6, 2015 – California’s largest multi-sport festival, the
California State Games, has
announced that space is still
available for interested bowlers to sign up and compete.
The bowling competition will
be held in San Diego on Saturday, July 18th at Mira Mesa
Lanes. Bowling is one of
twenty-four sports where over
10,000 amateur athletes, both
adults and youth, can experience the Olympic Dream and
compete to bring home the
Gold Medal.
For Bowlers, the California State Games will kickoff on Friday July 17th at the
Opening Ceremonies held at
Qualcomm Stadium in front
of 20,000 spectators. Bowlers
will mingle with athletes from
other sports in the Athlete’s
Village prior to the ceremonies,
then take part in the Parade of
Athletes and enter Qualcomm
Stadium to the roar of the
crowd and Olympic music.
After Olympian Guest-speakers and live-entertainment acts
the night will commence with
the ceremonial Lighting of the
Torch and a spectacular fireworks display.
Bowling competition will
be played on Saturday July
18th at Mira Mesa Lanes. California Bowlers will compete
for Gold, Silver and Bronze
Medals, while Teams will also
compete for the coveted Championship Banner to bring back
to their local bowling center.

SAN BERNARDINO — I
am nearly sixty years older
than Zack King but that fact
doesn’t keep us from competing against each other. We both
look forward to our weekend
bowling matches. Only the
sport of bowling allows a senior to be able to compete successfully against a youngster.
It is the only sport that allows
athletes of all ages to compete
evenly against each other.
Well, Zack’s day has finally come. For the first time
he beat me and did so convincingly. He averaged 201 for
six games and won two consecutive matches. With sets
of 608 (215-182-211) and 600
(177-210-211) he beat me 3-0
and 2-1. What’s an old guy to
do? But I will be back.
Zack is just thirteen and
has been bowling only since
September. Nonetheless, with
coaching from LEE FITZGERALD, TERRY HODGSON
and BOBBY LYONS and a
new IQ ball from JOHNNY
VALENTINE, his game has
taken off. His league average
is up twenty pins.
Zack
averaged
seven
strikes a game against me but
had seven single pin misses.
Those open frames kept him
from averaging 215! YOUNG

Forkel’s $100 fine stemming
from an altercation with Professional Bowlers Association
Hall-of-Famer Pete Weber has
been waived.
Forkel, a five-time PBA
Tour champion and perhaps
the top bowler to come out of
the San Fernando Valley, had
appealed the PBA fine.
Forkel and Weber, who
also was fined $100, got into
a brief heated exchange about
a month ago during the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open
in Las Vegas. Weber believed
that Forkel got into his “line of
vision” when Weber was preparing to bowl, according to
insiders at the event.
Weber, known for his fiery
personality, shouted at Forkel
after he believed that Forkel
distracted him when the latter grabbed his bowling ball.
Forkel fired back and the incident was caught on bowling
channel Xtra Frame.

Idea Share Workshop with USBC’s Mike Larsen & CUSBC President Rosie Parker
Concerns and questions shared by State Delegates attending this workshop included:
1. USBC Women’s Nationals. USBC awards for this event are cut down and now women must bowl a 240 game or better for a pin award.
2. Building Youth program idea. The Monterey USBC is trying to run their youth bowling like youth baseball where the participants pay a fee at the start
of the season for a season packet. Then the participating center will issue these youth bowlers a VIP status which gives them extras like free practice
games throughout the week. An 8-10 week session would cost $100-$150 for the package. Include coaching programs.
3. Youth & Adult Coaching. Put on a coaching clinic for your association. Cost would be $20 per person with a limit of 50 people in this clinic for maximum.
Also on bowl.com, USA Bowling Clinics run from July through October with coaching conference.
4. Bowling Book Averages. I posed the question that how can USBC accept a book average if it is from one date in one association and a totally different
date from another? USBC understands that the date submissions are not the same throughout the US. Some still do April 15th; others are going with May
31st or the end of winter season. Others voiced similar concerns as I have that this needs to be standardized in some way.
5. USBC Rule Books. Several delegates were upset that the number of Rule Books that will be distributed to the associations has been cut down so much.
Mike said this was a way that USBC felt they could cut down some of their spending and questioned who uses these books as USBC felt it was a waste to
send out that many. They will now be sending out only 5 books per center and 3 books for associations. For everyone else, you have the option of looking at the Rule Book online or downloading the mobile app.
6. Bowling’s bid to get into the Olympics. Mike shared that bowling is on the short list to be considered for the Olympic Games in Japan for 2020.

Expectations have changed. For your association’s web page, you need to be updating it regularly or those who use it and see no changes will lose interest.
The bowl.com app has over 3,000 downloads since it was recently launched. Please share this with your league secretaries when you have your Secretary Workshop. 60% of people in our country have a Smartphone. The bowl.com app offers the following:

This year was also the 10th anniversary for USBC.

Awards Banquet – Saturday evening hosted by CUSBC
The Awards Banquet had fewer in attendance than the one last year in Sacramento. This is the second year that CUSBC has tried this event. It is put on to honor
any CUSBC Hall of Fame inductees as well as any other individuals being honored by the CUSBC. Honorees this year included Carlos Alestra/Strikes Unlimited in
Rocklin for Coach of the Year; Hall of Fame inductees Donna Morales for Meritorious Service and Debbie Ayers for Superior Performance; and, three youth bowlers
– Wesley Low from Palmdale, Mia Singletary from Daly City and James Knapp from North Hollywood who each received $500 youth scholarships.
2015 California USBC Association Annual Meeting - Sun., June 14, 2015
Annual Meeting was called to order at 9am by President Rosie Parker. Following Roll Call, the 2014 minutes were approved. We were handed an excerpted version of the 2014 minutes as we entered the room for this meeting and were told that the complete minutes, which was like 112 pages from last year, are available
on the CUSBC website. There were a total of 95 adult delegates and 29 youth delegates for a total of 124 eligible to vote.
Under “Committee Reports” The Budget and Finance report drew the most interest because of the proposed increase the State dues from $1 to $2. Chairman
Andre Eubanks explained that State has had a $42,000 loss and in a position where they really want to help associations by providing some much-needed awards
that USBC has stopped giving and said their intent is to develop more for youth and investing in our future.
Next we went into the Championship Tournaments report. The event was held for thirteen weeks in Oroville. Entries for both events are down this year for the
Open and Women with 265 for Women and 375 entries for Open to date. The Youth State takes place in July for two weekends in Dublin & Fremont.
BVL Tournament had 218 registered to bowl and only 183 bowled in Modesto this past March. For 2016, they are moving the date to May 14 and the event will
be at Keystone Lanes in Norwalk. There is a proposed change for the 2016 BVL to change the Men’s Classic division from 190 and up to a higher number to help
even out the men’s divisions more since this top Classic division has had so many participants. Stay tuned!
CA State Singles is scheduled for Oct. 17-18 at Winnetka Bowl (formerly Canoga Park Bowl). It was reported that 42% of the entries for this event are walk-ins.
And, now Youth can also bowl in this event!
Diddy Watts State Youth Singles Challenge (State Scratch.) Finals are Aug. 1-2 at AMF Visalia Lanes.
New Business-Legislative. The first Proposal (By-Laws Proposal B-1) to be voted on was for the State dues increase to be raised from $1 to $2. The delegates
rejected this proposal and it was not passed.
The next Proposal (By-Laws Proposal B-2) was to eliminate the 3rd Vice President on the CUSBC Board that was to be filled by a youth member of the association
14 years or older. This proposal was not passed by the delegates so this position will remain and be filled by a youth. The third Proposal (By-Laws Proposal B-3)
was to change what constituted a quorum for the CUSBC board from 12 to 10 and this proposal was passed.
Nominating/Election. All incumbents were voted in to serve on the CUSBC Board.
President Rosie Parker and Assoc. Manager Larry Peppers were elected to serve as State Delegates for the 2016 USBC National Convention which will be held in
Las Vegas, NV. The date and location for the 2016 State convention was not mentioned. The 2015 USBC National conventions will be held in Las Vegas.

Kim was there. So was Khloe.
Same with Kourtney. They
were all making the rounds last
Wednesday at AMF Woodlake
Lanes in the west San Fernando Valley community of
Woodland Hills. It was all part
of the filming of their reality
TV series, “Keeping Up With
the Kardashians.” And they
were bowling, along with one
of Kourtney’s sons.
Word got out to this reporter about 5 that night, an hour or
so after the Kardashian group
had made their entrance.
But by then, it was too
late. This reporter never got a
chance to rush over on the 30minute trek to the bowling center. After a phone call went out
to Woodlake Lanes, a bowling
center spokesperson revealed
that the Kardashian gang had
come and gone. No photos and
not much of a story.
A Woodlake Lanes insider
later reported that the Kardashian group stayed for an
“hour or two. They were just
regular people, regular folks.”
The Kardashian group pops
up at Woodlake Lanes “every
so often,” the insider said.
And it usually takes about six
months after the group’s appearance before the show goes
on the air. One tidbit about the
Kardashians’ bowling visit:

Lanes was doing cartwheels
soon after the Kardashian gang
had left the scene. That was
a woman named Robyn, who
was able to land Kim’s used
water bottle as a souvenir –
and was savoring the moment.

reporter will get the scoop!

provide comments on the resolutions regarding player punishment fines.”
John Weber had said at last
month’s Fountain Valley Open
in Orange County that Weber’s
and Forkel’s actions had represented a “conduct” violation.

“heat of the moment” and that
he “didn’t think there was a
[continuing] problem between
the two.” Forkel, who works
part time in the pro shop at

really cool guy.
“So we’re good. It’s not
that big of a deal.”Forkel added that the incident has been
“put to sleep where it’s supposed to be until the next time
and the next crisis.”
Forkel, co-host of Bowling Evolved, joked on the June
21 program’s video broadcast
over the Internet that Pete Weber was welcome to appear on
the show so “we can discuss
the event one more time.”
Forkel added during the show
that “there are no hard feelings.”
The incident took place
while Weber and Forkel were
bowling in adjoining lanes
against different opponents.
Forkel, a Van Nuys High
School graduate who had spent
most of his life in the San Fernando Valley before moving to
Nevada, defeated Weber twice
during match play at the Suncoast event.
As luck would have it, the
two bowlers wound up in the
Suncoast championship match.
Weber, of St. Ann, Mo., won
the title match, 224-212, and
earned $12,000. Forkel picked
up $7,000 for his second-place
finish. Forkel, a Henderson,
Nev., resident, said he wasn’t
thinking about the incident
when he faced Weber in the
championship match.
Weber got the first two
strikes in the 10th frame to
seal the win and join Norm
Duke as the only players to
win U.S. Open titles on both
the PBA and PBA50 Tours.
Forkel will compete next in
the 12th annual New Mexico
Open, a scratch event, to be
held Aug. 14-16 at Tenpins &

This tournament will consist of a six (6) game Singles Event (two 3 game blocks) moving pairs after game three.
The tournament shall be conducted on a handicap basis – 90% of 210.
Bowlers need not belong to a senior league to be eligible for entry in this tournament.
Entrants may enter only once.
the entering average shall be determined by the following priorities from an established league:
a. Highest USBC certified league average (minimum of 21 games) dated as of mAy 31, 2015. If none,
b. Highest current SUMMER average (minimum of 21 games, bowler must bring league sheet). If none,
c. Highest published average (minimum of 21 games) for the 2013-14 season. If none,
d. Highest published average (minimum of 21 games) for the 2012-13 season. If none,
e. Assigned average: Women 165; Men 175.
Bowlers are responsible for verifying their own averages. Any falsification of the highest known average will result in immediate
disqualification. If a “sport” league average is the bowler’s only average, then it will be adjusted per the chart in the USBC
rulebook to determine the correct entering average. Failure to use the correct average shall disqualify score if submitted average
is lower than correct average.
USBC rules 319a2 (10 pin increase in average), 319d (reporting of prize winnings) and 319e (15 pin increase in accumulated
tournament average) will be waived.

+81 to make the Semi Finals
Tourney Hi Qualifiers were

regular ABTA Event for the

Stan drew the Match Series
$655 an nmatched 698.We will
estimate the Series at $1,400
Saturday at Bowlium. Angela drew the Mystery Match
Doubles $1,355. A 340 with
no match also. We estimate the
Mystery Doubles at $2,400 at
Bowlium.
The semis took the floor
and scores still high, saw Ben
Masteran fire a big +190 to be
top seed and bowl for the Title
with Edward Anonas 2nd at
+165. Anonas would get a first
round bye and enter in round
two. It took men +86, and ladies +27 to make the top 16
Single Elim Finals.
Masteran then drew for the
Match Game and $1,655. He
drew a 274. No one matched
that score so we will have an
estimated $3,000 Match Game
at Bowlium Saturday.
TOP 16 and Finalists losing in the first round in 1016th places were Ray Saucedo, Danny Guevarra, Anthony
Marquez, Dom La Guardia,
Johnny Sikkens, Kmel Cunanan, and Faye Josefat. They
earned checks of $100.
6-9th places were Edward
Anonas, Anna Bautista, Christine Cheung, and Joseph Lung.
Eliminated in round 3 were
Dennis Kelsey, and Michael
Duran in 4th and 5th Places.
Now it was ABTA veteran
Pablo Castro and a young man
in his second ABTA event

match was a good one, close
throughout. D’Marco got a
big double to take the lead
and finally won in a 225-203
count. Pablo was 3rd with
Great Bowling and $200 with
D’Marco off to the Title game

The title game was on.
Both bowlers opened one in
first two frames. Ben again
opened in 3rd fram. D’Marco
led by 16 pins. Then in frames
4-5 D’Marco guttered, 5
out, split the 6th, 9 out. Ben
opened 6th and struck big in
the 7th followed with a big
double to take a lead for the
first time. D’Marco opened
and Ben with another double
in frame 10, won the match
by a 206-184 margin. (all
scores include hcp). His first
ever ABTA Title and a $1,400
Paycheck.
It is nice to have Ben return to the ABTA after back
surgery. He is well now as we
can see. This is his first title.

through a 7 1/2 hour extensive
back surgery last year and is
getting strength to bowl again.

Fontana. He is single and has
a pretty girlfriend Simia, who
was on hand at West Covina.
He is the son of a super bowler
and fine man ABTA Champion Marcus Lemons, now deceased, and who was looking
down on us that eve and Proud
of D’Marco. Also his Grandfather and ABTA Bowler
Ronnie Lemons was on hand
to watch D’Marco bowl in the
event. He used a Virtual Gravity drilled by Tony at Gardena
Bowl.
Louis “Grizz Fan” Bachus
was last standing in the 3-6-9
roll-off. He missed on shot 4
so that pot goes for $2,000 at
Bowlium. He got a nice $100
Consolation for his work.

BURBANK — It’s official. I have surpassed my own addiction and have moved on to pushing. Actually, I’ve been
tempting the youth for years and it’s high time I accepted
my role in this glorious business.
It’s true. I have one Team and three sets of Doubles
going to Northern California for the Youth State Championships! I will not lie, I am delighted to see the excitement and
pleasure coursing through their not-yet-developed brains.
My first trip to the Youth State tournament is a blur.
Drunk on the excitement and being scared out of my mind
took the details from my not-yet-developed brain. I do know
I felt honored and appreciated.
With this in mind, I encourage all to participate in any
of the major tournaments that you are able, whether you
are 8 years old or 80 years old. You meet incredible people, sharing the same passion for the sport you love. Who
knows? You might even win!
