Oktoberfest in Owosso
October 11, 2014
Oktoberfest makes its debut in Owosso
on Saturday, October 11th. A new event
organized by the Shiawassee Regional Chamber
of Commerce, Oktoberfest will take place in
a large tent (The Biergarten) at the corner
of Exchange and Water streets in Downtown
Owosso. Family events will continue on to Ball Street.
Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Jeff Deason stated, “The Shiawassee
Regional Chamber of Commerce created Oktoberfest to celebrate the spirit of
friendship and to honor Shiawassee County’s heritage and agricultural traditions.
With many community partners, we are planning a festive, fall celebration and invite
all residents to join in the fun!”
Family activities will start around noon and conclude at 4 p.m. There will be a
traditional bed race organized by The Kiwanis to raise funds for the Shiawassee
County Homeless Coalition. On Ball Street, there will be free Kazoo’s bounce houses
and children’s activities sponsored by LAFCU. Don’t forget the Downtown Owosso
Farmers Market will also take place on Exchange Street until 1 p.m. Food vendors
will be stationed near the big tent on west Exchange Street.
Oktoberfest welcomes Owosso Mayor Benjamin Frederick to perform a ceremonial
tapping of the keg at high noon. The Main Beverage Co. Biergarten will feature “Happy
Hour” from 3-5 p.m. with buy one, get one free admission. On tap will be Rochester
Mills Oktoberfest, Stella Artois and Bud Light, along with a selection of wines. There
will be polka lessons, Home Depot Hammerschlagen and the PowerHouse Gym beer
stein endurance contest all in the main event tent. Admission to the Biergarten is
restricted to 18 and over. Designated drivers will be provided free admission and a
special armband for complimentary nonalcoholic beverages.
At 5 p.m. live polka music will begin with the international touring and 12-time
Grammy nominee Lenny Gomulka and the Chicago Push Band from Massachusetts.
Polka music will alternate with the variety band One More Shot of the Frankenmuth/
Saginaw area. Both six-piece bands will play until 11 p.m.

About Lenny Gomulka and
Chicago Push
Lenny Gomulka formed a band named “Chicago
Push” and began public performances in January
1980. The bands creation was inspired by
Lenny’s heritage and has evolved into the most
progressive sound in polka music of the last
3 decades. Under the direction of Lenny Gomulka,
Chicago Push, since their inception, have continually received awards from various
radio stations across the country, booster clubs, promoters within the field, and
organizations such as the International Polka Association, United States Polka
Association and the United Polka Association. Performances throughout the years
have generated the granting of keys to many cities. Lenny Gomulka & Chicago
Push, noted for their unique arrangements and innovative musical techniques, have
mentored many aspiring bands and musicians.
Push Records...
The “Push” style of polka music is a term that was coined & trademarked by Lenny
Gomulka in January of 1980 when he formed his band named “Chicago Push.” Now,
34 years later, the “Push” style of polka music is well-known among young musicians
and polka audiences everywhere. Lenny Gomulka has led his band the Chicago
Push in travels throughout the U.S. and abroad. In recognition of his music, he has
received a multitude of Grammy Award nominations, Polka Music Awards, Keys to
City’s and he has even earned an Induction into the International Polka Music Hall
of Fame. “Push Records” is the vehicle by which Lenny Gomulka markets his music.
And his music is both traditional, appealing to the more mature fan as well as
innovative, appealing to the young polka fan. It’s polka music, “Chicago Push” style
and it’s all about keeping polka music alive. Lenny Gomulka delivers Chicago Push
style music with the ultimate polka fan in mind.

Are you ready for some Hammerschlagen?
Hammerschlagen (the “Striking Hammer” or “Hammer-Striking”) is a brand of the
German game Nagelspielen (the “Nail Game” or “Playing With Nails”). Nagelspielen
reportedly dates to the first Oktoberfest in 1810.
There are many variations of the game, but the rules for Oktoberfest in Owosso will
be simple: The object is to be the first one to pound in one’s own nail. To win, the
head of the nail must be flush or under the surface of the wood.

BED RACES
The Shiawassee Homeless Coalition is
coordinating the Oktoberfest Bed Race.
The race will take place in downtown Owosso
on Saturday, October 11, 2014. All monies
raised will go toward emergency housing in
Shiawassee County. There is still time to sign
up! Contact Penny Corbin at 989-723-0755
to enter the contest.
In conjunction with the Oktoberfest, two
local youth groups will participate in a Youth Homeless for a Night event to bring
awareness and raise money for those who do not have a home. Participants from
Grace Bible in Owosso and First Congregational Church of Laingsburg, Pilgrim
Fellowship have activities planned throughout the evening including hosting a
spaghetti dinner at First Congregational Church of Laingsburg located at 401 East
Grand River from 5 – 7 p.m.
The Bed Race and Youth Homeless for a Night are only a few of the many events
the coalition has sponsored to bring awareness and to raise money to help those in
immediate need. An anonymous donor will provide up to $12,500 (matching funds)
for emergency housing in Shiawassee County. If you would like to join in the effort
to help those who are without a home, please send your generous donation to:

Food, Food and More Food
At Oktoberfest
Can you smell the grilled bratwurst and sauerkraut?
How about a bite of a warm, hand-rolled pretzel?
Sausage soup anyone? All of these options and more
will be featured at Oktoberfest!
Right on Exchange Street, near the Biergarten tent,
will be fresh pretzels from Lance’s Bakery; grilled bratwurst from the Kiwanis Club;
Koegel hot dogs from Billy’s Hot Dogs & Coney Dogs; pulled pork sandwiches and
sausage soup from Jumbo’s Burger Bar; Frazee’s French Fries – a local favorite; and
crème horns from Town to Town Pastries. Local restaurants in the Downtown Owosso
area will also be open for sit-down style meals.
“Masskrugstemmen” or
Beer Stein Holding Contest
The event originated in Germany and
Masskrugstemmen in English can be translated
into “beer-stein holding.” This Bavarian tradition/
sport is very popular in Europe and is gaining
momentum in the U.S. where a National Champion
is crowned each year in New York’s Central Park during the month of October. The
event is done by holding a liter of beer in a large mug extended out in front of you in
one arm parallel to the ground. It is held there until the arm is no longer parallel to
the ground or until any of the beer is spilled, both will get you disqualified and out of
the competition. The winner is the person whose arm is outstretched the longest.
Sound easy? The mug filled weighs about 5 pounds and most first-timers last only a
few minutes. The world record is 19 minutes. PowerHouse Gym of Owosso will be
coordinating the competition that will be held at 8 p.m. in the Biergarten.

Curwood Castle stands on the banks of the
Shiawassee River near the home of James
Oliver Curwood, one of America’s foremost
authors of adventure novels and an early
advocate of environmental conservation.
This replica of a Norman chateau was
built in 1922 and served as James Oliver
Curwood’s writing studio. Curwood Castle
was used by Curwood until his death in
1927. The castle is open to the public
February-December, Tuesday-Sunday,
1-5pm. Curwood Castle is available
for group tours and special event rental.

The DeVries Historic Carriage and Sleigh
Museum boasts one of the finest collections
of carriages, buggies, surreys, sleighs
and cutters in the Midwest. The collection
consists of over 27 vehicles. Owosso’s
manufacturing past is well represented by
buggies and sleighs built in the early 1900’s
by the Owosso Carriage & Sleigh Company.

The Durand Union Station recaptures the
golden years of railroading. The Michigan
Railroad History Museum features photos,
artifacts, displays and articles of Durand’s
rich railroad history. See displays from the
Ann Arbor History Society and the Grand
Trunk Western Historical Society. For a
firsthand look at railroading of yesterday,
Durand Union Station is an interesting
educational place to visit. The Depot has
also gained prominence as one of the most
photographed train stations in America.

Shiawassee County boasts wonderful
Farmers Markets that are a treat for the
whole family. From May through October,
markets operate in Bennington (Monday),
Durand (Wednesday), Vernon (Thursday),

1929 as a single grass strip with one hanger.
Today, it has three landing strips surrounded
by spacious hangers and a community that
has grown up around it. Business people fly
in, small jets and helicopters land and flying

Steam Railroading Institute (SRI)

The SRI’s mission is to preserve the
knowledge, skills and technology involved
with the maintenance and operation of
steam locomotives and to educate the
public about the enormous impact that these
machines had in economic development
of Owosso, Michigan and the Great Lakes
Region. The institute is home to the majestic
Pere Marquette 1225, the largest operating
steam locomotive of its kind. The 1225
embodies the characteristics of the last
and most powerful steam locomotives. The
Steam Railroading Institute offers weekend
excursions throughout the summer and
several all day excursions throughout the
year. The most popular of all excursions is
the “North Pole Express,” available during
November and December.

SHIAWASSEE REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EVENTS
The Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner and Awards Night honors
community award recipients during a formal evening. Awards presented include the ATHENA Award;
Outstanding Small, Medium and Large Business; The Citizen of The Year Award; Mission Award and
The Ambassador Rising Star Award. Scheduled for January 29, 2015.
The Annual Home Garden Business EXPO is an opportunity for SRCC Members to promote their
business to thousands of area residents. Over 150 businesses and non-profit organizations participate
in the show. The EXPO is a Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce event that is sponsored by
the Shiawassee Home Builders Association and LAFCU. Scheduled for March 14-15, 2015.
The Chamber Golf Classic is one of the largest golf outings in Shiawassee County. It is an all-day
event with lunch, 18 holes of golf, awards dinner and great fun. The outing is played at the beautiful
Owosso Country Club, located just north of Owosso. The Chamber Golf Classic is sponsored by
Physicians Health Plan. Scheduled for September 8, 2015.
Monthly Member Breakfasts
Chamber AM is held the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7:15 a.m. at the Owosso Big Boy.
This monthly membership breakfast is known for its networking value and community information
updates. A very popular event with SRCC members! The underwriting sponsor is the Owosso Big Boy.
Networking@Noon
These monthly networking events are held at various restaurants throughout Shiawassee County.
The event is held the last Tuesday of every month with no lunch in December. A complete schedule
with restaurant locations is available on the SRCC website. The underwriting sponsor is Oliver Woods
Retirement Village.
Volunteer
A great way to promote your business is to lend us a hand by volunteering at SRCC Events. The Home
Garden Business EXPO, Chamber Golf Classic and Annual Dinner & Awards Night are all supported by
volunteers. The SRCC is always looking for new ambassadors and committee members as well.
NEW in 2014: OKTOBERFEST!
A new event created and hosted by the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the
fall harvest in Shiawassee County! Who doesn’t love great food, fun friends and a live, toe-tapping
band? Oktoberfest will be held on October 11th, under a big tent in downtown Owosso and will feature
the world-touring Lenny Gomulka and the Chicago Push polka band. A second polka band called One
More Shot is also expected to perform. Family fun activities will take place in the afternoon. The big tent
will be “18 and over” when the polka music begins. This new festival is sure to be a good time for all!
About the Chicago Push: Lenny Gomulka formed a band named “Chicago Push” and began public
performances in January 1980. The bands creation was inspired by Lenny’s heritage and has evolved
into the most progressive sound in polka music of the last 3 decades. Under the direction of Lenny
Gomulka, Chicago Push, since their inception, have continually received awards from various radio
stations across the country, booster clubs, promoters within the field, and organizations such as the
International Polka Association, United States Polka Association and the United Polka Association.
Performances throughout the years have generated the granting of keys to many city’s. Lenny Gomulka
& Chicago Push, noted for their unique arrangements and innovative musical techniques, have
mentored many aspiring bands and musicians.
The “Push” style of polka music is a term which was coined & trademarked by Lenny Gomulka in
January of 1980 when he formed his band named “Chicago Push.” Now, 34 years later, the “Push” style
of polka music is well-known among young musicians and polka audiences everywhere. Lenny Gomulka
has led his band the Chicago Push in travels throughout the U.S. and abroad. In recognition of his music
he has received a multitude of Grammy Award nominations, Polka Music Awards, Keys to City’s and
he has even earned an Induction into the International Polka Music Hall of Fame. “Push Records” is
the vehicle by which Lenny Gomulka markets his music. And his music is both traditional, appealing to
the more mature fan as well as innovative, appealing to the young polka fan. It’s polka music, “Chicago
Push” style and it’s all about keeping polka music alive. Lenny Gomulka delivers Chicago Push style
music with the ultimate polka fan in mind.

THE SHIAWASSEE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP
The Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership has launched its bold and innovative
economic development initiative, Growing Hometown Futures. This program is hoping to
help current and former Shiawassee County residents rediscover their hometowns, and
ultimately bring their families and businesses back home.
The Growing Hometown Futures is a highly web driven campaign featuring a website,
www.growinghometownfutures.org. Here, current and former residents alike can find out
more about quality of life and the business climate in Shiawassee County.
To compliment online marketing efforts, a Facebook page has been created, www.facebook.
