This unique group plays the romantic music you would hear in the famous Grinzing quarter of Vienna - the
music capital of the world - with its many Gasthauses and Cafes adorned with the music of accordion and violin playing in an intimate setting the music of Vienna … the music of Johann Schrammel, the gypsy music of
Hungary, as well as other European and world classics, while local patrons and tourists sample the latest harvest in this wine-making region of Vienna. With musicians dressed in formal attire and a repertoire including
classical music from Europe, this chamber-like group is an excellent choice to provide the music for elegant
public or private events, such as the cocktail hour preceding the dinner at your wedding or anniversary celebration, or a gala ballroom filled with dancers to a Strauss Waltz. This ensemble can be embellished with the superb vocals of Liana Braunova for a wider repertoire representative of all of Europe, or with percussion for

Our Super Bowl Sunday turned out to be a Super Music day for the attendants of the SVAS
meeting. We still had about 50 folks show up to hear good music in spite of the big game.
In the future it was suggested that we move the meeting off the calendar that the Super Bowl
will occupy. We will take this up next year so everyone can hear the tunes of the greatest in
instrumentals of our club.
Garland & I started off jamming about 12:30. We didn’t have an audience to start with but
had a good time.

We had a great performance from the Tangonero Band. They sounded very practiced, playing the Tango oriented music. It is amazing how popular a German instrument would become to a continent a world away.

early, as they played jazz, country and western,
classic and sing-along music. One of my favorites is Sentimental Journey. It was my
pleasure to play for a while, and Ken Caple
played Beyond the Reef, Cool Water, The
Cuckoo Waltz, Patricia and Perfidia.
Bill Tapogna introduced us to Dan Judd, who
is setting up the new microphones and other
helpful devices. Thank you, Dan we need a
good sound man.

Bill Tapogna announced that Carmella, Francis, Mary Savant, Norma
Zonay Parsons, Al and Bernie were each another year older. Happy
Birthday!
Edward Massolo entertained us with some Italian pieces called Carnival of Venice, Come Back to Sorrento and Chitarra Romana. After
Le Gamin De Paris, he Romanticized us again with Non Dimenticar.
With that piece and with Flight of the Angels, Edward displayed phenomenal fingering! His finale was Spanish Eyes. Then Edward and
Bill Tapogna played El Rio Drive Polka and Francis and Stan danced
to that one.
Don Savant, our jazz player, did Moonglow, These Too Foolish Things, Serenade in Blue, Misty, Chewing the Rag,
Muskrat Ramble and Beautiful Days. Tah Dah!
Raffle time; John won the Hofbrau Meal Ticket and an orchid, Rosemary won the statue, Dennis won the candy, Rick
won the candy, Kathleen won an orchid, Karol won the CD and Ray won the chardonnay.

Our featured players, TANGONERO, made us all want to
tango. Alex Roitman, the bandoneon player, started out with the
first tango. Then Amy Zanrosso, on the keyboard, Michel
Walther, on the violin, and Jacob Johnson, on the bass guitar,
joined Alex, and they played very danceable music! The keyboard gives much emphasis to the music. The bass guitar gives
definite clarity to the bass notes, and the violin gives sweet high
notes and detail to the melody. TANGO!

The Bandoneon
The bandoneon (or bandonion, Spanish: bandoneón) is a type
of concertina particularly popular in Argentina, Uruguay, and
Lithuania. It is an essential instrument in most tango ensembles
from the traditional orquesta típica of the 1910s onwards, and in
folk music ensembles of Lithuania.
a. The bandoneon, so named by the German instrument dealer,
Heinrich Band (1821–1860), was originally intended as an instrument for religious and popular music of the day, in contrast
to its predecessor, more folk music inclined German concertina
(or Konzertina).[1]:16 Around 1870, German and Italian immigrants and sailors brought the instrument to Argentina, where it
was adopted into the nascent genre of tango music, a descendant
of the earlier milonga.[2]

By 1910 bandoneons were being produced expressly for the Argentine and Uruguayan markets, with 25,000 shipping to Argentina in 1930 alone. However, declining popularity and the disruption of German manufacturing in World War II led to an
end of bandoneon mass-production.[1]:17
Original instruments are displayed in German museums, such as the Bandoneon Museum der Familie Preuss in Lichtenberg
and the collection of the family Steinhart in Kirchzarten, Freiburg.
Bandoneons were historically produced primarily in Germany, and were never produced in Argentina itself despite their popularity. As a result, by the 2000s, vintage bandoneons had become rare and expensive (US$4,000), limiting prospective bandeonists. Accordingly, in 2014 the National University of Lanus in Buenos Aires announced their development of an affordable
Argentine-made bandoneon, which they hope to market for one-third to one-half of the cost of vintage instruments
Play
As with other members of the concertina family, the bandoneon is held
between both hands, with pushing and pulling motions forcing air through
its bellows, which is routed through reeds by pressing its buttons. As a
concertina, the bandoneon's buttons travel parallel with the bellows, versus perpendicular on an accordion.
Unlike a piano accordion, but similar to a melodeon or Anglo concertina,
a given bandoneon button produces different notes on the push and the
pull (bisonoric). This means that each keyboard actually has two layouts:
one for opening notes, and one for closing notes. Since the right and left
hand layouts are also different, a musician must learn four different keyboard layouts to play the instrument.[1]:18
These keyboard layouts are not structured to facilitate playing scale passages of single-notes, but rather to facilitate playing chords as per its
original purpose of supporting singers of religious music in small
churches with no organ or harmonium, or for clergy requiring a portable
instrument (missionaries, traveling evangelists, army & navy chaplains,
etc.)
