Mills, RHIT Angela Morey, MSM, RHIA Cynthia Bouchard, MLS, RHIA Susan Perkins, RHIT, CCS, CHC Trannie Murphy, MHIM, RHIA, CCS President’s Address MSHIMA or AHIMA - if anyone besides you or I were to see these letters, would they have any idea as to their meaning? The answer to that question is probably not. Not even the people that need to know the importance of these two associations know their value. Let me tell you, MSHIMA plans to change that in the great state of Mississippi. As I said in my incoming address on August 21st, there are many obstacles facing the health care industry in the future and we as a profession are the solutions to these problems. We have the education, expertise, and diversity to overcome such things as ICD 10, Meaningful Use, Quality Reporting, and Clinical Documentation. My personal goal for MSHIMA is to make contact with every C-Suite in this state. I want them to know they have the solutions already within their facilities or that through MSHIMA we will help put them in touch with the correct HIM solution. Our theme for this entire year is We Can Fix It, Yes We Can! I do not want this to only be a theme for the 2013 Convention, but a battle cry for the entire year. It is so important that we as professionals sell our profession for what we are. We are at the forefront of this ever changing industry and we must claim that place! It is up to us professionally and individually to promote the worth of our education and our credentials. We are also in need of members to volunteer for committees and to run for office. In order to grow and bring new ideas to the table we need new faces to present them. It is such a rewarding experience to serve on the MSHIMA Board of Directors. I hope that all of you will volunteer for that reward. Remember to check the website for updates, meeting minutes and listings of upcoming meetings and contact information. If you ever have any questions or concerns please contact me or any Board member and we will be happy to assist in any way that we can. Thank you for your support and I look forward to serving you as President of MSHIMA for the coming year. Now get out there and let the Mississippi health care industry know: WE CAN FIX IT, YES WE CAN! YOU CAN FIX IT, YES YOU CAN! This quarter our featured Board Member is MSHIMA President, Lorie Mills. LORIE B. MILLS, RHIT WAYNE GENERAL HOSPITAL CLINICAL DOCUMENTATION AND LOST REVENUE How did you become interested in the HIM Field? I have always been interested in the medical profession but I really liked the business world also. In April of my senior year, Greta Chapman, RHIT gave a presentation on HIM in my business class. I knew that this was the career I would love. It offered the best of both worlds. I applied to the HIT program at MCC the following month and began the interview process. Now 20 years later here I am working at the best job I have ever had and enjoying a network of friends and peers all because one person took the time to speak to a class of high school seniors. What are some of your goals for MSHIMA this year? I have several goals for MSHIMA this year, but the three that I really want to focus on are: Promoting HIM professionals to the healthcare industry in Mississippi. Providing Coding and CDI workshops during the year. Increase Student and Member retention for MSHIMA. What is your motto, in either life or work? My motto in life and work is Live, Laugh, Love: Live your life, Laugh often, and Love what you do. MS DIVERSITY COMMITTEE IS LOOKING FOR YOU! With all of the day to day challenges HIM professionals face, we always stay busy. But, we also have a duty that goes beyond the workplace. With so many new professionals entering the growing HIM field, the need for mentors to guide students, new members, and current members as they transition into the field or into a new job role is greater than ever! Keep in mind that ALL HIM professionals make ideal mentors. Share your knowledge and skills with the next generation. In turn they will share fresh new ideas with us and everyone will grow and benefit. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Christy E. Roberts, RHIA at [email protected] or 601-766-6394. P AGE 4 Display Board Design Contest MSHIMA is looking for a new display board design . We are starting a new feature in this quarter’s newsletter that focuses on a HIM related vendor that operates within Mississippi. For this edition, we sat down with Karen Lenow from Infoware, Inc. to ask how her organization can assist HIM professionals in today’s technology based workplace. Her insight into how the field is changing and her support of our efforts as an association are tremendous assets to our membership! 1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your company? I was born and raised in Jackson and currently live in Madison, MS. I attended Central High School, graduated from MS Baptist High School, and attended Hinds Jr. College. I have been married to Ray Lenow for over 19 years, have one step-son and two grandchildren. Ray and I formed Infoware in 1994, and in 1998, began marketing dictation products throughout Mississippi and Louisiana. As technology has evolved and industry standards and requirements have changed, we have incorporated additional complimentary products into our product line in order to bring to market complete solutions to meet our customers’ needs. Our customer base includes medical, legal, insurance, public safety, social services, and general business users and range from the smallest, single practitioner to the multi-state facility, and everything in between. 2. What types of services does your company provide? Infoware provides dictation solutions, transcription software, document management and distribution solutions, and computer assisted coding products. Our specific product offerings include: Fusion Voice, Fusion Text, Fusion Speech including backend and front end recognition using a single database, Fusion EMR allowing users to dictate directly into their EMR, and Fusion CAC, all of which may be integrated with third party systems for seamless workflow. We also offer Dragon Naturally Speaking, Dragon Medical Practice Edition, Nuance PDF and Scanning software, dictation stations, Olympus and Philips handheld and conference recorders as well as iPhone and Blackberry software solutions, microphones, foot pedals and headsets. Infoware offers 24/7 service and support for all products we sell. We offer free site evaluation and workflow analysis, as well as project management, training and consulting services. We are also the only authorized Olympus repair depot throughout Mississippi and Louisiana. 3. What seems to be the #1 point of frustration for healthcare organizations today and how can your company help them overcome it? Although there are many points of frustration, we see that many facilities who have implemented EMRs are struggling with the time it takes for physicians to create required documentation. Physicians are becoming more and more frustrated and the documentation created, although it meets the requirements of “meaningful use”, does not provide the full story of the patient’s condition and treatment. Many EMR vendors are suggesting speech recognition programs for narrative dictation, but adequate training and ongoing profile management is not being provided to allow speech recognition programs to “continue to learn”. Without proper management, the speech recognition software will never produce accurate documentation. Infoware not only provides speech recognition software but provides proper end user and management training to ensure the most productive and accurate results. 4. What are future concerns that you see coming down the pipeline? With ICD-10 implementation just around the corner, coders and supervisors are being trained on the new coding procedures, but I do not see physicians being trained. One of the biggest problems I see is that physicians will not be providing all the necessary components for proper ICD-10 coding, resulting in query after query, delaying billing and ultimately creating a negative effect on cash flow for the facility. As part of our Fusion Voice dictation system, we now offer a module known as DocAssist which actually prompts physicians for specific data when dictating procedure notes. The ICD-10 procedure code can be automatically generated and populated into templates thereby reducing errors. Our Fusion CAC product (computer assisted coding) also generates and manages queries for those reports that have been dictated but do not contain the necessary elements for proper coding. These tools not only help to generate proper documentation, but offer training for physicians so they learn how to dictate with proper specificity More accurate documentation equals faster coding which in turn equals quicker reimbursement, a win-win solution for any facility. 5. How can members contact you if they have further questions? I can be contacted at: Infoware, Inc. P.O.
