Harbour Light No15 is packed with news and features from Suffolk Yacht Harbour and our fantastic group of affliliated companies who make this yacht harbour so uniquely different from any other. No15 SHELLEY ROBINSON chandlery assistant 1960s John Illingworth classic gets the full SYH treatment S helley is the smiling face of the chandlery at Suffolk Yacht Harbour and continues to love the job she talked her way into four years ago. Which wasn’t difficult. With many years sailing under her belt on the luxury charter yacht circuit around the Caribbean, USA and Mediterranean - not to mention nine Atlantic crossings - she ticked all the boxes! Shelley grew up around boats, even learning to walk Racing Navaho on the ample decks of her father’s 1924 built, 46ft Channel Yawl, Klang II. This wonderful old yawl was originally used as an English Channel pilot boat, ferrying passengers beween Plymouth and the Channel Islands. In recent years Klang has enjoyed a gentler life on the American eastern seaboard. Dragon’s Den Nowadays, Shelley gets her sailing fixes at the sharp end of Rick Gillingham’s successful Dragon Navaho, based at Aldeburgh Y C. This Petticrow built boat is pretty quick and results have been as high as runners-up at the Dragon Nationals. Shelley has a son Jake, 19, who lives in Bournemouth. . “What’s the nicest thing about working at Suffolk Yacht Harbour” she was asked? “The lovely people I work with” she replied. John Robinson’s vintage gaff yawl, Klang II. T his excellent example of a John Illingworth designed, long keel, 36-foot bermudan sloop belongs to Mr Graham Peck who usually keeps her berthed on elsewhere on the east coast. Her hull, unusually, for a boat of this period, is constructed of cold moulded mahogany on oak frames. The yard has replaced large areas of the main cockpit bulkhead and also carried out repairs to the seating, teak decking and cockpit coaming. The deck superstructure, cabin sides, toerails and bulwark cappings are all getting seven coats of traditional varnish from Mick McCarthy (above) who has also refurbished and varnished the instrument console and transom capping rail. 20% OFF! The chandlery has negotiated some amazing discounts from LEWMAR. We have 20% off major items such as Bow Thrusters & Winches ! ! These Discounts are only available before january 2009 - especially if you require fitting - for which we need you to book in as early as possible. Classic fleet breaks the 60 barrier F or yet another year, the remarkable Classic Regatta, staged at Suffolk Yacht Harbour , increased its numbers over the previous year. For the first time the event attracted over 60 wooden, classic yachts. Once again, the Kim Holman designed, 25ft Stellas were out in strength with no less than eleven of these ever-popular cruiser-racers on the startline. Whatever the weather, these little classics revelled in the conditions, proving as competitive in Saturday’s fresh breeze as they were slippery in the light conditions on the Sunday. Congratulations to Tom Taylor Jones and ‘Estrella’ for taking 1st overall. The rest of the fleet was as varied as it was spectacular with the two majectic 8 metres perhaps taking the most breath away. The highly competitive West Solent One Designs were again, well represented while the 45ft cutter “Croix des Gardes” certainly caught the eye. The Saturday night partying was also a great success in the stylish new Harbour Room. Full racing results are available on the website: www.syharbour.co.uk Next year’s Regatta will be held on 13/14 June 2009. Details from the SYH office. Class 1 starters reaching out of Harwich Harbour. Continued on Back Page t Staff Profile ‘Chamois’ Mr Stainless it really is. Beryl joins the Magic circle S Beryl Chalmers o it was that, one day, a few weeks ago this nice lady brought in her very tidy Gibsea 312 Chipper in need of a new Harken furling gear. Nice little job. We got chatting and discovered that Beryl keeps her boat on a mooring in the Walton Channel - having bought it in Greece three years earlier, sailed it with friends to the South of France and then put her on a lorry to Essex ! It then transpired that she had spent 6 years in her 20s co-building a 48’ ferro ketch in a Backwaters mud-berth. Beryl also has a solid background in publishing and journalism as well as working for a London flotilla company with 150 yachts in Greece. Now she’s working for Rig Magic on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and has been thrown in at the deep end organising our new website. ‘IRIS MAY’ - CLASSIC MOTOR SAILER Peter Duck GTi W e have a client with a classic Peter Duck class ketch - similar to the two examples at the top of the page. A classic design from Laurent Giles of which about 40 were built, mostly by Porter & Haylett of Great Yarmouth. The Peter Duck design is well known for its passage-making qualities and easy single-handed management. But . . . they are heavy and SLOW! So we did away with the two stumpy sticks and designed a tall masthead sloop rig with a short bowsprit to increase the foretriangle by nearly 100%. Now the old girl has some ‘oomph’ (while remaining as safe as houses) and the owner is thrilled to bits! W e are currently engaged in a complete rig refit for Josephine- a 51’ Andre Hoek designed aluminium cutter. This very beautiful yacht has recently returned from the Arctic Circle and Norway and our brief is a complete rig overhaul including new standing rigging, carbon spinnaker pole, revised handling systems, boom respray - plus a Code 0 (free flying headsail) system and upgraded deck gear. This before setting sail for new adventures! A nother complete rig refurbishment for Houdalinqua, a Sigma 41 with which we are well ‘Josephine’ beamreaching under all plain sail We recently made this attractive boarding ladder for the motor sailer ‘Lewarne’ . The treads were made in the SYH workshop. ‘Iris May’ looking good for her 60 years. As well as all the new Mr Stainless metalwork, she has been re-rigged and re-decked. Newly powered up Peter Duck heading into some ‘woolly’ weather. Josephine & Houdalinqua Boarding Ladder acquainted, having re-rigged her in the past prior to long distance travels. Her owners are planning a trip to Brazil, South Africa and far flung destinations along the way. Her route will take them away from easy repair and replacement facilities and we are proud to have been entrusted with working on their travelling home. A little off the ‘beaten track’ for us - compared to our ‘bread and butter,’ grp fishing boats and speed boats. But we very much enjoyed working on this lovely old lady. Built in 1947 by Feltham Bros at Kings Boatyard from mahogany on oak frames, she displaces six and a half tons and is powered by a BMC 4-litre Commodore diesel. We have replaced the stanchions, guard-rails, pulpit and pushpit. Owner Paul Field commented that Mark and Tim had done a great job.” AQUAFISH 23 The Aquafish 23 is a spacious, 23’ x 8’ fishing/dive boat with deep, safe gunwales. There’s plenty of deck space for six to fish in comfort. Ruggedly built in GRP, there’s a lockable wheelhouse forward with full standing headroom. Power is supplied by outboard engines from 75hp to 175 hp. These strong little fishing boats are built locally and brought here for the addition of our pulpits, guardrails and radar arches. OFFSHORE 2000 We are about to fit out several of these very successful, 30 ft, fishing/dive/charter boats. They are very tough, displace 3-tonnes and can accommodate inboard engines up to 450hp. This is good business as they will carry a lot of stainless steel with extensive, stretched pulpits, long guardrails surrounding the huge cockpits and - usually - radar arches as well. The boats are being moulded at Wadebridge in Cornwall and are then shipped up country for final fitting out. Aquafish 23 being prepared for her metalwork HALBERG RASSY IN A RUSH The owner of this Halberg Rassy yacht had been quoted eight weeks to produce and fit a custom stainless stemhead fitting for this ‘high holding’ power, self-launching, CQR anchor. We did it in two. Or reclining with one’s naked back on warm Mediterranean varnish, keeping a weather eye on the immaculate leech of a very expensive double taffeta mainsail. Yeah right. How about hours – days even – spent wrestling a 21’ Mini-Transat racer around the North Sea in 35 knots of wind, trying to keep the boat under control and hypothermia at bay! It is as they say, experience that counts! SmartSail Technology Back to the Spirit 76. This yacht is flying the latest ‘Fusion M’ Double Taffeta sails. Unlike other high performance cruising sails which use pre-made composite panels assembled in a tri-radial configuration, Fusion M cruising sails are engineered as full size membranes with custom fiber mapping tailored to Life at the sharp end . . . . . . some poor soul’s got to do it! John Parker at the sharp end of a new Spirit 76 - adding his special ‘touch and feel’ to the headsail. the sail’s design purpose and expected usage. A dense fibre matrix (in the case of the Spirit 76 Vectran) can be sandwiched between rugged woven polyester taffetas, creating a ‘smart structure’ that integrates and shares loadings evenly throughout the whole sail. Fusion Smartsails are easier to trim, (less adjustment is needed to preserve optimum shaping), and more durable over the long haul. Fusion M sails are engineered like no other. Fusion Smartsails put you in control, minimizing heel, and maximizing upwind performance. Like all Quantum cruising sails, they are built to take on the most ambitious sailing plans. Every construction detail is executed to the highest possible standards to insure ultimate offshore reliability. Containterised, climate controlled sail storage Improving our bespoke canvas work e now have - and are ready to launch to the world the ultimate sail storage solution. We’ve invested in a full size 40’ x 8’ x 8’ container, with on-board climate control - maintaining an even 15ºC, with a steady, even flow of air throughout. It’s fitted out for efficient storage of rolled and bagged sails, so that however long your sails have been in the container, we can always get to them straight away. O W ur very skilled canvas worker – David Shutt – has recently completed an intensive upholstery course at Bury St. Edmunds with a speciality towards the finer points of cushion design and production. David plays a full role in our canvas department and his work includes the highly skilled job of leather covering of steering wheels, rigging screws, blocks and hardware. CUSTOM STAIRS It’s been another busy 6 months up at the farm with a lot of staircases and . . . BALUSTRADES to do like this one for the new entrance to the Chandlery (see p.7) Keep a weather eye open for our exciting new website which will be going live in November. Packed with features and special offers, it’s not to be missed. W Over the winter months, leaving your sails bent on and covered (even with one of our quality boom covers!) is detrimental to your sails’ health and possibly your pocket! There is no excuse to neglect your sails this winter, even neatly flaked mainsails (covered or otherwise) and carefully furled headsails will deteriorate dramatically when the weather turns harsh. Getting your sails ashore, professionally valeted and stored will not only improve their performance but will ensure that they will last longer and defer replacement costs. David’s machining skills are usually associated with sailcoats, dodgers, sprayhoods and cockpit covers. Now he has acquired the skill to produce marine upholstery - from basic rectangular cockpit cushions to complicated, compound curves . There will be maximum capacity over the winter period so why not pop in for a quotation. S W I S S R O P E T E C H N O LO G Y Haven’t tried it yet? - It’s high time you did! A simply astounding 25 boats turned Sunday and attracted a number of nervous up - ranging from the diminutive Sun 2000 to crews sailing competitively for the first time. There was a general consensus to repeat the the enormous Sun Odyssey 49DS. The RNLI sportingly put in an appearance event next year - which has already been agreed will be based at Neptune Marina. and carried out SeaChecks on the safety of NavNet 3D Tim Reinman, (red sweater) MD of Bob Spalding Marine with EAST members after the handover of our new RIB. Our activities include: n Keelboat sailing from SYH in our five Squibs, two evenings a week from April to September n A training programme towards RYA qualifications n Yacht cruising weekends and a cruising week (mainly for the visually impaired) n Keelboat Racing. YACHT CRUISING EAST’s VI (visually impaired) sailing wing has had a busy year again in ‘08. It started with a successful weekend in May, with a total of 10 yachts sailing with 6 Visually Impaired sailors, including two very welcome new skippers. The weekend started with a social get together in the Harbour Room at SYH. There was a good sailing breeze on Saturday morning, and a number of the boats rafted up in the Stour for lunch. The evening was spent at Ipswich Marina hosted by the Yacht Club there. The summer cruise was again blighted by bad weather, so the original plan of a cruise to Holland did not come about. However, in good EAST style people made the best of it and had a varied cruise including visits to Heybridge Basin, Brightlingsea, Ramsholt, Shotley and the Royal Harwich. Eight boats took part, with seven Visually Impaired sailors, including two who were attending for the first time. The second introductory cruise took place over the weekend 20/21 Sept, with eleven boats and 13 VI’s, including nine newcomers, which was a record. We started with a Cheese and Wine party on Friday evening, followed by supper at the Lightship. The level of interest from Visually Impaired sailors, sighted helpers and skippers continues to be very heartening, although we are, of course, always keen to welcome more newcomers in any of these categories. Carol Bloyce, our current secretary, is retiring for a well earned rest. The success of the VI cruising is primarily due to all the hard work she has put into Keelboat secretary: Colin Williamson 01473 785600 [email protected] Cruising secretary: Weiland Raatz 01473 327556 or 07908 423237 [email protected] organising it over many years. We cannot thank her enough. Our new secretary, Weiland Raatz, will be pleased to receive any enquiries about the yacht cruising. KEELBOAT LEISURE SAILING Another season has drawn to a close with our traditional fish and chip supper. Although the weather was not a huge improvement on 2007, we sailed 77% of the available evenings. Our Taster Day in May introduced several new members who are now sailing regularly with us. Congratulations go to four of our volunteers who passed an RYA Keelboat Instructor’s course, bringing our number of Instructors to 7. During August we took delivery of a new Ribtec 585 support boat (see picture) in readiness for 2009. This boat is very well equipped and will support both our leisure sailing and racing for years to come. The leisure fleet of 5 squibs had been enhanced by the addition of 2 Sonars (originally acquired for the Vision 2012 project). They have provided a new experience for our sailors and more flexibility in crew allocation. We are always looking for more disabled sailors and helpers. If you are interested in sailing with us or know someone who might be interested, please contact the Keelboat Secretary, Colin Williamson. KEELBOAT RACING The Squib racing has got off to a good start, we had 3 Squibs competing in the HPYC Squib fleet and despite the fact that we had no facility to fly spinnakers we have enjoyed the racing so far. The good news is that we now have the go-ahead to equip 3 of our 5 Squibs with spinnakers and fly-away poles (which are easier to handle) so from now on we shall see just how good we are at sailing. If you know someone that is disabled and interested in sailing or racing, pass them our details, they will be made welcome. For more information please contact the Racing Secretary, Terry Morley. T he 2008 Children’s Dinghy Sailing Season was conducted over a 6-week period during the summer school holidays. The four different stages of the RYA training courses were run over five morning or afternoon sessions each week and was deemed a great success, as each week was over subscribed. In addition we ran Seamanship Skills, Spinnaker Skills, Day Sailing and Start Racing for those children wishing to progress further. Two, 2-day childrens’ dinghy sailing courses have been inserted into our programme during the school half term in late October as a result of the additional demand and we still have a few places available. Early morning visitor to the Laser PICO pontoon W e have purchased three new Wayfarers which have proved to be a great success in that they are light, durable, easy to use and have self-draining cockpits. Both students and instructors have enjoyed using them. Next year, more RS Fevas are going to be added to the fleet to give versatility to our training requirements, enabling us to train the more experienced sailors in Dinghy Sailing. The floating pontoon moored in the river was taken full advantage of by our dinghy sailors while receiving the Seal of Approval by an early weekend visitor! (see pic below left). P owerboat Level 2 courses have far exceeded expectations in 2008 with more courses than ever being taken up this year. The 2-day course is full-on – partly based in the classroom but mostly water-based. Students can expect to leave the course with a sound knowledge base on which to build their powerboat skills for the future. We will be adding more boats to the very popular RS FEVA fleet in 2009. The entrance to the chandlery has been altered to be fully wheelchair-friendly as well as encouraging passers-by to take a look inside. The range, which were classically built of solid mahogany on oak frames, included the ‘Twinkle 10,’ Twinkle 12’ and Family Fourteen.
