A Note From Dave When I started Archery Past in 1980, I sold spined, tapered and finished Rose City and then ACME Port Orford Cedar shafts, and I made custom leather archery accessories. Bill Sweetland (Sweetland Compressed Cedar shafts) and Bob Brooks of Eugene were my arrow mentors. I made my first back quiver from the directions in the 1978-79 Alaska Bowmen, published by Jay Massey, Dick Hamilton and Doug Borland. These guys were leaders in traditional archery, although at that time it must have seemed like tradition was lost, especially when making your own archery tackle. They were people I looked up to then, and I still do now. I learned from them. I’m still emphasizing teaching others to make their tackle. And then having them teach another. Many of my friends and acquaintances work with schools, clubs and events that have teaching seminars for adults and kids. There’s nothing like the feeling of seeing a new archer make their first bowstring; or shooting their new arrows they just finished. We need to pass on the skills others taught us. I believe it’s the only way we’ll keep tradition alive in archery and bowhunting. And the definition of ‘traditional’ is changing; or at least for me it is. It’s not always bad, but we need to show new shooters there is an option to carbon arrows, or modular broadheads or even factory 2 $12.50 $12.50 V-42 made accessories. We need to make them feel welcome even if they are only shooting a traditional bow. Then show them how we used to do it. Just like Jay Massey, Bill Sweetland and others did for me. Remember it is the attitude as well as the equipment. As you may have noticed, prices, items and options on items change weekly. As soon as a catalog is printed, there will be a change from a distributor or supplier. I’ll try to honor prices as much as I can, but sometimes it’s not possible. Wood shafts continue to be the most volatile item with availability and specie of wood changing the most. I now have Surewood Douglas Fir and Hildebrand Sitka Spruce in all spines. Others as available will be stocked. I’ve dropped all packs. Kathy Kelly packs, my favorites, as well as some others will be on a ‘special order’ only. There are just too many options in packs and everyone wants to feel and try it on which doesn’t work well in a mail order situation. And there is the internet. As long as I travel to as many shoots as I do, being home to immediately answer internet orders doesn’t always work. I’ll do it as soon as I can, but if you need it ‘yesterday’, you may need to call a competitor. I’ll understand. Both the Stealth and Hunter models are made from heavy latigo leather with a strap going over the opposite shoulder of the side the quiver is on. The Stealth is adjustable for right or left hand. It is slightly smaller than the Hunter, which is available in right or left hand, not both. The Hunter also has a file pocket on the side. Both work well with fanny packs or back packs. Both have a foam hood to keep broadheads sharp and come with a fleece fletch cover and a 2-blade solo stalker, (see page 7). I prefer the Stealth and use it for trail shoots. A great warranty makes this a good investment. The new Dark Horse combines the Matrix view, now 180 degrees, with the windows on the other half like the T5. The net also opens on the top for ‘no net’ viewing. It comes in Ground Swat camo pattern. It has a 5’ X 5’ floor space, 6 feet 4-inch shooting diameter, 74” roof height, roof zipper for ventilation and easy access zippered door opening. Combine this with a double bull seat, either the small or large for an additional $20.00 (with blind purchase only) and you have a comfortable and effective blind. Some of these points are common knowledge, some are from my experience and that of my friends who use wood shafts exclusively for hunting. Wood shafts are a natural product; they may have some variations. Inspect for cracks when making your arrows and especially after hitting a hard object when shooting. You may want to keep the arrow spine about the same as the weight of the bow. These arrows have to bend around the bow a lot more since longbows usually aren’t center shot. For a 60-pound at 28-inch longbow, start with a 55-60 or 60-65 spine. I shoot 60-65 pound tapered shafts from a 65 pound 27-inch draw Liberty Longbow. Again, shoot some and be sure. Arrow Weight Most shafts are spined but not weighed. Shafts may vary as much as 250300 grains in a box of a thousand. Theoretically, you could have that same variation in a dozen arrows that are not matched. How close do they have to be matched? As close as you need to have confidence in your arrows. Most of us can’t shoot the difference of 30 grains or more. Mine? They’re matched to the same degree that I sell them to you—plus or minus 10 grains or less. (In comparison, a nock weighs about 15 grains.) One ounce equals 437 1/2 grains. Most concerned bowhunters use as heavy an arrow as feasible, usually about 8-10 grains for each pound of bow weight. In the race for speed, lighter is thought to be better. For hunting, heavier is more stable, more forgiving for that cold morning shot, quiets your bow, and allows for exceptional penetration taking all things into consideration. Bare shafts can gain or lose weight from the time they are weighed. When finished, they remain stable. Be a knowledgeable traditional bowhunter. Weigh your arrows! Spine In most bows, 5-10 pound spine groups will work well. I prefer 5-pound groups, especially from a longbow. Lighter arrows seem to have more flight problems with spine and weight variation. There may be some variation between spine testers. If you want exact spine match to your shafts, buy enough so you can do that. Or you can pay for someone to re-spine and match to the shaft you have on their spine tester. Straightness Good wood shafts are straight and shouldn’t need much straightening. Slight irregularities can be removed by bending the shaft in the opposite direction of the bend, over the heel of your hand. Most wood can be straightened easily, especially Port Orford Cedar. Norway Pine is very similar to cedar in color and ease of straightening and is slightly heavier. Harder woods, like some pines, fir, and the hardwoods, may take a little longer to straighten. Some may have to be heated. I don’t use some of the tools that smooth or flatten a side of the shaft to straighten it. I like my shafts round. If you notice small perpendicular lines in the shaft near a bend, they may be chrysals (stress marks around the shaft, across the grain). Chrysals indicate that the shaft is broken. Discard it! Shoot only good wood arrows. Break cracked arrows. (Better to break it than have it explode upon release.) Choosing Your Spine: Recurves Recurves are close to centershot; the arrow doesn’t have to work around the riser much, so you usually have more leeway in choosing your spine for recurves. Choose your arrow spine five pounds minimum over your bow weight at your draw. Be aware that wood arrows are spined for a 28-inch draw. For every inch over 28 inches you draw, add another 5 pounds. Likewise, for each inch under 28 inches, subtract 5 pounds. Example: A bow 70 pounds at 29 inches should use a 80-85 spine (bow weight = 70 pounds + 5 pounds for the extra inch over 28 inches + 5 pounds for good measure). It’s best to shoot the spine and try it for sure. I shoot tapered 85-90 pound spine out of a 65-pound, 27-inch Blacktail Recurve. Stiffer arrows last longer (unless you lose them) and can be heavier. 8 Details And Types of Shafts The wood shaft market is changing, and it’s for the better. Hildebrand’s Sitka Spruce shafts are getting better, if that was possible and are available in a full 32” length. Douglas Fir from Surewood Shafts (formerly Oregon Traditional Arrows) are back in production and are the best fir I’ve seen. Most of the production is in 5/16” and 11/32” but 23/64” is also available in the heavier weights. Rogue River Port Orford Cedar Shafts are under a new owner and the shafts look good as well as the availability. They are only available in tapered shafts. I still maintain a few of the old Acme’s as well as Lodgepole and Norway pine and Ramin. Spines are limited in those selections so check before placing an order. Premium Premium shafts are hand graded, hand spined, (5 pound groups), and weighed in groups of Plus/minus 10 grains or less, mostly less. Woods available as premiums are Fir, Spruce, ACME Cedar and Rogue River Cedar Standard Standard shafts are spined from the factory, but are weight matched and graded by hand to the same specs as the premiums. These include spruce, fir, ramin and some cedar. The only difference between Premium and Standard shafts is labor for hand spining and weighing in closer groups. All will make great arrows! Sizes Sizes are 5/16” in all woods for spines 35-39, 40-45; 11/32” for all woods spined to 60-64 and some to 70-74; heavier weights in 23/64”. There is some overlap so call with your preferences Tapered Shafts Tapered shafts are the same shafts as above, but tapered to your specifications, usually 5/16” or 9/32” on the nock end. Barrelled shafts, (actually a double taper) are available, usually with an 11/32” point end. Finished Shafts and Arrows Finished shafts and arrows are available from all available shafts. Most arrows are finished with Bohning products**, but gasket lacquer is also available. If you have a preference, please let me know. ** Remember: Repair Bohning arrows with Fletch-tite, Gasket Lacquer arrows with Duco! Other Shaft Options Other shaft options include Carbon Express Carbon Heritage and Easton Aluminum in Legacy and Game Getter. Of these, I prefer aluminum since they come in more sizes, hold up well, cost less and can be easily fletched or repaired, especially for youth arrows. They also accept the glue on nocks and come in a variety of sizes to match bow weights with out adding heavier points, inserts or weight tubes. Legacy (wood grain) available in 1916, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2117, 2216, & 2219 sizes. Game Getters are now black and only available in 500 (2016), 400 (2117) and 300 (2317). Carbon Shafts come in three sizes-150, 250 and 350. They may require ‘tuning’ to get the best flight. I do carry weight tubes and heavier points and inserts. I can make a recommendation but determining what you need will be ultimately up to you. I recommend inserts for the nock so you can use regular glue on nocks rather than the small uni-nocks. Treestand Basics According to Dave I have learned that there are three important considerations when using treestands: safety, location and comfort. To learn more about location, comfort, and safety, see my Web site www. archerypast.net. I sell treestands and accessories that have been manufactured according to the Treestand Manufacturers Association (TMA) guidelines. There are guidelines for treestands, restraining devices (belts, harnesses and vests) and climbing aids such as ladders, steps and lineman or climbing straps. Install your treestand in a live tree with no lean while using a lineman’s strap. If both your hands are free to work the straps, buckles and chains, you will be more comfortable about working 20 or so feet off the ground. You’ll also do a better job if you don’t rush. The same goes when you remove the treestand. I don’t use screw-in steps. They are illegal in most public land forests; they give a false sense of security, especially if they remain in the tree for an extended period of time or if they are used in thick-barked trees. Use strap-on steps or climbing sticks (my preference). They come in 4-foot sections or as a single long ladder. Once in the stand, secure yourself with a properly adjusted full-body harness. While a har ness works fine by itself, I’ve found that one of the vest/harness combos is more comfortable. Don’t climb into the stand with your bow and pack. Use a pull rope to bring your equipment to the stand. (I use two ropes—one for the bow and another for the pack.) The strap that hooks to Dave’s treestand in Alberta, Canada while on a whitetail hunt the treestrap (the treestrap with Dave Bzawy of Alberta Wilderness Guide Service. is the one that goes around the tree above your head) needs to hook easily so you can get in and out of the tree. The treestrap also needs to be at the correct height. When you’re sitting, it should be snug, pulling up slightly on your back. The treestrap will prevent you from falling far if you fall asleep or slip while standing to shoot. Other convenient accessories are hooks that strap or hook to your treestrap to hold your pack or bow. Adjust them so they’re easy to reach while sitting. Bright Eyes, Glow Clips or other reflecting tape or tacks will allow you to return to the stand in the dark. Use lots of them! When using wood shafts, you need to consider more than just spine and weight. 1. Choose the type of wood. You may need to research the type of wood shafts you want to use. I prefer Port Orford Cedar because of its straightness, strength, ease of working, good stain qualities and of course, odor. Availability is the problem with Port Orford Cedar. 2. Check for cross-grain and other imperfections such as knots, cracks and chrysals. I prefer grain running the length of the shaft, but that is rare today. I would stay at about 12-15 inches before the grain runs off the shaft (crosses in 12-15 inches). Choose the best end of the shaft for the nock end. For more arrow-making tips, see page 15, Working the shaft. Nocks #303+ #306SS #306+ Available in fluorescent yellow, red and blue. Also white, black, green and yellow (non-fluorescent). Choose a color that you can see. Right or left wing? Contrary to some advice, you will not notice a difference between right or left wing feathers unless you’re using extremely sensitive equipment, which is not the case with traditional equipment. Good, properly spined, heavy arrows, adequate feathers and the correct brace height and nocking point will eliminate any arrow flight problems. All Archery Past feathers are manufactured by Trueflight Feathers. I believe they are the best feathers available. I recommend cut-on-contact broadheads that can be re-sharpened. They must be re-sharpened or touched up regularly and after each shot. If you won’t put that effort into sharpening, use the replaceable blade type, like the Muzzy Phantom. I like three blades for overall flight and cutting effectiveness. I use Eclipse 2 blade and feel the penetration and cutting characteristics are just as effective. Sharpening is easy on either type. Of the few animals I have taken, I have used 3- and 2-blade heads. Whatever you shoot, they must be sharp—scary sharp! If you have a problem holding the correct angle, use the True-Angle, two-file system. After reshaping the edge, I use an Arkansas Medium stone to remove all file marks. Then I use a steel, carbide or ceramic hone to remove the “wire curl.” Finally, I strop with leather. (I cover my sight window with leather just for this purpose. Otherwise, I use the back of my armguard.) I use this process for two- and threeblade broadheads. On three-blade heads, I file two blades at a time. Item #MS34 14 $130.00 www.archerypast.net $90.00 19 Arrow Making Tools Bows Bows, According to Dave Dave’s Arrow-making Tips Have you just started traditional archery? I recommend a used bow or one of the produced bows on the market. If price is no problem, then by all means, call one of the custom bowyers and order what you and the bowyer decide. Longbow or recurve? If you’re coming from the dark side, then a recurve is easier to make the jump—more center shot, semi-pistol grip and more mass weight. You’ll have fewer change-over problems. After shooting a recurve, or if you want to make a complete change, grab a longbow and you’ll experience why many of us now shoot longbows more than we did 15 years ago. Lighter in the hand and the romantic feel are the reasons I like the longbow. I go back and forth, but mostly shoot a Liberty Longbow now. I’ll change again, I’m sure. Back quivers, wood arrows, custom recurves and longbows! These items are the mainstays of traditional archery. Most people can make their own arrows and back quivers, but what about bows? Bows are different. With a little information and basic tools, you can make your own bow. However, few people start in traditional archery by making bows. When people talk to me about bows, they often ask which bowyer to use and which bows to purchase. I have my preferences; read on you’ll find out what some of them are. I don’t stock custom bows, although I do recommend them. Stocking bows in all the draw weights, lengths and variety of options, ties up too much of my inventory money. I prefer to have you deal with the bowyer and get exactly what you want without buying a stock bow from me that’s only “close” to what you want. I do carry used bows, both custom and manufactured. Check my Web site (www.archerypast.net) for available bows. Rules for Choosing a Custom Bowyer 1. Find out what your buddy shoots. If he likes the bowyer, and of course the bow, start with his or her recommendation. 2. Call the bowyer. If you don’t like their attitude or answers, go to the next one on the list. I choose whose bows I shoot by the relationship I have with the bowyer. There are many bows on the market that are as good as the ones I use, but I know these guys. They’ll make good on warranties and options, and they will spend the time with prospective buyers. 3. I’m territorial. I shoot, hunt and work with bowyers in Oregon so I use their stuff. 4. Don’t buy a “paper bag” bow. Buy one you can be proud of owning and shooting, without having to wear a paper bag over your head. I hear too many people say, “I’d like to shoot a brand ‘x’ bow, but this is all I can afford.” Life is too short. 5. Make sure the bowyer pays the federal excise tax. Besides being the law, the Pittman Robertson excise tax supports hunter and bowhunter education programs, wildlife habitat improvement and huntable wildlife refuges. Support legitimate bowyers. Gold & Silver $4.00 $5.75 17 Arrow Making Tools Bows Bows, According to Dave Dave’s Arrow-making Tips Have you just started traditional archery? Item #373P $175.00 15 Sharpening Equipment Bow Accessories Bow and Arrow Cases Dave’s Sharpening Tips #4240 For sharpening, I use a Nicholson #18 or a Mill Smooth file. Colors, styles of cut, spliced, three or four fletch—all of these choices are waiting to be made. I prefer white crown dip and feathers, so I can see the arrows better when they are in flight. Item #GORST Brown $18.00 $120.00 25 Double Bull Blinds Leather Archery Equipment The Dark Horse Hair Calf Tab This blind is still the blind others try to compare to in quality and ease of set up. This is a great way to introduce kids to the patience needed to hunt by ambush. They can do a little squirming and not spook the animals. (I’d be lying if I told you I haven’t slept in mine.) Item #DBDH Recurve size (74” center height) Item #DBSS Small seat $30.00 Item #DBLS Large Seat $38.00 Ground Blind Data with Dave! • • Never surprise a deer with a ground blind. Always net the windows. To Brush or Not! – In thick areas, where it is difficult to see beyond 50 yards, brush the blind and make it disappear. When hunting a thick spot where the deer gets its first look at the blind from 30-40 yards away, the deer will be surprised; the blind will spook it off. In open areas where deer can see the blind from 100 yards away, set up the blind where the deer want to be. Item #113 • • • The Material – The purpose of using a blind is to hide from an animal’s eyes, ears and nose, as well as mother nature. The material wrapping your hide needs to be quiet, dark and wind and weatherproof. Camouflage – Ground Swat from Pattern Masters is a wide open, non-specific camo designed from Mother Nature’s natural shapes. Ease of Setup – The Double Bull internalframework is the only cam style on the market. It tightens the fabric, or you can rotate the cam to tighten it if it stretches.
