BMA Products, manufacturers of the B.K. Smith line of products was established in
1988 in Toowoomba, Queensland. Owner Bronte Smith worked with RM Williams on
his property near Toowoomba. During this time Bronte and RM worked on perfecting
leather care products for saddles and boots. Today the business has continued to
expand and improve the line of products, including leather conditioners, a leather wax
and Desert Cream moisturiser. The business is 100% Australian made and owned and
continues to operate in Queensland, Australia.

The Schrade Story
The Schrade (Old Timer) name has been around for over 100 years. Over the years
this brand has earned a reputation for toughness and reliability. In 2006 Taylor Cutlery
USA purchased the rights to the name and models. The Old Timer knives are now
manufactured with modern updated USA Machinery and upgraded components in their
factory which is now located in South East Asia. The Steel used in the Old Timer knives
is 440C High Carbon Stainless with a Rockwell hardness of 59-60. Taylor cutlery has
gone to great extremes to maintain and improve on the quality of their knives. They have
their own production control and the finished product is better than ever.

I have been making saddles for over 25 years now and have used leather from a number of Tanneries. I have
built saddles on Hermann Oak Leather for the last 12 years and will use no other leather due to the consistent weight, texture and colour. Most of my saddles are tooled or carved and Hermann Oak wets easily,
cases easily and gives good colour contrast to the finished work. I am yet to find another

Very often I am asked the question of leathers, and favorites amongst the many being tanned today. For me,
the question is pretty easy to answer. I have been using Hermann Oak for 30 years now and while I have on
occasion used skirting from other tanneries, none have compared to Hermann Oak. My shop has become
known as a shop producing high quality working saddles with ornate carved designs, and this is exactly
where the Hermann Oak product stands out above the rest. The leather wets and cases
well, cuts well and holds an impression that is superb with abundant color. I can consistently cut a complete saddle from 2 sides of leather with little or no problem. I like the consistency in grading from Hermann Oak product, and we find the sides to be very uniform in
thickness which makes blocking a saddle that much easier. But amongst all the traits that
I like about the Hermann Oak product, it’s the wetting and shaping aspect that appeals to
me the most. No matter if the leather is being wetted to prepare to carve, or if I am wetting
a full saddle seat for fitting, it will have a uniform feel once it is wet up.

eNGLISH REIN BACKS
Toowoomba Saddlery has now been appointed the sole Australian distributor for J & FJ Baker &
Co Tannery UK. J & FJ Baker & Co has been a tannery in England since Roman times. The long
tanning method has changed little over the centuries. The raw hides are soaked in lime where the
hair is loosened as the pores open. While still wet the remaining hair is scraped off before the hides
are placed in the first of the handler tanning pits. The hides are moved by hand every week for three
months into progressively stronger tanning liquors. These liquors are made by soaking oak bark in
Devon water to extract the tannins, the same chemicals that give red wine its distinctive flavour.
In the first few weeks, when the hides are in the weakest liquor, they need to be moved about, or
handled, to ensure an even permeation of tannins. The hides are tied to poles attached to frames.
The frames are connected to the waterwheel and the hides move to the ebb and flow of the river
Coly. After this the hides are ready to be placed in layer pits, where the hides rest in the thickest of
the tanning liquors until they are ready to come out for drying and rolling. In contrast with the speedtanning of chemical methods in which the natural weave is lost, this traditional method preserves
the natural weave and ensures long lasting materials. The pit tanned leather is then dressed using
traditional methods and materials to give extra tensile strength and longevity and a deep natural
lustre.

overseas under the label of Toowoomba Saddles.
We would like to advise you that these Saddles “are not” Toowoomba Saddlery Saddles.
All genuine Toowoomba Saddlery saddles are manufactured in Australia by Toowoomba
Saddlery. They will be stamped “Made in Australia” Toowoomba Saddlery along with a
name plate attached to the saddle......Not Toowoomba Saddles
Over the years we have seen many copies of our saddles (some being manufactured in third
world countries from inferior products) being offered for sale both here in Australia and
overseas. These copies can be stamped “ Australian Designed”, “Designed in Australia” or
just “Australia”
While there is nothing illegal about this practice it is just really “buyer beware”.
Remember: Toowoomba Saddlery is the ‘Innovator‘ not the Imitator.
Company’s will always be trying to copy the quality of the Toowoomba Saddlery range, but to
ensure that you are getting the genuine article before parting with your money be sure that it

How to measure your stock saddle
A) Measure length of seat from stitching on fore part (being the raised portion
between pommel and facing) to inside back seat.
B) Measure dip in seat by placing ruler or straight edge on Pommel and top of
cantle. Take measurement from this ruler to lowest point of seat.
C ) To measure all types of poley knee pads place ruler in front of knee pad,
take measurement from flap to highest point of knee pad.
D) To measure thigh pad take measurement from flap to highest point of
thigh pad at the back.
E) To measure length of flap, take length from stirrup leather bar to bottom of
flap.

We recommend that you oil your saddle on a regular basis. If the leather dries out
you risk decreasing the life of the product. Never use hot water to clean off grime.
Use tepid water, saddle soap and a soft cloth. Do regular gear checks on the girth and
girth points, stirrup leathers and bridles. Only use a reputable saddler for repairs. We

small aluminium plates. We can arrange to have these plates made for
you or you can supply your own.

We can cut leathers such as Chrome, Latigo, Belt Leather,
Tooling Leather, Bridle leather and more. (Excluding Old
World Russet due to the thickness of this leather) The

and 13/4”.

The Apollo Plus series is the next generation in coated webbing available. This is a quality
Australian Made product. The core of this webbing is made from a tightly woven polyester
and then coated with a satin finish copolymer to produce this unique webbing. This webbing
has a crease line down each side to provide that leather look.
This new series of web is thicker than the standard Apollo webbing. The thickness is 3.0mm.
This webbing retains it’s flexibility over a large temperature range and has increased abrasion
resistance and is UV Stabilized and has increased crack & tear resistance while maintaining a
leather like feel (not plastic).

Insurance

Orders
Garth Delbridge left school at the age of 14 to accept a saddlery apprenticeship with a local Toowoomba firm of
James Rogers and Sons. After completion of a five-year apprenticeship Garth left the saddlery industry to work as a
plant operator with the Main Roads Department and later as a fireman with the Toowoomba fire brigade.
This time away from the industry was not lost as Garth continued saddlery work at home after hours and on
weekends until it became obvious to Garth and his wife Sandra that they would have to become involved in the
industry on a full time basis.
Toowoomba Saddlery was founded in a small tool shed behind their home in Taylor Street Toowoomba in 1968.
In 1969 the business moved into small commercial premises in Anzac Avenue with a view to increasing their
manufacturing output for both the wholesale and retail saddlery markets.
To support the growing business in 1973, Garth actively pursued two directions of growth, distributorships and
export markets.
Following a trip to Singapore in 1973 which proved to be very successful, Toowoomba Saddlery’s business had
grown to the point where exclusive agents in 4 countries had been appointed and were now actively exporting to 12
countries on a regular basis.
As Toowoomba Saddlery grew it became obvious that because of the vastness and distance needed to be travelled
to promote our products, an aircraft was the answer, so in 1979 Toowoomba Saddlery purchased a new Cessna
aircraft and Garth then started to learn to fly to obtain his pilots license to enable Toowoomba Saddlery to service

rapid growth our present 1500 square metre office and warehouse complex was purchased at 266-268 McDougall St
Toowoomba. Then in 2008 Saw the addition of a 600 square metre mezzanine floor at their Toowoomba warehouse
for increased storage area.
The quest for new products and continuity of supply of established products in the early 1990’s saw Toowoomba
Saddlery move into the direct importing of saddlery hardware and saddlery manufacturing products predominantly
from South East Asia. Leather is also imported from the USA, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.
Hermann Oak Leather Company of St. Louis in USA has appointed Toowoomba Saddlery as their sole distributor
for Australia and New Zealand for their very high quality skirting, tooling, latigo and bridle leathers.
Today Toowoomba Saddlery is one of the largest manufactures of Australian Made saddles and leather strapping
supplying over 1200 stores throughout Australia. We carry one of the largest range of saddlery hardware and
saddlery leather in Australia with an annual multi-million dollar turnover.
The success of Toowoomba Saddlery is in no small part due to the progressive attitude, experience and loyalty
of the management and staff. This experience is invaluable to the ongoing development of new products and the
continuing high standard of products manufactured on a daily basis. Toowoomba Saddlery is now in its 44th year of
business.
The Company is solely owned and operated by the Delbridge Family with Garth & Sandra’s son Robert being
appointed as the Managing Director of the Company. Robert completed his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic with
the local Ford dealership, then joined Toowoomba Saddlery in 1990 and completed a 4 year apprenticeship as a
riding saddle maker and has been with the company ever since.
The increasing need for travel to remote locations has seen Robert obtain his pilot’s license to enable him to service
customers in remote areas of Australia.
Toowoomba Saddlery has distributors of their quality products as far out as Alice Springs, Katherine
Kununurra, Derby and Broome.
Toowoomba Saddlery strives to supply quality products at the right price in the quickest possible time.

TRADING TERMS AND CONDITIONS
All accounts are strictly nett 30 days from EOM.
Overdue Accounts
Once an account is overdue, No further goods will be supplied until the outstanding balance has been paid in full. An extended credit
charge of 3% per month will be charged on all overdue accounts.
Insurance
Insurance is the responsibility of the purchaser. All goods are deemed delivered upon despatch and you are advised to arrange your
own insurance. However, automatic transit insurance can be arranged if required, upon your written request.
Orders
Garth Delbridge left school at the age of 14 to accept a saddlery apprenticeship with a local Toowoomba firm of
James Rogers and Sons. After completion of a five-year apprenticeship Garth left the saddlery industry to work as a
plant operator with the Main Roads Department and later as a fireman with the Toowoomba fire brigade.
This time away from the industry was not lost as Garth continued saddlery work at home after hours and on
weekends until it became obvious to Garth and his wife Sandra that they would have to become involved in the
industry on a full time basis.
Toowoomba Saddlery was founded in a small tool shed behind their home in Taylor Street Toowoomba in 1968.
In 1969 the business moved into small commercial premises in Anzac Avenue with a view to increasing their
manufacturing output for both the wholesale and retail saddlery markets.
To support the growing business in 1973, Garth actively pursued two directions of growth, distributorships and
export markets.
Following a trip to Singapore in 1973 which proved to be very successful, Toowoomba Saddlery’s business had
grown to the point where exclusive agents in 4 countries had been appointed and were now actively exporting to 12
countries on a regular basis.
As Toowoomba Saddlery grew it became obvious that because of the vastness and distance needed to be travelled
to promote our products, an aircraft was the answer, so in 1979 Toowoomba Saddlery purchased a new Cessna
aircraft and Garth then started to learn to fly to obtain his pilots license to enable Toowoomba Saddlery to service
