Los Guaduales - Trek International Safaris
International Safaris The Leaders in Sportsman’s Travel since 1973 ~Fall 2014~ Nicaragua Teal New Couples Trip New Lodge in Bolivia “Los Guaduales” -1- The New Trek Safaris Website As with any business, the need for adaptation to the ever-changing world is crucial for its success. This summer and fall have been a very busy time in the Trek office. We are launching a brand new website along with a new software system to integrate everyone, while keeping both Trek and you, the traveler, better connected. So what does all that talk translate to? Trek has always done business with the mentality that whatever is best for our clients is we will do. So, we had you in mind while developing the website. Nothing gets our blood boiling more than going to a website to find information, pricing or policies from 2012! In this day and time, that is just unacceptable. This new site was designed from the ground up, taking ideas from members of the staff as well as our new whiz-kid site designer Riley Bouchard. You will find excellent new photo galleries, brochures, and sample itineraries at the click of a mouse or swipe of your mobile device. Moving ahead, we have implemented social media, as well as updating our Trek journals and new blog area for the latest in travel news. All of these improvements will give you greater knowledge of your upcoming trip, so you can be a relaxed and prepared traveler. We invite you to visit our new site at www.treksafaris.com and have a look around at some of the new features. ABOUT THE COVER: Our cover shot this month is of Eric Hahnfeld and Hamilton Hunt drawing a bead on a group of decoying ducks as they approach a rice field near Malalcue Lodge. For over 25 years, Trek customers have been traveling to Malalcue for the finest mixed bagged hunt anywhere in the world. This photo was taken by the one and only Marcos Furer. For more incredible shots like this, please view his work on line at http://www.marcosfurer.com 2 HIGHLIGHTS: Nicaragua Teal pg. 7 New Couples Trip pg. 8 Los Guaduales Pg. 9 T r e k Tracks Well I can certainly tell when it is fall in here, trying to get guys out of their football seats, deer stands and decoy spreads to return our calls is like telling your ex-wife the alimony check’s in the mail! Yeah right, and the Secret Service has Obama’s back too!! Seriously, how can an armed man walk into the White House? Damn scary if you ask me. I am pretty sure there is some sort of protocol about anyone jumping over the fence on White House grounds, let alone wandering around the halls. Perhaps he was able to give folks some direction on foreign policies. I hope one of the many reasons you travel with Trek is that we cover all the details in preparing you for your upcoming trip, in most cases this requires forms to be filled out, passports scanned and flights confirmed. No one is more diligent than Trek in this regard, but we recognize some of the information required is time sensitive and it calls for you to gather and send, for us to receive and process. In some cases the information requested is redundant so this is an area we are currently addressing. We have already ushered in new Mac systems and vetting several software companies to implement new programming that will allow for more automation and increased data storage, ultimately requiring less information needed from you. As my bestest buddy Forrest Gump would say, “one less thing, you know”!! In the coming months we will be sending some information to you to that will allow us to build your profile, store it and use when necessary for your trips abroad. As an example we’ll know what foods you may be allergic to, whether you wish to have aisle or window seats, what shotguns you prefer to take and their serial numbers. We’ll also find out if you want correspondence to be mailed to you or just sent electronically and much more. Of course any information entrusted to us is will be kept strictly confidential as it has for the last 41 years, but we are excited about requiring less of your time and more of what we can offer to make you experience here a little better. Perhaps you have noticed we upgraded our stationary recently, offering a more professional travel-conscious look. Hey, it’s all about image right? I mean it worked out okay for Andre Agassi. We are also now in the process of restructuring all of our travel planners to a more contemporary formatting template that will be easy to read and even easier to e-mail. Folks, it’s a digital world out there and getting more so by the day, however I give you my word that you will still get a paper copy and a stamp as long as you want it. Many of the changes we have implemented came from the suggestions and comments you all completed in your surveys from our Welcome Home letters, just completely overwhelmed by the responses we have received from everyone. Trek and our network of outfitters and lodges are so very fortunate to have clients who thought enough about what we are doing to tell us about their experiences. Overwhelmingly your responses have been positive and encouraging, which re-enforces our belief that we are doing the right things. Some of your comments have also been downright humbling and has opened our eyes as well as those we represent. If any business is not willing to listen to those who pay the bills, eventually they will cease to exist in my view. Or go bankrupt and re-invent themselves a la Continental, AA, and Delta Airlines as well as GM. At least they were willing to listen and learn from some their mistakes. On another note, I want to weigh in on the latest news regarding obtaining gun permits to enter Argentina. You may have heard some noise in the system that starting in 2015 you will be required to visit your jurisdictional Argentine consulate in person to fill out paperwork in order to take your guns. We along with other agencies, outfitters and lodges lobbied hard against any notion requiring someone to take time away from their business, incur the extra expenses of travel, just to obtain a permit for their shotgun. Thankfully the government listened to our steadfast resolve on this matter and they have rescinded the mandatory visit to the consulate. Instead, the government will be requiring you to complete a consular digital form that will need to be notarized and sealed along with your Renar forms used currently. -3- Rather than completely confuse you further, let’s just say for now that a consulate form has yet to be presented to anyone and there is some reasonable doubt that none of this will even be enforced in Argentina. Let me get this straight El Presidente, you telling me that the Argentine government is asking for us to fill out a consulate form for no apparent reason, get it all documented and sealed to present to officials in Argentina who may or may not ask for it? Sadly this is the case, but instead of giving you weekly updates we’ll let you know more as soon as we receive definite instructions from the Argentine government. Stay tuned. Finally, you will see some nice couples/ family trips planned for 2015 in this recent issue. Currently there are trips to Belize, Argentina, New Zealand and Spain and we will most likely add a trip to Alaska and Africa in August. These trips are very well received as we plan some fun things other than just the hunting and fishing. Cara and I have hosted a number of these trips the last 35 plus years and have enjoyed them as much as our clients. Truly fortunate to have the opportunity to visit so many incredible destinations with so many wonderful friends and clients, we look forward to our next journey and hope you will join us. Milton Hanburry, Jr. President. Argentina - Cordoba 30°55’27.06” S 64°11’00.81” W This is one Croc that’s not a Crock!! There are dove hunting locations and then there is Cordoba. Trek Safaris and H&H Outfitters have been the leaders in dove hunting in Cordoba for over 20 years, offering the most birds, the nicest lodges and the best organized hunts available. Dove hunting in the Cordoba region of Argentina is getting better every year. Trek Safaris and H&H outfitters have been leading the pack for over 20 years, providing the best dove hunting available. For the 2015 season, we will be offering three deluxe lodges, La Portenita, Rio Seco and Sierra Verde Lodges for your shooting experience. The Trip: This is a seven day, six night trip that offers you three full and two half days of high volume shooting or a new two full and two half days option. You trip begins on an overnight flight from the US, arriving into Cordoba the following day. Upon your arrival into Cordoba, the staff of H&H Outfitters will assist you with your gun clearance and transfer you to your corresponding lodge. After introductions and lunch, we will head out for an afternoon hunt. We will shoot until late afternoon, and then return to the lodge for a hot shower and a drink before dinner. The next three days are full hunting days with asados (local barbecue) in the fields each day. On the last day, you will go on a morning hunt and settle up before saying your goodbyes, followed by a transfer to your return afternoon flight that will connect you to an overnight flight home to the US. The Shooting: Cordoba is the dove capital of the world, with the estimated dove population to be in the neighborhood of 32 million birds. With huge tracts of agriculture and few known predators, the dove population has exploded and continues to do so. The South American eared dove is similar in size and appearance to the North American mourning dove, except the eared dove has a shorter tail. But the chief difference between the two is the eared dove’s pattern of flying the entire day, which allows us to hunt all day even in inclement weather. This is a shotgunner’s dream, and it is not uncommon to shoot 3-4 cases of shells per day and more. A typical hunting days starts with a wake up call around 7:00 am. After a full breakfast, we will load into the vans for the 30-60 minute drive to the field. Your pick-up boy will meet you in the pre-scouted field with plenty of shells and a cooler of cold drinks. Shooting should be steady until lunch, where a full asado is served consisting of local cuts of beef, chicken and pork, accompanied by excellent salads, fresh baked breads and fine wines. After lunch, we will continue to shoot until late afternoon when the sun starts to set and then make our way back to the lodge for cocktails and appetizers followed by a full dinner and wines. The Accommodations: Trek has exclusive rights to three, newly renovated, deluxe lodges each having their own distinctive characteristics, design and location. The one thing all our lodges have in common is that they offer the very best -4- staffing, service, equipment and cuisine available in Argentina. Trek and H&H will continue to feature La Portenita, Sierra Verde and Rio Seco Lodges. Please inquire about a brochure and individual listings for the each of the lodges. TRIP FEE: 4 day hunt: $2,895.00 per person based on double occupancy. 3 day hunt: $2,395. Father/Son Special: Father regular price and son $1,275.00 and $1,275.00 for the four day and three day respectively. DESCRIPTION: Includes three or four days shooting with room, meals, wines, licenses, permits and transfers. A $1,000.00 non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your reservation. Pricing is subject to change and excludes any fuel surcharges. Estancia Cortaderas Argentina Ariel Semenov has cultivated a reputation of being one of the best outfitters in the business over the last twenty-five years, and almost all of these with Trek. A great hunting or fishing trip is much more than just pulling the trigger or setting a hook. It must be about the total experience. Estancia Cortaderas offers exactly this, sitting on 60 acres above the Parana River about an hour north of Parana in the small town of Hernandarias. The lodge features deluxe accommodations with WiFi, satellite TV, and ten single air conditioned rooms with outdoor balconies offering incredible views of the river. On this program, we offer a complete mixed bag with traditional duck hunts, upland perdiz hunts and high volume dove hunts over four days. Transitioning into the warmer months of September-April, we are now offering a fabulous four day cast & blast program where you fish the beautiful Parana River in the mornings for the aggressive Golden Dorado and shoot high volume dove in the afternoons. Exciting packages to Cortaderas from $2,995-$4,670. Guayascate Lodge Argentina With 18,000 square feet of pure luxury, Guayascate provides ten expertly appointed rooms, and also features a beautiful design using contemporary patterns of leather, tapestries, and local artifacts. For those who want to relax after a full day of shooting, you can enjoy a massage in the full spa, take a dip in the infinity swimming pool, kick back in one of the two Jacuzzis, or enjoy a wine tasting in the lodge’s own cellar. During your hunt, you will be treated to many culinary delights prepared by the fully trained chef, whose expertise includes both local and international cuisine. Hunting is what you would expect in the Cordoba Province, with opportunities to shoot over a thousand birds in a day while only travelling fifteen minutes from the lodge. Our longtime partners in Cordoba, H&H Outfitters, are the brains behind Guayascate and everyone will experience H&H’s unmatched service while hunting at Guayascate. Threeday hunts start at $3,475/shooter while the four-day hunt starts at $4,270/shooter not including airfare. Buenos Aires Ducks Argentina For the duck hunter who likes to keep things traditional, Trek’s Buenos Aires Province duck hunt is exactly that. Decoying ducks will be called into a well-placed spread. The difference in shooting ducks in Argentina is that you can easily fill a bag with eleven different species from southern wigeon to the large rosy billed pochard. Brothers Cano and Cane St. Antonin are proven outfitters, and they will be your host on this wonderful hunt, while providing exceptional service. We have two lodge options including Monte Laguna Lodge, which is outside of the small town of Casares, featuring six bedrooms and spacious living room giving off a quaint lodge feel. Near Lincoln, we will use the stately Estacia San Juan, a turn of the century hotel with seven rooms. Both lodges feature short drives to the hunting grounds, along with trained chefs to keep you happy. Each is located about three hours outside of Buenos Aires. Trips start at $3,995/hunter, not including airfare and season runs May through July. -5- Malalcue Changes on the Way For generations, the province of Corrientes has provided generations of local and international guests some of the finest Dorado fishing and wingshooting in the world. It is here along the banks of the Corrientes River where Trek Safaris first visited this region in the mid 1980’s using a country estate called Malalcue. Word of its proximity to legendary mixed bagged hunting soon spread and since those early days we have hosted thousands of hunters within its confines. Outfitter Ariel Semenov has been involved with operating the hunts since Day 1 and eventually bought Malalcue in 1993. He was directly responsible for developing long lasting relationships with land owners and farmers near the town of Esquina, giving him a vast inventory of hunting farmlands involving game species like ducks, doves, pigeons and perdiz. Malalcue became the premier mixed bagged hunt in all of Argentina, and that continues to this day. No one can match Malalcue’s consistency and organization for hunting all four species. For the 2015 season, we will have some exciting new changes to announce, starting with renovations to the lodge that will include adding a spa and massage rooms, bathroom overhauls, and a redesign of the porch and foyer areas. In addition to this, (and time permitting), some bedrooms will be re-designed and new beds ordered, as well a fire pit built for the comfort of those who love a good outdoor fire. Along with these cosmetic changes, we are also tweaking the hunting program a bit, which will now feature more of the pigeon shooting that has been so fantastic these last few years. The hunts will now include two full days of pigeons hunting, a full day of duck shooting, a full day of perdiz hunting and a full day of doves. This may change, of course, depending on the game concentration, but the idea is to de-emphasize the dove shooting and focus more on the pigeons that most everyone prefers. Keep in mind this isn’t dropping you off in a feedlot; this is a live decoying pigeon shoot that rivals any with many hunters shooting 500 rounds or more a day. The perdiz hunting is also something that many repeaters really enjoy, as Malalcue has always offered some of the best in Argentina. These wild “tinamou” are very sporting and shot over German Shorthairs and Brittany Spaniels, but most everyone gets their limit and enjoys them as appetizers for dinner, as their breast meat is some of the most tender of all gamefowl. Duck hunting is still very consistent at Malalcue, and we’ll continue to hunt the nearby freshwater lagoons for teal, Rosey-Billed Pochards, treed ducks and pintails. Generous limits are still in place and we expect a super outlook for 2015. Dove shooting in Malalcue, like all of Argentina, is high volume and fast paced. We can provide the finest in rental guns both in automatic and fixed breech. Call Trek today and design your own favorite mixed bag hunt to Malalcue. We are listening to you, our clients, and making the changes you have requested. The season is May-September. -6- Nicaragua 12°36’21.47” N 87°07’49.45” W What can be better than a Teal Hunt in Shorts? Barely two hours from Miami is some of best teal hunting in the world. Very few spots remain for 2014. The Hunting: Imagine sitting comfortably in a lush, tropical lagoon as the Papagayo winds are gently tugging at your back, when a flock of teal come zipping into your decoys against the back drop of a smoking volcano. This scene occurs every day from October-March in Nicaragua, home to one the largest concentrations of wintering blue winged teal in Central America. Literally thousands and thousands of these fast flying ducks call Nicaragua home through mid March or as long as the water holds. One of the rewards of being the leader in providing quality hunting and fishing opportunities to our clients is discovering new programs to spark excitement. While Cordoba is the preferred destination for most wing shooters traveling to Argentina, there is a hidden gem just to the west in the San Luis Province. That gem is pigeons, and during the months from April to September, they inhabit the area near the small town of La Juan by the thousands. Rewind to the early 2000s when a passionate Ramiro de las Carreras was beating the highways around Argentina to find the perfect location for the home base of his outfitting service. He discovered San Luis’ growing agriculture scene being devastated by what farmers in Argentina considered pests: Doves and Pigeons. After convincing the Government of San Luis to issue him an outfitting license to control these “pests” he started South Pioneers Outfitters. In the years since, Ramiro has brought a work ethic and approach like no other, having created one of the best hunting programs being offered in all of Argentina. It seems nowadays more and more shooters are looking for high volume pigeon hunting on a consistent basis, and South Pioneers certainly provides this along with hot barreled dove shooting to satisfy anyone looking for a wonderful combination hunt. You will see a mixture of both pigeons working decoy spreads and the pass shooting guys looking for a challenge to enjoy. Ramiro knows the importance of pigeon sustainability and is seeing more pigeons migrate to the province each season giving way to many more years of successful hunts. It is not always the number of fish or the biggest, but the experience that comes with travel and soaking in the scenery around you. This is why Patagonia could very well be the fly-fisherman’s Camelot. With its snowcapped peaks, lush forests and gin clear rivers, it is the place that every angler who has wielded the long rod dreams to visit. Beginning in the northern part of the Patagonia region is a lodge who helped put Argentina fly fishing on the map. The Olsen family has been guiding traveling anglers for the better part of 50 years, and they know every inch of the famed Malleo river that winds throughout the family's 40,000 acre ranch. Whether you like wide open areas where the river turns slightly and creates quiet pools, or smaller sections where the water moves quickly and the fish are aggressive, fishing from the San Huberto Lodge is sure to spoil any angler. This two story estancia is located in the shadows of the Lanin Volcano and near the town of Junin de los Andes. This lodge sits on the farm owned by Carlos and Carmen Olsen, and has been in their family since before the 20th century. Not too far from San Martin you will find the Olsen's other lodge, Collon Cura, which coupled with the experience at San Huberto makes the ultimate week long trip. The lodge sits on the banks of its namesake and offer steep banks and long winding bends to provide the perfect venue for a float trip. Using McKenzie boats, the Olsens slowly work sections of the river and numbers of fish can be staggering. These float trips are a great way to cover lots of area, and you will see some of the wildlife like Red Stag and huge boar. Collon Cura is the perfect change of pace from the Malleo River. We suggest the perfect itinerary to be four days at San Huberto and two in Collon Cura. Just below the 43rd parallel in Trevelin, Argentina is a place known as Challhuaquen Lodge. The name itself means, “fishing place” in the native Mapuche language. This six bedroom lodge, perched high on the banks of the Futaleufu, offers all the comforts of home in a ranch setting at the foot of the snow capped Andes Mountains. One of the best attributes of the Challhuaquen Lodge is its proximity to some great fishing rivers and streams like the Rivadavia, Carrileufu, Arrayanes, Frey and Nanty Falls. One may also take a trip to the famous spring creek called Arroyo Pescado, where trout are taking dry patterns most all day, every day. Headed south past the quaint Welsh village of Esquel lies an enormous sheep ranch called Estancia Tecka. At over 435,000 acres and 96 miles of private fishable water, the fish here grow big and wild. On the property there is one main river along with a number of small springs creeks where even a size 6 foam beetle has no chance of survival. The Corcovado River winds through the property on its way to the Pacific Ocean and is home to Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout. This larger river is fished mainly from drift boats, while some wading is done in freestone flats and banks. One smaller spring creek, Rio Tecka, is fished delicately from the banks with various dry fly patterns and produces exciting strikes and large fish. Estancia Tecka is home to two lodges situated in different areas of the ranch. Tecka Lodge is the original house dating back to the 1920s, and has four large bedrooms, granite bathrooms, and the traditional estancia character. You approach Tecka Lodge over a large set of rolling hills and see beautifully manicured grounds, set within towering Poplar trees and large equine and sheep paddocks.Caridad, the second lodge on the ranch, sits on the banks of the Corcovado River with the snow capped Andes Mountains as a backdrop. Caridad has six bedrooms, spacious bathrooms, and offers beautiful views of the surrounding river and countryside. -18- An Upgraded Cordoba...Is That Possible? It’s no secret that Trek’s Cordoba Argentina Dove Hunt is our most popular hunting program and for good reason… Our partners in Cordoba, H&H Outfitters, have established themselves as the most professional, honest and hard working outfitter in Cordoba. They are willing and able to give shooters the ultimate all-around experience, and this was never more evident than the last eighteen months when H&H committed to transform La Portenita, Sierra Verde and Rio Seco Lodges. After the success of Guayascate Lodge, H&H felt an obligation to bring the other lodges’ standards up to provide shooters with more deluxe options, while retaining the character of these older estancias. Although Guayascate is the finest hunting lodge in Argentina, some people still like the rustic appeal of Portenita, Sierra Verde and Rio Seco. This was certainly not taken away, but refined further with a professional interior designer adding touches of Argentine culture and flair. It all started almost 25 years ago with Sierra Verde Lodge, when young Alex Hayes decided to purchase the estancia and center his outfitting business out of it. This lodge has been a favorite among many and offers the same seven-bedroom set up, but now with new beddings and linens, new furnishings, remodeled bathrooms and fully upgraded spa. Edgar Quinteros is back as head guide with his engaging smile and enthusiastic charm, which many of you learned to love. charm oozes as you walk through. With a new fire pit off the front porch, you now have more choices to enjoy the fine Argentine wines while appreciating the quiet evenings. Long time H&H employee Lucas Barrera will be your head guide at Rio Seco, and is just another reason to hunt there. Hunting is better than ever in Cordoba, and now with the remodeling complete, it is the perfect time to travel down and see first hand just how great things turned out. Trek is happy to be offering all three lodges for the 2015 season, so call us today and reserve your space. Joe Only a short distance from Sierra Verde sits La Portenita, with a little larger set-up having six large bedrooms in the main house and a separate villa with three additional double bedrooms with private baths. You’ll notice the upgrades immediately when you walk through the door and venture through the hall with memories framed on the wall. The wonderful views have not changed, but now you can enjoy them from a much anticipated in ground fire pit, the new signature of H&H lodges. Pato Quinteros is following in his brother Edgar’s footsteps and is now head guide at Portenita. His passion for providing clients with exactly what they desire is evident with every group. The newest lodge to re-open is Rio Seco and honestly, it might be the pride of all three H&H lodges. This quaint six-bedroom lodge has always been enjoyed by smaller groups looking to keep things very traditional.
