Confederate Trivia
by Georgia Fleming
1. At Cedar Creek, Confederate Lt. Gen. Jubal Early launched a surprise attack against the
encamped army of what Union general?
2. Senate Joint Resolution 23 posthumously restored the citizenship of Gen. Robert E. Lee.
It was signed by the President of the United States, who said, “General Lee's character
has been an example to succeeding generations, making the restoration of his citizenship
an event in which every American can take pride.” Who was the President?
3. Stonewall Jackson, in his report on the engagement in which this officer was killed, said
of him: “As a partisan officer I never knew his superior; his daring was proverbial; his
powers of endurance almost incredible; his tone of character heroic, and his sagacity
almost intuitive in divining the purposes and movements of the enemy.” Who was he?
4. Who led the raid on St. Albans, Vermont (the northernmost action of the war)?
5. What famous line, from an intercepted signal at Allatoona Pass, has been attributed to
Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman?
6. This Confederate Lieutenant General was victorious in the first day of fighting at Cedar
Creek, but his decision to halt the attack allowed Union forces time to regroup and led
ultimately to a major Union victory – who was he?
7. In the October 1861 agreement by which the Cherokee Nation agreed to supply ten
companies of mounted men to the Confederate Army, who signed on behalf of the
Cherokee?
8. Who was “The Black Knight of the Confederacy”?
9. General Beauregard used Quaker Guns as part of the ruse to cover his withdrawal from
Corinth, Mississippi, in 1862. What are Quaker Guns?
10. Who was the Union commander at Cedar Creek, who rode from Winchester to the battle
site to personally reorganize and rally his forces?
“To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans we will commit the vindication
of the cause for which we fought, to your strength will be given the
defense of the Confederate soldier’s good name, the guardianship of his
history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles
which he loves and which you love also, and those ideals which made
him glorious and which you also cherish.”
Lt. Gen. Stephen D. Lee
Commander General
United Confederate Veterans
New Orleans, Louisiana
