Our mission: Successful
Learning for ALL Students!
Certified Enrollment...
During the month of October, school districts across Iowa count their students. This count is held
statewide for funding purposes. A school district’s budget is determined by the number of students
that it serves. The Chariton School District has not certified our count with the state at the time of this
printing, but preliminary numbers indicate we are down enrollment from 1360 last October to 1298
this October. This is a decrease of 62 students. The district will be working through the budget reduction process due to the drop in enrollment. Less students equals less funding to work with for the
2016-2017 school year.
Students Present @ ITEC Conference
On October 13, five students from the high school and
middle school along with Jen Schlomer (MS Instructional Coach) presented sessions at the Iowa Technology Education Connection (ITEC) conference held at the Iowa
Events Center in Des Moines. The students presented
information on their participation in Twitter conversations via #iastuchat. #iastuchat presents questions to students and educators statewide about educational topics. It is a way to give voice to students about their own
education system and how to improve it. They also
helped to present information about the Chariton Community School District’s technology curriculum.
Kindergarten & 1st Grade Program Scheduled
Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 12, 2015 for an event you won’t want to miss! Please join the
Columbus students, teachers, and parents for the Kindergarten/1st Grade Fall Program. The Kindergarten
and 1st Grade classes from Columbus will present their music performances on Thursday, November 12th at
the Johnson Auditorium. Kindergarten will perform at 6:00 PM and 1st Grade will perform at 7:00 PM. The
Elementary Music Program is under the direction of Mrs. Laura Shelton. Please join us!
Reminder…..Van Allen DropOff Time is 8:00 am
The Van Allen doors open to students at 8:00 a.m. Students who arrive before 8:00 may enter the cafeteria to
eat breakfast or wait under the canopy for the doors to
open. If your child is not participating in school breakfast, do not bring them to school before 8:00. Students
will be allowed to wait inside if the temperature is below
10 degrees or the weather is inclement.
Please make sure your child is wearing adequate clothing
for the change in temperature. If possible drop your child
off closer to 8:00 a.m. as this will help with the congestion outside. Thanks!

by Ken Harrison
On October 26th we had a very productive School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) meeting; during this meeting a member asked the question about early out Wednesday’s and how we use those days. Our teaming process explained and how, in turn, that benefits our students. Recently, I came across an article from Solution Tree that did a fantastic job explaining the process of Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s). The following excerpt can be found at:
http://www.allthingsplc.info.
“Inherent to a PLC are a persistent disquiet with the status quo and a constant search for a better way to achieve goals
and accomplish the purpose of the organization. Systematic processes engage each member of the organization in an
ongoing cycle of:

Gathering evidence of current levels of student learning

Developing strategies and ideas to build on strengths and address weaknesses in that learning

Implementing those strategies and ideas

Analyzing the impact of the changes to discover what was effective and what was not

Applying new knowledge in the next cycle of continuous improvement
The goal is not simply to learn a new strategy, but instead to create conditions for a perpetual learning environment in
which innovation and experimentation are viewed not as tasks to be accomplished or projects to be completed but as
ways of conducting day-to-day business—forever. Furthermore, participation in this process is not reserved for those
designated as leaders; rather, it is a responsibility of every member of the organization.”

Emergency Notification System Options!
Notifications
Should inclement weather or an emergency situation occur which would result in the
closing of school, the school district will utilize a number of methods to notify the public. Please do not rely on any one single medium, check several to be sure.
Infinite Campus Parent Notification System
The emergency calling system uses the data in Infinite Campus to make the calls. You
control your own calls/texts/emails through your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account. When you log into your portal, on the left hand tool bar there is a choice of
“contact preferences”. After clicking on that, you will see your telephone option.
Choose which number or email, whether you want text or voice, and the types of messages you want.
To get inclement weather delays or cancellations, choose
“emergency”. You can click as many as you would like.
District Web Site & Facebook Page
A message will be posted on the home page of the district web site and also posted on
the District’s Facebook page. This message may include more detailed information
that can be included in the Infinite Campus messages. (www.chariton.k12.ia.us)
Television/Radio
Notifications will be made to KCCI, WHO, WOI, and KIIC Radio. Several of these
news outlets have websites in which you can sign up for alerts and notifications. Check
on their web sites, typically under the weather tab, for more information.
Open Enrollment Information
Parents/guardians considering the use of the open enrollment option to enroll their children OUT to another public
school or open enroll IN to the Chariton district should be aware of the following date: March 1, 2016—last date for
regular open enrollment requests for the 2016-2017 school year.
If the student meets the definition of good cause under 281-Iowa Administrative Code 17.4(1) because of a change of
residence or is an entering kindergarten student for the 2016-2017 school year, the application can be accepted after
March 1 for the 2016-2017 school year.
A pupil who transfers school districts under open enrollment in all grades 10-12 shall not be eligible to participate in
interscholastic contests and competitions during the first 90 school days of the transfer.
Parents/guardians of open enrolled students whose income falls below 160% of the federal poverty guidelines are eligible for transportation assistance. For further details, contact the superintendent’s office at (641) 774-5967.
A parent/guardian may withdraw their open enrollment at anytime during the school year and the students may return to
their resident district.
