Hartland Teacher of the Year
Janet Sifferman, Superintendent
In addition to congratulating Hartland’s 2011 graduating
class, I would like to thank the entire Hartland community
for their continued support of our school district during these
trying financial times. The successful passage of the 18-mill
Non-Homestead Millage will help us to continue to provide
the programming and services for our students that the
community has come to expect. It would be impossible for
Hartland Schools to do what we do without your continued
support. This is a wonderful place to live and work! Thank you.
I would also like to congratulate Cyndi Kenrick on her successful bid for a seat
on the Hartland Consolidated Schools Board of Education. Cyndi will fill the seat
vacated by Elsie McPherson-Brown as of June 30. This is bittersweet as Elsie has
given the Board eight years of dedicated and thoughtful service in addition to her
many years volunteering in our buildings and serving on committees. Elsie has
always put Hartland’s children first and has been a staunch advocate for them
with our state representatives and legislature. We will miss her!
Dear Hartland Graduating Seniors:
Your career with Hartland Consolidated Schools is rapidly drawing to a close,
and waiting for you at the end of this road is the rest of your life. While it seems
inconceivable that you could possibly have better times and better friends than
you have now, I promise you the best is yet to come!
There will be numerous parties and celebrations awaiting you in the coming
weeks and you certainly deserve each and every one of them. However, please
remember, this is a very short period at the beginning of a very long and bright
future. Do not do anything that will
jeopardize your life or your future happiness. You certainly can have a great
time and enjoy yourself without the
aid of alcohol or drugs. The rules you
learned here - Reason, Respect and Responsibility - should remain with you as
you go through life. Please remember to
think before you act. This time should be
remembered for the joy and excitement
of achievement, not as a time of tragedy.
Congratulations to you and your
families
Respectfully,

Congratulations to Matt Conway, Hartland Consolidated Schools’ 2011 Teacher of
the Year. Matt has been teaching physical education and health classes at Round
Elementary School for 15 years. He attended high school in Tiffin, Ohio. Matt
received his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University
and completed Master’s degree classes at Madonna.
Matt and his wife Jennifer, a kindergarten teacher at Village Elementary
School, live in Novi with their two children, son Griffin and daughter Reaghan.
Matt enjoys time with his children, playing recreational sports and watching any
and all Ohio State sport teams!
Matt is well deserving of this honor. He loves doing the extra things that help
students learn or gain a different perspective on learning. Matt has organized
care package drives for military troops and developed a 5K running club so students can set a goal, train, and complete a new challenge. The 5 K club allows
students to reach some sort of adversity, overcome it and accomplish a new goal. For many years Matt has organized the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser for the
American Heart Association in which students at Round Elementary participate.
During the past two years, Matt has enjoyed being a part of the literacy blocks at
Round Elementary School where he has had a chance to work with students in a
completely different environment.
Matt’s favorite teaching moment was on October 12, 2007, the day Round
Elementary School participated in a tribute to the troops with their “Me, You and
the Red White and Blue” ceremony and care package drive. It was a truly uplifting
experience.
Matt’s daily motto is “How do you want to be remembered?” The best part of
his job is watching a student grow in front of his eyes from Kindergarten -fourth
grade and developing a connection with them along the way. He loves the fact
that he gets to come in contact with EVERY Round Elementary student, every
year! Hartland Consolidated Schools and the Hartland Education Association
are proud to honor Matt as the 2011 Hartland Teacher of the Year.

Homecoming Queen Wins Title of Michigan’s Homecoming Queen
Raime Lamb, a senior at Hartland High school, was
voted by her classmates as homecoming queen last
October. The America’s Homecoming Queen Inc. is
an organization that invites queens from all over the
nation to compete for their state title. Once a girl has
been chosen to represent each state, they move on to
the national competition to compete for the title of
America’s Homecoming Queen. Winners at the state
and national level are also awarded with scholarships.
After writing an essay, a series of interviews by the
judges and an evening gown competition on April 9
and 10, Raime was chosen as one of the top 10 finalists. The finalists were then each asked a question which
they answered in front of the judges and the audience. Miss Lamb’s efforts earned her the spot of Michigan’s
Homecoming Queen.
Raime was also voted Michigan’s Favorite Homecoming Queen from online voting. July 22-27 Raime
will be going to the National competition at Disney Land in Anaheim, California
to represent both the state of Michigan and Hartland High School. Raime is a student that has worked very hard through her four years at
Hartland High and will be attending Michigan State University in the fall.
The online voting does not stop here! Raime will also be competing for the
title of America’s Favorite Homecoming queen. Help Raime win this title by visiting
www.americanshomecomingqueen.com/national-queens/michigan-hartlandhigh-school/raime/ and voting for her. Each vote is $1.00 and donations go
toward the scholarship fund. Parents

Seniors Parents – Don’t miss this experience! The Senior All Night Party is completely
planned and run by the seniors’ parents, so all levels of involvement are welcomed
and needed. The SANP is as fun and rewarding for parents who participate as it
is for the kids who attend it the night of graduation. Whatever your skills and/or
interests may be, there is something you can do to help. If you haven’t signed up
yet to help with the party, please contact us at [email protected] and let
us know how you can help. We need help with set up all day on June 9, all night
long during the party and with tear down and clean up at 4 am on June 10.
Visit our website at: http://minnie.hartlandschools.us/groups/seniorallnightparty2011/. Graduation is almost here! We need you! Please email us at [email protected].

“Parents Who Host Lose the Most.
Don’t be a party to teenage drinking.
It’s against the law.”
Parents play a major role in their children’s choices about alcohol, tobacco, and
other drugs. According to a 2008 nationwide report, the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), found that 40% of youth ages 12-20 who
used alcohol in the past 30 days reported receiving free alcohol from an adult.
The Drug-Free Action Alliance of Ohio developed the “Parents Who Host Lose the
Most. Don’t be a party to teenage drinking” public awareness campaign to provide
parents and other concerned adults with accurate information about the health risks
of underage drinking and the legal consequences of providing alcohol to youth. The
campaign encourages parents and the community to send a unified message at prom
and graduation time that teen alcohol consumption is not acceptable. It is illegal,
unsafe, and unhealthy for anyone under 21 to drink alcohol.
Underage use of alcohol is a serious problem that too often leads to harmful
consequences for youth and their families. Parents and other adults can protect
themselves and their teens by following these guidelines when hosting parties for
their children:
• Host safe, alcohol-free activities and events for youth during spring break, prom,
and graduation.
• Refuse to supply alcohol to children or allow drinking in your home or on your
property.
• Be at home when your teenager has a party.
• Make sure your teenager’s friends do not bring alcohol into your home.
• Talk to other parents about not providing alcohol at youth events.
• Report underage drinking. TIP Line: 517.546.8477

Journalism Students Win Awards
Several members of the newspaper staff attended the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association’s journalism awards in Lansing, MI. Please join us in celebrating our first ever
Spartan award for the 2010-2011 Eagle newspaper. This is the highest level that a newspaper can achieve based on a thorough newspaper evaluation by an out of state judge. They
evaluate many categories such as coverage, design, photos/graphics, editorial content,
and writing/editing. There were also several state individual awards that were given to our newspaper staff
members. There were 73 schools and 2,963 total entries in this year’s state newspaper competition. Schools were broken up into four categories. We competed against the largest
schools in the state for the following Division 1 awards:

Congratulations to Alyssa Caswell
Alyssa’s Caswell’s one-act play, Another Darn Birthday, was chosen as one
of the six finalists for Michigan State University’s Playwriting Contest.
Her show is being performed by MSU Theatre Students on the Pasant
Stage at Wharton Center on MSU’s campus. She won a cash prize and
was part of the production process, including a post-critique with theatre
professionals. It is worth noting that her script was one of 156 submissions state-wide and that all of the other semi-finalists were 17 and 18
years of age; Alyssa is only 15. What an accomplishment!

Link Crew welcomes the Class of 2015
On Tuesday, August 30 from 7:45am until 12:30pm Hartland High School will welcome the
class of 2015 with a mandatory orientation program called Link Crew. This orientation is
designed for students only. Parents will have an opportunity to join their student at the
conclusion of the Link Orientation.
The Link Crew program “links” junior and senior students with a “crew” of freshmen.
For two days prior to the orientation, these junior and senior Link Leaders, from diverse
social backgrounds, will be trained to lead small groups, to be role models to others, and
to guide the activities for the orientation day. At the heart of the Link Crew program is the
belief that these older students are capable of great leadership to the freshmen, as well as
other students on campus.
The purpose of the Link Crew orientation day is to give the freshmen a positive experience on the HHS campus. The day will begin with an exciting welcome. After a few
warm-up activities, the students will participate in some get-to-know-you activities with
their classmates and Link Leaders. Then students will be introduced to their assigned Link
Leaders. Each crew will participate in small group activities designed to help the students
learn about each other, their school, and their Link Leaders. The small group time will
conclude with a brief general tour of the school, pointing out key locations such as the
main office, cafeteria and main academic hallways.
Students must attend this orientation to receive a copy of their class schedule prior
to the first day of school. The school tour provided during the orientation will not allow
the students to walk their individual schedules. Therefore, parents are invited to join their
ninth grade student following the conclusion of the orientation program to walk through
their class schedule in order to feel more comfortable with class locations prior to the first
day of school. Doing this is highly recommended.
A new addition this year will be a parent orientation in the HHS auditorium on the
morning of the freshmen orientation hosted by HHS administration from 8AM to 9AM.
This parent orientation is intended to provide useful information and tips to make your
incoming freshmen successful.
Stay tuned because Link Crew continues throughout the entire year with social and
academic follow-ups between the Link Leaders and their crews.
**NOTE** Ninth grade registration will be held on August 23 This is a separate event from
orientation, but it is mandatory that students and parents attend. At registration parents
and students can expect to turn in emergency cards, get school pictures taken, pay for
school pictures, athletic passes, etc…

Hartland Middle School Student
Named State Champion in Forensics!
The Ore Creek Middle School forensics team
finished the season with an outstanding finish at the MIFA Middle Level State Tournament held at Wayne State University on April
30. Eighth grade student Kendra Rocha won
the State Championship in Extemporaneous
Speaking! Extemp is considered by many to
be the most difficult of all the public speaking
categories because the student draws a current event topic of national or international
importance and has 30 minutes to prepare a
four to seven minute speech on that topic. The
speaker must include her own analysis of the
subject and also present evidence to support
her position. Kendra will go on to compete in
the National Junior Forensic League Tournament held in June in Dallas, Texas.
Bree, Sarah & Kendra
Sarah Portelli and Bree Rice, both 8th grade
students at Ore Creek, represented Hartland in the interpretive categories of Poetry and Prose. These categories are very large and the competition was intense
as students from 26 other middle schools from across the state vied for a top six
placing.
Earlier in April, the forensics team traveled to North Branch for another
Middle School tournament. The team rallied to a 2nd place finish, which was
amazing considering this, is only the first year of competition for these students.

Lakes enjoyed a visit in April from our Hartland Schools liaison officer, Deputy Jim
Steinaway, who spent time reading to several classrooms and talking with students about
his duties as a police officer in the schools. Pictured here, Deputy Steinaway reads “The

he Round Elementary School Family would like to thank all people who made
this school year a great one. We feel fortunate to have caring people who help
us create a positive learning environment for our children. We wish everyone a
safe, restful, fun-filled summer and look forward to another exciting school year.
The following pictures feature our Science/Art Fair and Ice Cream Social. It was a
big turnout to look at our student’s fantastic science and art displays and share ice
cream scooped by our staff. There were also books published by all our students
on display for family to read. It was an awesome night! Round would also like to
recognize our very own Matt Conway, Hartland Schools Teacher of the Year. Also,
Barb Benford in recognition of National Librarian Appreciation Day. We have an
incredible staff at Round Elementary School and we wish you a great summer.
Congratulations to Round School’s Matt Conway for receiving Hartland

LEGACY Community Service
During the summer Michigan Works Program, Randy Pomeroy and LEGACY students
built several benches and a picnic table to enhance the Community Education Building
for the many people including senior citizens, preschool students, LEGACY students,
college students and community members who enjoy use of the building. Recently
Art Teacher, Mrs. Ernst, invited the preschool children to decorate a bench that will
be sitting in their entry way with painted pastel hand prints. LEGACY students helped
the children paint their hands and distribute the prints over the bench.
This was a good time for LEGACY students to interact with the youngsters and the
preschoolers and to work with a big brother or sister again for the hour. In December,
they created holiday gingerbread houses together. During this summer Randy and the
students look forward to creating more tables and benches for the district.

Walk in Her Shoes
Saturday April 16, at the Tanger Outlet
Mall in Howell, a number of Hartland
LEGACY students participated in the 6th
annual “Walk-a-mile” to support LACASA.
The walk is an International men’s march
to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender
violence.
Walkers come as individuals or
teams. They walk with families, spouses,
co-workers, and friends. Some dress in
uniform, team shirts, even dresses, but
all wearing women’s shoes. Some walkers have participated annually and bring
their own shoes, from high heeled patent
leather boots, to fuzzy leopard print high
heels, and some prefer the flat sandals
making the walk a bit more safe.
The students collected money and
participated to help raise awareness of
sexual violence, and help the survivors
that turn to LACASA for help. Families and
family pets came out for support and to
cheer these walkers on.

The bluebirds are back! What better time for Joyce Schuelke of the Wildernest
in Brighton to share her presentation about the care and feeding of these lovely
creatures, including how to attract them to our backyards. We will begin our June
7 meeting with a potluck dinner at 6:30pm and the presentation will follow at approximately 7:15pm. The Hartland Audubon Nature Club meets the first Tuesday
of the month, from September through June, at the Hartland Education Support
Service Center on M 59 just west of US 23. For more information, please contact

Meetings resume on September 8
Bill Fountain, Joe Petrucci and Karen Crouse, President of the Rotary Club
The Rotary Club of Hartland
The Rotary Club of Hartland is moving forward into summer and our first
annual fund raising event, The Hartland Cardboard Regatta to be held June 25 at
Waldenwoods Resort. Teams from local businesses and community groups are
busy constructing their cardboard boats for friendly competition in racing and
stay afloat contests on Lake Walden. There will be food, crafts, and activities for
children at this fun event where proceeds will be used to fund local and international
causes as part of Rotary’s mission in helping those in need. For more information,
see our ad in this issue and our web site below.
At Hartland Rotary’s April 21 meeting, Bill Fountain and Joe Petrucci were
honored for their extensive efforts to relieve suffering and need within Hartland
and Livingston County. Bill and Joe have served Hartland for many years, both on
the Township’s Planning Commission and on its Board. Bill is currently Supervisor,
and Joe is a trustee. Bill Fountain was honored for the many fundraising activities
conducted through The Majestic golf course. He has raised over $80,000 for
Hartland families in need, The Majestic has hosted the Birdie Drop, spearheaded
by Joe Petrucci; this event raised over $300,000 for Gleaners and has obtained
donations of over 2,000 turkeys to help families in need.
On May 13-15, six local Hartland students participated in the Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards, spending the weekend at the University of Guelph in Ridgetown,
Ontario. Three of the students were sponsored by our local club. Our second annual
garage sale was held May 26-May 29 in front of Tyme Well Spent in the village of
Hartland. Thanks to club member Nancy Martin for hosting and coordinating
this activity.
Visitors are welcome to join us on Thursday mornings for breakfast and
informative presentations at Village Manor (9501 E. Highland Rd.) at 7:15am If
you have a passion for community service and enjoy sharing the fellowship of
those with a similar desire, please consider joining us. You can also go to www.
hartlandrotary.org for more information on our club.
The Hartland Area Macintosh User Group (HAMUG) will
meet Tuesday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. The June meeting is
being held at The Spirit of Livingston, 3280 W. Grand
River in Howell. It is our annual pot luck and swap meet. Danny from the Spirit
of Livingston will be demonstrating his new “ALL OVER
DESIGN” shirt sublimation process. Anyone interested in
learning more about the Macintosh computer is welcome
to attend, regardless of your level of computer knowledge.

Spring has arrived with summer on the way! Some members are sheering sheep, goats
and alpacas or welcoming new fuzzy babies to their fold. Some are dyeing silk, wool
and other fibers into many beautiful colors of the rainbow while still others are busy
creating wonderful fiber art both to wear and sell at Michigan’s many festivals and
art fairs.
The Black Sheep Weavers’ traditionally meet from September through May, closing our year with elections for the next years board at our members potluck in June.
We look forward to another year of creating art, sharing projects and ideas, attending
meetings where we will enjoy speakers in the many facets of fiber art and attending
educational and interesting workshops.
Plan to join us next Fall when we once again meet at the Hartland Consolidated
Schools Educational Support Service Center at 9525 Highland Rd (M-59) ¾ mile West
of US 23, Hartland. We always welcome visitors who are interested in any of the fiber
arts! For additional information on the Black Sheep Weavers’ Fiber Guild including
photographs of our activities and artwork, please visit our web site at www.blacksheepweavers.com.

2011 Warm n Cozy
Bazaar
December 3
The 2010 Warm N’ Cozy Bazaar was a great success. Over 2,000 people (not including our friends 12 and under) attended the Bazaar. We were thrilled with the
attendance given the economic climate. Candy Cane Lane was a hit. We want to
thank all of our wonderful volunteers. Special thanks to Michelle Otis from Community Ed. Also, thanks Carol & Danny Maczik from Spirit of Livingston, to Sandy
and Mark Enderle for helping in the set up and tear down, to Denise Schneirs
and Maryann Zurmuehlen who served as Bazaar Chairs and to our phenomenal
student volunteers from Hartland High School. We really couldn’t put the Bazaar
on without them.
We are already going full steam ahead for the 2011 Bazaar held on Saturday,
December 3(always the first Saturday in December). Proceeds from the bazaar
are donated to local school affiliated programs and local charities. Last year, we
donated over $10,000 to worthy groups such as Hartland School PTOs; Hartland
Senior Center; Hartland Music Hall; Gleaners; LACASA; Hartland Optimists Club;
Meals on Wheels; Cromaine Library; Red Cross of Liv. County and Hospice of Liv.
County. We are proud to present scholarships to worthy Hartland High School
senior students.
The Hartland Women’s Club is a non-profit organization and is ALWAYS looking for new members. In addition to the Bazaar, we participate in the Hartland
Heritage Day. We have monthly movie nights, monthly dinners at different area
restaurants and some members even make an annual pilgrimage to Shipshewana!
We meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month at HESSC on M-59 at 7:00pm.
Feel free to stop by, say hello and perhaps join our Club. If you have any questions,
please contact Peggy Seebaldt 810.632.4959.

Swing Dance Club Started
A new swing dance club started at Ore Creek Middle school on March 22. The dance
club meets weekly at 2:30pm in the Kiva at Ore Creek. Participants pay $5 monthly for

Summer Membership at the Hartland Pool?
Unless you live on a lake, or next door to someone who generously shares their
backyard pool, finding someplace to burn off some of the kids energy in the
summer can be a challenge.
Let’s do the math. If a family of four comes to the pool once a week for 13
weeks, the walk-in cost ($5 each) would be $260. A family membership costs
$170, and you can come as often as you’d like.
Open Swims are 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday, at 2:30-4:00pm
and 7:30-9:00pm. Where else can you go where it’s always sunny, warm, safe and
clean?
Families with young children often bring the kids’ pajamas, and take them
home freshly showered and worn-out-ready-for-bed.
Membership includes the use of all facilities, during regularly scheduled hours,
except for classes with an instructor. More information can be found at www.
hartlandschools.us, then follow the link to the aquatic center or call 810.626.2279.

VA Long Term Care Benefits, Part 2
Last month we began our discussion
of VA “Pension.” This month we will
continue our discussion
Pension is an underused benefit
There are different income
categories for Pension, but the
highest could pay as much as
$1,949.00 a month in disability
income to a qualifying veteran
household. A study commissioned
by VA in 2001 estimated, over the
next 14 years, only about 30% of
eligible veterans would apply for
Pension. This is likely due to the
fact that most veterans simply
don’t know about it. In fact about
a third of all seniors in this country,
age 65 and older, could become
eligible for pension under the right
circumstances. That’s how many
elderly war veterans or their surviving
spouses there are.
To receive Pension, a veteran must
have served on active duty, at least 90
days, with at least one of those days
during a period of war. There must be a
discharge under conditions other than
dishonorable. Single surviving spouses
of such veterans are also eligible. If
younger than 65, the veteran must be
totally disabled. If age 65 and older,
there is no requirement for disability.
There is no age or disability requirement
for a single surviving spouse. There
are income requirements, but a
special provision does allow household
income to be reduced by 12 months
worth of future medical expenses.
Normally, income is only reduced
by medical expenses incurred in the
month of application. These allowable,
annualized medical expenses are
such things as insurance premiums,
ongoing prescription drug costs, outof-pocket cost of monthly medical
equipment rental, the cost of home
care, the cost of paying adult children
to provide care, the cost of adult day
services, the cost of assisted living and
the cost of a nursing home facility.
These are all considered medical
costs and they can be deducted from
income to receive this benefit. The
secret for receiving a successful award
for aid and attendance or housebound
ratings
is not in filling out the form
but in knowing what documents and
evidence must be submitted with the
application. Knowing the secrets for
a successful award—with the special
case of long term care recipients—is
95% of the battle. Even though the
form is challenging, filling out and
filing a claim is a formality.
A knowledgeable consultant can
provide information to shorten VA’s
decision window of 6 to 12 months to
possibly 3 or 4 months. The consultant
also understands how to maximize
the benefit or avoid a denial. The
consultant can also provide guidance
for meeting the asset test. Finally,
the consultant can provide the actual
strategies for reallocating assets and
he or she can arrange for trusts or
income conversions to allow for the
best possible accommodation of
assets for beneficiaries thus reducing
taxes, family disputes and Medicaid
penalties.

Grazia Curcuru Earns Bronze Award
Lakes Cub Scout Pack 385
As you can see, we had a GREAT turnout for our Cross-Over celebration in April.
Leaders and parents are so proud of how well the Scouts did. The Scouts are so
excited for their next adventure – their next rank, which starts in the fall. Last
month some families got together at Splash Village for Mom and Me Day. Also, we
participated in the Memorial Day Parade and gave out lots of treats! This month,
we had our end of the year picnic, Toledo Mud Hens’ baseball game/sleepover,
Kids Day 2011, and Extreme Scouting Day Camp at the Livingston Conservation
& Sports Association. In July, we are looking forward to attending the Resident
Camp at Camp Munhacke. We know Scouts had a great year and we would like to
thank those who volunteered their time and effort to make Pack 385 an awesome
experience for Scouts. Join us in the fall when we kick off another great year!
On Monday May 2, Junior
Girl Scout Grazia Curcuru,
of Troop 41231 out of Charyl
Stockwell Academy, hosted
a workshop to benefit U-M
Mott’s Children’s Hospital to
earn her Bronze Award. The
Girl Scouts attending were
asked to bring books for the
Book Cart at Mott’s Children’s
Hospital, and while at the
workshop, they made footprint cards for the babies in
the NICU. Donations from
Hartland Kroger and Susan’s
Hallmark provided a snack
and prizes for the girls who
came out to participate in the
benefit workshop. Barnes &
Noble at Green Oak donated
books for the Book Cart.
Many thanks for the generous donations and to the girls
who came out to support a
good cause.
