DISABILITY LEGAL CLINIC
If You’ve Been
The Tour de France began in 1903 as a publicity stunt. French journalist Geo Lefevre initially
conceived the idea of the grueling cycling competition in an attempt to boost the circulation of
L’Auto, the daily sports newspaper where Lefevre
worked. Together with his editor, Henri Desgrange, Lefevre developed a 1,500-mile clockwise loop of the country that began in Paris and
continued through Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse,
Bordeaux, and Nantes before returning to Paris.
While today’s race includes 21 stages, the initial
race included just six, though each stage averaged 250 miles. By contrast, none of the 21 stages
that make up the current Tour de France exceed
150 miles. Those six stages included the especially difficult first stage, which stretched almost
300 miles from Paris to Lyon. But the distance of
stages was not the only difference between the
initial race and the one cycling fans are familiar
with today. Unlike today’s cyclists who compete
as teams, those who competedin the initial Tour
de France rode as individuals and were not allowed to receive any assistance once the race began. As a result, many riders rode with spare tires
and tubes attached to their torsos so they could
address any tires that flattened during the race.
In addition, riders who participated in the initial
race rode at night, whereas today’s competitors
do not. Ultimately, the first Tour de France was
won by 32-year-old Maurice Garin, who beat the
next closest racer, Lucien Pothier, by three hours,
a margin of victory so great that no rider has ever
beaten it.

Our Daily Bread
We Need One Another
By Vernon C. Grounds
Read: Hebrews 10:19-25
As His custom was, [Jesus] went into the synagogue on
the Sabbath day. —Luke 4:16
If recent polls can be trusted, an upsurge of Lone
Ranger spirituality is occurring in the United
States. Church attendance is down. Biblical beliefs
are being abandoned. More and more of our fellow
citizens are looking inward, online, and out-ofdoors for the uplift they once sought in church
sanctuaries.
How different from Jesus! He made it His practice
to join in synagogue services regularly (Luke
4:16). But today, people no longer take Him as
an example. They settle for what is loosely called
“spirituality” and try to nurture their souls without
the timeless traditions of congregational praise,
prayer, biblical instruction, and edifying fellowship.
To gather regularly with other worshipers is an
uplifting source of comfort, inspiration, and emotional strength. The Bible urges us not to forsake
“the assembling of ourselves together” (Hebrews
10:25).
We should, of course, have regular devotional
times by ourselves. Just as surely, we need the
blessing of uniting with other believers for worship
and fellowship. We need to spend time together “in
order to stir up love and good works” (v.24). We
need to make it our habit to worship with others.
We need one another.
We each can have sweet fellowship with Jesus
As through the Word we learn to trust Him more;
But we must also meet with one another
As in His name we worship and adore. —Hess
Christians are like coals of fire—together,
they glow; apart, they grow cold.

A LIGHTER LOOK AT
PAST HALIBUT PURSUITS
(PART 1
OF
2)
It’s funny how our minds make associations when
it comes to thoughts and memories. With the start of
summer, I think about grilling. When I focus on grilling,
I can’t help but reminisce about halibut. Those rather
odd-looking, relatively large, flounder-like fish that inhabit the North Pacific are probably the best tasting fish
in the world in my opinion. While I love walleye fillets,
especially when prepared as a shoreline lunch on a Coleman stove, I’ll stick my neck out and say that I’ll take a
fresh halibut steak off the grill over just about anything.
During my tour at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska
from 1985 to 1989, I had the opportunity to pursue halibut each summer and then enjoy the tasty culinary benefits of my harvest year round. I’m reminded of how fortunate I was to regularly dine on halibut whenever I check
the current market price at Wholey’s in Pittsburgh’s
Strip District, which was a hefty $24.99/pound the last
time I was there. Internally, I constantly wrestle with the
mental debate over which I like best, “catching them” vs.
“eating them”, when it comes to halibut. Much like most
other outdoor pursuits, my halibut fishing was marked
with some comical memories that will last a lifetime.
Our annual halibut excursion was a well-planned event,
not a spur of the moment decision. It typically involved
making a reservation with a charter boat captain months
in advance. My first 11-hour drive from Fairbanks down
to Homer in 1986 was filled with anticipation and I can
recall arriving shortly before midnight at low tide. You
could barely see the water as we settled down to grab
a few hours of sleep in the car before daylight. I didn’t
anticipate the roar of nature’s alarm clock at 3 AM as
the tide came crashing in. The tremendous 25-foot difference between low and high tides reminded me to take
the motion sickness pills I had brought along before
heading out at dawn. This self-medication initially was
a subject of some good-natured teasing from my fellow
fishing party members, but the constant bobbing and
swaying of the 32-foot fishing boat on 6 to 8 foot seas,
had most of them wishing they had done likewise. While
they became seasick, I began landing halibut. Mostly
“chickens” in the 20 to 40 lb. range, these smaller halibut are excellent eating and very welcome in the boat. I
couldn’t help but ponder their strange appearance with a
white underside where they lay on the bottom, a mottled
gray-brown top side that camouflaged them very well
against the sea-floor, and oddly both eyes on the same
top side that enabled them to quickly observe and strike
prey that came too close.
It was a typical North Pacific day out on Kachemak Bay
of Cook Inlet, near the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula, as temperatures reached only the 50’s with windy conditions and periodic showers. My party members fished
on in spite of their misery, as we all eagerly anticipated
landing our first “barn door”, an extremely large halibut
which typically would run over 6-feet long, 4-feet wide, 1foot thick, and weigh over 200 lbs. We had all seen their
dockside photos in the charter fishing boat brochures
and on the walls in the bait shop where we had first met
our charter boat captain. My biggest halibut on that first
trip went 60 lbs., while another party member landed an
awesome 125 lb. specimen. The first mate deemed that
brute a “shooter” and after gaffing it, dispatched it with a
single .410 shot, before bringing it safely on-board.
Next week, we’ll look at one of those times when it’s
not just the fish caught that makes a fishing trip so memorable. God Bless, Be Safe, and Great Outdoors!

June 20, 2014
by F. Will
This week, I have been reminding myself of the
climate we experienced during the early months
of this year. Once the temperature dipped into the
teens, in January, it stayed cold through February. It
was a long, bitter cold stretch. I remember being one
large goosebump.
The last thing on my mind when it was cold was
hygrophobia. There was no fear of dampness or
moisture. Now I’m, feeling it. After a few days in the
eighties, it seems as if I’m putting on a shirt that’s
still wet from the clothes dryer. Eeeew.
It’s all because of the water vapor in the air. That’s
humidity. One kind of humidity is Absolute Humidity. This is the measure of the amount of water vapor
in a volume of air, and it is used in engineering. Specific Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor in
a volume of air as a ratio to the amount of dry air in
that same volume of air. Now stay with me here, the
technical part is about over.
The humidity we hear about during the weather
report is Relative Humidity. The percentage of water
vapor mixture in the air, helps predict the likelihood
of a rainstorm, fog or morning dew. The amount of
water that the air can hold is also relative to the temperature. Warm air can hold more water vapor than
cold air.
I found this interesting. When the air is warm
and the humidity is high it reduces the rate that
perspiration dries from the skin. We begin to sweat
and it doesn’t evaporate as quickly because there
is already a lot of water vapor suspended in the air.
Evaporation, which cools the body, isn’t happening
at a comfortable rate, so we sweat more to make up
the difference. The temperature will feel warmer
because of the Relative Humidity. Disclaimer: This
information is coming from someone who barely
passed high school science class.
So, Summer weather has finally arrived. For those
who love warm weather, congratulations. And I keep
reminding myself of those brutal cold days of Winter
when I had every comforter I could find on the bed.
The only moments I saw bare skin was when I was
beneath a hot shower.
It brings to mind, the time of year that we deal
with relative humidity and the humidity of relatives.
Summertime can be fun with family and friends. The
parties, the cookouts. Since we’ll be outside a lot
during the Summer we’ll check the weather forecast
more often, wondering if the weather will ruin our
outdoor event. Will we have a good day for a picnic?
I wish that the weather people could come up with
a measurement for discretion. Maybe call it a kindness quotient. “Folks, it’s gonna be a hot and sunny
afternoon. A great day for your reunion. There’s an
85% chance that nobody’s gonna bring up that embarrassing dance you did at Aunt Charlene’s wedding reception in 1982. This is the year that all is
forgotten. Now go have a good time.” © 2014 WBB
