Experience the use of 3D motion capture technology, the most
advanced technology in bike fitting. A bike fit is best measured
during dynamic pedaling action, as static measurements tell
the fitter very little about how your body reacts and interacts in
biochemical motion. An observer watching a cyclist while pedaling
cannot simultaneously measure lateral, vertical and horizontal
movement. The retul system reads the body in 3D motion,
eliminating the guesswork from the fitting process. The result is that
you will have a truly tailored fit to your bike, maximising efficiency
and performance while avoiding discomfort and injury. Whether
you are an advanced rider or you enjoy your daily commute. Retul
has been chosen by world class athletes from RadioShack, Sky
and Garmin professional cycling teams. Your bike fit experience
dosen’t end with a lot of usless numbers, The Shed fitters will setup
your bike precisly, Retul fitters are also available to consult on your
purchase of a new bike which can also be fitted perfectly to you.

Filed A SuCCeSSFul pAtent ClAim For improvementS to perCuSSion piStolS produCed by thiS Firm.
Stevens received a patent for a tip-up pistol
design during the same year in which he, along
with financial backers W. B. Fay and James Taylor,
founded the company that bore his name. Although
a producer of firearms, J. Stevens and Company's
primary source of income was derived through
the manufacture and sale of machine tools. The
company's early years were lean ones, with
production carried out in a former Chicopee Falls
grist mill by fewer than 60 employees. J. Stevens and
Co. underwent an expansion in 1880, and in 1886,
the firm changed its name to J. Stevens Arms & Tool.
In 1880 the company began making a line of
falling block rifles which though less well known
than Ballard or Winchester firearms, were of
comparable quality. They were priced lower
than those of Ballard or Winchester, making the
Stevens' falling block models competitive in the
marketplace. Under names like Favorite, Little
Scout, Crack Shot, and Marksman, Stevens sold
millions of reliable single-shot rifles. The total
number of single-shot firearms manufactured by
the company exceeded 3.5 million by 1892.
Stevens and Taylor was bought out in 1896 by I.H.
Page, who was one of the new partners and the
book keeper. Page led the company to significant
growth, such that by 1902 Stevens had 900
employees and was considered one of the top
sporting firearms manufacturers in the world. In
1915, Stevens led the U.S. arms business in target
and small game guns. Stevens military productions
and offerings were generally limited to prototypes
in an attempt to garner military contracts.
In addition, in 1887, Stevens developed the .22 LR
round, which served as an introductory calibre for
children for decades, as well as being very popular
for plinking and varmint and target shooting. The
.22LR cartridge was available beginning in 1888,
in the #1, #2, #9, and #10 break-top rifles, and
in their New Model Pocket and Bicycle rifles. The
.22 LR would outperform other Stevens rounds,
such as the .25 Stevens and .25 Stevens Short
which were offered in models like the lever action
single-shot Favorite and the Crack Shot #15.
spur trigger tip-up single-shot pistols, tip-up
rifles, and "pocket rifles" gave way to offhand
target pistols and the highly-regarded Ideal rifle.
These lever-action single-shot falling block rifles
were available in a variety of chamberings ranging
from .22 rimfire to .44-40 calibre. Options included
both round and half-round/half octagonal blued
barrels; case hardened actions; deluxe- and selectgrade walnut butt stocks and fore ends; shotgun,
crescent, and Schutzen-style butts available with or
without a cheek piece and/or pistol grip; double-set
triggers; palm rest; Globe interchangeable front
sight; and Vernier tang rear peep sight. The singleshot Ideal "Walnut Hill" No. 49 rifle represented the
pinnacle of Stevens Arms products.
new Century, new
devlopmentS
Shortly after the turn of the new century the firm,
which now employed over 900 workers in a 270,000
square-feet manufacturing plant, purchased
the Cataract Tool & Optical Company of Buffalo,
New York. After relocating this new acquisition to
Chicopee Falls, Stevens began to produce its own line
of telescopic rifle and pistol sights. Stevens scopes
included integral eyepieces and crosshairs that were
sealed in solid dust- and moisture-proof brass tubes.
This concept marked a major advance in optical
sights, as previous designs employed a separate
eyepiece that was fastened to the scope tube with
several screws. Stevens scopes also required no
focus adjustment, unlike the products of competing
firms. Optical sights continued to be a part of the
Stevens line until the First World War, when the
company sold its interests to Lyman Gun Sight
Company of Middlefield, Connecticut.
In addition to its deluxe features, Walnut Hill rifles
also established a reputation for accuracy, and this
combination ensured the success of this design for
over fifty years. Original models sometimes sell for
several thousand dollars. Between 1901 and 1903,
Stevens rifles were available with special eightgroove barrels produced under the supervision of
master barrel maker Harry M. Pope.
The Favorite was sold in both Boys' and Ladies'
Models. The Sure Shot, Crack Shot, Little Scout,
Marksman, and Junior rifles represented lessexpensive entries in the Stevens product line, and the
company also produced both pump and lever-action
repeating rifles, and even shotguns. During the First
World War, the firm's manufacturing facilities were
turned over to New England Westinghouse Company
for production of Moisin Nagant bolt-action rifles for
the Imperial Russian government.
As Stevens Arms and Tool Co. continued its
phenomenal growth, firearms replaced machine
tools as a revenue source. By 1915, Stevens Arms
was a leading manufacturer of smallbore target
and hunting arms. The firm established offices
in both New York and London, as well as on the
European continent, in Australia, the Caribbean,
and Latin America. The original Stevens line of
Although the firm once again underwent
reorganization during this period, the Stevens
factory remained under the control of New
England Westinghouse for the remainder of
the war, and that company's Moisin Nagant
contract represented the only period in J.
Stevens corporate history that military arms
were produced in the Chicopee Falls plant. In
1920, J. Stevens Arms Co. became a whollyowned subsidiary of Savage Arms Corporation
when it was acquired by the Utica arms maker.
Under Savage ownership, the Stevens line grew
to include bolt-action long arms. Parent company
Savage relocated its operations from Utica, New
York to Westfield, Massachusetts in 1960, at which
time the Stevens Arms factory in Chicopee Falls
closed. For a long period, the Stevens name was all
that remained of the New England firm, however,
this situation changed in 1999, when Savage Arms
once again began to produce the Stevens Favorite
Rifle under the designation Model 30G.
The particular rifle featured in the photographs is
the less-expensive Model 12 Marksman, 1915 Version
and would have served man and boy alike. The tip up
design is operated by the snake like under lever and
cam that simply allows the barrel to tip forward in
order that a single .22LR round can be thumbed into
the breech. The same opening action also operates
the extractor, lifting a spent case clear of the
chamber. A large thumbscrew is located to the rear
of the for-end, which once undone allows the barrel
and for-end to be separated from the receiver and
the stock for convenience or storage.
Shooting this little rifle is a simple affair, with one
just fully cocking the hammer and squeezing off the
shot using the basic dovetail mounted iron sights.
The rifle is compact to say the least, displaying its
design and heritage as a youth or plinking rifle, but
is surprisingly comfortable and pleasant to shoot.
With a trigger breaking at around 5lbs accuracy was
quite respectable with a 2” group obtained on the
iron sights at 25m unsupported.
There is a simple and understated pleasure to be
had from rifles such as these, for they seem to
hark back to a more relaxed era where a boy was
encouraged to learn to shoot and where a rifle
such as the little Stevens Marksman 12 could have
been the starting point for the following lifetime
fascination that infects so many shooters.

For the Dressing just use an old jam jar as a
shaker, nothing fancy required!
Pour in the olive oil and the balsamic or cider
vinegar. Add the mustard, salt, pepper, and
sugar and then just give it a good shake up!
Start the barby on a medium heat if gas, or at
the highest height setting for charcoal
Pop your bird on the grill and leave to heat
slowly and evenly, turning regularly
At the time of writing there is Absolutely no doubt thAt summer is fully with us; the sun is
shining, the sky is blue, And it’s time for short sleeves on the rAnge And out in the woods.
For me there is something very special about
Summer shooting; as you’ll have gathered I’ve
done a lot of my shooting abroad in hot weather
environments, so when the weather is good here
it always reminds me of friends and adventures
in other countries, and the days of shooting we’ve
enjoyed together.
Inevitably at the end of a range day it was always a
case of breaking out the barbeque and we’d vie to
create the tastiest recipe for outdoor grilling. Whether
it was fish, fowl, beast, or even fruit and vegetables
we’d have a go at grilling it and making it tasty.
Even now that we’re fully settled back in the UK
there is never a barbeque far away; there’s a gas
version on the patio for regular use, and the Hibachi
accompanies us on outdoor and camping trips. Many
purists may scoff at the gas version, but the fact of
the matter is that it’s always ready to go instantly,
a real benefit given the vagaries of British weather;
we’ve even had Christmas dinner from the grill!
054 .22 SEPTEMBER 2013
One of my favourite recipes is also one of the
simplest to prepare in terms of both ingredients and
cooking. We grow most of our own vegetables, fruit,
and salad leaves, and at this time of the year the
salad crop is really flourishing in the warm weather.
It’s just a case of picking it fresh and adding some
dressing, prepared with either balsamic or cider
vinegar; each give a really distinctive flavour which
enhances any salad dish no end.
The other main ingredient is chicken, although this
dish works just as well with other games birds, or
even rabbit. The key to it though in relation to the
barbeque is getting a spatchcock bird or beast.
Using the definition that you’ll find easily online;
“A spatchcock, otherwise known as "spattlecock",
is poultry or game that has been prepared for
roasting or grilling by removing the backbone, and
sometimes the sternum of the bird and flattening
it out before cooking. The preparation of a bird
in such a manner for cooking may also be known
as butterflying the bird. The term "spatchcock"
is used when the backbone is removed, whether
or not the sternum is removed. Removing the
sternum allows the bird to be flattened more fully.
"Spatchcock" is also the traditional word for a
juvenile chicken (in French, a "poussin"). Poussins or
Spatchcocks were generally butterflied in preparation
for faster cooking, hence in modern English the word
has come to refer to both the bird and the manner in
which it was traditionally prepared.”
Don’t be dismayed though, as you’ll find ready
prepared birds in this style easily available from
most good supermarkets, or if not, you can ask
your friendly game butcher to prepare it for you.
Adding the hot meat to your leaves gives a quick and
beautiful tasting warm salad, which is just perfect
for a lazy Summer evening. Add glass of cider or
beer, a good roll with some real butter and you’re
pretty much set to feed two very well indeed!
When the beast is cooked through thoroughly
and starting to turn golden add your
mushrooms and courgette to the hotplate. If
you’re using a charcoal barby you can cook
these on a skewer
Remove the bird and the mushroom & courgette
from the heat; cut or tear up the bird, & put
everything together, tossing the whole salad well
SE
Rv
E!
SUMMER SIZZLER!
Tear up your salad leaves, then combine these
in a bowl with the herbs, chickpeas, tomato, &
pour on your dressing. Leave to rest
As you do this pop your rolls on to toast,
pour yourself a drink…
