Guild News circulation
rises again
Dear
Readers
By now I hope that the sun has come out to
play for at least a few weeks of the summer,
and that they have been profitable for you.
The warmer weather and the holiday season
traditionally encourages more clients through
your doors, as hems rise and bikinis make
their way out from the back of the drawer.
The need for silky smooth legs, toned
tummies and maximum hair removal means
that your expertise should be in high demand.
The professional skills and products, and thus
results, delivered by well trained therapists
stand head and shoulders above the ‘high
street’ brands available in supermarkets and
chemists, promising to get bodies
beach-ready. I know personally, that without a
professional wax, body polish and airbrush
tan, at the very least, I would have hit the
sands of Santorini looking, literally, like Snow
White.
And so this is how you should be marketing
your summer services this season - your
clients will experience results that are simply
better than anything they could achieve at
home. Of course, homecare to accompany
professional treatments is important, but let’s
face it, no unskilled client could get the same
results that, for example, your professional
waxing technique offers.
Despite the signs of the sun, you may be
finding business difficult at the moment. We
have all heard of the global credit crunch
(daily updates in the newspapers and on the
television are unavoidable), but this doesn’t
mean that this summer has to be a wash-out
for your salon. Yes we are all tightening our
belts but frugal management, sensible
marketing and continuing to offer exciting and
innovative treatments will ensure that you ride
any storm.
Best wishes,
Melissa Dennis

He-Shi launch new packaging
Euro Products recently celebrated the
launch of their new repackaged and
extended He-Shi Tanning range, at their
exclusive showroom in Moneyrea,
Belfast.
The showroom was bustling with
buyers for the three-step tanning
programme with its new contemporary
packaging, designed by Slater Design.
“The new look He-Shi has a very
modern and contemporary feel,” says
Hilary McMurray, founder of the
He-Shi Express Tanning range. “It has
been very well received by the trade
and public alike, and it was great to see
so many media and press visitors
present for the occasion.”

Flab-ulous!
Hertfordshire’s Marion White Hair and Beauty
has installed fitness machine Flabélos, which has
been proving ‘extremely popular’ with
customers.
The Flabélos machine works using plates that
send vibrations through different areas of the
body, causing muscles to expand and contract to
counteract the vibrations, which in turn tones the
muscles and burns fat.
The Marion White salon is primarily a hair and
beauty salon, but has broadened its services with
a sunbed and the Flabélos machine: “I find that
this really helps out our customer base and trade
has been getting better and better,” says Manager
Sabrina McColl. “We’ve had a lot of interest
from people of all ages.”
Nora Bode
on the box
The Nora Bode Maxi Lip Treatment received top
marks in a recent treatment trial on UK TV Style.
Entitled The Truth About Beauty, the magazinestyle programme put the treatment through its
paces over the course of four weeks, and under
the guidance of dermatologist Dr Tracy
Mountford.
The Maxi Lip treatment was preceded by a skin
analysis that checked for sun damage and looked
at the volume and general health of the lips, as
well as the surrounding skin. Dr Mountford noted
that the tone and texture of the skin had
improved, and that a ‘plumping effect’ was
evident.

As infection control becomes more
important for the beauty and health
industries, specialist equipment
manufacturer Beautelle has introduced a
new anti-MRSA upholstery vinyl for their
health and therapy equipment ranges.
The new Infection Control vinyl offers an
infection-proof additive which, according
to independent laboratory testing, is
effective at reducing the spread of bacteria
such as E.coli and MRSA.
The vinyl is being offered as standard in
Beautelle’s range of single colour ways, or

designs.

Diamond days
for
Carlton
The Carlton Group celebrates its 60th
birthday this year - and the family-run
company have put their success down to
always having ‘caring for their customers’
at the top of their agenda.
The company’s involvement in the beauty
industry began as a result of their good
working relationships with colleges - and
which led to the creation of their student
electrotherapy competition, SEBTA, in
2007.
Now in 2008, the Carlton Group continues
to offer colleges, salons and spas quality
British-made electrotherapy machines and
furniture - not just in the UK, but with
more than 20 worldwide distributors.
Happy Birthday Carlton!
Facing up to award number five
Anti-ageing and beauty clinic
Face It has been named as
Environ’s UK Salon of the Year
for the fifth year running.
Environ distributor Tracy
Tamaris presented the award to
owner Donna Gershinson and her
staff of four at a recent gala
awards event, held at the IIAA
conference in Berlin.
“Lots of people ask me, what’s
your secret?” says Donna. “It’s
about believing in the products
you use. My other message to
other salons is that continuing
education through courses and
reading books is essential. My
staff’s in-depth knowledge about
ingredients and how the skin
really works has empowered us
to help clients to really
understand their own skin.”

Healthy win for
Dermalogica
The global spa economy is
estimated to be worth over $250
million, according to a major
report unveiled at the 2008
Global Spa Summit in New York.
The Natural Health Beauty Awards, published by consumer
magazine Natural Health, has awarded Dermalogica the ‘Best
Skin Care System’ title for the third year running.
The first-ever Global Spa
Economy Report also found that
1.2 million workers were
employed in more than 71,600
spas worldwide during 2007.
More than 220 industry leaders
from around the world attended
the Summit in May.
“Dermalogica has been committed to the use of natural, nonirritating ingredients since its beginnings over 20 years ago,”
says Marketing Co-ordinator, Lucinda Townend. “To receive
such an overwhelming amount of awards from a publication
with the same ethical devotion to environmentally friendly,
results-driven products in the same way that we are is
incredible.”
Dermalogica also received an outstanding three other awards,
as well as seven ‘Highly Recommended’ nominations.

New report gets A+
peeling line
Phorest branches out
Scientists at the University of Michigan have reported that vitamin A can
assist in collagen repair, reducing the fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin
that are seemingly inevitable with age.
by mesoestetic
®
According to the report in the Archives of Dermatology, the researchers
analysed numerous studies appearing since the early 1990s, noting that the
breakdown of the skin’s structures, which usually start in our late twenties,
could be counteracted when healthy, new collagen growth was stimulated
by the application of topical vitamin A.
Environ’s Tracy Tamaris says the news reinforces the place for effective
levels of vitamin A in everyday skincare: “It is essential to protect damage
to DNA. We know that by topping up levels of vitamin A that are lost
daily, the skin takes on a healthier appearance.”
Enhancing the workforce
Natural Enhancement has
welcomed two new members of
staff to its London-based team.
Juliette Smith joins the company
as Business Development
Manager, providing support to
customers in the UK and Ireland.
After twelve years working with
leading cosmetic brands in New
Zealand, Juliette moved to London
to further her career, and has
experience in customer service and
business management roles.
Robert Norton with the Beauty Inc. team in Malta.
Phorest has announced their successful expansion into the Maltese market.
The Irish salon software company set up its first customer, Beauty Inc, in
June, plus an additional five salons in July.
“The Maltese market seemed a natural fit for us,” says Robert Norton,
Operations Manager for Phorest. “We have had a great reception to our
launch here.”
Phorest is now available in eight countries, and the company is looking to
sign up five more distributors around the world before the end of the year.

exfoliation
scrub
a
dub dub
by sarah dolman
Exfoliation might have
been unheard of thirty
or forty years ago
(unless you were a
geologist), but the
promise of beautiful,
renewed skin is just too
appealing for any body
in the Noughties to be
without its scrubbing
and sloughing routine.
26
GUILD NEWS
According to the International
Dermal Institute, we shed 19
kilograms of dead skin cells over
the course of an average lifetime
(most of this becoming household
dust!); but not all dead cells find it
easy to shed naturally from the
skin.
Instead, they cling to the intercellular glue
that holds skin cells together, giving skin a
grey and dull appearance. Exfoliation allows
younger and healthier cells to come to the
surface, resulting in improved skin tone and
texture, luminosity and improved
circulation.
Exfoliating treatments and products are
available in abundance, but it’s often
difficult for salon, Spa owners and mobile
therapists to know how to make the most of
treatments in their respective businesses.
Smaller salons and freelance therapists may
also feel they are unequipped for exfoliation
treatments - particularly the ‘messy’ ones
like body scrubs - without the use of shower
facilities within treatment rooms. However
this shouldn’t put you off - damp towels or
warm, heated mitts can be a good substitute
when no such facilities are available - and
will ensure you don’t miss out on
exfoliation’s profitability.
Here are Guild News’ top five reasons to get
to grips with exfoliation...
1. It stops tans going
streaky
“Spray tanning, like most services offered in
the beauty industry, is only as successful as
your preparation,” says Marie Hills,
Business Development Manager for
Sunjunkie. “We all talk about exfoliation
prior to a spray tan/beauty treatment, but do
we all emphasise the importance of
preparing the skin to ensure a perfect
result?”
It’s a dismal thought, but as therapists you
only have control over your client’s skincare
whilst they are in the salon - once out of the
door you have to hope they stick to the
homecare routines you have prescribed for
them!
Exfoliation will remove any patches of dry
skin that spray tan solution likes to stick to,
causing the dreaded streaking. It also means
that the solution will only attach itself to
healthy cells, producing a tan that lasts
longer and looks more even.
However, no matter how forcibly you
instruct clients to exfoliate before a spray
tan, it’s likely you will have experienced
more than one turn up for a treatment with
patchy, dry skin and even traces of
deodorants, perfume and body oils:
“You as the therapist are then often
blamed for the uneven results, even
though you might have asked your client
to prepare according to your instructions,”
says Britta Brooker of Wow Factor
Europe.
One way to avoid this situation is to offer
clients a salon exfoliation as part of a
spray tan treatment package - for a little
extra cost, clients can get super-smooth
skin, an even tan, and an extra bit of
pampering - and you can retain your
reputation for providing a good looking
tan.
Try some of these for inspiration . . .
Spray tanning brand Sienna X has
recently launched the new ‘Rough it up to
smooth it off’ Exfoliating Body Scrub, a
luxurious and gentle treatment to
effectively scrub away loose dead skin and
prepare any skin type for a deep and even
fake tan.
Made with a combination of natural oils,
plant botanicals, vital nutrients, mild
exfoliating particles and gentle cleansers,
the Scrub ensures optimal pH balance, and
is 100 percent paraben-free.
United Beauty’s Solglo® Pre-Tan Body
Scrub can be used to gently but effectively
exfoliate skin prior to a spray tanning
treatment. The small, gentle exfoliant beads
leave the skin feeling silky smooth - and
ensure an even and natural looking tan. The
delicate fragrance of lotus blossom will
also lift your clients’ spirits and leave them
feeling refreshed and energised!
Alternatively, to make the exfoliating
process quick, efficient and reliable,
Sunjunkie’s Pre Tan Wipes guarantee
removal of dead skin cells, old tired tans,
perfume, deodorants and any other residue
that may affect the end result of a
treatment. The wipes contain textured
fibres that cleanse, exfoliate and pH
balance your client’s skin, with the added
benefit of being 100 percent oil-free.
Last but not least, Tantrick, available from
Wow Factor Europe, have added special
skin penetrating ingredients to their new
Essence of Summer spray tanning
solution, to ensure that the tan “goes that
little bit deeper under the skin.” Along
with body exfoliation, the extra
moisturising agents ensure the tan lasts
longer and fades evenly.
2. It prevents pimples
Spots, blemishes and pesky pimples aren’t
just confined to the face - although sebum
production isn’t as prolific on the body,
many clients (both men and women) can
be plagued by them, especially on the
upper torso.
A surprising number of clients, in their
desperate attempts to get rid of
embarrassing blemishes, will be unaware
that simple, regular exfoliation can help
prevent them. Sensitively recommending
exfoliation treatments to clients, as well as
making promotional literature available,
can help promote your treatments, as well
as create some very happy customers.
Be wary in the case of extreme acne
though: “If you (or your clients) have acne
breakouts, never use a physical exfoliant
as it can aggravate the condition,
stimulating more oil production and
inflammation,” advises Sally Penford,
Education Manager for the International
Dermal Institute.
3. It can slow down the
ageing process
“All clients need to exfoliate, regardless of
age,” explains Russet Edgar, Guinot UK
Flagship Salon Manager. “Many older
clients think that their skin is too dry to
exfoliate, but they need to be advised that
exfoliation will actually help their dry skin
by encouraging skin cell regeneration.”
GUILD NEWS
27
Sadly, the older we get the slower the
process of cell turnover becomes, and the
dead skin cells begin to sit heavily on the
skin’s surface, giving it a dry and rough
appearance.
Clients of a certain age may not be used to
exfoliating regularly, in which case advising
them on the best way to integrate it into
their routines will improve their skin
condition greatly, and give an instant
age-lift.
If you have a large database of mature
clients, why not try marketing ‘anti-ageing’
body treatments; or holding an event to
encourage clients to treat their mothers or
grandmothers? Be aware however, that
some older clients may feel self-conscious
baring all in a body treatment, so make your
consultation process as simple and assuring
as possible.
4. It will do wonders for
your other treatments
An exfoliation treatment is a good, reliable
partner to almost anything and everything
your treatment menu offers. Massage,
complementary therapies, anti-cellulite or
body toning treatments . . . the list is
practically endless. Why? Simply because
exfoliation helps the healthy cells to absorb
the full potential of products and serums:
“If we do not exfoliate when we apply a
body moisturiser, we are basically
nourishing dead skin as opposed to allowing
it to sit on the new fresh skin, where it is
able to do its job properly,” says Daniela
Chandler, Director of Skincare at Pevonia
UK.
Sienna X’s ‘Rough
it up to smooth it
off’ Exfoliating
Body Scrub will
prepare any skin
type for a deep
and even fake tan.
Sally Penford, Education
Manager for the International
Dermal Institute, talks
exfoliation through the
ages . . .
“We need to start to exfoliate the skin in
the teens (after puberty); this is
primarily to prevent the dead skin cells
blocking the follicle openings, causing
congestion and leading to breakouts.
As we age into our mid-20s we need to
exfoliate to assist the skin’s natural
moisture levels, bringing fat juicy cells
from below.
5. It can improve your
retail sales
Once your clients have been impressed by
the results of an in-salon exfoliation
treatment, they’ll want to recreate the
process at home, and having a good range
of exfoliating products and accessories
(suitable for different skin types) will
expand your retail sales.
Areas like elbows, knees, ankles and
upper arms will benefit from an
application once or twice per week, but be
sure to explain the exfoliation process to
them to prevent them from overdoing it
and scrubbing away healthy cells!
In our 30s, skin cell turnover rate slows
down with age, leaving skin looking
dull and uneven, so sloughing needs to
be stepped up.
See below for a selection of exfoliating
products to choose from . . .
Then in our 40s and 50s, that renewal
assistance is still required but we must
be aware that skin may be more
delicate.”
Mechanical exfoliation involves some sort
of physical process, such as using a salt or
sugar scrub to manually ‘scrub away’ the
dead cells, or a loofah or brush to create
the same effect.
“Skin cells that lie beneath are living vibrant
cells that absorb the treatment creams, oils
or gels, and take the active ingredients to the
areas you need them to go,” adds Kim
Halford, founder of Simple Essentials.
Tailor treatments to the type of salon or Spa
you work in. If yours is a day Spa, then an
indulgent exfoliation treatment first thing
will enhance all the treatments that follow. If
you work in a salon, adding a 15-minute
exfoliation to a treatment will give that extra
bit of pampering, and ensure clients are
uber-impressed with the results.

percussion - and can be tailored for
individual treatments, including exfoliation.
The G5® offers variable electronic speed
control, and the use of manual effleurage in
between the mechanical movements keeps a
more personal and relaxing touch for the
client.
For an exfoliation treatment, all three
massage ‘techniques’ - percussion, vibration
and directional stroking - can be employed.
The directional stroking technique
simultaneously increases the venous flow
and nutrition to the skin and underlying
tissue, whilst stimulating the blood
circulation for a warming and soothing
effect on the body.
DiamondTome from Cosmeceuticals uses a
wand tipped with natural diamond chips to
vacuum remove dead cells in a sterile and
controlled manner. Resurfacing using a
DiamondTone wand gives similar results to
chemical peels and crystal
microdermabrasion, but without the adverse
effect of loose particles, irritation and skin
reaction that some people can experience.
The degree of effectiveness is controlled by
a widely adjustable vacuum in conjunction
with the varying coarseness of the
DiamondTome wands, for a painless yet
effective exfoliation treatment.
The new CACI Face Up treatment uses
orbital skin resurfacing technology to gently
exfoliate the superficial layers of the
epidermis, massaging the skin at the same
time. Specifically tailored to the needs and
sensitivity of each client, the handheld
treatment has five different grades of
coarseness, and when combined with the
system’s variety of rotational speeds, gives
the therapist unprecedented control and
precision over the depth of abrasion
delivered.

Light has always been of great interest to us;
from the moment our forefathers discovered
how to make a light bulb in the 1800s, right
through to the discovery of photosynthesis
and beyond, the potential power of light has
been explored and experimented with. But
the appreciation of light can be traced back
even further to ancient civilisations.
Imagine if you will, the ancient Egyptians bowing to
the Sun God ‘Ra’. According to their beliefs, Ra was
responsible for the creation of mankind. He rose out of
the churning sea of chaos that existed before creation
and helped to bring order by creating male and female
deities who, in turn, created more deities held
responsible for the creation of the physical world.
But despite our ongoing fascination with light, the
integration of light sources within health and beauty
care is still a relatively new idea. The first use of laser
light for cosmetic procedures, for example, was noted
to have taken place in the 1960’s where surgeons used
the light to remove birthmarks.
Since then technology has come on in leaps and
bounds, and our curiosity has lead to the discovery that
controlled light can be used to treat a number of
common skin complaints through a process called
‘Selective Photothermolysis’.
the science bit
Selective Photothermolysis describes the principle of a
targeted beam of light being used to selectively heat up
and damage a particular skin structure, without
damaging the surrounding tissue.
Once the damage occurs, the body’s automatic healing
response kicks in and effectively repairs both the
damage caused by the light source and the initial
problem thereby offering some level of cosmetic
improvement.
According to Sorisa’s book on Applied Professional
Electro-Cosmetic Therapy: “The three main elements
underlying correct Selective Photothermolysis are:
• A wavelength that ensures absorption mainly by the
target tissue (chromophore);
• An exposure duration equal to or shorter than the
cooling time of the target structures (the idea is to heat
the target tissue with one or more laser pulses, without
heating - or only minimally heating - the
neighbouring tissues, to ensure Selective
Photothermolysis), and
• Sufficient energy density to guarantee effective
thermal damage.”
This is where the introduction of wavelengths and
filters come into play. Wavelengths determine how
deep the light source can penetrate the skin, and can
therefore be predetermined to target what structures it
will hit, i.e. the stratum corneum, epidermis and
upper/lower dermis.
While lasers emit the so-called ‘coherent light’, e.g.
synchronised light waves of the same length, non-laser
photo devices, such as IPLs emit a broad spectrum of
wavelengths. And so to help improve targeting and
specificity, these devices are often fitted with
interchangeable filters to remove the unwanted
wavelengths and keep only those required to perform
the desired treatment.
be a colour chameleon
It is important to bear in mind that the wavelength and
frequency of the light source influences the colour we
see and as such, each of the seven colours contained
within the spectrum, e.g. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green,
Blue, Indigo and Violet, all have varying wavelengths.
Therefore coloured light therapy, using LEDs for
example, can also be an effective resource in offering
light-based skin treatments.

distributors of equipment from other countries, which
means that salons can be left high and dry if they
purchase a system from a company that loses its
distribution rights. As we manufacture our own
equipment this cannot happen with CACI International.
CACI International looks set to go from strength to

from traditional pampering beauty treatments. Instead,
clients are demanding treatments that deliver corrective
results without having to resort to surgery.

So what has made CACI International so successful?
CACI International’s Managing Director, Dean
Nathanson, explains that the company’s success is
due to a number of factors.
1. Salons are in business to make money and CACI
treatment systems have a proven track record for
generating fantastic revenue and so have become
the best selling systems in the U.K.
2. By offering a range of different finance options
CACI systems are affordable to all salons.
Incredibly, a salon needs to treat just one client per
week to be profitable.
3. We specialise in generating consumer awareness of
our treatments through intensive national PR and
celebrity focused media campaigns, which makes
CACI branded treatments the most sought after and
popular salon treatments available.
4. We invest heavily in research and development, so
we are able to offer unique technology and treatment
systems that truly deliver results.

light-based skin treatments
The trick with these systems is knowing
which colour is responsible for producing
certain effects. In The Nervous Girl’s Guide
to Nip & Tuck, Dr Patrick Bowler explains
the difference between the colours:
“The red and blue lights are used in skin
rejuvenation because they can penetrate the
skin without damaging its surface and
without any discomfort, to do good work on
its under-layers. Red is a skin rejuvenator. It
makes your skin look healthy, firmer,
plumper and glowing. Infrared light speeds
up healing, and blue light kills bacteria in
the skin, so it is used to treat spots.”
lighting the way
If you’re considering installing a light-based
system in your Salon or Spa, take a look at
some of the latest systems available...
The Athon pulsed light system, available
from Bretherton Therapy Products,
allows the treatment of wide areas with a
fast, safe and efficient performance.
Incorporating the latest generation, userfriendly application software, the Athon
enables easy and safe usage of the device
for therapists, and long-lasting results for the
client with no pain or discomfort.
The ergonomic probe is air-cooled and
removable from the device body, and there
is a security switch to prevent undesired
shots. Originally studied for epilation
applications, the system comes pre-set for
alternative solutions, such as vascular
treatments, acne, skin photo-rejuvenation
and others, but in some cases it may be
necessary to buy additional filters.
Crystal Clear’s Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
uses ‘Square Pulse’ Output technology to
ensure the light intensity is constant
throughout the entire pulse length. In
addition, the use of a multi-lamp
configuration means that hot spots are
eliminated from the skin treatment area, thus
ensuring controlled and even heating of the
target tissue.
Because it confines the heat in such a safe
and accurate way, the Crystal Clear IPL
system minimises the scattering of light and
allows a more uniform result, making it
ideal for the removal of age spots, uneven
pigmentation and thread veins.
Available from Enhance Beauty, the Duet
uses patented LHE (Light Heat Energy)
technology to reverse the effects of skin
damage caused through ageing, smoking
and prolonged sun exposure. Pigmentation,
scarring, broken veins, fine lines and
wrinkles can also be improved quickly,
safely and effectively.
The Duet comes with an optional carry case
enabling salons of any size as well as
mobile therapists to own such a system,
subject to HCC registration.
Alternatively, Lynton Lasers’ Luminette
Advance is an IPL system suitable for the
smallest treatment room and mobile
practitioners. Offering treatment for skin
rejuvenation, superficial pigmentation, veins
and acne, it’s a ‘mini toolbox’ aesthetic
system. With easy to use pre-sets and
Lynton’s ILG light delivery technology, the
system gives you more ‘punch’ for far less
‘pinch.’
The Athon pulsed light system,
available from Bretherton Therapy
Products, allows the treatment of
wide areas with a fast, safe and
efficient performance.
Or why not capture the beauty in laser
fractional rejuvenation treatments with
Lynton Lasers’ Mosaic system. Mosaic is an
advanced aesthetic solution for skin
rejuvenation, photo ageing, scarring,
wrinkles and melasma and offers dramatic
differences in just one treatment. As well as
minimal downtime, Controlled Chaos
Technology delivers a natural look with
randomised delivery of each micro-laser
beam and dual operation modes, which
allow both ‘scan’ and ‘stamp’ for fast and
accurate treatments.
Alternatively, the iPulse™ i400 is the latest
intense pulsed light (IPL) product in the
iPulse™ range from Cyden. The i400
combines the latest technological design
with a video touch screen and operator
friendly interface along with a host of other
special features, to help produce some of the
most effective clinical results on the market
today.
Crystal Clear’s Intense Pulsed Light
(IPL) uses ‘Square Pulse’ Output
technology to ensure the light
intensity is constant throughout the
entire pulse length.
iPulse offers both a Standard and
Professional mode, which makes the broad
range of treatments safe and repeatable.
Additionally, the iPulse square pulse
technology requires no extra filters or hand
pieces therefore reducing the cost of
ownership.
All iPulse™ practitioners are supplied with
a comprehensive four day training
programme with ongoing clinical support
and guidance. Continuous free training is
given through regional workshops providing
advanced theory and practical sessions.

that all IPL operators take two courses - the

Available from Acusystems, the EpiSoft
MD IPL has been designed specifically to
treat both Acne and Vascular Lesions, while
offering treatments for Photo Rejuvenation,
Tattoo Removal and Permanent Hair
Reduction.
The EpiSoft MD’s versatility in treating the
above conditions comes as a result of three
standard heads: 420nm / 560nm / 620nm
with an optional four more heads: 510nm/
640 nm/ 695nm and 750nm.
The EpiSosft MD can treat skin types I VI with a maximum output of 50J/cm2 and
150msec pulse duration making it very
versatile and safe for therapists to use.
Intense Age Defence, by Ellipse, has been
designed to prevent the signs of premature
ageing and rejuvenate the complexion,
leaving skin looking radiant, plump and
youthful.
Based on the application of a
photosensitiser spray and the use of noninvasive Intense Pulsed Light (I2PL), this
treatment from Ellipse visibly reduces the
appearance of facial lines and wrinkles by
boosting the natural collagen production in
the skin by up to 300 percent.
The treatment starts with the application of
the Intense Photospray every five minutes
for one hour. Specifically formulated by
Ellipse, the spray contains an active
ingredient, which creates a red pigment in
the skin and prepares the skin for the
absorption of light.
Following this, a low energy Ellipse IPL is
passed over areas of the face, causing a
chemical reaction with the active
ingredients in the Photospray - triggering a
natural cellular repair response, which leads
to an upsurge in the skin’s production of
collagen. It is this collagen production that
visibly fills wrinkles, rejuvenates and
smoothes - giving the appearance of a
younger, vitalised complexion.
Alternatively, Depilex’s L900 Intense
Pulsed Light hair removal and skin
rejuvenation unit can also be used to
successfully improve skin imperfections
such as wrinkles, pigmentation, open pores
and dilated capillaries.
A course of five to eight treatments must be
undertaken to achieve the best results,
usually with two to four weeks in between
each session. Effects of photo rejuvenation
are not definitive and therefore
maintenance treatments may be required.
The L900 offers an effective, reliable,
simple to use system at an affordable price,
with additional shot cards available to buy
as and when necessary.
Designed specifically for the Medi-Spa
environment and powered by elõs
technology, the eStyle, from Venus

skin textures and skin tones through a wide
range of treatment options.

Alternatively, Combination Omnilux
Phototherapy combines Omnliux plus, near
infra red light (830nm), with the
rejuvenating power of Omnilux revive, pure
red light (633nm), to enhance DNA
synthesis and stimulate tissue regeneration
and collagen production faster than before.
When targeted at the cells involved in tissue
regeneration and those responsible for the
synthesis and remodeling of collagen,
Combination Omnilux Phototherapy has a
significant impact on the reduction of fine
lines and wrinkles.
The third system available in the Omnilux
range is Omnilux Blue. This non-invasive
treatment uses a spectrally pure blue light
source to clear and control one of the
world’s most common skin condition: acne.
Omnilux Blue is a simple, relaxing
treatment with radical results that works
naturally with the body to promote a healing
response. The light activates natural
chemicals found in the bacteria that are
responsible for redness associated with acne.
When stimulated these chemicals destroy
the bacteria and alter the pH balance of the
cells, creating a less inviting environment
for bacteria to multiply.
Based on proven and reliable LED
technology, the RejuvaLight system from
Appearance Skincare has been developed
to provide the benefits of Photorejuvenation
and Photostimulation treatments for
collagen renewal and skin toning in the
form of a safe and reliable Light Treatment.
The RejuvaLight comes in either a standard
Red/Blue configuration, which provides a
Rejuvenation and Acne Therapy platform,
or the Hi Red version providing a focus on
the Rejuvenation programme for improving
fine lines and wrinkles.
The red wavelength used is recognised for
its benefits in stimulating collagen renewal
as well as improving skin tone and
microcirculation, while the blue wavelength
is selected for its ability to eliminate the
p.acne bacteria that is often associated with
acne.
The chosen wavelengths can be used
separately or simultaneously and clients
treated either lying down or in the sitting
position. Treatments typically last for 20 to
30 minutes and can be repeated at regular
intervals until the desired outcome is
achieved.
skinforlife’s nuewave LED light
therapy offers a choice of anti-ageing
red light, antibacterial blue or a
combination of both lights to use

Belle Santé’s Bio-Synthesis LED unit
carries four separate light colours within
seven pre-programmed facial options,
including: Blue for acne, which helps to
increase skin hydration and kill Propioni
bacterium acnes (p acnes) and Green for
pigmentation problems, which helps to
detoxify and nourish the skin whilst
promoting self-regeneration.
In addition, Yellow is used for its antiinflammatory properties, as it seeks to
increase lymphatic circulation, relax the
nervous system and boosts the immune
system, while Red is used to promote antiageing by increasing blood circulation and
collagen synthesis whilst reducing pore
sizes.
Alternatively, nuewave LED light therapy is
the latest salon procedure available from
skinforlife. The mobile, freestanding unit
with XXL oversized treatment head can
treat larger areas of skin such as the
complete face, neck and décolleté at the
same time, or the full back, which can be
particularly helpful in the treatment of acne.
The new design LED plate can be angled
from 90-180˚ allowing clients to lie flat on a
salon couch, or sit upright on a chair.
As with skinforlife’s smaller handset
systems, the freestanding nuewave unit
offers a choice of anti-ageing red light,
antibacterial blue or a combination of both
lights to be used simultaneously. There are
also ten programmed series within the touch
panel and you have complete control to alter
the strength of the LED treatment at the
touch of a button.
Suitable for all skin times and with no
down-time, nuewave light therapy can be
offered as a stand-alone procedure or in
conjunction with other standard and
technical skin treatments - such as
microdermabrasion, oxygen or injectables.

bring me
sunshine
David Alpert
David Alpert asks, are we becoming
sun phobic?
Extensive scientific studies prove that exposure to UVB rays from
the sun produce beneficial chemical processes within the body.
Most important is the synthesis of vitamin D, which is absolutely
vital for our health and well-being.
Sunlight also has psychological benefits too.
It stimulates the production of serotonin (the
‘feel good’ neurotransmitter) and suppresses
the release of lethargy-inducing melatonin.
Exposure to sunlight results in vitamin D
being made in the liver and ‘activated’ in the
kidneys, colon, breast and prostate. This
happens within minutes, and is maximized
long before the skin becomes red or tanned.
This is important as this vitamin has the
ability to keep cancer cells from growing
and dividing, thereby preventing some of
the most deadly cancers from occurring.
Similarly, vitamin D plays a key role in the
process of absorbing calcium from your
food and depositing it in your bones.
Without enough vitamin D simply eating
calcium-rich food or supplementing on
calcium will not ensure healthy bones - in
fact this has other health implications if the
calcium ends up in places where you don’t
want it, such as your arteries.
When we manufacture vitamin D in the
body, the blood vessels become more
flexible (high blood pressure is caused by
stiff and narrow blood vessels). Professor
Michael Holick, a US scientist and worldleading vitamin D expert found during a
number of studies on UVB and heart health,
that patients with high blood pressure when
exposed to UVB became healthier with a
lowered blood pressure.
how much?
For those of us living in higher latitudes,
furthest from the equator, the iiaa advocates
moderate oral supplementation of vitamin D
combined with sensible sun exposure using
the right type of skin protection.
54
GUILD NEWS
Unsurprisingly, the body has a selfregulating mechanism so that you do not
produce toxic levels of vitamin D when
exposing yourself to the sun. But we have
to limit the oral supplementation of
Vitamin D to avoid potential toxic effects.
The exact amount depends on the
individual’s age, skin colour, sun exposure,
and body fat, but as a general indication
200 to 400 IU’s per day is a good base
from which to work.
We know that most outward signs of ageing
skin result from cumulative everyday sun
exposure. It begins in infancy and continues
throughout life, though it can take 10 to 40
years for the damage to first manifest itself.
Damage is caused by free radicals: as light
in the form of photons (which are packets
of energy) strike the atoms in your skin
‘dislodging’ electrons creating free
radicals. It can also destroy the lightsensitive vitamin A that maintains healthy
cell growth in your skin.
So how do you strike the right balance
between sun exposure for health benefits
with minimal risk of damage? How much
sun exposure do we need? Again it is down
to the individual.
As a general guideline, according to Dr Des
Fernandes, a world-renowned expert on the
skin, founder of Environ Skincare as well as
one of the iiaa’s founding panel of experts:
“It takes only a few minutes of sunlight to
generate enough vitamin D each day. It takes
20 minutes to convert pre-vitamin D to
active vitamin D. After that we need to
protect ourselves or it will be destroyed! So
the longest that one should stay in sunlight is
about 20 minutes.”
After that, he recommends either sun
abstinence or the use of stronger sun
protection products that use a combination
of moderate SPFs (around 16) coupled with
high levels of anti-oxidants (see below).
Professor Holick recommends exposing
ones arms and face (or equivalent skin
surface) to the sun for a 1/4 med (one med is
the time that it takes an individual’s skin to
turn pink) three times a week.
A new light
on skin therapy
sun protection
Most damage is particularly as a result of
our exposure to UVA light which will
penetrate cloud cover and even light
clothing. It is important to wear protection
all year round, and not just when you are
on holiday soaking up the sun.
Good protection includes the replacement
of vitamins that get damaged by the light
- vitamin A as well as free radical
scavenging antioxidants such as vitamin
C, vitamin E and beta carotene which
mops up free radicals and protects the
skin from further damage. Dr Fernandes
has always advocated low SPF
protection. SPFs give us an indication of
the protection against UVB - the ray we
need to manufacture Vitamin D - but they
don’t give us any indication of the
protection (if any) against UVA, which is
more closely associated with the ageing
of the skin.

Acne vulgaris, meaning ‘common’
acne, is a largely testosteroneinduced skin condition, where
sebum quantity is changed causing
blockage of sebaceous follicles
with resultant micro-abscesses,
inflammation and eventual
scarring of the skin. It affects the
areas of skin with the densest
population of sebaceous follicles;
these areas include the face, the
upper part of the chest, and the
back.
Acne is more common in males than in
females during adolescence and more
prevalent in women than in men during
adulthood. Peak age of acne in women is
from 20 to 40, even up to 45, due to various
hormonal changes. Many women may also
experience a post-menopausal resurgence of
acne due to the absence of oestrogen at this
time. Clients with problem skin will
probably need adequate vitamin A
treatment for the rest of their lives.
treatment objectives
and plan
Acne is a very common problem, which
requires a logical and individualised
approach to treatment:
• Drain the blocked sebaceous follicles
containing the abnormal sebum and
epithelial cell plugs, pus and
inflammatory debris;
• Treat the infection by killing the bacteria
causing the acne abscesses;
• Normalise the sebocyte behaviour
pertaining to quantity of sebum produced;
• Repair damaged skin
56
GUILD NEWS
Dr Ernst Eiselen looks at effective ways to
manage problem skin concerns and satisfy
your clients’ needs
managing client
expectations
It is vital to know what your client
wants and expects from the treatment
for the money she/he is going to spend.
It is virtually impossible for the client to
take a long-term view of the treatment
until such time as the initial lesions
have cleared, or people start noticing
and commenting on improvement.
Treatment should therefore always be
tailored to meet the expectations of the
client as far as it is practically possible.
• Acne often ‘gets worse’ for a week
or two (or even longer) before it
gets better, while being treated. No
easy-to-understand explanation
exists for this phenomenon at the
moment.
You should always explain the following
points to the client:
• Be patient and diligent in treatment the cells and structures that are
changed to clear the acne all take 30
to 40 days to be renewed. Therefore
improvement in acne takes place
over a few months rather than
weeks. The infection and
inflammation can often be improved
in a few days or weeks, while
normalising the sebocyte behaviour
takes at least six months to a year.
• Acne is a hormonally induced skin
problem cause by over-sensitivity to
male hormone, or cortisone - which is
most commonly induced by stress (and
occasionally by malfunctioning of the
adrenal glands).
• Squeezing or rough extractions of
comedones should be avoided at all
costs as the type of bruising and
injury associated with this leads to
scarring which is very difficult to
deal with later.
• Acne needs an integrated approach of
topical treatment by a skin care
professional in the salon and a home
care programme to be adhered to in a
disciplined manner if clearing is to be
achieved. More severe forms will
need both approaches as well as
treatment prescribed by the client’s
doctor.
lifestyle
modification
• Lifestyle and diet do not cause acne,
but all have an influence on acne and
alteration of these can be very helpful
in making improvements. Changes in
lifestyle can reduce stress levels.
• Sun exposure causes thickening of the
stratum corneum. Sunburn increases
the chance of follicular obstruction
and this in turn may manifest as
acne about two weeks after a holiday
in the sun.
Diet - Most texts state that there is no
association between diet and acne.
This is not entirely accurate. A fair
proportion of women in the general
population (about 15 percent in
Western societies) over-produce
testosterone in response to episodes of
low blood sugar. This makes acne
worse in a direct manner. Secondly,
diets rich in antioxidants tend to
decrease the incidence and severity of
infections, improving the degree of
inflammation in acne lesions.
Sun - Avoid sun-exposure. In the past,
sun-exposure was advocated for acne
lesions. Higher ambient temperatures
increase sebum production. UV light

In a condition with active infected or inflammatory lesions, this improved
circulation makes a much more definite contribution. Exercise,
furthermore, has a natural de-stressing function. Emotional and other
stresses increase outflow from the adrenal glands - adrenalin and noradrenalin, cortisone, testosterone and aldosterone. Testosterone directly
makes the acne worse, whilst the effects of the other hormones indirectly
makes the acne worse via complex metabolic pathways.
Medical Treatments - In a large number of clients the topical treatment
may not be enough to resolve the immediate, acute situation. Such clients
should receive medical help in conjunction with their doctors. Advice may
consist of a few months of antibiotic treatment, some hormone
manipulation in female patients and the prescription of vitamin A palmitate
by mouth where required. It is important to communicate with the client’s
doctor to explain the vitamin skin therapy being applied.

Normalisation of the sebocyte behaviour can only be successfully achieved
by taking Isotretinoin, a vitamin A drug prescribed by a dermatologist or
doctor. However, it is a potentially toxic drug with allergic reactions that
can be near impossible to rectify and should only be used as a last resort
when sufficient other treatment has properly failed to rectify the condition.
Female patients have the added benefit of being able to use hormone
therapy, which will block out the male hormone on the sebocytes
(sebaceous cells) that helps to temporarily normalize the sebum quality
and quantity whilst the blocking agent is active. However, those on such
medication have to take extra care to avoid
pigment-inducing sun-exposure by adequate sun protection and avoidance.
keep visual & written records
Comparable ‘before and after’ photographs are essential to help clients see
the improvement. Take good quality digital pictures of the whole face,
frontal and side views in good light in a place where the pictures can be
repeated easily as the treatment progresses.
Keep a detailed written record of the client’s treatment and reaction to
treatment. This is invaluable when treatment needs to be adjusted for any
reason during the course of therapy.

Exercise - Regular exercise early in the morning, late afternoon or indoors
is very important. The increased heart rate causes a more dynamic
circulation. This in turn increases oxygenation of the skin and the supply
of nutrients. The removal of breakdown products is enhanced. These
natural by-products of the metabolism may actually or potentially be toxic
to healthy cells if they accumulate above normal levels.

It’s not that we don’t like body therapies,
quite the opposite in fact. It’s just that we see
vast sums of money being spent learning a
myriad of body treatments that often fail to
repay the costs of training with client
bookings.
To be fair this often depends on the type of
business you have. A high street skin centre
may not benefit from offering the latest in
Spa techniques unless they can guarantee
they already have a queue of clients ready to
book. Themed Spas and wellness centres can
charge extraordinary sums for the privilege
of interesting treatments with their staff,
because of the facilities available along with
the nature of their business and clientele. For
the average skin centre attracting the woman
(or man) on the street, these body treatments
are still perceived as extravagant luxuries
that are not within affordable reach.
In truth, regardless of the many types of
body treatments available, the number one
therapy for the body year after year is the
one hour body massage. Owners of therapy
businesses may find that concentrating
training on this area of body therapy more
financially viable than any other.
Of course this does present some problems
of its own if you are doing six to eight

The International Dermal Institute and teach
two fantastic courses for passionate massage
therapists. The one day class called ‘Save
your Hands Massage’ is designed to give
massage therapists the vital tools to protect
hands, neck, back, body and ultimately their
career. And ‘Advanced Holistic Medical
Massage’ for therapists striving to advance
their techniques is an excellent extension
course.
It’s fair to say that therapists often harm
themselves by the way they work because
they are not conscious of themselves. The
most basic of mistakes is using a couch at an
incorrect height. This means that therapists
have to stoop or reach to apply pressure to
the client. The correct height should be at fist
level. Combine this with the therapist using
muscular pressure instead of body weight
and it spells a recipe for disaster. This is
usually the reason that many therapists burn
out within the first few years of working.
They simply don’t know how to protect their
bodies from injury. After spending years
easing the pain of others they find their own
For the business that will have many
therapists using the same room, you would
do well to invest the extra money in an
adjustable height treatment bed. This will
protect your staff from injury and may
protect your business from a potential law
suit if staff develop repetitive strain injury
and are no longer able to work.
For massage therapy to be a ‘bread and
butter’ booking of any business it has to be
an effective treatment carried out by
therapists that love to massage. We can both
remember receiving treatments that range
from mediocre to pathetic. Without any
consultation or prior discussion as to where
we were feeling pain, no surprises, we left
with no pain relief whatsoever.
Without huge potential for the business
driving retail sale, it is imperative that the
therapist’s massage technique keeps the
clients returning for repeat treatments. In
these unsteady financial times quality
treatments and real customer service has to
be the focus of any business wanting to ride
the storm. Using techniques like those taught
by Jing can only assist us in maintaining our
love for massage therapy (whilst protecting
ourselves) and ensure we never stop offering
outstanding treatments.

ROBY
money matters!
Part 2: What is a budget and why do I need one?
A budget is a plan; a financial budget is a plan of your finances, what is
coming in, what is going out and the influencers upon those two factors.
Budgeting sets out the financial targets for
your business. It helps you anticipate
problems and compare what has actually
happened with what you expected to
happen, i.e. what you actually took in sales
against what you expected to take in sales.
cost budget
After you have created your sales budget,
you should then work out your outgoings
or costs. If VAT-registered, then calculate
all costs excluding VAT.
Budgets should represent accurate and
realistic targets, so you know what to
expect and will be able to foresee any
issues/challenges and take evasive action.
They should act as your guide and are well
worth the time involved!
As discussed in the last article, list your
fixed and variable costs. Consider whether
there is likely to be any change in these
fixed or variable costs and if so add it to
the applicable months.
sales budget
cash budget
The sales budget sets out what you expect
to turnover each month of a set period of
time, usually a year. It will be based on
expected sales of each product, treatment
or service alongside the prices you intend
to charge. If you are VAT-registered, you
should use figures excluding VAT in all
your calculations.
The cash budget, or as it’s sometimes
called the ‘cashflow forecast’, uses the
information in the sales and costs budgets
to forecast the money which will be going
into and out of your bank account each
month.
If you have been in business for at least a
year, you should look at the historic
monthly sales figures of the past year, and
work out if you can expect the same sales
pattern this coming year.
If you have a new business, write down
your projected sales per month
remembering that this should be a
quantifiable figure, not one you have
pulled out of the air nor one you would
like to achieve.
Take into consideration any forward
bookings or regular customers you can rely
on for incomings, then take a look at
outside influences that may affect your
figures such as competition action,
economic climate for your customers and
price alterations etc.
When you have completed the sales
budget, with at the very least the main
considerations addressed, what does it tell
you about your sales and do the monthly
figures look realistic?
62
GUILD NEWS
Look at the timing of your cash
movements, will the money for your
forecast sales arrive in time to cover costs
such as salaries, equipment and raw
materials?
Also do you need to allow for a percentage
of bad debts (sales which are never paid
for)?
Try to factor in other considerations such
as loan repayments, tax payments or
rebates, VAT payments or receipts (if
registered for VAT), and use these figures
to forecast the money available in your
bank at the end of each month i.e your
bank balance.
budget vs. actual
Budgets are an educated guess about the
future, but once you have started that time
period, or if a new business starts trading,
you will be able to compare actual monthly
sales and costs against the budget and this
will tell you what is actually happening.
actual sales
Questions you need to answer at the end
of each month are:
1. Was turnover lower than you had
budgeted for and if so why? e.g Has a
particular treatment, product or
service reached the end of its life
cycle? Were there any external
influences which affected sales, if so
were they one-offs or likely to be
repeated?
2. Was turnover higher than you had
budgeted for and if so why? Was the
increase in sales caused by a large
one-off order? Were sales of any
individual treatment or product
significantly different from forecast
levels and if so why?

3. Do you need to focus your marketing
and promotional plans on different
aspects of your business?
actual costs and
actual cash
In the same way, check how your actual
costs and your actual cash compare with
the budget forecasts.
Remember if there’s a difference from
an actual figure to a budgeted figure you
need to understand why and its reason
needs to be addressed in the next budget
period.

marketing matters
lesson from a
baseball legend
John McClements
The ever popular game of
Baseball from ‘across the pond’
in the USA may not be so trendy
on our shores; however it can
still teach us a thing or two about
marketing. As I have said many
times before, I like to keep things
in marketing as simple as
possible and I don’t think it gets
much simpler than this!
Once upon a time, away over there in the
land of the free, there hailed a young man
by the name of Babe Ruth (George
Herman Ruth, Jr. 1895 - 1945). Babe was
not in the health, beauty, skin care or any
other industry even remotely connected to
your business or mine; he can however
teach us all a very valuable lesson.
Babe Ruth was an American Major
League baseball player from 1914
to1935. Named the greatest baseball
player in history in various surveys and
rankings, his home-run hitting prowess
and charismatic personality made him a
larger than life figure in the ‘Roaring
Twenties’. Babe held two world records one, known by millions around the world
was for his record number of strikes (the
number of times he hit the ball).
His second world record however was not
so well known - Babe had missed the ball
more times than anyone else in the
history of the game! Not an impressive
record you might think for the guy who,
in a 1999 poll, was ranked as the third
greatest US athlete of the century, behind
Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali.
Therein however lies a very simple
lesson; a lesson from which we could all
profit.
by John McClements
Babe Ruth was a ‘worker’; he worked at
his game as hard as he could. When he
saw an opportunity, he took it. When he
had a chance to hit the ball, he took it. Yes,
he missed often, but in the end he was
successful enough times to make him the
best. Yes, no doubt he was also very good
at his ‘job’ but that in itself is very often
not enough. In Ruth’s case it was his skill,
plus his effort, that brought success.
Perhaps a little similar in some way to the
age-old saying by Robert the Bruce that,
“if at first you don’t succeed, try, try and
try again.”
In salons up and down the country I often
hear of therapists or receptionists who
have exceptionally high levels of sales,
outselling their colleagues in products and
treatments. People talk about how good
these people are at selling, but rarely does
anyone consider that these ‘successful
sellers’ may also get “no, thank you”
more often than many others do! More
often than not, it is not that they are
‘better’ at introducing new products and
treatments, it is simply because they try
more often!
Lady Luck
“Ah!” but I hear someone ask, “Is it not
mostly down to good old fashioned lady
luck?” Does ‘luck’ come into it? Of
course it does, but always remember that
you have to be there in the first place to
take advantage of ‘Lady Luck’.
A professor at the University of
Hertfordshire has carried out some
experiments which indicate that we have
a lot more influence on our own good
fortune than we realise.
Professor Wiseman has outlined four
principles to help us increase our ‘luck’:
Principle One: Maximize Chance
Opportunities
Lucky people are skilled at creating,
noticing and acting upon chance
opportunities. They do this in various
ways, including networking, adopting a
relaxed attitude to life and by being open
to new experiences.
Principle Two: Listening to Lucky
Hunches
Lucky people make effective decisions by
listening to their intuition and gut feelings.
In addition, they take steps to actively
boost their intuitive abilities by, for
example, meditating and clearing their
mind of other thoughts.
Principle Three: Expect Good Fortune
Lucky people are certain that the future is
going to be full of good fortune. These
expectations become self-fulfilling
prophecies by helping lucky people persist
in the face of failure, and shape their
interactions with others in a positive way.
Principle Four: Turn Bad Luck to Good
Lucky people employ various

nail art
pop

by claire matthewman
Create your own statement
with the best of this season’s
nail art . . .
The Spring/Summer 08 catwalks
were awash with primary
colours and pastel shades
inspired by modern art and
mixed bouquets, and for nails
this means that anything goes,
from geometric prints and pop
art colours to embellished and
pastel designs.
So if you’ve always been interested in
Nail Art but only really had the chance to
dabble, then it’s time to put your artistic
skills to the test.
“By adding nail art into your treatment
menu not only do you keep your
customers happy with several fantastic
designs, but good business and extra
financial rewards will increase,” says Tara
Oldham, Senior Trainer at Lena White
Ltd/OPI.
“The main thing to remember with nail
art is to have a sense of fun about your
work. It should be an accessory for the
total look and done with a good attention
to detail,” adds Samantha Sweet of Sweet
Squared Ltd.
This technique can be applied to any nail
system in its 3D form, so if you have a
mixture of clients of Acrylic, UV Gel,
Fibre/Silk Wraps or Natural Nails, you can
work with this medium.
During the course, you will learn how to
decorate the natural nail, overlays and
extensions. In addition, you will earn how
to mix, blend and apply designer acrylic
glitter powders from scratch and how to use
them to create unique designs for your
clients.
Nailing the trends
Keeping up with the catwalk trends is only
easy when you know how. Look to fashion
magazines to draw inspiration from
patterns, prints, colours and textures.
Once you have your design in mind, think
about how it can be created using different
effects, for example, the marbling technique
will look great with this
summer’s floaty chiffons (see
Step by Step: Summer Nails by
Margarita Belska for Kinetics
Professional Nail Systems,
page 73).
For those of you who are complete
novices, or who are just wanting to brush
up on your skills, The Brentwood
Academy offer a number of courses to
help you on your way.
OPI offers several products to
help you with your nail art,
including OPI Competition
3000™ Nail Art Brushes: the
Striper Brush and the Designer
Brush.
In particular, the VTCT Level 2
Certificate in Nail Art is a short, parttime course leading to a national
qualification in Nail Art. Tuition covers
the application of Rhinestones, Foil,
Striping Tape, Glitter Dust, Flat stones,
Jewellery and transfers, in addition to
techniques such as marbling and
opalescent designs.
The Striper Brush is ideal for
creating linear designs, stripes,
feathers, leaves and wisps. For
a straight line, load the brush
with your desired colour and
attach the tip of the brush to
the nail before laying it down
flat and dragging it across the
surface.
The Brentwood Academy also offers a
one-day course in 3D Acrylic Nail Art.
For a curved line, repeat the steps above but
instead of dragging the colour down the
nail, create a curved sweeping motion
across the nail, applying slight pressure as
you do so.
Finally, if you’ve always wanted to know
how to create pull-through designs then
listen up, as OPI recommends applying the
lacquer over base colour and immediately
dragging the Striper through. Varying the
lengths of the lines creates feathers.
If flowers, dots, commas, short feathers and
detailed lines are more your thing, then the
Designer Brush is just what you need.
Create dots by loading up the brush and
gently touching the tip to the nail, and for
commas and swirls; do the same but add a
slight twist of the wrist to curl your ends.
For short feathers, load the brush, touch the
tip to the nail, and flick it off quickly.
OPI’s education department has loads of
tips for techs wanting to create fantastic nail
art designs. They can give you information
on the different types of nail art available,

David Suzuki looks at equipment developments
for the forward-thinking skin therapist
As technology becomes smaller

of our day to day lives, it is no
surprise that we are seeing this
trend coming forward with regards
to skin care tools and technology.
devices utilise a clear LED light
illumination system that allows for complete
and accurate visual assessments. Most visors
can hold multiple magnification lenses at
once allowing the skin therapist the agility
to analyse at different magnification levels

Whether it be the high tech vision visors
that now allow the skin therapist to

while they work, or the new breed of

A big part of this evolution has been
spawned by the extremely strong trend of
bringing the treatment, literally, out of the

dark corners of our treatment rooms, the
future of skin care could not be more

more than efficacious and effective, they are
interesting and fashionable; the bling of skin

Although science has brought forth many
new exciting, effective and expensive
photography tools and systems to analyse
the skin, there is simply no replacement for
the aesthetician and her visual assessment of

measurements are dependable, consistent,
and clinically accepted.
As you place the device on the skin, a low
level of electrical current is utilised to
measure the conductivity, resistance, and the
time in which it takes to obtain the reading.
These measurements are calculated against
an internal database of statistics to determine
the exact final numerical result. These tools
have been proven to assist the skin therapist
in gaining factual bio-marker measurements
for each client in multiple areas of the face,
neck and décolleté. The measurements, in
conjunction with the visual and physical
examination of the skin, greatly refines the
skin therapist’s ability to prescribe specific
products and services.
Although most scopes have the ability to
capture a still photograph and save it to a
client file, the forward thinking skin
therapist is using it as the modern mirror.
Experts note that clients who view their skin
magnified by 50x to 200x on a computer
monitor instantly take a more significant
interest in improving their skin, as well as
gain an entirely new insight on how the skin
works and why certain products and
professional services are needed.

One of the latest rages in hand-held professional technology is ultrasonic
peeling, combined with product penetration capabilities using a flat metal,
peeling applicator. Ultrasonic exfoliation works with high speed (more than
20,000 Hz) oscillations of the exfoliation flat metal peeling applicator. The
applicator is applied to the skin in upward, peeling motions, generally
during the cleansing stage of a facial. Some therapists also combine it with
light exfoliation enzyme gels. After the exfoliation and peeling effect is
realised, a press of a button changes the device programming and the same
tool can be utilised for positive or negative ionisation, eliminating the need

When I first became a licensed aesthetician more than 20 years ago, I was
intrigued with the neat tool belts and holsters that the hair people utilised for

Introducing complementary
therapies into skincare
Despite living in an age of
progress, it’s often the timehonoured and innate practices that
we revert to when the fast pace of
our modern world gets us down.
Take yoga for example, an ancient
Indian spiritual practice thousands
of years old - and an industry
today worth nearly $3 billion in
the US.
Salons and Spas are another good example
of where old successfully meets new;
modern technology and advanced skincare
ingredients sit side by side with holistic
treatments and complementary therapies,
and as the name suggests, the two work to
complement each other, offering clients
treatments that promote confidence and
beauty, both inside and out.
“When I became a beauty therapist some
27 years ago, it made perfect sense to me
that beauty, health, and well-being were
intrinsically linked,” says holistic beauty
therapist Bharti Vyas, in Angela Egan’s
Holistic Skincare: An Essential Guide for
Therapists.*
“How could anyone expect to look or feel
beautiful if they did not feel it within? It
was on that basis I decided to incorporate
holistic therapies into my traditional beauty
therapies; I knew this way it would be
easier to get the desired effect I knew I
could achieve as a therapist.”
Secondly, with clients experiencing
increasing busy lives through work and
personal commitments, plus the onset of the
‘credit crunch’, clients’ attitudes to
treatments may be changing.
Whilst the majority of your regular clients
will see treatments and skincare as a
necessity - and therefore will still be very
much in need of your services - a lack of
time and spare income may mean that
clients lean more towards treatments that
offer ‘ultimate recuperation’, providing
them with as much benefit as possible.
For example, a client who has had a hard
month at work may be suffering from
stress-related skin problems, which of
course will need special attention; however
they may also be left feeling unable to cope
spiritually with future stresses.
Bearing in mind that therapists are after all,
therapists, offering a skin care treatment
combined with a stress-relieving therapy
such as reiki will allow clients to get the
skincare and spiritual assistance they need,
leaving them feeling outwardly confident
and with the correct coping mechanisms in
place.

Complementary therapies in skincare and
body treatments are of great importance to
the industry right now, for two very distinct
reasons:
Firstly, interest in the holistic industry
has never been higher; and has been
steadily on the rise over the past few years.
‘Alternative’ therapies such as herbalism,
reiki and acupuncture have become popular
amongst consumers looking for, well, an
alternative to pharmaceuticals and more
pragmatic methods, and consequently
demand for these has increased.

“Using our ‘System of Analysis™’, we are
able to look at the client with a much wider
perspective, and give them the correct
treatment advice and home care guidance to
help restore the skin’s overall balance - as
part of a complete treatment programme.”
Complementary
Therapies
Acupressure: Using the fingers to press
key points on the skin to stimulate the
body’s self-healing abilities.
Acupuncture is similar to this, but with
the use of needles.
The Eve Taylor™ Facial applies the holistic
approach to skincare, using Eve Taylor™
essential oils in their skin and body care
products:
Alexander Technique: A method of
releasing unwanted muscular tension
throughout the body, improving ease of
movement, balance and coordination.
“Essential oils have the highest vibration
known to man, which resonates in harmony
with human vibration to elevate and aid
homeostasis in the body,” adds Chris. “So it
goes without saying that even the simplest
application of an Eve Taylor™ pre-blended
facial or body oil will have a positive and
uplifting effect on the individual.”
Spa Sorisa
Spa Sorisa and Artiscent have introduced
two complementary therapies into their
treatment range, the most recent being the
Thai Herbal compress. A muslin parcel of
aromatic herbs and exotic spices, the Thai
Herbal compress originates from Thailand’s
Ayutthaya period (dating back to the 14th to
18th centuries), and can be easily
incorporated into facial and body
treatments.
The Thai compress is first heated in a hot
towel cabinet, before the warm bundles are
applied directly to the skin. The heat and
herbs are absorbed into the body to help
reduce aches and pains, increase lymphatic
drainage and recondition the skin, as well
as treat inflammation and skin blemishes.
Also available from Spa Sorisa is Geoter
Stone Therapy, a technique which aims to
bring harmony to mind, body and spirit.
Using a compact unit called the Geoter to
heat the stones, the massage uses the energy
transmitted through the hands and stones to

essences or oils extracted from wild or
cultivated plants, applied either through

stress; and can again be easily incorporated
into other treatments.
The stones come from age-old mountain
sediments, which have been polished by the
effects of water and ice through the passing
of time. Using the warm and cold stones to
apply pressure and thermal stimulation to
the body, the therapy can affect the chakras.
The massage technique can also incorporate
the following: Aromatherapy, using the
inhalation of oils to stimulate, relax and
balance; Music therapy, the selection of
music to affect the state of mind and
achieve harmony and relaxation; and
Chromotherapy, using oils from pure plant
essences on each energy centre to regulate
the emotional field.
The Modern School of
Ancient Therapies
“In this day and age it is so important to be
aware of combining skincare with an
holistic approach, as client’s demands and
needs are changing,” says Susan Neary,
Training School and Salon owner at the
Modern School of Ancient Therapies.
The School uses an organic skincare range,
the A.R.T.® (Age Refining Technology)
Range from Young Living Essential Oils, to
complement their Holistic Therapy
treatments; offering high quality ingredients
but remaining synergistic with any massage
using therapeutic-grade essential oils.
Pure Bliss’ ‘natural, organic’ skincare
complements their facials,
influenced by Japanese techniques
and using energising massage to
stimulate ‘bioenergy’ in the cells.

The A.R.T® range recognises the power of
essential oils, adding Frankincense,
Sandalwood and Wolfberry seed oil for
their ability to revitalise and rejuvenate the

With the Young Living Organic Facial, the

massage at the beginning of the facial, and
for a further relaxing touch, can incorporate
hot and even warm and cold stones to the
facial areas.
Pure Lochside
Pure Lochside are currently developing a
range of Spa treatments, due to be launched
in 2009, based on complementary therapies;
incorporating aromatherapy, holistic
massage, reflexology and reiki into
treatments.
To complement her ‘natural, organic’
skincare, Sallyanne created her own unique
facials, working with the belief that the skin
(and body) has the innate ability to heal and
renew itself - although sometimes it needs
to be given a little support.
Facials were developed using the principles
of Bioelectricity and influenced by
Japanese techniques. The facials use
energising massage to stimulate ‘bioenergy’
in the cells, which enables the therapist to
‘sculpt’ the face, releasing tension in some
areas and firming in others.
The Pure Bliss professional treatment range
offers skincare bursting with active plant
extracts and essential oils, and free from
synthetic ingredients such as mineral oils,
sulphates, artificial aromas and colours.

“I always had a great interest in beauty, so
after working in the NHS for over twenty
years, I decided to bite the bullet and pursue
my passion. My move from nursing to
beauty began with a job as an injector at a
Harley Street cosmetic clinic, where I built
up my experience before going freelance
with my own mobile business.

As I stepped off the bustling streets of
York into face etc... medispa the first
thing I noticed was the immediate
sense of calm that overwhelmed me.
The reception was warm and friendly
and felt more like a bijoux café than a
waiting area. I was greeted by one of
the company’s five dedicated reception
team, who took my details and offered
me a drink whilst I waited to meet my
therapist, Suzie.
“While I was renting rooms within salons
and spas across the North of the country, I
noticed that there was a gap in the York
market for a clinic that offered the
‘complete’ beauty package, combining
advanced services with traditional
treatments. So after many months of
consultations and research, face
etc...medispa was born.”
Not usually one for having body
treatments, I arranged to have a
Universal Contour Wrap in the hope of
creating a smoother, sleeker silhouette
for summer, and thankfully I wasn’t
disappointed.
On average, how many clients do you
see a week and what type of client
does the medispa attract?
After filling in my details on the client
information form, Suzie took me up to
the dedicated wrap room and took my
measurements. She explained
thoroughly how the wrap worked and
what effect it was likely to have on my
body.
The reception area at face etc . . .
“On average I’d say that we see up to 300
clients per week. The great thing about face
etc... is that we attract a wide variety of
clients - from regular customers to walk in
clients, both male and female. In fact, we
have one lady who comes to see us nearly
everyday!”

“Both! The ethos of our salon is that
regardless of clients’ spend or status, we
ensure that all treatments are carried out to
an exceptional standard. We pride ourselves
on our friendly, client-centred approach, and
uphold a professional and personable
atmosphere at all times.”
But with fifteen members of staff, it
must be hard to keep up to date with
their training?
Sharon Moore first opened the doors of face etc. . . .
medispa in September 2004, with three team members and
four treatment rooms. Four years later and client demand
had increased so significantly, that in March 2008 the
beauty clinic relocated and expanded to a three story
building in the centre of the city.
Going from strength to strength, the sumptuous spa now
boasts a fifteen-strong team of therapists, nurses,
aesthetician and receptionists, fourteen rooms including a
private V.I.P double suite, and an extensive treatment menu
offering everything from waxing to wraps.
We caught up with Sharon to find out more about the
medispa and discover the secrets behind such a successful
business.
“Absolutely not! Training is key in such a
fast moving industry as ours and getting
regular updates is important for both our
staff and our clients.
“We offer both in-house training, through
Lisa - who is also an NVQ Assessor, and
we encourage our staff to attend external
training workshops laid on by the
manufacturers and product houses.
It’s great to see our therapists returning from
their training workshops and sharing their
enthusiasm with the other members of the
team.”

The face etc . . . team.
So what would you say were your
signature treatments?
“Whether we perform a customised facial
for someone suffering from problematic
skin, or combine an advanced treatment
with therapy to ease symptoms of stress or
ageing, our flexible approach has become
our signature style that our clients know and
love.”
How do you go about choosing a
product range?
“Not only is it important for us to select
professional and retail ranges that are
supported with scientific research and will
actually achieve results, we always take in
to account whether the brand will provide us
with a high standard of training and a
knowledgeable representative, so that we are
able to confidently introduce our clients to
the products.”
What are your plans for the future
and are there any additional
treatments that you would like to
introduce?
“Our recent relocation has really given us
the opportunity to expand and diversify, so
we are constantly looking for new
challenges and opportunities.
In terms of the advanced beauty, we plan
to incorporate a cosmetic surgery
consultancy in to the premises, and in
the near future offer a nutritional advice
service. What’s more, we have been
approached by a number of prestigious
Hotels in the area to offer packages for
their guests, which we are also keen to
pursue.”
What would you say have been
your key achievements as a salon
owner?
“While relocating to our new premises,
in the former Yorkshire Television
building, earlier this year was extremely
hard work, it is so rewarding to see my
concept come to life. Having now built
up an exceptional team of passionate,
dedicated staff, who are all so
enthusiastic about the company and
really enjoy working together, I feel so
proud of what I have achieved with the
help of my team and really positive
about the future.”
And finally, are there any words of
wisdom you can pass on to our
readers?
“Leap and the net will appear, and no
one has died from hard work!”
Once wrapped, Suzie helped me step
into the silver jumpsuit we all know
and love - and despite looking (and
walking) like a cross between a
mummy and an astronaut, I was
strangely comfortable in my attire.
With an hour to kill while the bandages
worked their magic, Suzie offered me
an Elemis facial, which I gladly
accepted. Once positioned on the
couch, I endured an hour of what can
only be described as pure bliss as Suzie
scrubbed, peeled and cleansed my skin
leaving me with an ecstatic glow.
Once the facial was finished, it was
time to remove the wrap. As the
bandages were unravelled, I became
aware of just how tightly they had been
wrapped in the first place. Thankfully,
due to the mineral-rich sea clay
solution the bandages were soaked in,
there was no need to shower after the
bandages were removed and my skin
felt uncommonly smooth.
Once again, Suzie took my
measurements and revealed that overall
I had lost a total of seven inches from
my body - most of which I had lost
from around my stomach, hips and
buttocks! Brilliant!!
