A new world is opening up for accordion education - a world
of HD video lessons available anywhere, anytime. Learning to
play accordion has never been more accessible.
IT HAS been years in the making. A project
so big and exciting that it has brought
Patricia Bartell of Able To Play Music
into a partnership with Hohner, worldrenowned teacher Frédéric Deschamps,
world champion Grayson Masefield, and
2x Grammy award winner Joel Guzmán.
This project has brought quality accordion
education online in the form of step-by-step
HD video lessons at AccordionLife.com.
This has been a groundbreaking endeavor
for us at Able To Play Music, as we continue
PATRICIA BARTELL

to forge ahead and lay the groundwork
for the beginner to advanced courses on
the website under the direction of Patricia
Bartell.
PATRICIA BARTELL is a professional
musician who has performed in
numerous international competitions,
and travels worldwide as the USA Judge
for international championship Trophée
Mondial. She holds a BA in Accordion
Performance and Music Education.
Patricia is bringing her extensive
experience to AccordionLife.com for the
Piano Accordion and Chromatic Core
Curricula, Rhythm, Ear Training, Music
Theory, Technical Skills, Reading and other
special supplementary materials. She also
brings her expertise to a course on “The
Art of Musical Expression." To date, we
have released the Preliminary and Level 1
Courses for Piano Accordion. Over time, we
will have a full online video curriculum for
Piano Accordion, Chromatic Accordion,
and the Diatonic Accordion.
ONE OF the first available courses on
AccordionLife.com is the Deschamps
Technique. During Frédéric Deschamps’ visit
to our studio in January for Master Classes,
we had the honor of working with him to
FRÉDÉRIC DESCHAMPS
GRAYSON MASEFIELD
bring his groundbreaking techniques to
film. Frédéric Deschamps has built many
world champions with his technique and
training, including Grayson Masefield
(New Zealand), Pietro Adragna (Italy),
Petar Maric (Serbia) and Jerome Richard
(France). We are excited and honored
that he has partnered with us to bring his
techniques to the world via HD video.
IN JULY, we welcomed Grayson Masefield
to Spokane for master classes and a
concert featuring his virtuosic talent.
Grayson is a world champion many
times over and now travels the world
teaching and performing. During his
time here, we worked with Grayson on
his course, General Mechanics of the
Accordion, which covers how the
accordion works, different systems of
accordions, accordion effects and
tips for playing successfully.
JOEL GUZMÁN is a 2x Grammy

HOHNER ENDORSEE Joel Guzmán is a twotime Grammy Award-winning musician who
has been teaching accordion after school
at UT Elementary School since 2013. The
Washington native is the son of migrant
Guzmán learned the accordion from his
father, Guadalupe Guzmán. “My father
was not formally trained,” Guzmán said.
“He had an informal background, so I had
a trained ear like a lot of the students here.
Using techniques my dad shared with me,
I’ve been able to simplify the instrument for
them ... It’s not just a stereotypically Mexican
musical instrument.”
Guzmán says that being able to teach UT

such a textured and global history expands
their horizons by giving them a deeper
appreciation for the accordion’s place in

workers who loved playing Tejano and
Conjunto music at their family gatherings. Guzmán was a child prodigy and began
playing accordion when he was four years
old. Currently an adjunct professor in the
Butler School of Music, Guzmán said that
it was a meeting with Mickey Klein after a
private performance that led to his popular
accordion class for third, fourth, and fifth
graders. Intrigued by what Guzmán calls his
squeezebox, Klein invited Guzmán to teach
the accordion to students twice a week. Hohner, which has been manufacturing
accordions for over 100 years, provided the
accordions for the school program.

THE PORTATOS AT THE BING CROSBY THEATER
THIS HAS been a fun year for The Portatos
Modernized Accordion Band and we have
seen growth in both the band and our skills
as musicians.
On July 2, we were honored to be part
of a concert at the Bing Crosby Theater.
The evening was kicked off with the
amazing musicianship of Spokane’s Tango
Volcado with Patricia Bartell. The skill of
Tango Volcado is inspiring, both in live
performances as well as on their new CD
“Milonga Del Angel."
The Portatos took to the stage after Tango
Volcado – and had the honor of being
joined by Patricia Bartell as well as our new

drummer, John ‘Instant Potato’ Brogan.
We also had the pleasure of surprising the
audience with the newest and youngest
member, Reagan ‘String Potato' Ivey, who
is a very talented violinist. Our performance
included the theme from Marvel’s Avengers
as well as Gorka Hermosa’s composition
‘Anantango.'
The concert finale exhibited the virtuosic
talent of world champion Grayson
Masefield. Grayson began his program
with a selection of classical music and
continued through variety. He included
a performance of a piece that Gorka
Hermosa composed for him called ‘Ka
Mate’, inspired by a war chant of the
indigenous Maori people of New Zealand
– Grayson’s homeland. The evening was
a complete success and demonstrated
even more to the audience the diversity
of musical styles achievable with the
accordion.
IN THE past few months we have welcomed
several new members to the group, though
we’re still working on nicknames! Currently
there are about 12 musicians involved in

drums, percussion and violin!

BY CORRIE SAMS | PHOTOS BY YEV NOSOV
A LOT of work goes into any curriculum,
let alone an online video curriculum.
More goes into a 30-second clip of
film than many people think. There are
months of planning the curriculum,
scripting it, preparing the design of
the graphics and any props we need,
designing the film room, setup on film
day, lighting, audio and camera settings
to get everything just right.
THEN THERE’S hairspray and makeup ...
and lots of coffee and Pepsi.
It’s a lot of work, but so worth it. We
have a team that knows how to work
together and use its individual skills to
make accordion education accessible
to everyone, anywhere and anytime.
Corrie Sams assists with the
hairspray for Patricia Bartell.

setup is correct for filming.

ACCORDION LIFE FEATURED COURSES
The Deschamps Technique
It’s the technique that creates world champions, created
by world-renowned teacher Frédéric Deschamps.
PETAR MARIC, Grayson Masefield, Jérôme
Richard, Julien Gonzales, Phil Bouvier -- The
list of world champions who have studied
under Frédéric Deschamps goes on and on,
almost seeming endless. A wold champion
himself, Frédéric Deschamps has worked to
raise the bar of accordion technique and
performance. He continues to study and
improve his technique training.
THE DESCHAMPS Technique involves the
whole body, for the whole body is involved
when performing with the accordion.
Every move is considered and practiced so
that when you play, your movements are
working for you ... and not against you. It’s
a technique that works with any level of
playing, and when you have truly grasped the
concepts and the application, it can take you
as far as you want to go. Find his course on

General Mechanics of the Accordion
World Champion Grayson Masefield explains how the accordion
works and how this applies to making various effects.
WINNER OF multiple world championships,
Grayson Masefield of Aukland New Zealand
has studied the accordion since early
childhood. Grayson trained classically at The
University of Aukland with Stephanie Poole
and has studied extensively under Frédéric
Deschamps. In 2009, Grayson became the
first competitor to win first place in both
the classical and virtuoso entertainment
categories of the Coupe Mondial.
IN JUNE of 2015, the staff of Accordion Life
had the priviledge of working with Grayson
to film his Course, General Mechanics of
the Accordion. In this course, Grayson
takes us on a scholaraly journey through
the workings of the accordion, the different
systems of accordions, dynamics, articulation
and several effects such as note distortion,
vibratos, percussive effects and more.

Technique

New Approach Technique
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY OR A
SERIES OF SIMPLE PARAMETERS
THOSE WHO have seen me teaching, they
know I always address the technical issues
the same way, whether the accordionist is
a beginner, junior, senior or world champion
apprentice, and for good reason…they
all have the same fault -- they play the
accordion. J
the many parameters required for the
performance of your technical passage
with assurance, hassle-free.
I am fortunate in my everyday life to
be both a teacher and a student -- an
accordion teacher, of course, and a
student in a totally different discipline:
horseback riding. You never will see a rider
training for any major performance without
the observation and feedback of a coach.
This is for good reason,
it is impossible to
control everything in
these situations, since
the feeling is the same
sensation that should
be used for any type
of performance. The
feeling (feeling of
movement for riding)
and music for the accordion is about the
same, or at least involves the same qualities
of the performer, since everything depends
on the movement.
“A difficult issue is
nothing but a series
or accumulation of
simple things”
A difficult issue is
nothing but a series
or accumulation of
simple things. I’ve
repeated many
times that the error,
whether technical,
mnemonic or musical,
is simply the result
of a previous problem. What does the
accordionist (the small, the great, the good,
the not so good ... all!) do? He cultivates
his mistake, his misunderstanding, develops
it, and finally resigns himself. And how does
all this happen? Oh, it’s simple, he repeats
the technical transition 5, 10, 15, 20 times ...
[trial & error] hoping he will have better luck
next time. At this level of playing, you should
already feel concerned.
So, in your defense, I will admit that it is
impossible to correct oneself, to control
15
Accordion Life Today | Winter 2015 | accordionlife.com
THE MOVEMENT CREATES SOUND
In my teaching, I remind students to work
in front of a mirror to check a few things
essential to achieving effective bellows
changes. You need only to pay attention
to a few specific points and the exercise
becomes more simple. As I said previously,
the difficulty lies in the multitude of
perameters to control. One could compare
the situation to a tangled ball of yarn. It
doesn’t do any good to get frustrated.
Trade your frustration for patience and try to
find the right end of the yarn.
“Making improvements or
changes is only possible
through reflection...”
So, as you are alone with your accordion
and your mirror, I’ll slip you some tips to
organize a few things before playing -limiting potential room for errors.
Take the example of riding, the rider would
never dream of working his horse on
ground that is too hard, or too soft, with
holes or bumps, causing serious injury to
the horse which lessens the
desired outcome. It is critical
to maintain the ground of the
training location before
attempting to work with
your horse: to groom
and care for
the surface
to maintain
solidity and
evenness of
the ground.
This is
logical, is it
not?
It is
exactly
the same
in regards
to the
regularity
of your
FRÉDÉRIC DESCHAMPS - accordion teacher
& student in horseback riding.
16
Accordion Life Today | Winter 2015 | accordionlife.com
keyboard. I know from experience that this is
not a concern for many and I won’t cast a
stone at you. This is the first cause of error for
my apprentice world champions who are at
the highest technical level, so why not even
you?
I have already written several teaching
sequences about this, but I have to
develop new small tricks for some artists
-- as is the case for Pavel Zyabko (Russia).
He is extremely talented musically,
artistically, and technically, but like any selfrespecting talent, he uses his reflex. Making
improvements or changes is only possible
through reflection. On the contrary. The artist
that plays only by reflex
finds it nearly impossible
to improve the parts
of the music that
already are
mastered.
I, therefore,
offer you
small, simple
exercises
to develop
qualities
necessary for the
proper use of your
instrument.
ELASTICITY OF
KEYBOARDS
I mentioned earlier the importance of a
quality surface on which a rider with his
horse would move. Now it’s our turn to
improve the soil on which we will work:
keyboards.
The regularity of the tension and elasticity
of your keyboard lies in the regularity of
the action force -- the left side. Basically,
to play without too many hitches requires
your left arm to pull in the same direction,
1
consistently and regularly, without accents,
without violence, neither too strong nor too
weak. To aid in this, keep the elbow of the
left arm out and away from the accordion
as seen in Photo 1 on the previous page.
Play each note
of your first
row two times,
going up five
to six keys. Then
do the same,
going back
down, using
only the index
finger. Photos 4 and
5 demonstrate this
process.
“a technical difficulty is only
an accumulation of simple
things, we will first take care
of the simple things.”
The regular tension on the bellows causes
the suction on the instrument’s valves to
be even. The keyboard is neither too hard
nor too soft. It feels “elastic,” meaning that
each time you touch a key, you would feel
a “trampoline” effect that will help you play
with effortless touch.
The best way to experience this sensation
is to practice this exercise on a single note,
without trying to achieve an accuracy with
a musical text. If, as I said earlier, a technical
difficulty is only an accumulation of
simple things, we will first take
care of the simple things.
VOLTAGE &
REBOUND
Hold your fingers as
shown in Photo 2.
2
3
17
You can affix a small
coin between thumb
and index finger as
shown in Photo 3
to control your
fingers without
thinking. This
helps keep your
fingers gathered
naturally during
the exercise.
Accordion Life Today | Winter 2015 | accordionlife.com
4
After you have returned
to your starting point,
move your position to
the second row and
repeat the exercise, always
playing each note twice
to feel the response
of the keyboard.
Always keep a regular
tempo, and repeat
the exercise on the
3rd, 4th, and 5th rows
of your accordion.
Photo 6 shows the
position of the arm for
the 4th row.
5
6
This exercise focuses on the chromatic
‘button’ keyboard, but of course you may
do this on a piano keyboard by replacing
rows by color: 1st row = white keys, 2nd row
= black keys. See Photos 7 and 8 on the next
page.
Once you are familiar with this exercise, you
can change as follows:
• Start in the 2nd row; play a note two times,
then jump directly to the 3rd row, play a
note two times, then jump directly to the 1st
row, and so on. Always keep an even tempo
(speed) and the same articulation (sound).
• Increase the number of repetions on each
note, moving up to three times, four times,
etc.
• Gradually increase the
tempo of the exercise always maintaining even
playing and articulation.
I don’t have time to explain the entire
process here. You can learn more about
this and other techniques in my course
Deschamps Technique on AccordionLife.com
Good luck jumping on your notes, I return to
jumping with my horses.

THERE ARE three real passions in
my life, my husband, travel and
food, all vying for first place. My
wanderlust has taken me around
the globe to six continents where
I have experienced many great
meals and learned a lot about
regional cuisine. I have worked
in the food and travel industry for
25 years, which included owning
"The Wanderlust's Kitchen"
catering company and being
co-owner of a national award
winning Italian restaurant.
There is nothing like the
memories of the music and food
and their sounds and smells
to transport you back to the
unforgettable experience of
a visit to a foreign land. It is a
pleasure to share with you my
version of the recipes adapted
from the taste of my travels
around the world.

IT HAS BEEN A PRIVILEDGE to
compile and edit this first issue of
Accordion Life Today. Working
with Patricia Bartell and the rest
of the Accordion Life staff is very
rewarding, especially being
part of such a huge project that
helps others enjoy music and the
accordion as much as I do.
If you have any news, events or
accordion-related stories you
would like to share or see in a
future issue, email them to:

See you in the next issue!
