ACM offers opportunities for high school students The Somerset County Campus of Allegany College of Maryland, which recently celebrated a quarter-century of service to the county and surrounding region, will present local options for higher education at the upcoming Somerset County College & Technical Fair. This Chamber-sponsored event has a long history of enabling Somerset County students to meet representatives of colleges, universities and other schools to learn more about opportunities in the region for post-secondary education and training. The 30th annual College & Technical Fair, from 9 a.m. to noon March 26 at the Pa. National Guard Armory in Friedens, annually features nearly 50 institutions of higher education and other organizations with post-graduation options for students. ACM-Somerset County representatives will be on hand to provide information and answer questions about courses and academic programs, admissions procedures, financial aid and other aspects of the college experience. The college’s well-regarded associate degree nursing program will be highlighted as will its many general education opportunities, whether at its campus east of Somerset, online or in area high schools. ACM has offered nursing education at its Somerset County Campus since 1991. The program, which has the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing’s full approval, is enabling as many as 20 area residents to begin work toward a career in registered nursing this fall. The campus also has a long history of offering general education courses – 4 whether to high school graduates or current high school students – that can be applied toward other degrees at ACM or transferred to other college and universities. ACM operates an extensive Early College program, which affords high school students the opportunity to jump-start college careers in their junior and senior years, typically at their home schools. This semester, 20 courses in highly transferable subjects, such as English, speech, history, psychology, biology and sociology, are being offered in 10 Somerset County high schools. ACM-Somerset County has adopted the slogan “Start Small. Start Smart. Start Here!” to emphasize that it is a good choice for students who want to remain close to home and attend a smaller school. For more information about credit opportunities at the ACM-Somerset County Campus, call (814) 445-9848, ext. 6100. Information is also available on the college’s website, www.allegany.edu. Friday, March 13 5-7 p.m. Former Builders Surplus building Program gives teens hands-on experience in business realm Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW), internationally acclaimed for its excellence, will host more than 2,200 students this summer in its seven-day journey into the world of business. Participants will act the parts of senior management in modernday companies that will face the same challenges that all American firms do, particularly those in Pennsylvania. Each summer, PFEW holds five, one-week individual sessions in July and August. The focus of the week is to group the participants into “management teams” of senior executives who have inherited imaginary “companies.” These teams, under the guiding hands of “executives-on-loan” called company advisors, operate their firms for a computer-simulated three-year period of time. Each day’s activities include presentations from world-class business people from a list that reads like a who’s who in Pennsylvania. The students hear about: business and finance, the role and relationship of business and government, taxation, business ethics, labor relations, and much more. The Somerset County Chamber of Commerce is proud to support PFEW to give local students this eye-opening experience. We encourage our local companies and civic organizations to provide sponsorships for our students and, if possible, volunteers for the sessions as PFEW is completely a product of the private sector. Every student attends PFEW on a fully tax-deductible $575 scholarship – the actual value of the scholarship exceeds $1,500 – which is provided by a local firm. Each student wears the name of their sponsor throughout the week and also corresponds with his or her sponsor following graduation to report on what they learned. PFEW is also an approved organization through the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program through the Department of Community and Economic Development. PFEW is open to all current sophomores and juniors in Pennsylvania and information on attendance, as well as program applications, can be found online at www.pfew.org. To learn more about this awardwinning program, visit the PFEW website or contact John Trombetta, president of the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education, at (814) 833-9576, ext. 106, or john@pfew. org. Questions can be directed to Amber Goss, schools assistant for PFEW, at (814) 833-9576, ext. 103, or [email protected]. 5 Summit Plaza, North Center Avenue, Somerset Precision Fitness & Highlands Chiropractic Mixer Thursday, April 9 5-7 p.m. Precision Fitness and Highlands Chiropractic 201 Georgian Place, Somerset Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Mixer Thursday, April 30 5-7 p.m. Penn Highlands Somerset Education Center 315 Georgian Place, Somerset PLEASE NOTE: Mixers may be cancelled if a minimum number of attendees fails to RSVP.
