Funds raised will be used to send young girls from the Tigard & Tualatin High Schools to attend the week long Girls State event at Willamette University in Salem, OR. PERSONAL STORY: I played at the event for 2½ hours. During that time people came, ate & left. However, one elderly couple stayed from start to finish. I noticed that while I played the gentleman would often cry (I didn’t think my playing was that bad). At the end of the evening, he and his wife approached me. He stated in broken, hard to understand speech that he played an Iorio accordion. I asked if he would like to play my accordion and he said yes. He tentatively commenced playing and I could tell he knew what he was doing, even if he didn’t always hit the right keys. His wife said that he had a stroke about a year and a half ago and that this was the first time he had played an accordion since that event. I now understood why he occasionally broke out in tears during my performance, he was remembering how he used to be able to play the instrument and now couldn’t. I told him he needed to start playing again, that it would assist him in recovering from his stroke. Told him that if he did that, next year he should bring his accordion to the event and we would play some songs together. His eyes lit-up and he said he would do that. I hope I see him again next year - with his accordion.
