Department Statement
Varsity athletics at Fairleigh Dickinson is an extracurricular activity, whose place in the university is to
enhance the overall collegiate experience. The objective of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to
provide growth through competition. As a part of the
university experience, the function of intercollegiate athletics is to provide all student athletes with mechanisms
to participate in varsity competition. The Department of
Athletics at Fairleigh Dickinson works in concert with the
educational mission of Fairleigh Dickinson University and
the parameters of NCAA Division III philosophy. It is also
a member of the Eastern College Athletics Conference
and Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference
and adheres to all of their rules.
Philosophies which guide the day-to-day activity of
the Athletics Department include:
• to provide an opportunity for those students who
desire to strive for excellence through involvement in
a highly competitive intercollegiate athletic program.
• to develop and maintain an intercollegiate athletic
program which is competitive and at the same time
uncompromising in subscription to NCAA Division III
principles as well as the values upon which the FDUFlorham experience is founded.
• to develop and maintain a program of intercollegiate
athletic activities which is sensitive to the needs and
Fairleigh Dickinson University Football
desires of the College Community.
• to provide experiences through intercollegiate athletics designed to enhance the athletic, intellectual,
moral, and social development of students.
Media Information
The 2006 FDU-Florham Football Media Guide was
produced primarily for the media to assist in their coverage of Fairleigh Dickinson University Football.
Interviews: All interviews with players and coaches
should be arranged through the Sports Information
Office. Post-game interviews can be conducted on
the field after the 10-minute cooling off period recommended by the NCAA.
Press Box/Media Services: Members of the media
who plan on covering a game should reserve space
as early as possible. Working media will be supplied with complete final statistics and play-by-play
approximately 20 minutes after each game. Phone
and fax service is also available after the game in the
Ferguson Recreation Center.
Phone Lines: There is one line available for visiting radio
stations at a rental cost of $50.00 per game.

Fairleigh Dickinson University Football
47
The University
One of the largest private universities
in the state, Fairleigh Dickinson boasts a
wide range of academic programs (50
undergraduate majors) and two campuses in Northern New Jersey. Easy access
to New York City enables students and
faculty to take advantage of many financial, cultural, and social activities.
Recently, FDU adopted a new mission dedicated to preparing world citizens through global education. This mission responds to trends in business and
society and builds on the University's
strengths, including its extensive global
programs and its location in the New
York/New Jersey metropolitan area.
The College at Florham
Opened in 1958 as the Madison
Campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University,
the 178-acre College at Florham is
located on the former estate of Florence Vanderbilt Twombly and Hamilton
Twombly, approximately 30 miles west of
New York City. Its Georgian style buildings
have adapted to the educational needs
of approximately 2,400 undergraduate
students. The centerpiece of the campus is the 100-room “Mansion”, which
houses classrooms and campus administrative offices. Designed by Frederick
Olmstead, the architect of Central Park in
Manhattan, the campus grounds provide
FDU with one of the most picturesque
college settings in the metropolitan area.
Students living on campus have the
option of residing in three traditional dormitories or nine suite-style buildings. The
Campus Learning Center is located in
the residence halls, offering the students
complete academic support services.
The College at Florham also offers
a wide range of clubs and organizations
for students. This includes a very active
Greek community, consisting of five sororities and four fraternities.
College at Florham Athletics
Athletics are an important part of student life on campus with nearly half of all
undergraduates participating in 19 intercollegiate and several intramural sports.

Campus teams compete on the NCAA
Division III level and have consistently
contended for postseason bids and conference championships.
In the Fall of 1995, FDU athletes
gained access to a new $9 million
recreation center. The Ferguson
Recreation Center includes a 3,000 seat
basketball and volleyball facility with
three full size courts, an eight-lane competition swimming pool, two racquetball
courts, an aerobics studio, and a complete fitness center.
Admissions
High School seniors must submit a
completed application, either Scholastic
Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College
Testing (ACT) scores and an official copy of
their high school transcript. Interviews are
not normally required as part of the application process. However, the University
reserves the right to request an
interview with applicants. Preferred
filing date for fall applicants is January
15. Financial aid is available and should
be applied for by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Applications should be filed by February
15.
Entering freshmen with an 1100 or
better SAT score and a ranking in the top
15% of their high school class are eligible for the upper level of scholarships.

Coaching Staff
Rich Mosca
Head Coach
West Liberty State • 1970
S.R. SMITH
Rich Mosca enters his fifth year as
head coach of the Devils, after leading the
team to the most conference wins since
1999.
For the third straight year, Mosca has
brought in a recruiting class of over 50
players, as the Devils enter their third
full season of playing on the state-of-the art FieldTurf surface at
Robert T. Shields Field.
This veteran of the coaching ranks has had plenty of experience as an assistant collegiate coach and as a head high school
coach before taking this, his first collegiate head coaching job.
Overall, he enters his 36th year of coaching football. Before taking
over as head coach, Mosca coordinated the Devils’ offense for two
seasons.
Mosca is also a sought-after speaker. He has spoken at
various clinics on topics such as Offensive Football: Schemes and
Implementations, Special Teams Concepts, Academic Strategies
for Success, and Program Building. In addition to instructional
speaking, Mosca has been the featured speaker at high school
and youth football banquets around the state.
Before coming to FDU for the 2000 season, he spent five
years at Monmouth University coaching running backs and tight
ends. He was involved in two Northeast Conference co-championships at Monmouth and in 1998, he coached the Northeast
8
Fairleigh Dickinson University Football
Conference Player of the Year, running back Chris Reid. Before
that, Mosca spent six years as the head coach at Monmouth
Regional High School and brought them their first winning season
in 14 years.
This is Mosca’s second tour of duty with the Fairleigh
Dickinson football program. Last time around, he served as the
offensive coordinator from 1985 to 1989. Using a balanced prostyle offense during that four year period, the Devils posted a
21-15 record.
Mosca started the Middletown High School South football
program in 1976 and coached there for nine years. In 1981, he
led Middletown South to the Group 4 State Championship game.
He began his coaching career in 1970 as an assistant at Keyport
High School. Mosca became the head coach at Keyport in 1973
and, in 1975, led them to the state playoffs and their first Shore
Conference D Division championship in 19 years.
Mosca played scholastically at Red Bank High School, where
he captained the football team. While there, he played offensive
and defensive line.
He went on to Concordia College, where he was a member of
the WVIAC champions as a freshman in 1967. After his freshman
year, Mosca transferred to West Liberty State where his playing
career was cut short by injury.
Mosca resides in Eatontown with his wife Mary.

Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
St. Josephʼs (Indiana) • 1986
Lou Orth returns for his third season with the Devilsʼ coaching staff,
once again coordinating the offense and
tutoring the quarterbacks.
Orth has a wealth of coaching experience and knows the Middle Atlantic
Conference.
In 2003, Orth coached at Delaware
Valley, which posted a 9-2 recored after going 2-8 in 2002,
marking the fifth-best turnaround in Division III history
and defeated The College of New Jersey in the ECAC
Championship game.
He coached at Western Connecticut State in 2002, Cheyney
in 2000 and 2001, NFL Europe and Ursinus in 1999. He started
his collegiate football coaching career in 1993 at Widener,
where he stayed until 1999.
He helped Widener to Middle Atlantic Conference
Championships and NCAA Tournament berths in 1994 and
1995.
Orth lives in Harleysville, PA with his wife Fran and their
children, Louie, and Emily. Lou would like to recognize his
mom, Annette Orth, this season.
Brandon Carlin enters his fourth season with the Devils, coordinating the
special teams for the third straight year.
Before coming to FDU, Carlin spent
two seasons coaching at his alma
mater, Chancellor High School in
Fredericksburg, Virginia.
At Chancellor, he coached both the offensive and defensive
lines as well as the wide receivers.
Carlin played collegiate football at Wilkes, where he was a
two-time First Team All-Middle Atlantic Conference defensive
tackle and team captain in 1999. Carlin helped the Colonels
earn a trip to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southeast
Championship game in 1996 and then helped Wilkes return to that
game in 1999, when they beat FDU 27-6 for the title.
He lives in Easton, Pennsylvania with his wife Laurene.

The Conference
THE MASCAC
The Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation, formerly called the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference, and commonly known
as the MASCAC, originated in 1912 as a loose confederation of colleges. It was unified into an actual all-sports playing conference in 1952, and is the oldest and
largest Division III Conference holding NCAA associate membership. In 1999, spurred by changes in the NCAA championship structure, the Corporation formed as
an umbrella for three conferences – Freedom (Delaware Valley, DeSales, Drew, FDU-Florham, Kingʼs, Lycoming, Scranton, and Wilkes), Commonwealth (Albright,
Elizabethtown, Juniata, Lebanon Valley, Messiah, Moravian, Susquehanna, and Widener), and Middle Atlantic (all sixteen institutions).
Major changes were made during the 1993-94 school year. Ten schools left to form their own association. Their departure served as a catalyst for the remaining
sixteen schools whose presidents and athletic administrators formed a streamlined, efficient, dual-league organization. This "new look" was part of a national movement to consolidate similar institutions for competitive athletic opportunities while increasing presidential involvement in the setting of athletic policy.
The 1993-94 school year was also the year the Middle Atlantic Conference hired its first female Executive Director. Linda E. Hopple began her duties October
1, 1993 and served through May 8, 2000. Presently, Kenneth W. Andrews is the Executive Director. The Conference Office, housed at Widener University from
1988-1993, moved to the campus of Lebanon Valley College when Hopple was hired, and remains there.
A moratorium on new membership ended in June 1995. In December of that year, the Board accepted Allentown College (now DeSales University) as a new
member of the Middle Atlantic Conference, starting in the 1997-1998 academic year. DeSales University, a member of the Freedom Conference, replaced Upsala
College, which closed its doors at the end of the 1994-1995 academic year.
Currently, the Conference sponsors competition in twelve men's sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, lacrosse, soccer,
swimming, tennis, outdoor track and field, and wrestling. The eleven women's sports sponsored are: basketball, cross country, field hockey, indoor track and field,
lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, outdoor track and field, and volleyball.

2006 Outlook
SPECIAL TEAMS
Defensively, the Devils lose First Team
All-Conference free safety Billy D. Williams, but
return seven starters.
Senior captain Shane Hayes (Keansburg,
NJ) returns as the middle linebacker and leading tackler with 55 while also adding 2.5 sacks.
The outside linebacker spots will be up for grabs
as seniors Dan Mesday (Robbinsville, NJ) and
Tom Sharples (Maple Shade, NJ) and junior Rob
Felicetta (Brookhaven, NY), a converted wide
receiver, will vie for the two spots.
The defensive line has perhaps the most
depth of any position on the team with 11 players vying for playing time. The group will be led
by junior captain and defensive end Tom Capra
(Succasunna, NJ), who led the team in sacks a year
ago with four. Senior Mark Tynan (Hackettstown,
NJ) will start at one defensive tackle spot after
recording a sack and a blocked kick last year.
Junior K.C. Ogbonna (Cinnaminson, NJ) will be
the other defensive tackle. Competing to start at
the other defensive end spot will be junior Michael
McGowan (Hamilton, NJ), senior Michael Bremer
(Oakland, NJ), and sophomore Rich Nalepa
(Metuchen, NJ). Senior Eric Allen (Trenton, NJ),
junior Anthony Lawrence (Red Bank, NJ) and
sophomores Kevin Hatcher-Puryear (Orange,
NJ), Evan Hajiyerou (Upper Saddle River, NJ),
will provide depth at defensive tackle.
In the secondary, junior Michael Lotwich
(Dumont, NJ) returns at cornerback after tallying
27 tackles and three interceptions. Junior Justin
Williams (Mt. Laurel, NJ) will be the other corner
after sitting out last season. Senior Ted Vecchione
(East Hanover, NJ), and junior Joey DeSalle
(Linwood, NJ) will compete for the "nickel" spot.
Junior Jonathan Sacco (Chatham, NJ)
enters his second season as the starting strong
safety after collecting 37 tackles, two interceptions
and a forced fumble in 2005. Sophomores Vinny
Russo (Kenilworth, NJ), a converted quarterback, and Mark Waller (Hamilton, NJ) will provide
depth.
At free safety, junior Derek Gregory
(Stratford, NJ) will step in for the departed Williams
after registering 54 tackles and two interceptions
as a reserve last season. Junior Chris Ganley
(West Long Branch, NJ) and sophomore Dave
Johnson (Kendall Park, NJ) are the backups.
The Devils will have a new place kicker
and punter this season after the graduation of
Michael Rabasca. Sophomores Michael Barnard
(Eastampton, NJ) and Joe Minneci (Union, NJ)
will look to win the kicking duties while competing
with Huff to be the punter.
Vying for long snapping duties will be
Mesday and Greene, while Smeja and Lotwich will
see the majority of kick and punt returns.

2006 Outlook
After winning three out of their last four games
to close the season, the College at Florham Devils are
looking forward to a successful 2006 season.
The four Middle Atlantic Conference victories
in 2005 tied for the most since the 1999 campaign.
Head Coach Rich Mosca and the Devils welcome back
40 letterwinners from a season ago to make up the
most experienced squad in Mosca's tenure.
FDU will also welcome its fourth straight
recruiting class of over 50 players.
OFFENSE
On offense, the Devils return nine starters from
a team that averaged 336.9 yards and 23.5 points per
game.
Senior quaterback Dan Huff (Sayreville, NJ)
comes into the season on the verge of breaking several FDU passing records, including yards, attempts,
completions and touchdowns. Last season, Huff completed 52.0 percent of his passes for 1,561 yards and
15 touchdowns. He was also the leading rusher with
650 yards and nine scores.
At tailback, junior Dan Harrison (Trenton, NJ)
returns as the starter after rushing for 613 yards and a
touchdown. Also returning are junior Adam Lavalley
(Sparta, NJ) and senior Phil Sylvester (Brooklyn, NY).
Lavalley rushed for 257 yards and two touchdowns
while catching 11 pases for 88 yards and a score, while
Sylvester ran for 219 yards on just 33 carries (6.5 yards
per rush). Junior Dale Arena (Bloomingdale, NJ) and
sophomore Phil Greene (Oceanport, NJ) will also
compete for carries.
The fullback position is wide open with senior
Bill Kelly (Sewell, NJ), junior Chris Quackenbush
(Bayville, NJ) and sophomores Mike Anderson
(Princeton, NJ) and Mike Gobbo (Manchester, NJ)
competing for the job.
The receiving corps returns its top three passcatchers in seniors Dan Copp (Palisades Park, NJ),
Mike Smeja (Patchogue, NY) and David Nemeth
(Hamilton, NJ). Last season, Copp caught 23 passes
for 290 yards and three touchdowns, Smeja had 21
catches for 479 yards and seven scores, and Nemeth
pulled down 18 receptions for 220 yards and two
touchdowns. Also seeing action this year will be juniors
Tim Durkin (Cinnaminson, NJ), Ray Kwiatkowski
(Marlboro, NJ), Keven Martin (Sea Girt, NJ) and
Nick Perih (Howell, NJ) and sophomore Brandon
Schoonover (Manchester, NJ).
At tight end, sophomore Stephen Aich
(Sayreville, NJ) enters the season as the starter. Senior
28
Fairleigh Dickinson University Football
Jeremy Carr (Middlesex, NJ) also has playing experience and will challenge for playing time. Sophomore
Chuck Makatura (Belvidere, NJ) will also compete for
the job.
On the offensive line, the Devils return four
starters including junior captain Dom Palladino
(Oaklyn, NJ), who will move from right tackle to center. The left side of the line will be made up of sophomore Chris Archer (Yonkers, NY) at tackle and senior
Dewin Pugh (Pennsgrove, NJ) at guard. Sophomore
Adrian Shinn (Palmyra, NJ) will line up at right guard
while senior Sam Kiningham (Red Bank, NJ), a
transfer from Sacred Heart, and redshirt freshman
Jason Wrubel (West Long Branch, NJ) will battle it
out for the right tackle spot. Senior Robert Lovering
(Manchester, NJ) and sophomores Garrett Marron
(Middletown, NJ) and Tom Racioppi (East Hanover,
NJ) will give the Devils solid depth on the line.
