He was born in Chichester, on 25th November, 1842, son of the artist James Hardy, Sr. (18011879) and younger brother of James Hardy, Jr. (1832-1889). After a short time with the 7th Somerset Volunteers, Hardy borrowed some money from his brother and travelled to Paris. In 1864 he entered the Beaux Arts to study under the battle artist, Pielse. He returned to England in 1868 and found his work was in great demand. He was often invited to country estates to paint portraits, sporting pictures and animal studies. Hardy continued to enjoy commissions for portraits, animal studies and hunting scenes, but he decided to concentrate on painting genre subjects. From about 1870 his career flourished and he was elected a member of a number of societies including The Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He exhibited 46 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1864 and 1919 whilst also exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institute. Hermanus worked in both Durgerdam and Amsterdam between 1832 and 1873 and he was made a member of the Royal Academy of Amsterdam in 1840 and elected to the Rotterdam society in 1841. The artist exhibited regularly at the Living Artists exhibitions in Amsterdam and he even exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1876. Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. specialised in painting seascapes. In these, he achieved great renown for his vivid and atmospheric skies that became the trademark of his works. This scene depicts a blustery day on one of the many large estuaries found on the Dutch coast. A fishing vessel is about to be hauled to safety by three figures; one wading into the shallows with a rope and pole the other two waiting in readiness. A small crowd has gathered to witness the scene. There is an element of drama and the work has an intensely atmospheric sky. The clouds are breaking and they reveal a gloriously blue sky with a shaft of sunlight illuminating the waves and suggesting the calm to come. The artist’s attention to detail is stunning. Every aspect of the composition, from the translucent sea and the windswept trees to the animation of the figures, is beautifully painted. Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. died on the 5th November 1882 in Haarlem. His works are in many prominent private and public collections including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Boymans in Rotterdam, Glasgow City Art Gallery, Kelvingrove, the Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. In 1827 he went to The Hague Drawing Academy where he studied under van Hove. In 1834 he won prizes at the Academy and at 23 he made his debut at the General Exhibition of Dutch Living Masters. By 1840 Leickert had moved to the studio of the great artist Andreas Schelfhout and he became one of his most gifted students. He began to paint winter as well as summer landscapes, absorbing Schelfhout’s working methods and emulating his master by using a high viewpoint in his pictures, creating a panoramic effect. After a while, Leickert demonstrated that he could paint more complex compositions and he began to lower the horizon line and incorporate more water views. Leickert moved to Amsterdam in 1848 to establish himself as an independent painter. Works produced from this date until the 1870s are considered to be the artist’s best. He usually found his motifs by the water’s edge and he sought out places where there was activity, making hundreds of sketches for later use in the studio. He was not interested in portraying industrialisation just tranquillity and a nostalgic Romanticism. His last known painting was done in 1896 and he died at the grand old age of 91 in 1907. He attended the Royal Kensington School of Art where he was deemed to be a very promising young artist. After his studies Todd returned to Suffolk and specialised in still life subjects. His early training and education in the technique of old master still life painters is clearly recognisable; his work has a rather Dutch quality and he is widely regarded as one of the finest painters of grapes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and also at the Ipswich Fine Art Society between 1875 and 1897. Although blinded in one eye at the age of 20 he went on to become an artist of world renown and President of the Royal Academy, London. Alongside Stubbs, Munnings is regarded as one of the two great English masters of Sporting Art. Starting out as an apprentice at a Norfolk lithographers between 1893 and 1898, he trained as an artist, attending the Académie Julien in Paris in 1902/3 before moving to Newlyn, Cornwall in 1911. He was sent as a war artist to France towards the end of World War 1. In 1919 Munnings moved to Castle House in Dedham where he lived until his death in 1959. In the 1920s his reputation grew and in 1926 he was elected to the Royal Academy, having first exhibited there in 1898. He was elected President in 1944. Although Munnings is best known for his studies of horses, his landscapes painted between 1898 and 1920 provide an excellent record of the way of life of rural England. From 1920 onwards his reputation as an equine artist became international, travelling worldwide to complete commissions for many of the most famous racehorse owners. His artistic talent was apparent from an early age and he studied painting under Pasquini and Ciseri. In his early career the artist painted some portrait and flower subjects but he is best known for his ecclesiastical subjects depicting cardinals in their fine robes. These paintings are often humorous but are painted with fine attention to detail. The artist's use of rich purples and crimsons give his paintings a jewel-like quality and confirm his place as one of the finest artists of this genre. Landini exhibited his works in Florence and Paris; his final exhibition was in 1911 at the Society of French Artists. Kennedy studied art in London and began exhibiting his work from an early age. Before he was 24 he had shown at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy and he then went on to exhibit regularly at the Royal Academy and in the provinces. During the early 1930s Cecil Kennedy married Winifred Aves who was very skilled at creating the beautiful flower arrangements that Kennedy painted. Over the years the couple collected many mid-eighteenth century Waterford vases which continually featured in his work. During WW2 Kennedy spent time in Antwerp and it was here that he familiarized himself with the Dutch and Flemish Old Master flower paintings which greatly influenced his painting style and technique. From the 1950s until the 1970s Kennedy exhibited regularly at The Fine Art Society. The artist had many important patrons during his life including the Duke of Windsor, the Astors and Queen Mary who noticed a ladybird that Kennedy had painted on the stem of a flower and Kennedy always incorporated a ladybird into his paintings thereafter. Lord Thomson was also a great admirer of Kennedy's work. Cecil Kennedy is widely regarded as the finest British painter of flowers of the 20th century. He studied at the Academy of Fine Art in St. Petersburg where he won a gold medal and a travel scholarship in 1868. He used this scholarship to travel to Paris where he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and worked with Leon Bonnat. During his early career Harlamoff painted many genre and religious subjects and he also became an established portrait painter. Two of his more important sitters were the Tsar Alexander II and Prince Demidoff and he also painted Yvan Tourgueniev and Pauline Viardot-Garcia. By the 1880s Harlamoff was concentrating on his paintings of Bohemian children and young peasant girls. It was these subjects, which he painted with enormous sensitivity, that gained the artist international fame and recognition. Queen Victoria greatly admired one such work of children playing with flowers, at the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888. Harlamoff was particularly skilful at painting faces. He used very soft and natural colours and paid great attention to delicately highlighting the cheeks and temples. His masterful portrayal of the eyes always draws the viewer directly in to the painting and emphasises the innocence and beauty of the sitter. Harlamoff sometimes used warm crimson colours to contrast with the pale skin tones. His paintings can be found in museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg and in important private collections all over the world. His father was an engineer in Worcester where Leader spent most of his childhood. He was educated at The Worcester Grammar School and then started a career in engineering, which he soon abandoned to study art at the Worcester School of Design. It was here that he learnt the basic skills of technical draughtsmanship. Leader derived his artistic ideas directly from nature and from his native countryside of Worcester. Scotland and Wales were also great sources of inspiration. In 1857 he changed his name from Benjamin Leader Williams (he was related to the Williams family of painters) to Benjamin Williams Leader. This also helped avoid confusion with the eleven other artists of the same surname who exhibited at the Royal Academy. His picture 'A Stream from the Hills’ was commended by Ruskin in 1857, and his work entitled 'Temptation' was purchased by the successful artist, Thomas Creswick, RA. In 1863 the Prime Minister W.E. Gladstone bought his painting of 'The Churchyard at Bettws-y-Coed', and as a result of this Leader was flooded with commissions. He spent a great deal of his time during these years painting in Wales. His work can be found in many important museums including the Victoria & Albert, the Tate, Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol. The artist’s best works were genre subjects which depicted the life of elegant ladies and gentlemen of the late 18th century. He was a superb draughtsman and he had a particular talent for painting the sumptuous fabrics and furniture of that period. Reggianini’s subject matter always suggests a story, usually of a romantic nature, but the detail is left to the imagination of the viewer. In this particularly beautiful example of the artist’s work we are left to wonder who is the subject of the lady’s gaze. He paints her hands and face with delicate precision and her satin gown is exquisitely executed. It is likely that the artist lived in Florence towards the end of the century as he exhibited there frequently. Florence was also home to a number of artists at this time who specialised in this genre, including Arturo Ricci (1854-1919) and Frederic Soulacroix (1858-1933). Florence was a popular destination for wealthy art collectors from Europe and the United States and Reggianini was a very successful artist during and after his lifetime. He established himself as an animal and genre painter, and his paintings are characterised by both their great attention to detail and their humorous content. Many of Frank Paton's paintings were subsequently engraved and amongst these engravings were a series of etchings surrounded by humorous vignettes, illustrating sporting or social preoccupations. Many of his animal portraits were also engraved. Paton was a family man, and was keen to teach his children to follow in his footsteps as an artist. His son painted still life and interior scenes. Frank Paton was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy, showing some twenty works between 1878 and 1890. He also exhibited four works at Suffolk Street. He was particularly interested in the effects of sunlight on his subjects and he frequently painted the highland lochs at sunset. Breanski was a meticulous painter who almost always recorded the exact location of his paintings with an inscription on the reverse of the canvas. The artist made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1872 and he continued to exhibit there until 1918. He also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Cambrian Academy. This painting is an example of Breanski’s best work; it incorporates all the ingredients which made the artist so popular. The artist exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1870 and he was awarded a medal in 1874. He won a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1890 and he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour the same year. Bourgeois patrons of the day were entranced by images of the luxury of the previous century and Kaemmerer specialised in painting highly finished genre subjects which catered for this taste for elegance and beauty. He was highly successful in his own lifetime painting fashionable figures enjoying pleasurable pastimes. In this very accomplished work Kaemmerer shows exquisite attention to detail and evokes a romantic atmosphere by depicting an elegant lady gliding through the snow on a gilded sleigh that is being pushed by her gallant suitor. Kaemmerer died in Paris in 1902. Clays spent several years working at sea before becoming an artist. On moving to Paris, to pursue his ambitions, he became a student of renowned marine artists Baron Gudin and Horace Vernet. Like many marine painters of his generation his style is heavily influenced by the masters of the 17th Century and his subjects often recall that period. However, his painting technique is much more fluid; his broad brush strokes and his warmth of colour evoke a real feeling of the sea and sky which gives the paintings movement and atmosphere. In 1867 Clays was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. He died on 10th February, 1900, in Brussels where he had resided for many years. His work can be found in various museums, including the National Gallery in London, the Metropolitan in New York and some in Antwerp and Brussels. His interest in art took him to London, and it is possible that he assisted Mr Frederick Leighton, later Lord Leighton, in his studio for a time. It was as Leighton's assistant that Emms came to the New Forest to help in the execution of the fresco "The Ten Virgins", in Lyndhurst Church. 1872 finds Emms back in the New Forest residing at Lyndhust. His ability to paint animals soon found him clients and as he was an accomplished horseman, his activities in the hunting field helped in finding subjects and customers for his work. Short trips to other parts of the country, brought him work painting horse, hound and dog portraits. Apart from a brief period in London when he got married, Emms lived in Lyndhurst from 1880 until he died in 1912. His early pictures were carefully painted and show the use of glazes but later he developed a direct and rapid style using a limited palette. Emms was able to portray animals, especially hounds, with a rare vivacity, reflecting perfectly their character and personality. His hunting scenes are among his best works, always lively, they show his knowledge of the subject acquired by experience in the hunting field. As a member of the Southampton Art Society he showed a number of his paintings at their annual exhibitions. Between 1864 and 1903 Emms exhibited 20 paintings at the Royal Academy and nearly 70 more at various London exhibitions. After graduating with distinction, he moved to Harrow Art School and completed the course, once again, with distinction. From here he was sent to Hornsey College of Art where he studied graphic design and commercial art graduating, as ever, with distinction (even though he was not particularly enamoured of this art form). Finally, he went to St. Martins School of Art where he studied under the celebrated Art Master Norman Jones. Meticulous attention to detail and his love of the garden were the two predominant forces which shaped his painting. Although he was a master of many media it is primarily for still life flower paintings that he became famous. This is ironic as he completed relatively few flower paintings in his life. He painted approximately one painting per month, which accounts for both the scarcity of his still life paintings and their quality. In the early part of his career he lived in Paris before settling in Sèvres where he lived until his death. Marais-Milton’s work mainly featured figure subjects and genre themes often incorporating Cardinals and other Clerical figures in situations which gently, yet poignantly point an ironical finger at their role and function in the church. The Bishops, Prelates and Cardinals in their vivid and wonderfully picturesque scarlet are often portrayed in recreational settings, passing time by enjoying a game or playing musical instruments and singing. However Marais-Milton did not offend with such subjects, indeed his humour is so subtle he went on to win several prizes with similar themes. He lived for many years at Dorking in Surrey and he painted the local views there and in neighbouring Sussex. He also made intermittent excursions to Yorkshire. By the end of the 19th century, as a consequence of the Industrial Revolution, a large and prosperous middle class had emerged in England. Many people had moved away from the country into the city to further their business interests and they wanted paintings which would remind them of their rural past. This created a huge demand for landscape paintings and Caffyn and his contemporaries produced many paintings to satisfy this market. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1876 and 1879 and also at Suffolk Street and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Caffyn painted using a fluid brush stroke and natural colours with touches of warm reds, yellows and browns. In his work he frequently incorporates an impressive panoramic view over distant landscape in the background whilst creating intimacy in the foreground with quite detailed foliage and flowers. These works are highly sought after and can be found in collections throughout the world. The artist’s extensive use of impasto creates an almost three dimensional effect in these works. His use of light is usually dramatic and his landscapes are very atmospheric. The artist died on 27th August, 1962. He showed a keen interest in art when he was very young and at the age of thirteen he attended the Academy of Design. Zampighi completed the course winning six first class medals in the examinations. At the age of twenty, Zampighi won a scholarship and spent three years in Rome. He was very successful in the yearly examinations and he was invited to become an Honourable Member of the Modena Academy. He spent the last year of his scholarship in Florence and he decided to settle there in 1884. It was here that Zampighi began to paint his well-known genre subjects. These were readily sold and he received many commissions from local dealers and from abroad. After executing a large painting that was exhibited in the hall of the Modena Academy the degree of Professor was conferred upon him by the Council of the Academy. Zampighi then devoted himself to figure painting, depicting scenes of the domestic life of his countrymen. These paintings are very pleasing compositions with lively colouring and are his best known works. Zampighi died in Maranello in 1944. The museum of Modern Art in Modena has examples of his works. He painted various subjects including landscapes, seascapes, wildlife and Parisian scenes. In 1903 he made his debut at the Salon de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts and he continued to exhibit there and at the Salon des Indépendants for many years. Between 1913 and 1914 he also exhibited in England at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at the Royal Scottish Academy. Although Marcel-Clément resided in Paris for virtually all his life, he only painted a relatively small number of views of his native city. The majority of his works are shipping subjects off the French coast and it is for these works that he is best known. His coastal views capture the dramatic atmosphere of light emanating from the sky and bouncing off the sea. His palette is natural and he uses varied greys and blues interspersed with whites and creams to evoke the silvery quality of both sky and sea. Using simplified forms and abstracted surfaces the sails of the boats are evoked with astonishing realism. The viewer is drawn into the scene as if he were actually there. Although he did not begin to paint for exhibition until he was 31, the desire to express himself through painting had occurred to him many years before. Clausade felt that, in addition to a thorough knowledge of his craft, he must experiment - following the example of his contemporaries Braque, Matisse and Picasso. After many years of trial and error he felt sufficiently confident to hold his first exhibition in Paris in 1943. The exhibition was a phenomenal success and as a result further shows were held during the following years in Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, New York and Jordan. Pierre de Clausade exhibited regularly at the Société des Beaux Arts and became a member of the Salon d’Hiver. Then his fame spread abroad and his paintings entered many distinguished collections, including that of the Brazilian Ambassador and the Boston and Minneapolis Museums of Fine Art. Despite this success Clausade continued to develop his technique, striving for perfection and the satisfaction of his analytical nature. Pierre de Clausade was awarded the great honour of the Medaille d'Argent by the jury of the Paris Salon in January 1953. He has held seven one-man exhibitions in London and his work is represented in many important private collections, both in Europe and America. He studied at the Joseph Wright Art School in Derby. By 1979 James was selling enough of his paintings to give up his job and become a professional artist. His interest in ships and the sea was growing and this took precedence over the wide variety of other subjects he had painted in the past. These marine works were strongly influenced by the great marine painters Thomas Somerscales and Montague Dawson. James sailed before the mast on the Sir Winston Churchill schooner belonging to the Sail Training Association in the 1990s. This was an exhilarating experience which provided him with much inspiration. Currently, nearly all James’ works are of marine subjects and they are often painted on a large scale in oil as he believes ‘the vast ocean is often best captured on a big canvas’. His largest commission to date has been a pair of canvases measuring 65 x 87 inches, each of Omani Dhows, which now hang in a fine palace. James has exhibited widely in England, including showing at the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London.
