FOR OVER 40 YEARS THE NATIONAL BALLOON CLASSIC has
been one of the largest, and longest, hot air balloon events in the
Midwest. This year, Get Carried Away as nearly 100 hot air balloons
paint the Iowa sky with brilliant colors and lively Special Shapes.
Cheer on skilled pilots as they compete for points and prizes, sit
back and enjoy live music, grab a bite to eat, bounce with the
kiddos in Kids Land, buy a balloon ride for a one-of-a-kind view,
and prepare to be awestruck as dark skies come alive with a
mystical glow during Dawn Patrol and Nite Glow Extravaganza.
Great things await you during the spectacular 9-day event.
There is so much to see and do at the balloon field, but don’t
stop there. The fun at the field takes place every morning and
evening, which gives you all day to explore Indianola and Warren
County, home of the National Balloon Classic. Don’t miss the
Wacky Classic Parade as it winds its way around our treasured
town square that is sprinkled with unique shops, sips, and hidden
gems. Grab a cold root beer at Gib’s A&W Restaurant, an original
drive-in adventure, explore the National Balloon Museum where
you’ll find over 200 years of ballooning history, visit one (or all) of
Warren County’s award-winning wineries or distilleries, and don’t
miss the Warren County Fair, a premiere family-friendly event
July 27-August 1.

event merchandise, and necessities like bug spray
and sun screen. Don’t forget to take a selfie inside the
balloon gondola!
No refunds or wind/rain checks. Times are approximate and
schedule may change without notice. All events at the National
Balloon Classic are dependent on prevailing weather conditions
and subject to weather delays or cancellations. The safety of
our pilots, volunteers, and spectators is our primary concern.
Purchased tickets may be used on any day during the 2016
National Balloon Classic. Unused tickets are not refundable.

HOW DO I GET TO THE NATIONAL BALLOON CLASSIC?
The National Balloon Classic takes place at the National Balloon Classic Memorial Balloon Field,
which is located east of Indianola on Hwy 92. From the intersection of Hwy 69 and Hwy 92, go east
two miles and follow balloon traffic signs. Caution: the physical address is 15335 Jewell Street,
Indianola, Iowa. Avoid GPS directions that include 150th Avenue, which is closed during the event.
HOW EARLY SHOULD I ARRIVE AT THE BALLOON FIELD?
MORNING: With the exception of Dawn Patrol days, morning traffic is typically light with selfparking. For Dawn Patrol, arrive at 5:00 a.m. when gates open (bring a flashlight). For regular
morning flights, arriving 30 minutes early should be sufficient.
EVENING: Evening crowds can be quite large; arriving as early as possible is highly recommended
especially on weekends and Nite Glow Extravaganza. Evening gates open at 4:00 p.m.
HOW DO I PURCHASE TICKETS?
Tickets may be purchased at the balloon field, cash only. Once inside the gates, ATM’s are located
on the east and west end inside the balloon field gates. Go cashless and purchase your tickets
online through our website at NationalBalloonClassic.com.
WHEN DO THE BALLOONS FLY?
Balloons are scheduled to fly each day at 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. During these times, winds are
calmest and the air is most stable. All events at the National Balloon Classic are dependent on
prevailing weather conditions and subject to weather delays or cancellations. Although every
effort is made for a successful balloon launch/land, the safety of our pilots, volunteers, and
spectators is our primary concern. Flight decisions are made during Pilot Briefings, which are
held approximately 30 minutes before each flight. If extreme weather conditions exist, notices will
be posted via social media and our Public Information line. Taking a “wait and see” approach will
probably result in arriving at the field too late and missing a beautiful night of balloon gazing.
HOW DO BALLOONS COMPETE?
Hot air balloon competition is based on flying accuracy rather than speed. Pilots compete in
several different competitions every morning and evening; however, morning competition is
for points, which determines the overall winner of the National Balloon Classic/North Central
Regional Championship.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO THE BALLOON FIELD?
Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating. A limited number of chairs are available to rent for $2 per chair.
Our 150-acre balloon field is an open, grassy space that provides perfect views from all areas of the field.
ARE PETS ALLOWED AT THE BALLOON FIELD?
No, pets are not allowed. Service animals are allowed.

IS SMOKING ALLOWED AT THE BALLOON FIELD?
Absolutely no smoking is allowed at the balloon field. No smoking includes electronic cigarettes.
CAN I BRING MY OWN FOOD AND BEVERAGES?
We have a variety of food and beverage vendors at the balloon field including a beer tent. No outside food,
beverages, or coolers are allowed. Bags and backpacks are subject to inspection.
WHERE CAN I PURCHASE BALLOON SOUVENIRS?
Official apparel, souvenirs, and essentials like bug spray and sunscreen may be purchased at the Gift Shop located
inside the main entrance to the east.
WHAT IF THE BALLOONS DON’T FLY?
Weather delays and wind-related cancellations are out of our control; however, ensuring each guest has a
wonderful experience is our primary goal. Great bands, great food, and other forms of entertainment, including
Kids Land activities, make the National Balloon Classic affordable and fun.
WHAT IS THERE TO DO DURING THE DAY?
Hot air balloons do not fly during the heat of the day; therefore, after the morning flights, the balloon field gates
remain locked until the evening session. This is the perfect time to explore our great community. From Wacky
parades to wineries, to Bike Night and Music, Indianola and Warren County have many great things to do and see.
And no trip to the National balloon Classic is complete without a visit to the National Balloon Museum and U.S. Hall
of Fame, which is home to over 200 years of ballooning history!

Ballooning Ambassadors. The National Balloon Classic is a nonprofit organization that
requires 200+ volunteers who help in all areas during the event. Volunteers provide guest
services, gate security, hospitality, and chase crew assistance.

• Must be available to work during the National Balloon Classic dates (July 29 – August 6)
• Basic required training depending on specific job*
*Chase crew volunteers have additional training requirements
