarship
Deepraj Pawar
Deepraj is attending Whitman College in Walla Walla,
Washington. She was an instrumental part of the Destination
Imagination team all four years of high school, making it to the
Global Finals the last two years. She also was very active in
Publications, Student Council, and the Reaching Out Mentoring
Program.
Grant Kickstarts Robotics Team
Last year, a Pleasant Hill Education Foundation grant helped
start the FTC Robotics team, Gromit’s Grommets. With a
generous grant from the State Legislature via the Oregon
Department of Education, along with other sponsorships, the
team was able to purchase materials and register to compete.
Eight students in grades 7 through 11 embarked on the
task of designing, building, programming, and strategizing to
compete in tournaments.
The team won highest honors at one qualifying tournament
and was on the winning alliance at a second competition.
At the State Championships in March, 50 of Oregon and
Washington’s best teams met in Portland. The team fared well
in pool play and marched through the elimination brackets in
Cinderella fashion to become captains of the Oregon winning
alliance—the first ever non-Portland team to win!
At that point, the students really went to work, soliciting
donations from local businesses and community members
to fund their trip to the Super-Regional tournament in
Sacramento, and in two short weeks, the students raised over
$4,500! In Sacramento, Gromit’s Grommets competed against
71 teams from 17 states. They built some great friendships,
learned a lot, and placed 12th overall.
Congratulations to Gromit’s Grommets! Thank you for
representing Pleasant Hill in an admirable way. We wish you
the best of luck in this upcoming season.
Long Family Scholarship
Garrett Davis
Garrett was a 2013 graduate of PHHS and a recipient of a multiyear scholarship last year. He is attending OSU, where he is
working hard to obtain his degree in Engineering.
Our Mission
The Pleasant Hill Education Foundation, in partnership
with our community and alumni, provides funds
to inspire learning, enhance teaching, and create
opportunities for every student.
Our Mission in Pictures
Examples of how the PHEF
lives up to its mission include:
(top left) hands-on science
equipment to inspire learning
by providing science investigation labs for sixth graders;
(bottom left) new opportunities like a start-up grant to
provide funds for student leaders to learn peer-to-peer
mediation; (top right) enhancing teaching by placing iPads
in classrooms, engaging students and supporting the
learning process.
