H
induism is good enough for us; we
don’t need your Bible!” Hindu villagers exclaimed as the missionaries went from
home to home. How could we break down the
barriers to let the light of the gospel shine in? The
answer was clear:“Nothing will open doors for the
truth like evangelistic medical missionary work.
This will find access to hearts and minds, and
will be a means of converting many to the truth.”
Evangelism, p. 513.
In January 2006 a team of three missionaries, Kae
Borrero, Jai Ramdin, and Melissa Collett, flew to
Mauritius, an island east of Madagascar, to host two
six-part“Diabetes Reversal” seminars.Their tool was the
health message, and their goal was the salvation of souls.
“I thank our Creator God, and I thank you for
teaching us. But I thank God first.” “Thank you for
praying with us before the meeting. We like it when
we know that we are in a spiritual environment. ”
Such were the comments of the Hindu attendees
who came to learn about health, but who also
learned to trust Christians. Many would not leave
before kissing us on both cheeks each night.
“I think God sent you to me. I am going
through a very difficult time right now; I am
getting a divorce,” shared Shirley, a radio talk show
host who invited us to speak about diabetes on
her program. Having lost her father to diabetes
last year, Shirley has become a strong militant
against the disease. One night she asked us,“Why
are there so many different religions in our world
today? I think that people are not studying the
Bible enough; this is why.” How could such a
question arise out of a diabetes seminar? Only
through the Spirit of God.
“These meetings should be advertised across
the whole island! Hundreds should be attending!”
declared a man at our second set of classes, when
about eighty people attended. “It’s very difficult for
us to make these health changes, but we believe that
God can help us. As you taught us, our Creator can
give us the victory over our evil habits. Thank you so
much for sharing this information with us! ”
This is just the beginning. Now faithful
Adventists who helped us during the seminars are
following up on these precious contacts.
Many hearts and doors were opened through
the medical missionary work, the right arm of the
gospel. You, too, can have a story to tell.“We have
come to a time when every member of the church
should take hold of medical missionary work. The
world is a lazar house filled with victims of both
physical and spiritual disease. Everywhere people
are perishing for lack of a knowledge of the truths
that have been committed to us.” A Call to Medical
Evangelism and Health Ministry, p. 10. May God
help us all, first to live the gospel and health truths
committed to us, and then to be instruments in
winning lost souls to Christ.

Hits Ifira

A
hurricane recently swept through Ifira, a
small island in Vanuatu. It uprooted and
destroyed every barrier and suspicion in its path.
It maneuvered itself silently from house to house.
Hearts were subdued; relationships rekindled.
The number of people wanting to know God
increased, and the truth found its way into people’s homes. Ifira was left defenseless! God used a
silent agent to convey the truth.
Before Highwood College** students
arrived on Vanuatu, my father Henden had
photocopied the pages from the Last Generation
magazine and had pinned them on the main
billboard in downtown Port Vila, Vanuatu.
Although the copies were in black and white,
the stories and testimonies of people’s lives that
had been changed by the power of God caught
people’s attention.
Highwood College students went to Ifira on a
mission trip, taking two boxes of Last Generation
magazines. They handed them out during the
meetings that were held in the mornings and
evenings. People were anxious to have their own
copies. “Can I take four copies for my family and
friends?” one would say. “Over here! Over here!”
others would call out. Some of the locals who
were standing outside of the meeting hall would
send their children inside to get copies for them.
I was so thrilled, and at the same time humbled,
to witness such a change taking place among my
own people. You see, I am from Vanuatu, and I
am now studying at Highwood College, learning
to be a missionary to my own islands.
For decades, Seventh-day Adventists have
not been accepted on Ifira. Their materials were
discarded and burned by one of the established
Protestant groups in the area. However, God
used these Last Generation magazines to carry
the truth into people’s homes where it was
impossible for us to go.
As I write this article, Hurricane Last
Generation continues to work silently on the
islands of Vanuatu, and by God’s grace, it is
winning the battle for truth on Ifira.

The young couple had heard
about Hartland, so they came
here to see and experience its
environment for themselves.
Celina prepared juices and
food for the health guests.
She also worked in the
hydrotherapy department and
the office. "I got to see many
aspects, and it was a very
positive experience."
Emiliano helped out in
construction and plant services.
He is currently a self-supporting
pastor at a new church that
was planted in Sherman,
New York. Both Celina and
Emiliano have a desire to help
their church members learn
of God's truths and win souls.

Unthinkable
Choices

I was facing either dialysis
or kidney transplant. "Either
choice is unthinkable for me,"
I told some friends. "I've got
to do something now, before
it's too late!"
T
hen I determined to try a
lifestyle approach to my
health problems and I turned
to the Hartland Lifestyle
Center. I arrived with my five
different medications for gout,
high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.
Diabetes may seem like a
minor thing, but it affects all
the organs of the body. I used
to be a big meat eater, but I
wanted to lower my intake of
fats to help my diabetes. I also
used to be more physically
active, but my osteoarthritis
started to bother my knees
too much. In fact, I have
already postponed knee
replacement surgery three
times. Over time, my poor
diet and my inactivity led to
excess weight, which hasn't
helped matters.
I was a little concerned
about the cost of attending
the Hartland Lifestyle
Center, but my health is
more important than money.
Money can be earned, but
once health is gone, the power
to earn money is also gone.
What a difference eighteen
days at Hartland makes! Now
I am off all my prescriptions.
I'm thirty pounds lighter, and
my cholesterol levels have
improved. I've even received
many treatments on my
knees including fomentations,
paraffin wax treatments, and
pool exercises. I'm walking a
lot and my knees are doing
better. There is still chronic
pain, but with my new
lifestyle, lighter weight, and
exercises, I am praying that
this, too, will go away.
The staff here is very
conscientious and very
helpful. They often share
quotes from the Bible, and
you can just see that they
possess a Christian attitude.
There's no lack of spirituality
here. There is prayer before
everything, from a hydro
treatment to pool exercises.
Trust in the Lord is simply
part of the regimen. The
Hartland staff is committed
to our spiritual as well as
physical health.
At the end of the session,
we were treated to a farewell
luncheon and presented
with certificates and small
gifts. Many students came to
support us, as well.
I know many people that
could also use this kind of
help. They need the lifestyle
changes that are advocated
here. I will certainly tell
them the good news about
Hartland's Lifestyle Center!

Enables New Teacher

A
fter studying at Hartland
for four years, I completed
my internship back in my
motherland, Malaysia. Now I
teach Bible classes at Aenon
Health Farm. My courses
include "Fundamentals of the
Christian Faith," "Daniel,"
"Revelation I and II," and
"Speech and Homiletics." I
love teaching and seeing my
students improve physically,
mentally, and spiritually.
I received provided me with
the opportunity to study and
firmly build my relationship
with Christ. The various
Bible classes and training at
Hartland prepared me for the
real world.
I am also giving Bible studies
to eight people—four nonAdventists. They're especially
excited about the prophecies
in Daniel. Two others have
already decided to be
baptized.
Now that the training wheels
of Hartland are removed,
I have to stand for what I
believe. One thing I observed
in Malaysia is that many
Seventh-day Adventists,
including leaders, restrict the
authority of the writings of
Ellen G. White. Sadly, this is
the condition of our church
today, not only in Malaysia,
but in different parts of the
world.
That is why I thank God for
Hartland Institute. May there
be more institutes like this
in our church. The education
I was convicted that I needed
to address the issue of the
neglect of Mrs. White's
writings in the church. There
was resistance to that idea,
because it was claimed I put
too much emphasis on her
writings, instead of Scripture.
However, I presented the
message based on the Bible
alone, showing how to
recognize a true prophet and
pointing out God's promises
of the gift of prophecy at the
end of time.
It is a privilege to work for
God. He does not forsake or
leave His children. As I see
news from around the world
and the condition of our
church, I am convinced that
the Lord is coming soon. We
have no time to waste. Soon
probation will close and the
great controversy will come to
an end. Let us vindicate God's
character by obeying our Lord
in His promised strength.

Scientist to Speak
on Creation
at Spring Convocation
For the first time, Hartland Institute will feature the distinguished,
internationally acclaimed scientist Dr. Robert Gentry at its annual
spring convocation. Dr. Gentry's research includes compelling evidence
of God's literal six-day creation, research which will help Seventh-day
Adventists share their unique end-time message about the Sabbath.

e need to publicize God's great works
of creation now, including the fourth
commandment. Why should we wait until the end
comes? Great confusion will soon occur and the
overall issue will be the seventh-day Sabbath
or another day of worship." said Dr. Gentry in a
recent interview with Danny Shelton of 3ABN.
Dr. Gentry worked as a visiting scientist at the
Oakridge National Laboratory, one of the most famous
science laboratories in the world. His research has
been published in top national scientific journals and
major national newspapers and magazines. This year
marks a very important year for Dr. Gentry, as well
as for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, when his
research supporting a six-day creation will receive
significant media attention.
Dr. Gentry will share his knowledge with the public
during the weekend of May 5-7, May 7 being the
first national Ten Commandments Day. But that will
be only the beginning. As the "great controversy"
comes to a head, research such as Dr. Gentry's will
be a pivotal point of faith for many, helping people
see that God's seventh-day Sabbath is plainly a
permanent part of Creation week—and not merely
a Jewish institution. If one accepts the creation
account as true, one cannot avoid the companion
truth of the seventh-day Sabbath. Imagine the
impact on Sunday-keeping Christians!

o dialysis treatment! That means so much
to me! I cannot think of anything that
would make me go back to eating meat, not exercising, not getting enough sun, and not trusting in
God.
I am a diabetic with hypertension, and my
kidneys were failing. My nephrologist (kidney
doctor) had told me that I needed to go on
dialysis, but as a result of my stay here at Hartland
Lifestyle Center and the lifestyle changes I’ve
made, my kidneys are performing better than
when I came.
It has been wonderful here! In the beginning it
was a bit rough, because I went from eating meat
to fasting and then to a totally vegan diet. When
my weakened immune system couldn’t fight off
a cold, the staff supported me throughout my
coughing and low energy.
Through the spiritual counseling I received,
I now have more of a purpose for my life.
New understandings have opened up for me.
My purpose is to glorify God. Before coming
to Hartland, I was headed down the road to
destruction. I was not following God’s health laws;
I was eating whenever and whatever I wanted
and getting no exercise. God loved me enough to
bring me to this point to save me physically and
spiritually.
The whole time I have been at Hartland
Lifestyle Center, I have been thinking about all the
people who need to hear about this place. I want
to tell them about this program and what God
has done for me.

“E
l Salvador has lots of gangs, and many
young people do not know God," says José
Del Rosario. "They need Christ in their lives,
and they need people who can guide them to
know the Lord." So at the invitation of his home
church in El Salvador, José, who prepares food
for Hartland Lifestyle Center's guests, organized
an evangelism trip to El Narangho, a city with
no Seventh-day Adventist presence. Three area
churches prepared the city for the well-attended
two-week series.
With him went Fredy Castro, a health
ministries major, who taught hydrotherapy,
massage, poultices and other remedies to about
fifty young members of the host churches in
the mornings. During the evening meetings he
lectured on the eight laws of health. "We saw and
heard their appreciation, but the week that I spent
there is nothing compared with all the work that
needs to be done," said Fredy.
Liesel Dettwiler, a Bible instructor major,
provided special music on her viola, but when
Fredy returned to Hartland for classes, Liesel
also presented the health lectures. "Foreign
missionaries are needed. We need to take the light
we have to places where people don't have the
same opportunities we do," says Liesel.

Present Truth each evening. For example, the
meetings were held in a park, which had no
electricity for sound or light systems. That need
was supplied by a non-Adventist!
Where the light did not reach, the powerful
sound did. Some Catholic residents hid in the
park's darkness while they listened. Their priest
had gone house to house, warning his church
members not to attend. One woman told José,
"The priest said, 'Don't go,' but I went. I listened,
and not only that, I applied it to my life, and then
I taught somebody else about health."
Even a non-SDA taxi driver, hired to transport
the team three hours each day, heard enough to
accept his first Bible study.
The biggest need was a place for people to
meet after the evangelism crusade ended. Where
could they gather to continue their studies of
God's Word? The city had no Adventists to offer
homes or buildings. Again God used a nonSeventh-day Adventist in His harvest plans: "No
problem. My house is going to be the church.
You can do whatever you want in this house,"
this man said. "Move that wall there and make
a bigger church if you want." Who else but God
could arrange all this?

C
harles H. Spurgeon, the famous Baptist
preacher, became concerned about the liberal direction of the Baptist churches. When he
preached against their apostasy, he was accused of
creating schism, and many tried to discredit him.
However, knowing his duty in light of Scripture,
he continued to fulfill it faithfully.
The Baptist Union worked hard to criticize,
slander and condemn Spurgeon.“His name was
lampooned in the press and kicked about the street
as a football.” His books were also condemned.
At one point, the only place in England that
would sell his books was a grocery store in
Cambridge. All the painful betrayal and
criticism took its toll on his physical
and mental health.
Today, however, Spurgeon
is remembered as one of the
greatest Christian preachers and
writers of all time. His sermons
and writings are well known
and appreciated—his critics
unknown and unremembered.
His works are contained in more
than seventeen volumes the size of
the Encyclopedia Britannica. Over 100
million copies of his sermons were sold. His
works were translated into twenty-three languages
and continue to be an inspiration to many.
Many a messenger whom God sends to preach
the truth and warn His people is despised and
rejected by the religious authorities. This is because the
reformers call them to account for their spiritual laxity
and apostasy. In the eyes of many, their great sin is that
they are“criticizing the church and its leaders.”
Despite these false accusations, it is this very
work that God requires to have done. But when
reproof is given, controversy springs up, and the
reformer is misrepresented as divisive and a trouble
maker—a “troubler of the people.” Consistently,
though, the reformers are remembered for their
work, while their opponents are forgotten. The
lives of Isaiah, Jeremiah, John the Baptist, Wycliffe,
Luther, Wesley, Calvin, and a host of others
continue to be a testimony of God's faithfulness
and power. Today, though, a puzzling situation
exists among those who have benefited from their
legacies. While we recognize that we have among
us those doing the same unpopular but needful
work in our day, why do we so often join the
multitude in criticizing them? Why
are encouraging, supportive voices
so silent?
God used Charles Spurgeon
to oppose the prevailing
apostasy and awaken many
to their condition, who thus
reformed their lives. Perhaps
the life of Spurgeon is a lesson
for us. These times call for
similar action. Once again, the
prevailing apostasy needs to be
addressed with biblical clarity. Naturally,
opposition, slander, and criticism of the
messengers will arise in conjunction with the clarion
calls. However, God’s messengers must press on in
Christian charity and in firmness, appealing to laity
and leadership to return to the word of God. We
live in the last moments of earth’s history. Shouldn’t
we recognize that the same kind of testimony is
needed today? Friends, let us be faithful in giving
and living the message for these last days.

Only God knows the future; He knows how
soon the crisis. He knows our need of deeper,
absolute dependence upon Him, and He will use
some of us to accomplish that purpose in the rest
of us. Right now, we who live on have the honor
of showing "extreme trust" in our God—trusting
to the very depths of our souls. Soon, that great
"gettin' up morning" will reveal to the universe the
total falsity of Satan's accusations about God's
righteousness.

Lai En and his family
moved to Malaysia when
he was fourteen. While in
Malaysia, he furthered his
education at Aenon Health
Farm, a medical missionary
training school. There, he
met David Fam, a graduate
of Hartland College and the
president of Aenon. David
recognized Lai En’s sincerity
and told him of his alma
mater. With David’s encouragement,
Lai En decided to transfer
to Hartland College to learn
more about the Bible. He does
not regret his decision. “God
led me here for a purpose.
Hartland has taught me many
good habits that have helped
form my character. This school
is valuable to me because it
has provided a quality spiritual
environment and Bible classes
that I have not found in
anywhere else in the world.”
As is so often

En says, “My

enjoy reading the different articles in the
Hartland Ministry Report, especially what you
all are doing in the various mission fields.
I
like to read how Jesus is helping people
change for good. I am also impressed by the
humility of the students. They realize without
Jesus, they cannot grow, that He is everything,
and without the love of Christ, they are
nothing. We must die to self, and allow our
Saviour to live in us fully. Then and only then
are we safe. How wonderful that these students
are learning the truth. Praise the Lord!

A Mother's Prayer
Answered
I
t is my prayer that every parent who
reads this will do all in their God-given
power to lead their children to Christ and
into the service of God and man. When
my twin brother Russell and I were young,
our mother urged us to train as pastors.
However, we felt we were "not good enough"
to be gospel ministers.
After our academy years at the Newcastle
Seventh-day Adventist High School, we began
the two-year Theological Course at
Avondale College. We were trained
to teach in our Seventh-day
Adventist schools, which we
did for three years. Then we
enrolled at the University of
Sydney. Following graduation,
Russell studied medicine, while I
completed my master's and doctorate
in psychology and learning theory.
Acting on a promise I had made to the Lord, I
returned to denominational work, accepting a call to
head the education department at Avondale College.
After five years of service there, I accepted a call to be
academic dean of West Indies College in Jamaica.
Within a short time I was appointed president.
During this period of service, the Lord gave me
opportunity to work with the students in the area of
evangelism, and I had the privilege of witnessing the
conversion of a sizeable number of souls to Christ.
I was overwhelmed when the West Indies Union
Committee called me for an interview to explore the
possibility of ordination. I was thirty-seven years old.
This required a solemn time of self-evaluation. I knew
that to reject a call from God would have eternal
consequences.Therefore, I made the decision to accept
the committee's invitation, and I found comfort in
the knowledge that I had not politicked for it. I had to
believe that this was the call of God upon my life. On
April 17, 1971, Elder Archbold, President of the InterAmerican Division, and Dr. Charles Hirsch,
Educational Director of the General
Conference, led out in the ordination.
Thirty-five years have passed
since that day. I feel humbled to
be called to be one of Christ's
representatives in this world of
darkness, humbled to be given the
commission to help men and women
find the eternal kingdom.
My mother was thrilled that her dream had
been fulfilled in my life. Sadly, she did not live to
experience the joy of knowing that Russell would
also be ordained. Maybe what has taken place in our
lives will be an encouragement to other mothers and
fathers who have a desire for their children to be true,
faithful witnesses to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
