Color Focus: Browns Created By: Taylor Usry Original Post: http://www.spectrumnoir.com/color-focus-browns/ I began by coloring the base of the flower pot using TN7. I was not too concerned with blending at this point. Next I used TN7 again, to add color in a flicking motion, from the sides of the pot toward the center. Tip: for me, it is easier to always flick from left to right, so I move the card stock around to accommodate that. I repeated the process using TN8, not going out quite as far. I did this twice, to provide two layers of TN8 (each time, not going toward the center quite as far as the previous layer). Finally I went over the whole base of the pot with TN7 again, and then added a small bit of EB8 to the outer edges. I colored the lip of the pot using the same method described above. I started coloring the flower petals with GB8. I then used GB10, flicking from the center toward the ends of the petals. To finish the petals, I went back and added more GB8 until I was satisfied with the color. (Note: I knew that the lighter color, GB8, would remove some of the darker tone of the GB10) The flower center was colored with GB10. I colored the little cat with GB8. Using GB10, I outlined around the edges of her face and paw. Using EB5, I again outlined the edges of her face, but did not extend toward the center as far as I did with the GB10. Tip: I do this very thin outline using a series of small dots, with the tip of my bullet nib, rather than trying to draw a line or color in a circular motion. I know I will be blending the color, so this method provides the shading I want. Next, using GB8, I color in a circular motion around the face and head. I go right over the layers of darker color I have added, to blend and soften them. I continue doing this until I am satisfied with the color. The cat’s nose is colored with TN7; I also added a bit of color under the tufts of hair in her ears with it. I tried to keep this card somewhat masculine: my only embellishment is a bit of twine.
