In the dairy sector a recent study by a veterinary pharmaceutical company alarmingly found that 85% of dairy herds in Northern Ireland had liver fluke infections. In the dairy cow liver fluke infections reduce productivity and can reduce milk yields by 10 to 15%. Milk quality and conception rates also suffer dramatically as a result of infection. All cattle are susceptible to infection regardless of age and therefore treatment of all bovines is to be recommended. It is vitally important to be aware that cattle never develop immunity to liver fluke irrespective of age. Therefore, this necessitates timely ongoing treatment for this parasite. Making the correct choice for effective liver fluke control has become more and more important in recent years. The cost of an effective treatment is minimal in comparison to the loss of production of milk yield or DLWG. The agreement will turn environment issues from barriers to business into economic growth opportunities. The deal is that the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), while firmly regulating, will work to reduce red tape. In turn the companies invest heavily in the environment. Linden Foods and Linergy are committing significant investment in the environment. In addition to many environmental benefits it will mean them reducing their carbon emissions by a staggering 25%. The Environment Minister, speaking at Linden Food Headquarters in Dungannon said: “Last year, I outlined my vision for the environment agenda in Northern Ireland: ‘A Better Environment – A Stronger Economy’. My message was clear, long-term economic prosperity and well-being is only possible through the responsible management of the environment. “I believe the biggest impact will come from the main users of our natural resources, Maurice Kettyle - Managing Director collected the award on the night and was pleased to receive a Highly Commended second place. the business community. We need to help businesses to identify opportunities for growth that reduces reliance on finite resources, reuse and reduce waste and to rethink products. “I told my Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) to regulate firmly but also to be more supportive of progressive businesses which have a good compliance record. This first Prosperity Agreement is a great example, helping these progressive and compliant companies in our critical agri-food sector to reduce environmental impact in ways that boost their competitiveness in their markets. “There is no shortage of talk about sustainability. There is, however, a shortage of real action. This Prosperity Agreement shows Northern Ireland is different. My environment agency has sat down with two companies and the parties have agreed real actions to bring environment and economic objectives together. “Under this agreement, NIEA will redirect resources from bureaucratic processes that create no value to actions that support Linden Foods and Linergy improve their environmental performance in their own operations and throughout their supply-chain. I applaud both Linden and Linergy for their vision and real desire to be at the forefront of progressive sustainable business here”. Operating from Granville Industrial Estate in Dungannon, Linergy has been producing renewable fuels from organic waste and animal by-products since 2005. Several million pounds has been spent to establish the state of the art rendering plant in Co. Tyrone. The result of which is the production of two-renewable biomass fuels: Tallow oil and Meat & Bone meal. The award winning company is leading the way with biosecurity and provides a hugely successful service for farmers to dispose of dead animals very quickly by bringing the carcasses to a dedicated area of the plant. “Linergy was the clear choice of the judges in what was a very competitive category. What set them apart from the others shortlisted was both the innovative nature of the company, its recent global first Prosperity Agreement and the fact it ticked all the boxes when it came to environmental credentials.” Said; Richard Buckley – Business Eye Editor In August this year Environment Minister Mark H Durkan signed the world’s first Prosperity Agreement with LINERGY and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA). It’s an unusual partnership when competing companies collaborate to start a new business; but when faced with a radically changing operating environment rivalries quickly disappear. That was the situation for Linden Foods, Fane Valley and Dunbia; three significant players in the Northern Ireland agri-food industry, who joined forces to created Linergy. Richard Moore, Managing Director – Linergy, commented: “It has been an exciting few months for Linergy, first with the signing of the Prosperity Agreement and now the winning of this prestigious award. We have a great team back at Linergy and great relationships with the rural community so it is especially pleasing when recognised at this level for GREEN Company of The Year and given the caliber of the others shortlisted, we feel very proud.” Banbridge T: 028 4066 2742 Find Us On Facebook!
