BATTLEFIELD TO BUILDING SITE
Terry Bryne, an injured war hero from Colchester has swapped his camouflage for the building site. Terry had
to have part of his leg amputated after he stood on an improvised explosive device while serving with the
Parachute Regiment in Afghanistan in 2008. Since his injury, Terry has gone on to achieve a place in the GB
Paralympic Cycling Team, obtaining several world records as well as winning a Gold Medal in the Team Sprint
at the 2011 Para-Cycling Track World Championships.

Terry now works full-time as an Assistant Site Manager for Persimmon Homes and is beginning to build a new career in
the building industry.
Terry has become one of the first to make the switch from battlefield to building site; Terry hasn’t let anything from his past
hold him back. The 30-year-old is keen to grow the business by inspiring ex-military to become skilled tradesmen, to join
his team and to encourage others to transfer their skills.

Terry put the tools through their pace mainly
using the circular saw for studwork and
roofing, the impact driver for hanging doors,
the combi drill for door frames and joints and
the angle grinder was powerful enough to cut through nails and concrete. All the tools
were perfect for the building site environment and made every day a breeze.

RETIRE YOUR TOOL
In the summer of 2015 Milwaukee® asked a selection of
non-Milwaukee® tradesmen to try out the new Milwaukee® 18V FUEL™
Percussion Drill for a trial period of 2 weeks. The selected panel of
tradesmen were then given the opportunity to put the new Milwaukee®
Drill through its paces. At the end of the trial period, the panel were
asked to make the choice of whether to destroy their existing tool or
join the Milwaukee® FUEL™ revolution.

are the norm, and often in
confined spaces where a
normal drill won’t be able to go. That’s not to say it won’t gain
use in other more common areas: drilling joists, studding for
pulling cables and running standard plumbing pipes.
I ran a set of holes with a 22mm auger through 300mm of
pine with consummate ease, the tool barely breaking sweat.
Equally impressive was fitting the tool with a 70mm holesaw
and drilling through a sandwich of OSB sheathing and sheet
steel: again a flawless performance.

The top-grip handle and long body kept the strain on the wrist
to a minimum, and that’s important on a drill that generates
powerful torque. The variable-speed trigger makes life easier
as well controlling the hole at the start and as you progress.

One thing that’s drilled into any
tradesman is to have a good drill!
It’s an essential part of the tool kit.
I didn’t know whether this little drill
would survive the big jobs. I guess
that’s why you shouldn’t judge a
book by its cover.
With 60 Nm of torque, it doesn’t
just talk the talk but walks the walk.
It drives the last screw of the day
straight into the material as if it was the first. The torque
setting has a large range from 1 to 18, allowing you to adjust
the setting to prevent the screws being driven too deep.
Although most drills have a drilling mode and a hammer drill
mode alongside their screwdriver mode, other drills don’t
thrive in the hammer setting like this does. The 2 speeds of
this drill even surpass the performance of those with 3 gears.

The M18™ Brushless Compact
Percussion Drill has the look
and feel of quality engineering. The level of torque
made easy work of screwing 2" x 4" frames together
with no pilot holes and the highly accurate torque
settings made selecting the countersink depth a
breeze. It was a similar story when it came to drilling
pipe routes with a 25mm spade bit. With the drill’s
duel speed setting set to 2 the M18™ ripped through
6" beams without difficulty.

Milwaukee® are working hard to prove their M18
FUEL™ cordless rotary drills can not only outperform
any 18V or 36V but corded drills as well.
We invited contractors in to test the drill on various
materials including concrete, brick and stone
which presented little obstruction to the M18™. The
feedback was that the drill is lightweight, comfortable
to use in all positions including inverse applications
and delivers excellent performance. It really is hard to
find anything negative to say about the M18™ range.

There are plenty of radios with Bluetooth
capability but this handy little Bluetooth
speaker does away with the radio and allows you to
stream music straight from your phone.
You get 25 hours off a 2AmHr 12 volt battery. You are
probably thinking that the phone will run out before
then but this speaker has a USB port that allows you to
charge your phone while it plays.
We had perfect reception through five thicknesses of
concrete walls over 25 metres. Even the presence of foil
faced insulation in the outside wall didn’t seem to bother it.
The speaker is high quality and gives a good tonal
range, backed up with an internal bass port.

For 2015 this is
a brand new bike
producing over
215bhp. The bike
is also extremely

0-60 in 2.6 seconds.
The Team
MICK SHANLEY – TEAM MANAGER
The garage is split into two with Broc Parkes’ bike on one side
and Josh Brookes’ on the other. Mick’s job is to lead both sides of
the garage and get the best result for both the individual riders and
the team. Each bike has a Crew Chief, making all the decisions for
the bike and riders preparation with two chassis mechanics who are
hands on with the bikes using their great mechanical skill to look after
the finely tuned race machines. We spoke with one chassis mechanic
from each side of garage to get an insight into their busy weekend
and how they use Milwaukee® Tools:
#MILWAUKEETOOL
IAN COLLIER – CHASSIS MECHANIC FOR BROC PARKES
Ian is responsible for Broc Parkes’ bike, he tells us that the bike’s setup is constantly
changed throughout the weekend to suit different conditions and the circuit so we
were lucky to catch 10 minutes from his busy
schedule. Ian uses both the M18™ and M12™ tools
throughout the race weekend.
On Ian’s workbench he shows us the 18 volt impact
wrench he uses on a regular basis, the M18 FUEL™
Compact Impact Wrench 3⁄8. Ian uses this on the
bike for jobs that require more power such as
removing wheels nuts. Being a FUEL™ product it
allows Ian to utilise the DRIVECONTROL™ to manage the speed and torque.
“The Drive control is a nice feature, it means I can use the wrench for both
removing and fastening”
The M18 CIW38 is used for taking wheel nuts off which isn’t a problem with a peak
torque of 265 Nm but for fastening the wheel nuts it’s important not to over tighten
and risk damage. The team then use DRIVECONTROL™ mode 1 to reduce the peak torque to 40 Nm which tightens the

JAKE WALKER – JUNIOR TEAM MECHANIC
Behind all the hard work and preparation that go directly into the bikes at the front of
the garage, Jake, the teams junior mechanic was hard at work preparing fairings and
bodywork to be fitted to the bikes. Using our HSS Thunderweb Drill Bits and the M18

Jake explained how he drilled 8 to 10mm holes in the delicate
and very expensive carbon fibre fairings. “To drill through
carbon fibre you need two things, a very sharp bit and a

Jake then ran the drill in speed 2 and in reverse, using the
precision and sharp edges of the Thunderweb Bits to cut

spoke, at the scrutineer’s bay having its official check for the
weekend. The pace of Josh’s bike wasn’t in question during
the weekend with Andy helping to prepare the bike that set
the fastest time in qualifying, a blistering 1:34.946.
