We will again emphasize the following themes:“The White Cane is a Symbol of Ability NOT Disability” and “Changing what it means to be blind”. During White Cane Week our members and volunteers participate in many different public events at the chapter division and national levels. All events are committed to raising the awareness of the White Cane as a “symbol of ability not disability” and extending public support for the accessibility that is crucial to the quality of life for those in our community – the community of the blind and visually impaired. The National Invitational Curling Bonspiel held in Ottawa last year is returning under a new name, “The CCB National Curling Championships. The number of teams has been limited to 10 with the 2006 Champions appearing to defend their title. This exciting event will again provide a platform to demonstrate the abilities and skills within our community. Terry Kelly will be joining in the celebrations once again, this time by helping CCB open White Cane Week 2007 on the steps of Parliament Hill. Terry will also be putting on his ever-inspiring performances at a number of locations in and around the Nation’s capital throughout the week. The Council is committed to managing the Week as a public awareness program and is seeking corporate support to cover its costs. I look forward to an exciting week this February. I know the CCB members and volunteers will again do a fantastic job of raising the awareness of the blind and visually impaired to the public. So let’s get out there and make a difference, let our abilities shine through and above all else, have fun! Harold Schnellert National President Canadian Council of the Blind WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 5 The Canadian Council of the Blind moves Forward at the 2006 National Convention BY MIKE POTVIN, EDITOR T he 2006 Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) National the document. Since the Convention, the government has approved the CCB bylaw. This is great news for the CCB on many levels, including making the CCB the largest organization of the blind and visually impaired in Canada. “It is wonderful news that the Federal Government has approved our new By-Laws,” states Harold Schnellert, CCB President. “Congratulations to all Delegates at the CCB National Biennial Convention, who reviewed, discussed and approved 6 WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 From page 6 CONGRATULATIONS Recreational Programs, Advocacy, Public awareness and Membership Governance. It was announced at the Convention that CCB would be donating a cheque for $1400 to Operation Eyesight Universal (OEU). CCB would like to take this opportunity to thank all the chapters and individuals who helped to raise these funds. As a point of interest, it should be noted that OEU matches every dollar CCB donates, then in turn the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) matches every dollar OEU contributes. Therefore, the $1400 donated becomes $5600 in the end, so CCB really stretches their dollar by donating to OEU. Although CCB business kept everyone very busy at the Convention, participants found time to meet new friends and have a little fun during the sightseeing tour and Canada Trivia night. Adaptive technical equipment displays were also set up in the hotel lobby, and were well received by the Convention participants. The official closing banquet featured guest speakers Jim Sanders, CEO of CNIB, Chris Gray, President of the American Council of the Blind, as well as the Mayor of Powell River. Overall, the planning and hosting of the Convention was a great and positive experience and a base to build from for the future. A new Executive was elected at the 2006 Convention, and thus, congratulations are in order. Congratulations to Harold Schnellert, who was elected by acclamation to serve another term as CCB National President. Congratulations to Norman A. Lyons who was elected by acclamation as 1st vice-President. Congratulations to Louise Gillis who won her election for 2nd Vice-President. SPECIAL THANKS Thank you to Carl Cartier, past 1st Vice-President, for your hard work, dedication and support. Thank you to Elizabeth Mayo, past 2nd Vice President, for your dedication and support to the Council as well. Thank you to Past-President John Rempel for doing an exemplary job as Chairman of the National Convention. CCB would like to give special thanks and recognition to Geraldine Braak and her support crew for the hosting of the Convention. They did an excellent job and worked tirelessly around the clock to ensure events ran smoothly. Geraldine is very lucky to have such strong support from the friendly community of Powell River. A warm thank you also goes out to the hotel and its staff who were very accommodating and helpful to all participants. CCB CCB NOW LARGEST ORGANIZATION FOR THE BLIND IN CANADA In January 2007, the federal government approved the new CCB bylaws which were passed at the National Convention last October. Membership is now automatic for every person in Canada who is legally blind or vision impaired. The CCB truly is the VOICE OF THE BLIND® and effectively represents over 600,000 blind and visually impaired persons across the country. The new bylaw allows all blind and visually impaired persons to take advantage of all CCB programs, and for those who desire a more active role for voting, a nominal annual membership fee is paid to the national office. “This is quite an achievement”, notes Harold Schnellert who was re-elected president at the convention. However, Mr. Schnellert cautions “the change gives the CCB the added responsibility to make sure “The Council” meets the needs of all the blind and visually impaired people – this is an enormous task for the organization. A tremendous amount of credit must go to Geraldine Braak and her committee as well as to past president John Rempel who guided the passage of the bylaw at the convention. ” Not only has the size of the CCB changed, but the new bylaw permits a re-structuring of the divisions and chapters to accommodate the advances of modern communication in the 21st century. States Mr. Schnellert “There will be a huge and daunting yet exciting challenge in the months ahead for everyone at the CCB, particularly the present board of directors who must address the re-structuring and new protocols for governance.” WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 7 8 WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 A SUMMER OF OPPORTUNITY: An Overview of the 2006 Canadian Council of the Blind Summer Student Program BY MIKE POTVIN, EDITOR T he year 2006 marks the beginning of what the Canadian and the challenges it faces. A significant aspect of the program was to enable the youth to adjust to life in a working situation that involved communication with persons from the local community. The hopes are that the blind and vision-impaired youth hired will benefit from learning a number of transferable work-place skills that will assist them in their quest for meaningful, full-time employment. The students were also introduced to other tasks within the local office and community to increase their areas of understanding of the Council WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 9 From page 9 Novartis Ophthalmics leads in the treatment of Age-related Macular Degeneration Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of central vision loss and is the leading cause of severe blindness in Canada for people over the age of 50. Vision loss associated with AMD has been shown to significantly decrease quality of life. Everyday tasks such as driving and walking can be severely affected. Awareness of the condition and treatment in the initial stages of the disease are essential for patients to take the necessary steps to halt progression of AMD. Vision loss from AMD occurs in two forms: dry and wet. The dry form is associated with atrophic cell death of the central retina and central vision is lost gradually. The wet form is caused by growth of abnormal blood vessels under the central part of the retina or macula. These vessels leak fluid and blood and cause scar tissue that destroys the central retina. This results in rapid deterioration of sight over a period of weeks to months. Untreated, the majority of eyes affected with wet AMD will become functionally blind within approximately two years. Novartis Ophthalmics, is committed to the development and marketing of innovative products to improve the ocular health of all Canadians. The Company is focused on pharmaceuticals that assist in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, eye inflammation, dry eye and ocular allergies. Novartis Ophthalmics’ vision is to deliver the next generation of breakthrough ophthalmic products to doctors and their patients. Novartis Ophthalmics’ products are available in more than 110 countries worldwide, with the Canadian office located in Mississauga, Ontario. officially meet in person, to share ideas and to promote dialogue between each other. This dialogue between the students will continue to be promoted through an MSN chat-line which was set up during the summer months. The chat-line provides the students with a costeffective and accessible avenue for networking and continued conversation. Students talked on the chat-line once a week during the program, and have agreed to continue the conversations during the school year, although on a less frequent basis. The Summer Student Program introduced the students to networking and resources that have placed them on a more equal plane with their sighted peers. “Working for the Canadian Council of the Blind has placed me on an equal playing field by giving me a similar work experience as my sighted peers both financially and in gaining work experience.” states Chelsea Mohler, 2006 Summer Student , Brantford, ON. “This program has helped me to become familiar with resources that are available to me that I didn’t know about before.” states Dawn Billingsley, 2006 Summer Student , Hamilton, ON. “I was reminded that as visually impaired individuals, we need to approach our lives with an open mind and look for solutions rather than dwell on problems.” says Dean Pucsek, 2006 Summer Student, Ottawa, ON. The 2006 CCB Summer Student Program was a very successful endeavour. The program clearly made a difference in the lives of the 9 students by giving them a chance to showcase their abilities in the workforce. This just in; New Canadian Council of the Blind Youth Chapter Announced! The CCB Connected Youth Chapter of the Maritimes is the latest youth chapter to join the Council. The Halifax, Nova Scotia-based chapter is proud to include Paralympic medalist, Amy Alsop, amongst their growing ranks. The foundation for this new chapter was two students who took part in the 2006 CCB Summer Student Program, which employed nine blind and visually impaired students from across Canada. “After doing some research, we found there was a lack of clubs for blind youth in the Maritimes. Instead of complaining about it, or waiting for someone else to do it, we did it ourselves, and it got done.” states James Shepard, 2006 summer student , Halifax, NS. The youth chapter, which was founded September 9, 2006, is an excellent example of just one of the positive spin-off’s of the Council’s first-ever summer student program. “Through out this three month period, we assembled a chapter of the CCB designed specifically for blind and visually impaired WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 youth in Halifax.” says Mr. Shepard. The chapter includes youth from local schools and Universities who are interested in advocating for the rights of blind and visually impaired youth in Canada. Louise Burley, CCB member and supervisor for the summer student program, has been instrumental in getting the chapter off the ground. “I showed them how the CCB voting process works, and how to pass a motion; basically the business aspects of running a chapter.” states Mrs. Burley. “The rest I will be leaving in their capable hands.” CCB has recently begun to emphasize the importance of youth membership. “Youth are the future of our organization.” says Harold Schnellert, CCB President. “The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.” And who knows, with such a dynamic, young group in Atlantic Canada, the CCB may already have a future President amongst their ranks. CCB 11 DRIVING IN HITTING A GOLF BALL PROPERLY IS DIFFICULT ENOUGH. DOING IT WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO SEE WHERE YOU’RE HITTING IS IMMEASURABLY HARDER. LAST SUMMER SEVERAL DOZEN BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED GOLFERS FROM AROUND ONTARIO TEED OFF AT A LOCAL COURSE PROVING THAT THE GAME ISN’T THE EXCLUSIVE DOMAIN OF THE VISUAL. BY SCOTT RADLEY, THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR T he swing is quite lovely. It starts with a smooth, controlled windup. A strong but not looking-to-send-the-ball-into adifferent-area-code pivot follows. And the follow through is excellent. As a package most golfers would be happy with it. Problem is the guy attached to the club does what we all do too often. The instant his seven-iron makes contact with the ball, his head doesn’t stay down, but jerks up to watch the launch. That one movement turns his Mona Lisa into a Velvet Elvis that slices angrily off to the right. The air under his breath turns a mild shade of blue for a moment. Not because he gave in to the temptation to watch what he thought was going to be the majestic flight of his ball but because it was so senseless-- Gary Saxon is completely blind. “Oh, I call myself #$!!&$% three, four, five times a round,” the east end resident says, laughing at the insanity of the problem. This day he did his muttering at Chippewa Creek as one of about 30 players competing in an Ontario Visually Impaired Golfers tournament. The 60-year-old retired teacher is not only OVIG’s membership coordinator, but one of a growing group of visually impaired duffers who are taking up the sport that’s been around forever but that’s always seemed to stay in the shadows. Legend has it that in 1937 at the Waterdown Golf Club, a Hamiltonian named Charlie Toot played the first-ever round of blind golf. He’d been encouraged to give it a try by a coach of blind bowlers named Jock McCallum who thought golf could work for those without sight. Turned out he was right. Nine years later, Toot won the first international competition ever, shooting a 61 over nine holes. While that score was hardly anything to be ashamed of, two more Hamiltonians would come along and obliterate the mark over and over again. Claude Pattemore, who lost his sight in a construction explosion, won the Ontario Blind Golfers’ Championship 14 times and the Canadian crown 12 times. He was the first Canadian to break 100 and on his best day, shot an 86. And Nick Genovese, whose sight was claimed by a welding accident, won the Ontario title 19 times and added six Canadian 12 WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 THE DARK Championships. Both men died within the past year or so. For a number of years, the city officially encouraged the sport by offering a grant that gave blind golfers the opportunity to play at Chedoke free. That was cut off five years ago. “It’s unfortunate because some of the guys really relied on it,” Saxon says. Considering that all the usual rules of regular golf apply the only exceptions being, having the coach alongside, being able to set up the club in a bunker and picking up the ball after reaching five-over-par on any hole. The loss of that practice time hurt. Not only do blind players naturally cover the course a bit more slowly -- more than a few walk holding their club face and using the shaft as a cane to feel their way along. They need a sighted coach to accompany them to help with direction, distance and spotting the ball. Those folks aren’t always easy to find and that cuts down on playing opportunities. And if you think you need time on the course to improve your game, throw on a blindfold sometime and see how much work you’d need to improve without being able to see what you’re doing. Canadian golfing savant Moe Norman used to tell people to close their eyes while practicing to develop muscle memory and eliminate reliance on vision. While it might have worked for him, for us mortal golfers, it’s a thoroughly discombobulating experience. It’s not until the lids are down that you realize how much of the game is visual: aiming at a target, depth perception, making the club face connect with the ball. Just check any golf magazine or watch the Golf Channel for a few minutes and you’ll realize that nearly every teaching aid relies on sight. In the dark, you’re suddenly aware of every movement and you realize what an odd sequence of events makes up a golf swing. Then there’s the whole issue of self-confidence. Who’s watching? How idiotic is it going to look to take a huge cut and miss everything? Or worse, to catch the ground a foot before the ball and jar your body so hard your spleen ricochets off your kidney? And aiming seems impossible. There are just too many variables that can affect the flight path of a ball without the ability to compensate or make adjustments in mid-swing. “You do have some benefits though,” Saxon says. “You don’t have to go into the woods to get your ball. You send your coach.” It’s one of plenty of jokes he cracks about his game. Saxon says they’d hold the tournament at night if they could get better rates except that the darn coach has to see the ball. Sure the game WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 is frustrating, but he laughs because it’s fun, too. Born with only 10 per cent vision, Saxon spent most of his life seeing little. Swimming underwater with his eyes open is how he describes what he could see before the last light went out altogether about a decade ago. He was an athlete who ran and participated in sports, but never golfed even though his dad was an avid player. He didn’t even take it up when his son won the junior championship at Kings Forest. “Golf was something that was, like, five hours,” he says. “I could go out and run 20 miles in that time.” But there was more to it than that. Until about 10 years ago, Saxon did all he could to hide his condition. Many of his students never knew he couldn’t see. He didn’t want to be perceived as being different but eventually, keeping it secret became impossible. So, five years ago, as part of a greater decision to get on with life as a blind man, he took up the game. These days he gets out eight or nine times a summer but wants more. The feeling of a good shot is just too appetizing. With no way to admire his shot visually, he gets his feedback by touch and sound. The two senses tell him instantly when he’s caught a good one. “The contact of the ball on the club doesn’t feel hard or sound tinny,” he says. “You just hear “smack”, and you know you’ve got a hold of it.” Other blind golfers have even more refined senses of hearing and touch. During a recent day on the course, Brantford comedian and avid golfer Gord Paynter correctly identified the distance and direction of not only his own shots, but those of others, simply by the noise they made. “It’s feel, sound, balance, tempo, rhythm,” Paynter explains. Standing on the driving range of the satellite course at Highway 20 and Mud Street -- a place once owned by Claude Pattemore, Saxon picks up his five-wood, gets some help to set his club, and swings, “that one felt nice,” he says. At almost the same moment the words tumble out of his mouth, the ball makes landfall. Three bounces later, it stops. It’s sitting just past the 200-yard marker after a perfectly straight flight. His head is still down. CCB 13 National of Canadian CanadianCouncil Councilfor forthe the Nationalisisaaproud proud sponsor sponsor of Blind’s White Cane Blind’s CaneWeek Week2006. 2007. Released from hospital, he came up with the idea of painting his cane white so it could be easily seen at night. The advantages of the white cane soon became apparent as people alerted to Biggs’ blindness assisted his movements with guidance and by warning him of obstacles. Biggs’ innovation soon became an internationally accepted symbol of blindness. Today, nine provinces have legislation which restricts the use of the white cane to those who are legally blind. Since 1946, The Canadian Council of the Blind has designated the first full week of February White Cane Week® in Canada. The objective of White Cane Week is education. Each year a theme and/or slogan is adopted for White Cane Week which serves to focus public attention on a facet of blindness and visual impairment. The CCB’s 70- plus clubs from coast to coast give the campaign an effective national base. Our grass roots network provides local support for the broader national awareness campaign. From the first ever White Cane Week, with only a handful of individuals who were blind or vision impaired participating, White Cane Week has grown to become a national network of special events, hands-on demonstrations, open houses, and tours. Over the years, the White Cane Week program has evolved to reflect the changing situations of people who are blind and visually impaired. In early years, White Cane Week was used to draw attention to concerns for good rehabilitation and blindness prevention. More recently, White Cane Week events have emphasized the equal capabilities and talents of people who are blind and vision impaired. CCB The Canadian Council of the Blind: Our Mandate The CCB’s primary mandate is to act as the voice of the blind. This requires us to focus on activities that express the concerns and interests not just of its membership but of also its stakeholders—the blind and visually impaired. CCB activities fit into five broadly defined categories. 1 Peer support • assisting other persons who share the same disability and encouraging their independence. 2 Advocacy • participating in activities designed to improve availability and /or accessibility of services of all kinds. 3 Public Awareness • activities designed to increase the general understanding of the challenges faced by the stakeholders and their successes in responding to them. 4 Learning • developing opportunities for stakeholders to gain the confidence, knowledge and skills that give greater access to learning opportunities. 5 Empowerment • through the sense of association increase the capacity to work for the stakeholder’s ‘public good’. Participation in local community events, both as citizens and as disabled persons, and interaction with the providers of important services [airport authorities, educational institutions, etc.] encourage and enable full participation in Canadian society. The sense of independence enables greater interaction which in turn creates further interaction. The CCB is active in expressing the needs of its stakeholders in government policy and program development processes. Availability, appropriateness, accessibility of information services, of transportation systems, of educational services, of pensions are the types of needs and concerns that engage the CCB. The CCB is a membership-based organization. Members are currently those who are blind and visually impaired and pay the $10 membership fee. Members participate as volunteers in the peer support, advocacy and educational activities of the CCB. Members manage the affairs of their chapters consistent with the constitution, by-laws and operating guidelines of the Canadian Council of the Blind. Members may be elected to executive functions locally, provincially and/or nationally. They also serve on various committees at these levels. WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 19 RoyTofilovskiB.A.,LL.B.,LL.M. The CCA will assist the CCB in developing manuals for coaching and training. The responsibility of the CCB will be to get the message out to the blind and visually impaired community to say that there is a unique opportunity to be active and enjoy the sport on a recreational level. One of the main catalysts to reach this agreement was based on the success of the past 2 national blind curling bonspiels with a national blind curling championship to be held during White Cane Week 2007. “These bonspiels have shown the blind and visually impaired as well as the sighted community that the emphasis of the CCB is on ability and not disability.” states CCB president Harold Schnellert. Special credit must be given to Sport Canada, Danny Lamoureux of the CCA and Barry Winfield of the Canadian Paralympic Foundation who have worked behind the scenes to make this agreement happen and to Michael Hayes of the Ottawa Blind Curlers who has been relentless in promoting blind curling. By the end of White Cane Week 2007, the CCB and CCM hope to have reached an agreement that will provide 10,000 members of CCB with refurbished laptop/desktop computer systems. The computer systems would come complete with a package of software to assist low vision or blind members with computer applications and with access to the internet, all at an extremely low cost. The initiative will also develop a new TechMentor program that would recruit, train and support an estimated 5000 IT and computer volunteers to provide one-to-one software and computer training for CCB members at each-and-every CCB chapter across Canada. The initiative plans to begin operations in the Ottawa region, before moving on to the National level. CompuCorps Mentoring is a registered charity located in Ottawa that provides assistance with computers and technology to charities, nonprofits, and CED organizations in Canada. CCM enlists IT professionals to volunteer in the community using unique approaches to help a wide range of charities from environmental groups to kids groups. These IT professionals help to apply appropriate in-depth technical solutions so that people in nonprofit organizations can use technology more effectively and efficiently as they work to make the world a better place. The students will be working with the CCB to develop a strategic marketing plan. The students are part of the Student Marketing Plan Co-Op Project, which has been in place at the College since 2005, and has received high praise from former clients. The project provides students and the CCB with a mutual opportunity to collaborate on the development of a marketing plan package for the organization. The project will include the establishment of target markets, research regarding competition assessment, and a complete media plan. Research is done through focus groups, interviews and surveys. The 16 week project will take place from January 2007 to April 2007, and involves 3 teams of 6 students. The students are backed by a professional Algonquin College Faculty Advising Team. CCB W hite Cane Week Magazine 2007 provides valuable support to White Cane Week in a variety of ways. With a circulation of 10,000 the magazine reaches CCB members all across the country. We encourage CCB members to distribute the magazine to local eye doctors and health practitioners, getting information into the hands of those who may benefit from it most. The magazine serves as a Resource Guide, listing contact information of hundreds of organizations both for, and of, the blind and visu- ally impaired. I invite you to browse through the guide; you may be surprised just how much is available to you. The magazine gives CCB an opportunity to thank our supporters, as well as give an annual report on happenings within the Council. I would also invite you to read up in this issue on new CCB By-laws approved by the Federal government recognizing CCB as the largest organization for the blind in Canada. Last, but certainly not least, the articles in the magazine are a vehicle to showcase the abilities of blind and visually impaired Canadians. In fact, the articles themselves are a testament to the abilities of the blind, as most of the articles are written and edited by visually impaired staff writers. I would like to invite you to send in stories, with the possibility of including them in next year’s magazine. These stories can be features on local events during White Cane Week 2007, or success stories of blind and visually impaired individuals. Stories can be sent to Mike Potvin at [email protected] Thank you and I hope you enjoy the read! Teams from across Canada attended the event at the Ottawa Curling Club, February 5 to 11, for an amazing week of top flight curling competition. The week wrapped up with the Curling Awards Banquet, which included guest Speaker Cathy Moore, CNIB Director of Consumer and Government Relations. 2006 WCW Blind Bonspiel Final Standings: Congratulations to all! 1. WEST TORONTO, ON M9A 1B7 Merck Frosst leads fight against GLAUCOMA At Merck Frosst, patients come first. Merck Frosst Canada Ltd. is a resesarch-driven pharmaceutical company. For more than a century, we have discovered some of the most important medicines that change our daily lives. Our research efforts span many spheres including glaucoma. Our scientists have been involved in research in ophthalmic diseases for over 25 years. In the 1970s, Merck Frosst scientists discovered timolol maleate, the first beta-blocker medication used in the treatment of glaucoma. This is an eye disease caused by increased pressure within the eye. It effects 1 in 100 Canadians over 40. Early diagnosis, through regular eye exams by an eye care professional, may prevent permanent damage to the eye. Our commitment to ophthalmic diseases extends beyond the research and development of new therapies. Through the Merck MectizanTM Donation Program®, established nearly 20 years ago, the Company provides its MECTIZAN® (ivermectin) tablets free of charge to people at risk of onchocerciasis (river blindness) in some of the poorest countries in the world. MECTIZAN® halts the progression towards blindness thereby dramatically affecting the quality and duration of life. Merck has donated more than 850 million tablets since the inception of this program. Merck will continue to donate MECTIZAN® for as long as needed, wherever needed, to fight river blindness as a public health problem. Merck Frosst is committed to discovering medicines that improve the quality of life for Canadians. As long as there is disease and suffering, we will continue our search. 416-236-1796 WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 55 Q&A ON THE RECORD WITH HAROLD SCHNELLERT, PRESIDENT OF THE CANADIAN COUNCIL OF THE BLIND As President of the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB), Harold Schnellert is a dedicated leader and a hard-working advocate for blind and visually impaired Canadians. During his term as President thus far, Mr. Schnellert has worked tirelessly to change what it means to be blind in Canada. Recently re-elected for a second consecutive two-year term at the 2006 CCB National Convention, Mr. Schnellert plans to continue his quest to raise public awareness to the Council, increase membership and continue to support blind and visually impaired Canadians. Here, Mr. Schnellert submits to a litany of queries regarding the direction of CCB and issues relating to the blind in Canada. are Advocacy, Blind Awareness, Chapter Assistance, Membership Development, and Peer Support. What is your role in CCB? In my position as president I would like to see each division and chapter take an active role in advocacy. If we do not advocate for ourselves, who will? I am presently the National President of the CCB, re-elected for a second two-year term at the recent National Convention. As president of the organization, I am the Chairman of the National Board of Directors, which includes an elected representative from each division. In Board matters I do not have a vote except as a tie-breaker. I am ex officio chair of all national board committees. In what direction do you see the CCB heading? CCB must continue building its membership base, which must include blind and low-vision seniors, working-age and young adults, and youth. We must give all members the opportunity to serve and work for and with blind/low-vision people in their local communities, whether or not they hold CCB memberships. In your opinion, what CCB programs are most important for the upcoming year? The programs which are important to the CCB in the next year 56 If we truly want to “Change what it means to be blind” we must diligently work at increasing our membership, which is the base of the organization Membership growth is the key to a healthy future for our organization. The youth and young adults are essential to the CCB’s future success. Yes, we will always need the mature adults to lead and guide; however leadership roles undertaken by the younger generations will help develop the CCB to fulfill its mandate into the future. How do you see the CCB fitting into the lives of the blind and visually impaired? Firstly, the CCB must help and support its members. It must mobilize them to become active in support of the needs and issues affecting them. We must develop the tools to make this happen. Each member must take an active role in making this a reality. 4 WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 From page 56 How do you see the CCB fitting into the lives of blind and visually impaired Canadians? The CCB is the vehicle or the means by which blind and visually impaired individuals may express their needs and concerns. The visually impaired as a group needs the resources of the CCB, and in turn the CCB needs their support. through advocacy, through the media, and peer support within chapters and the development of new chapters across the country were all highlights of 2006. Do you feel there is an opportunity for CCB to collaborate with CNIB? How important is it to involve blind and visually impaired youth in CCB? There is not only an opportunity to collaborate with the CNIB, but a need to do so, as they are the national service provider for and to the blind and visually impaired in Canada. It not only behooves us to collaborate with them, but with other organizations who work with, for, and in support of the blind community. We are not an island unto ourselves. The blind and visually impaired youth are the CCB of the future. It is extremely important that we garner their support and commitment, empowering them to perform significant roles, preparing the CCB for the second decade of this century with them leading the way. CNIB provincially and nationally has the peer support system in place for their clients. Many of their clients are members of the CCB. CNIB has always been and still is the source through which we obtain many of our potential members, and through collaboration that process can be simplified and enhanced. What did you see as highlights for CCB in the last year? How is CCB “Changing what it means to be blind”? CCB had an extremely successful White Cane Week celebration. The CCB is allowing its membership to fulfill their roles as participants in what the organization is doing on their behalf at the national, divisional and chapter levels. We are doing this by giving them a voice and decision making powers at all levels of the CCB. The role of the membership must broaden and become more inclusive in the future to keep the CCB as a vibrant support to all blind and visually impaired in Canada.CCB CCB held an equally successful National Blind Curling Bonspiel. During the year there was excellent public awareness of the CCB The Canadian Council of the Blind on behalf of it’s over 65 coast to coast chapters and more than 600,000 blind and vision impaired members wishes to express its special thanks and appreciation to the sponsors of White Cane Week 2007. ™ WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 57 CAROLYN MCDONALD MORTGAGE SPECIALIST – FOR ALL YOUR MORTGAGE NEEDS • Extremely competitive rates. I would like to see increased membership in all divisions, and the re-addition of a Quebec Division should we be able to locate a base group to work with. More chapter development in present member cities and development of chapters in other cities which are not part of the CCB family. I am pleased that we adopted a new set of bylaws; positive change developing within “The Council” once the bylaws become effective will be witnessed. Better communications between all levels of the CCB. We are one large family, not splinter groups Harold Schnellert at a Flying Father’s hockey game face-off, during White Cane Week 2006. standing alone. More cooperation with other chapters in cities where additional chapters have been developed. My favourite hobby is reading good books on tape, and a close second is watching the Blue Jays, NHL and CFL games on TV or listening on the radio to games. My favourite movies are two old ones, “The Field of Dreams” and “The Sound of Music”. I enjoy a variety of books and authors. The statement “Ability, not Disability” to me, means that, regardless of a physical or sensory disability, I can do most of the things that anyone with full sight could do. We all have different interests; however we need the opportunity to do the best we can at what we do, and the opportunity to accomplish what we want to. Norman Lyons, 1st Vice-President My goals within the CCB are to see that the organization becomes a multi – purpose, diversified organization in the community from coast to coast, taking its rightful place and be recognized for who we are and what we do. Regarding sports teams, I am a homer so yes, The Winnipeg Blue Bombers is my favourite team and yes, they will be better next year! Doug Barry should be CFL Coach of the Year! I would also like to spread the message that as a member you have a bigger voice as part of a unit. A third goal is to increase membership, more youth members. When I hear the statement, “Ability, not Disability”, I believe that, everyone has abilities, of some nature that people see before what you yourself might feel is a “disability”. I believe that whoever you may be, there is something that distinguishes you from all others, which is your ability. I believe that no one has a “disability” because his or her “ability” shines through. WHITE CANE WEEK 2007 CCB Board of Directors 2007 Louise Gillis, 2nd Vice-President Louise Gillis with her Grand Niece, Mikaela Sievers, at their old family home in Skye Glen, Cape Breton. Linda Sobey, New Brunswick Division Representative Sandra Poirier, Prince Edward Island Division Representative Within the CCB, I would like to see that when you say “Canadian Council of the Blind”, people wouldn’t mistake it for the “Canadian National Institute for the Blind”. It would be nice to find a way to distinguish between both organizations. My favourite hobby is knitting baby sets, slippers, hand towels, dishcloths and Afghans. My favourite sports Sandra Poirier, busy knitting a pair of team is the Toronto Maple slippers, at the Miscouche Rec. When I think of “Ability, not Disability”, it reminds me that I can still do the same things that I used to do but in a different way. I try not to get too frustrated when I have a hard time reading things, and my magnifier comes to the rescue every time for me! Since my vision loss in 1990, I have been involved with CCB beginning with being a member; Club President; Club Secretary/Treasurer; Division Board Member; Division President; and National Board Member representing the CCB National on the World Blind Union. All of this has been a learning process and I feel that I have contributed in various ways. In the future, I would like to see the CCB accelerate into the number one Organization for the Blind and I believe we are on the right track to accomplishing this endeavour. I would like to be there for the Blind all over the country as well as for all over the world, to assist in any way that I can. Horseshoes and Washer Toss are two things I like to do. My favourite Author is Danielle Steele. I can get the books in large print and I do enjoy reading when I have time- like on the plane when traveling for CCB or in Doctor and Dentist Offices while waiting for appointments. The fall is one of Central NB White Cane Club Charter, April 27, 1994. my favourite times of the year along with spring when everything is beginning to bloom, etc. And of course Christmas is a wonderful time for family and friends and remembering the recent past, but most important, the birth of our Lord and Saviour. “Ability, not Disability”, to me means that we should use what ability we have to the best that we can do and not sit back and feel sorry for ourselves and let life pass us by just because we have little or no vision. It gives me hope and strength that there is much to be done to educate others and show them that because of vision loss, we are still able to be a good asset to society. Imagine a future where people around the world have healthy vision. Now, imagine the first steps of an infant viewed clearly through the eyes of her grandmother. These are the things that we picture while we define our role as a leader in ophthalmology. Our commitment to the treatment of ocular disease has been established through our glaucoma therapies, PrXalatan* and PrXalacom**, and is reinforced with the launch of our latest therapy, PrMacugen***, for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, and also through various educational and research initiatives. Our dedication to ocular health in developing countries is demonstrated by our involvement in the International Trachoma Initiative, whose goal is to eliminate this blinding disease. Moving towards tomorrow, our ongoing investments in research offer new promise in other areas of ocular disease such as diabetic retinopathy and further developments in treatments for glaucoma and macular degeneration. All of these efforts are driven by Pfizer’s commitment to the healthy ageing of Canadians and our vision of a future where better health is shared by all. © 2006 Pfizer Canada Inc.
