The lifeguards from
Fort Hood’s seven onpost pools gathered for
the third annual Lifeguard
Competition Saturday at
42nd Street Pool.
The event organizer, Jody Valdes, Fort
Hood Aquatics, said the
postwide event builds
camaraderie by bringing
everyone together, and
it also serves as a training event, testing the lifeguards on their required
skills in a competitive
environment.
Practice is essential in
helping lifeguards remain
up to par on all of their

ROUND ROCK — More
than 350 Soldiers from the 3rd
Cavalry Regiment enjoyed a night
of free baseball courtesy of the Round
Rock Express during its Military Appreciation Night July 17 at the Dell Diamond.
In the annual event, the Round Rock Express,
a minor league baseball affiliate of the Texas Ranges, honored and supported present and former service
members and their Families with a night of free baseball
and military-themed recognitions.
“As civilians, it’s our duty to make sure we stop and honor
those that take time away from their personal lives and Families for the greater good of the nation,” said Ashley Kamrath,
event coordinator for Military Appreciation Night. “Baseball
is America’s favorite pastime, and this is just our small way of
saying ‘thank you’ to the brave Soldiers in uniform who have
sacrificed so much for our freedoms.”
Country music artist Jenna McDaniel started off
the game between the Round Rock E-Train and
the Iowa Cubs by singing the national anthem
while children of some of 3rd Cav. Regt.’s
deployed troops took to the field to
stand by the players during the performance.
“Brave Rifles” troopers are
currently deployed worldwide to locations in
Egypt, Cuba and
Afghanistan.
Sgt. Travis King is recognized
in front of a crowd of more
than 8,000 baseball fans with
his wife Sarika and daughter
Naomi, 11, July 17 at the Dell
Diamond Field during Military
Appreciation Night in Round
Rock. King will be deploying
to Afghanistan in the upcoming weeks.
Lifeguards from around Fort Hood compete in the annual Lifeguard Competition’s opening
event – the 500-meter swim – Saturday morning at 42nd Street Pool. John Herman from the
1st Cav. Div. Pool had the top time of 7 minutes and 51 seconds.
At the end of
the sixth inning,
Sgt. Travis King, a
public affairs noncommissioned officer assigned
to Regimental Headquarters
and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Cav.
Regt., was recognized with his wife
Sarika and daughter Naomi, 11, to a
crowd of more than 8,000 baseball fans.
King will be deploying to Afghanistan in the
upcoming weeks and said the baseball game was a
nice way to relax before departing.
The Iowa Cubs ended up defeating the Round Rock
Express with a shutout score of 7-0. But for Naomi, it really
wasn’t about who won or who lost. Instead, it was about spending
time with her dad before he left.
“This is my first time going to a baseball game. I’m happy it was
with my dad,” she said. “He promised to take me to another game
here as soon as he gets back. I’ll be sad when he’s gone, but I’ll
wait for him. He always keeps his promises.”
