Cobbler comes to life
Dave Weston, local author of
the very popular children’s
book, The Wellington Cobbler and the Wrekin Giant,
visited children in Dothill Primary School to talk about
the book and the local story
that has been handed down
through generations.
Dave talked to two Year
3 classes; that of Mrs Swinney’s and Mrs Renshaw/Mrs
Brench’s classes.
The children had a great
afternoon looking at the clay
models used in the illustrations in the book, listening to
the story and talking about
myths and legends.
Children pictured with
Dave Weston are: Imogen Jefferies-Wood, Alfie
Hughes, Ayden Corfield,
Jakub Chmura, Libby Capes
and Ellie Mead.
The book The Wellington
Cobbler and the Wrekin Giant, is published by Ellingham Press and is available
at £4.99 in Waterstones.

Amateurs appoint Neil
Neil Perks is joining Wellington Amateurs as General
Manager. Wellington play in
the West Midland Regional
League Premier Division and
chairman Dave Gregory is
delighted with the appointment.
“Neil approached me
some weeks ago and after
meeting him I decided to
offer him the position, said
Dave. “He has had experience at this level and he
is keen to work with our
present management team
in the future to ensure
match days in particular run
smoothly.
“As a club we have been
in the Premier Division for
nearly two years and it is a
very demanding league. Neil
can bring his wealth of experience to ensure match days
run a lot more smoothly and
he is eager to help me in the

general running of the club.
Neil himself said: “I am
extremely pleased to have
been offered the role of General Manager at Wellington
Amateurs. The club has
come a long way in a short
period of time and through
hard work and effort it has
become an established WMRL Premier team.
“After meeting and speaking to Dave Gregory the
Ams Chairman I was convinced within minutes that
the club is the right club for

me. Dave’s ambition burns
bright and I am looking forward to working with him
and the rest of the committee in achieving these goals.
“Dave, like me, is a football man and he is very keen
to push the club forward and
not sit back on what they
have already achieved, his
knowledge of football is vast
and it was a pleasure to
listen to him talk about football and his aims he has for
the club.
“I am still as ambitious as
the day I started in football
management and with the
experience I have gained
over the years I am hoping
that I can re-pay the faith the
club have put in me by being part of a group of people
that helps this club achieve
all of its ambitions.”
Mike Armstrong and John
Psaras will continue to manage and coach the first team
and Neil will work alongside
Dave Gregory in promoting
the name of Wellington Amateurs forward off the field.
Dave added: “Having established Wellington Amateurs as a Level 6 club we
are looking forward to playing in the FA Vase for the
first time next season and
we are aiming for the FA Cup
the following year. We have
come a very long way in a
short time and Neil will help
us build strong foundations
to continue our growth.”

Stabilisation contract is

Telford & Wrekin Council has
awarded the Enabling Works
contract for the Jackfield
Stabilisation Project.
The funding for the project was secured from the
Department for Communities and Local Government,
who will make a multi million
pound contribution to the
scheme. This funding is being part matched by Telford

The stabilisation will be
concentrated in Jackfield between Jackfield Tile Museum
and the Boat Inn - an area
which has suffered significant landslides in the past.
The Enabling Works contract was awarded to local
contractor McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd who will start
work shortly. This follows a
national procurement process.
A public drop in session
will be held on February 4.
This will include a presentation to provide a project update and to explain delivery
of the project in more detail.
The proposed scheme

“Charter Day marks the
granting of Wellington’s
market charter by Henry III
on the last day of February,
1244 - that’s 770 years ago
this year.
At 11.15, see the King’s

reading out the King’s
proclamation and presenting the charter to the people of the town. After more
musical entertainment, at
midday the scene fast-
forwards 500 years to the

ancient Court Leet is convened in Market Square to
appoint its officials for the
year ahead. Will Kay the

the keys to Wellington Market for another year? Will
Jerry the Ale Taster keep
his license to sup? And
will Percy retain his title as
the oldest Town Crier in
England? Only the Jurors
can decide!”

“We thought that instead
of sending out Christmas

damaged pavilion in one of the
borough’s parks. Work on site has
now begun.
The scheme will improve the
building significantly. New toilets
and a larger cafeteria will be
provided, possibly extended
by external decking.
It is planned to be open by Easter.

E ARE often told
gloomy news
about the plight
of British town
centres. We’re urged to “do
something” about it. And all
sorts of experts who know
how trends are going pontificate about what Government
and Big Business should do.
The other day I met an old
friend who said the usual,
“Poor old Wellington, it’s not
like it was, is it?” I asked
whose fault she thought that
was and she was surprised
at the question. I asked how
often she went into Wellington (she does live here) and
she thought she hadn’t been
for several years. So I said,
“Then it’s your fault isn’t it?”
We’re still friends.
When you think about
it you realise that our local
shopkeepers are well worth
supporting and that it’s in
our own interests to at least
try very hard to keep them
going. All the ones I know
are, in their own way, the salt
of the earth. At least those
who are most successful are.
They provide a service to
us as well as simply sell-

ing goods. They are also a
friendly bunch of people, if
for no other reason than that
it is in their interests to be.
If you go to a city it is quite
usual to find the businesses
bright, brash and soul-less.
The “town centre” of Telford
is going that way and I find
it unfriendly. Telford’s shopping centre is a copy of an
American out-of-town shopping mall. Despite the efforts of some of its workers
it is a miserable place. Its
shops seem dictated to by
their Head Offices, with not
enough responsibility given
to their local managers and
staff and no understanding
that towns are different from
each other.
Oh dear, I’m going to be
accused of another bit of
Telford bashing though I find
Telford a building site with
delusions of grandeur. It’s
run by the money men with
little concern for their cus-

tomers rather like our main

good people who work there
but of all the head offices
where the money grubbers
dictate to the branches.
Back to local towns, with
real town centres, full of character and actually wanting
to provide a service for their
customers. “Ah!” Some will
say, “But I can’t get what I
want from there.” My answer
to that is that, apart from
a couple of short holidays,
I can honestly say that for
the last three years I haven’t
bought anything from any
shop outside Wellington.
While I think about it, apart
from my wedding ring (from
Shrewsbury 63 years ago)
I’m not wearing anything that
didn’t come from Wellington
market; that includes my
shoes, watch and wallet. My
glasses and dentures also
came from Wellington. So
don’t say I never practise
what I preach.
Thinking of all the odd
things I’ve needed lately, a
gas cooker, Santa Clause
outfit, camera, knife sharpener, Christmas cards,
medicine, bank, butcher,
supermarket, pipe tobacco,
eggs, copy of Wrekin News,
weather-proof coat, carpet,
duvet cover, plant markers
for the Peace Garden, warm
trousers, telephone, torch,
belt, vacuum cleaner, wine,
lamp, rugs! I could go on forever but they all come from
Wellington - mostly from the
market.
There are many advantages in buying locally, one
of the most important being
that if anything’s wrong (perhaps your own fault) there’s
a friendly person who will
sort it out. Then it’s not far
to go and petrol is expensive, and there’s no parking charge to worry about.
A while ago I had a problem with a vacuum cleaner
I bought in the market. It
wasn’t Graham’s fault but he
not only replaced the part
quickly and efficiently but
also collected and delivered
it. Would that have happened
if I’d bought it online? I think
not.
There’s one thing wrong
with Wellington though - we
don’t have a bookshop that
sells new books. There’s an
excellent second-hand bookshop in the market, kept by
Rob, one of the best I have
ever seen. Go and buy a
book from him. Between
them, WH Smith and Menzies destroyed the two excellent bookshops that we had
Jenny Smith in the market
and Vision Books in Market
Square. Having spoiled their
rivals. trade by undercutting
on all the most profitable
lines, like best sellers and
text books, the “big boys”
have abandoned our town.
In both cases the local staff
was helpful and easy to work
with but constantly overruled
by their head offices.
Please will someone now
start up a book shop in our
town? I know the supermarkets sell some books but
they don’t seem interested
in the kind I want to read. I
can buy them in Much Wenlock, Church Stretton, Ludlow or Bridgnorth but why
not in Wellington? You can
buy a copy of Allan Frost’s
latest on line, but not in the
town he’s writing about. Wellington has the biggest and
best free Literary Festival in
Britain but we don’t have a
bookshop! Well, that’s my
grumble over.
It’s great to see Dawley
folk beginning to realise that
they have a unique culture
of language, full of wit and
fun. I’m a Wellington man
but I admit that Dawley does
“talking broad” better than
we do. Oakengates (once
“the brightest little town in
Shropshire”) has its own attractions as has the ancient
town of Madeley, which predates Ironbridge by maybe a
thousand years. The villages
of Ketley and Hadley have
their shopping and business
centres too. If you don’t want
to lose them - use them.
Buy local whenever you
can. Support the real town
centres. Make it a social
occasion; meet friends and
neighbours. Enjoy free parking, a coffee, a library book
or a swim. In any good traditional town there are many
extra facilities and shopping
or simply visiting them is
a pleasure. We customers
have the power when we
care to use it. Our local traders treat you as a friend; let’s
treat them as friends.

Mela at Hadley’s
Hadley Learning
Community was,
once again, another fantastic success.
Founding principal at the
HLC, Dr Gill Eatough, said:
“Our Multi-Cultural Mela was
a fantastic success! The
sports hall was packed with
families, friends, staff, governors and students from
across our community, all of
whom enjoyed some wonderful entertainment. HLC
students performed in the
steel band, which was great.
“We also had lots of other
entertainment including a
professional Bangra group
who gave a lively, energetic, colourful performance,

“Everyone enjoyed delicious Asian foods and there
was a lot to do visiting all the
stalls. My thanks to all the
staff at HLC who organised
the event and to our community for their incredible support in attending the event
and celebrating with us.”
The event was organised
by HLC teacher Sajid Younis, who said: “Our Multicultural event 2013 was a huge
success, attended by many
people from all walks of life,
there were entertainments
for everyone. I want to thank
students, parents, staff and
everybody from the community who took part. This is
the biggest event of its kind
happening in any school in
the borough. Its aim is to
promote community cohesion and community safety
by having different organisations setting up stalls to offer
advice. Eid is a festival celebrated twice a year across
the Muslim world and Divali
and Vesakhi are celebrated
in Hindus and Sikh cultures,
as is the Christmas celebrated mainly in the Christian
world. Young generations
need to be aware of this in
order to better equip themselves to be successful in
this globalised world.
“I’d particularly like to
thank West Mercia Police
Telford, Community Safety
and cohesion Telford and
Wrekin, BBC Radio Shropshire, Shropshire star and
Wrekin News for their continued support. The whole
aim of the event was to get
everybody together to experience how other cultures
and festivals like Eid and
Diwali are celebrated. This is
how we can promote community cohesion and better
understanding of each other.
By doing this and involving
young people and the community can also help understand each other’s cultures
which promotes respecting
everyone around us and live
in peace and harmony.”
Councillor Kuldip Sahota,
leader of Telford and Wrekin
Council, said: “I was delighted to be invited as council
leader to the Multicultural
Mela which happened at
Hadley Learning Community, especially as it’s the
site of my old school which
I attended a long time ago.
“Since both of these festivals are so close together
on the calendar, I think it’s a
great idea by the school to
celebrate them jointly with
the community. Eid being a
Islamic festival and Diwalli
a Hindu and Sikh festival,
jointly celebrated by all communities, irrespective of their
faiths, with music, Bhangra
dancers and Indian food.
What more can you ask for?
“The event was a fantastic
success and showcased the
diversity and vibrancy of our
community as well as providing an excellent opportunity
for different organisations
to work closely together to
promote what services are
available to people from different cultures.”

Barking Mad - and proud of it
A
NNE Kessell was
eager to find a
business she could
run from her home
in Muxton and was thrilled
to discover a home based
enterprise with the bold
name Barking Mad, which
provides home from home
pet care as an alternative to
kennelling.
When Anne discovered
that the local Barking Mad
franchise was available she
jumped at the opportunity.
“I loved it so much that I decided to take on the Telford,
Wellington and surrounding
areas!” said Anne.
“I am now able to combine my love of dogs with
running my own business.
I really enjoy meeting likeminded people and being
able to solve their pet care
dilemmas, it gives me a
tremendous amount of job
satisfaction. Our customers have complete peace of
mind knowing their dogs are
being cared for in a home
environment similar to their
own, whilst our host families
are able to enjoy all of the
benefits of owning a dog
but on a part time basis.
They say the best part about
being a grandparent is that
you have all the fun before
handing the grandchildren
back, and Barking Mad is
the canine equivalent.”
“The response so far has
been amazing, I’ve been
overwhelmed by the number of people who have
enquired about our unique
service.”
Founder of the operation
Lee Dancy, developed the
flourishing enterprise from
an idea which was originally conceived out of sheer
frustration when she failed
to find suitable care for her
own dog. Amazingly, some
pet owners simply did not
go away if it meant leaving
their pets behind and recognising a definite niche in
the market, she expanded
the service from her base in
Lancashire.
With heavy emphasis on
professionalism and high
standards, Barking Mad arranges accommodation for
dogs in a genuinely caring environment with select
host families, where their existing feeding and exercising routines are maintained.
The outstanding success
of the venture is due not
only to the pets being ex-
tremely well cared for, but
also because they are suitably matched with a host
family whose environment
is similar to their own. Many
hosts are retired dog lovers who, having owned pets
all their lives, do not wish
to commit again to the full
time responsibility of owning their own dog but miss
the companionship. In line
with the ambition to exceed
expectations, Barking Mad
operates a customer satisfaction and referral programme that enables them
to carefully monitor the
service they provide, whilst
increasing their client base.
Due to the demand for
the service Anne is always
looking for additional hosts.
If you would like to enquire
about becoming a host or
would like to discuss using
the Barking Mad service for
your pet, please call straight
away.
Anne can be contacted

KEEP AN EYE ON
YOUR OLD FRIENDS
As Britain braces itself for plunging temperatures,
gale force winds, ice and more flooding, older people’s charity Royal Voluntary Service (previously
WRVS), is calling on the public to make sure their
older friends, family and neighbours have everything
they need to stay safe and well.
David McCullough, CEO of Royal Voluntary Service, said: “Severe weather can have a devastating
effect on the health and safety of older people, so
it’s vital that friends, family and neighbours check in
on older people in their town and offer to help where
they can.
“Simple things like making sure older people have
enough food in the house and offering someone a lift
to a doctor’s appointment or to the shops can make a
huge difference during the inclement weather.”
Royal Voluntary Service volunteers will continue
to provide services in the local area through the bad
weather, as well as assisting the emergency services
team by offering refreshments and comfort to people
affected by the storms, floods and power cuts.
To find out more about how you can help older
people in your area or to request help, visit www.

Exciting opportunity to join
Ercall Wood Technology College
Ercall Wood Technology
College is on the move. In
September 2014 the start of
the academic year will mark
the opening of a brand new
state of the art educational
establishment at the heart
of the Wellington community. The new school year
will herald significant change
and a host of opportunities
for the young people who
are part of the Ercall Wood
community.
Our recent OFSTED report (2013) commented on
“The school’s strong commitment to the spiritual,
moral, social and cultural
aspects of students’ education has created a tolerant
and harmonious community”. This is something we
are very proud of being as
we are multi-cultural community school serving an
ethnically diverse population
from in and around Wellington. OFSTED also identified
the strengths of our Pastoral
team stating that “Behaviour
is good and students show
pride in their school and in
their achievements. They say
they feel safe and that they
get on well together”.
Ercall Wood Technology
College, in Wellington, is
recognised as having one
of the very best primary to
secondary school transition
programmes in the area.
Transition Co-ordinator, Alison Warrington explains “We
are committed to supporting our children through the
transition process right from
year 5 through to year 7. Our
in school support helps children to overcome any anxieties and other issues that
they have during their transition. We ensure that children
and staff get the opportunity
to meet each other during
the early stages allowing a
more positive, confident view
of our school. Taster lessons
provide the opportunity to
develop an awareness of different surroundings, adults,
routines and equipment.
Our week’s transition has
been very successful as the
children are able to experience a full timetable. We are
J
also proud of the success of
our summer school which
provides a further chance to
alleviate any final anxieties
all leaving behind a positive
view of their future here at
Ercall Wood.”
Ercall Wood also has a
nationally recognised peer
mentoring
programme
where students in older year
groups act as mentors and
friends to year 7 pupils. This
also helps students settle in
very well when starting at
Ercall Wood.
OFSTED (2013) highlighted the “strong leadership”
of Headteacher Chay Davis,
which has in turn led “a trend
of steadily improving standards over time”. The “Commitment and determination
of the Headteacher have
earned him the respect of
staff, parents and students”
and this is something echoed in the regular Parent
View surveys we undertake
throughout the year. Currently 97% of parents whose
child attends the school
would state that their child
is happy and they would
recommend Ercall Wood
Technology College to another family as their school
of choice.

Being a horsey girl and having spent years outside in winter in wellies and boots with frozen feet with layers and layers
of socks on I was a bit sceptical about these ‘Heat Holder’ socks,
nothing has ever worked before and I always come back off a cold winters’
ride with frozen toes. But these socks are a necessity if you enjoy outdoor activities in winter, they really are brilliant. They are lovely and soft on the inside and at
2.3 tog you don’t need extra socks underneath to keep warm. I am not sure how I have
managed all of these years without them. Perfect for winter activities or just getting cosy at
home with your feet up.

HAVE MIRUJI FOUND THE SECRET
TO HEALTH & HAPPINESS?
Special report by Katy Rink
Although the trial demonstrated that MBT is effective in helping people
change behaviour and lose
weight, it also provided
striking examples of MBT
helping all kinds of other
health problems.
It certainly looks like
they have judging by the
people I spoke to when
I visited the Shrewsbury
health spa last week.
The success stories from
people using the special
MBT (Miruji Behavioural
Therapy) chairs might
sound extraordinary - but
clients of all ages really are
finding in Miruji the motivation to make life-transforming changes.
Doctor Nick Richards, an
independent consultant occupational physician and
former GP, who oversaw
the trial says: “What Miruji
are doing is quite remarkable. People who have suffered for many years with
health conditions are reporting huge benefits after
just a few weeks. It is helping many people by reducing their musculoskeletal
aches and pains, their levels of stress, anxiety and
depression, and also even
helping some to come off
strong analgesia and return
to their preferred lifestyle
and employment.”
I met single mums who
had been unlucky in love
and lost all self-esteem
- and were almost housebound with depression.
Thanks to Miruji these ladies had gone back to work,
taken up new hobbies and
felt confident enough to
start socialising again.
I spoke to elderly gentlemen who had cast aside
mobility scooters and got
back on their feet again. I
met people with all kinds of health complaints
from chronic fatigue, to arthritis, sciatica, stress,
depression and anxiety - almost without exception, they told me how MBT helped them lose
weight, sleep better, improve muscle tone and gave
them the motivation to live healthier, happier lives.
I had the full 90 minute Miruji experience myself
and came out feeling relaxed, happy, full of good
intentions - and ready to turn over a new leaf in
2014.
The therapy is a combination of deep relaxation,

in a therapeutic massage chair coupled with neuro-linguistic programming - rewiring your brain,
if you like, when you are in the optimum state to
receive the positive messages. It is powerful stuff and it works.
The results of a recent, six month clinical audit
trial show that 77.3% of people finishing the trial
lost weight and 86.4% lost an average of 3.5 inches
around the waist. The total weight-loss in the core
study group of 34 cases was 305llbs, or an average
of 8.97llbs a person (or 4% of bodyweight). Participants committed to two 45-minute sessions in
the chair per week.
In terms of weight-loss,
he said: “The conditions
for successful weight loss
might be compared to a three-legged milking
stool - eating less, regular exercise and having
the motivation to change one’s eating behaviours.
Miruji provides this third, essential component.”
He added that using the chairs himself had
changed his own behaviour around food - he now
eats smaller amounts more slowly.
Miruji is attracting the attention of doctors in
America. Doctor Christine Salter, a conventional
doctor and alternative therapist from Missouri,
visited Shrewsbury to try out the therapies for

herself and was so impressed, she is considering
integrating MBT in her own integrative practice called ‘vibrant health investment programmes’.
She said: “I recognise that when you combine
straight medicine with some alternative therapies,
people can do better. It is as simple as that. The
sooner the UK begins to invest in more integrated,
functional medicine, the healthier and happier
patients will become. I think Miruji will be huge.
Alan Sharrock is really on to something important
- he really is a visionary.”
SANDRA LOSES OVER
4 STONE IN 6 MONTHS
When Alan Sharrock appeared on Dragons’ Den
two years ago with his idea of opening Miruji
health spas throughout the country, he got a severe
beating from all the business experts who said his
idea was crazy. Buoyed up by the huge success and overwhelmingly positive client feedback - of
the past year, Alan is applying to brave the dragons
again. This time he will be armed with his positive
clinical audit trial results and his ambitious plans
to franchise Miruji throughout the country.
Alan said: “ We have proved that MBT is a extremely effective way of helping people with health
issues that are not being addressed by mainstream
medicine. I have had local doctors saying the results we are achieving are better than the results
they can achieve using traditional treatment.
“It’s extremely satisfying when a 81-year-old
says to me that she feels better now than she’s felt
in her whole life . What we are achieving here is
incredible. The transformation for these people is
miraculous.
SANDRA is typical of many women
these days that are busy with work,
children and making sure the housework is done.
“When someone has been off work for four years
due to health issues, doesn’t have the energy to get
up in the morning, aches all over feels depressed
and can’t even think about taking the kids on holiday, for that to be reversed in just 12 weeks is truly
remarkable.”
Sandra has neglected herself over the last few
years because she was too busy looking after
everyone else. She was left feeling worn out,
frustrated and tired. Sandra did what many people do and started comfort eating. Bit by bit the
pounds started to pile up and before she knew it
she was a size 20.
Dr Richards considers that the results of this
small clinical audit are very encouraging and believes they should help to improve current practice and provide more cost-effective assistance for
general practitioners, the NHS and industry; both
locally and further afield.
He said: “The apparent ability of this clinical audit at the Miruji Health Spa to help reduce obesity
merits further scientific study, along with its ability
to improve general well-being and help many people return to their work and activities they previously enjoyed. Clinical audit involves ‘improving
the quality of patient care by looking at current
practice and modifying it where necessary’.”
Doctor Richards will now publish the findings of
the clinical audit trial and would like to thank Alan
Sharrock and all his staff at the Miruji Health Spa
for their support and assistance with this clinical
audit’.
Alan said they were also discussing working with
a university hospital to carry out a full scale clinical trial looking at weight, depression, anxiety, ME,
arthritis and muscular skeletal issues.
So it looks like Miruji have indeed found the
secret to health & happiness and at £10 for a 90
minute treatment it’s something that everyone can
afford.

The turning point came when she saw an advert
for Miruji health spa and initially thought I don’t
believe it, how can anyone lose weight by relaxing on a chair. Something made her pick up the
telephone and book a trial treatment and she
hasn’t looked back since. She says ” When I went
along the first time I didn’t know what to expect
but I was so unhappy with myself I was prepared
to try anything. I spoke to Caroline who explained that it’s the combination of the Sit & slim
chair which gives a therapeutic massage at the
same time as listening to the audio programme
that changes the way you think about food.
For the first 5 minutes of the massage I was
thinking this feels odd but then I started to relax
and that’s when I started to enjoy it. I had a 45
minute treatment which left me feeling totally
relaxed, something I hadn’t felt in years. I felt
energised when I got home and I noticed I felt
more positive about being able to lose weight
and keep it off. I couldn’t wait to have my second treatment and enjoyed it more than the first
one.
For the first time in years I was looking after myself, it was my, me time. I lost a stone after just 5
weeks and the more I lost the better I felt. I have
now lost 4 and a half stone and gone from a size
20 to a size 12.
My friends don’t recognise me when they see
me in the street. They only know it’s me when
I start to talk to them. When I tell them I’ve lost
all this weight by sitting on the Sit & slim chair
they don’t believe me. I say to them just go and
try it for yourself. I would definitely recommend
anyone to try it. You will love it I’m sure.
“I NEEDED SOME ME TIME!”
AS a supply teacher working with
reception and key stage one Sarah
Allman, 61, was looking for a new way
to unwind.
She signed on to the Miruji six month trial and was
delighted with the benefits – she lost a stone in
weight and loved having time to herself to de-stress.
She said: “I thought it would be good for me. I
hadn’t a great deal of weight to use but I thought
the relaxation and general therapy would be good. I
did appreciate it.
“I needed a bit of me time. I found the tapes quite
interesting and was always keen to see what the next
one would be. The first thing that impacted me was
the huge amount of sugar and fat we consume. It did
prick my conscience.
“It has stopped me eating the extra biscuits and made
me aware of the extra foods I was eating.
“I have recommended it to other people for destressing, if they are a bit tense. I would say to the
doctors that it should be recommended for people
in stressful situation or who wanted weight-loss, to
change their mind-sets towards food. I think it’s great.
Alan and the girls were helpful. It’s an easy place to
walk into and feel at ease.”

NEW YEAR - NEW YOU!
“MIRUJI GIVES ME STRENGTH TO GO ON”
FORMER nurse Julie Field,62, from
Bayston Hill, has suffered from chronic depression
since the age of 17. To make matters worse, she
suffered a back injury, lifting a patient who had
gone into cardiac arrest and was forced to retire
early.
Knowing the chair is available, whenever she is
feeling low, has become a wonderful “crutch”,
she says, both physically, in terms of her back pain
and mentally, lifting her spirits and giving her the
courage to pick herself up and carry on. She even
believes it may have kept her out of hospital.
Life, she says, was bleak before she discovered
the Miruji chair in September 2011. The free taster
session was enough to convince her that the vibrating wellbeing chair and accompanying audio
were the answer to her prayers.
“I can’t put into words the benefits I’ve enjoyed,”
she said. “I sound like an advert and I don’t mean
too, I’m just telling the truth.
“It’s not just the chair, it’s the whole Miruji experience and the fact that I can pop in whenever I
like, there’s no need to speak to people if I don’t
feel like it. I come out feeling so much better. It
is keeping me going, in every sense.
“The depression is evil, quite frankly,” she said.
“Sometimes it is very difficult to even get up in
the morning. Knowing that Miruji is there is like
having a safety net that gives me the strength
to go on.
“I have tried so many things over the years – I’ve
even been a patient at Shelton (mental health)
Hospital. I vowed I would never go end up there
again.”
“It Has Improved
My Life Immensely”
ANNE is a typical middle aged woman who has
enjoyed bringing up the children and making sure
everyone is happy.
Since having the children she has found that she
hasn’t had much time for herself and her weight
has steadily increased. Over the last 15 years, she
has tried all sorts of diets and weight loss clubs but
found they deliver only short term results.
Anne says, “I suppose I’m a typical yo-yo dieter. I
will try the latest fad diet and lose weight initially
only to find that it comes back on with interest. I
find it very frustrating that I end up heavier than
when I started the diet. I have recently started to feel
a bit depressed about how I look. I suppose now the
kids have left home I’ve more time for myself and
when I think about my weight it makes me angry
that I have ended up being so over weight.
When I saw the advert for Miruji I thought no way,
you can’t lose weight by sitting on a chair. I think the
reason I picked up the phone to book a session was
because they were offering a £10 trial at the time so
I thought what have I to lose.
“I did try going to the gym but I found the social interaction terribly hard. My family recognize
that I am one hundred percent better now that I
have Miruji to support me.”
I’VE DITCHED
ANTI DEPRESSANTS
& CHOCOLATE
A HEAD-ON traffic collision in 2002
left Judith Morgan, 47, with a trapped
nerve and terrible neck pain which
interfered with sleep and contributed to
stress at work.
“I’d had physio for years to try and get some
movement back in my neck,” she said. “It was
getting worse.
“When I went for the Miruji trial I suddenly found
I could turn my head better than I had been able to
in years. I’ve also lost half a stone, although for me,
it is less about the weight-loss.”
Judith also suffers from hyperthyroidism (an
overactive thyroid), which causes anxiety, stress,
irritability and, she believes, also attacks her joints.
She was diagnosed in 2006 and had been taking
antidepressants but says the Miruji therapy has
allowed her to come off the tablets.
“It’s the mind coaching that’s so effective. It really
is superb. You are in a transient state so you aren’t
completely hypnotised – you can still giggle at
some of the things you hear. The chair is brilliantly
relaxing. Sometimes it’s hard for me to make time
to get to Miruji but I’m always so glad when I do. It
is a bit of me time and I always feel so much better
about myself afterwards.
That was just over 3 months ago. I absolutely love
it, I’ve lost 3 stone in weight, my aches and pains
have disappeared, I have loads of energy, I’ve started
swimming again and I’m much more positive about
life. I can honestly say it has improved my life
immensely. I really look forward to my Miruji time.
“I felt so good after the first session, I thought ‘I
like this’,” she said. “I am anti-depressant free for
the first time in nearly seven years. I am also a huge
chocoholic and used to think nothing of eating two
giant bars of Galaxy in one sitting. I never do that
now. I know I don’t need it to make me feel better.”
“I tell all my friends – you don’t have to be
overweight to benefit. It’s the whole package. I
come out feeling utterly refreshed and people
notice the difference in me afterwards.
The quality of the massage is better than some
hands on massages I’ve had. I feel so relaxed and
refreshed after my treatment, it makes me feel like I
can achieve anything.”
Judith believes the therapy has changed the way
she feels about herself, through tuning in to her
subconscious:
“I really believe it would be a fantastic investment
for busy offices to have so that employees could
benefit from it in their coffee breaks.”

“I could hardly walk because of the
pain, now I’m looking forward to
dancing at my son’s wedding”
RETIRED policeman Ken Young thought his
physical life was over before he sat in the
Miruji chair.
He had suffered from inflammatory arthritis in
one knee for many months and was subsequently diagnosed with sciatica on top. By April last
year, he was struggling to get out of bed. He was
forced to hire a mobility scooter for a holiday in
Anglesey
“I was in amazing pain, starting in my lower back
and going all the way down my legs. The sister at
the hospital said there wasn’t a lot that could be
done for it,” said Ken, 67, from Telford.
from the Wrekin News and decided to sign up
for a £5 full session.
“It took a few days to feel the full benefit but
then I suddenly realised the pain had gone. I
could walk more than a couple of yards. I walked
from Miruji to the Darwin centre and back,
which I haven’t been able to do since last April.
I had been talking to someone about getting a
blue badge before. Now I can walk right round
Attingham Park, which I haven’t done for years.
“I used to be a police dog handler and did lots of
walking. It had got to the point where I thought
I might never be able to walk much ever again.”
“It’s an amazing deep massage, exactly in the
places where I feel the pain. The audio relaxes
you into a state where you are more susceptible
to the benefits of the massage. It has given me
my active life back. I can now play golf quite comfortably, walking between shots. I don’t need to
come off the course and go to bed for an hour.”
He learned about the benefits of the Miruji chair
Now Ken has sessions in the chair twice a month,

or whenever he feels he needs a “top up” – he
had a session today, ready for his son’s wedding.
“My son gets married a week on Saturday,” he
explained. “ I thought how on earth was I going
to cope – but now I’m looking forward to it – I
will be ceilidh dancing!
“I am so convinced of the benefits of the chair
– if it was on the NHS it would save the country
millions.”
“I HAVEN’T FELT THIS GOOD
IN THE LAST 10 YEARS”
CAROL has been off work for 3 years due to
health issues. She suffers from depression,
anxiety, and fibromyalgia.
Over the last 12 weeks she has started to feel
good about herself, her quality of sleep has
improved and it’s helping to reduce pain. Carol
has changed her behaviour around food and
walks more, she feels less stressed more relaxed
and has more energy.
“I’ve been coming here for 12 weeks and I can
honest say I’ve never felt this good. It’s like
having a glass of champagne every day. The
benefits are fantastic. I feel so relaxed.
Carol says “I haven’t felt this good in the last 10
years, I feel more confident and positive about
myself. Before I started the programme
most days were black days, now I feel great most
days. I have tried all
sorts of diets and slimming clubs but I still craved
chocolate and crisps, now I don’t have any
cravings at all. It’s amazing. It should be available
on the NHS. Carol has lost 12 lbs in the last 12
weeks and is on target to lose 4 stone this year.
Every day I feel better and better. When I wake
up I feel that it’s going to be a good day today, I
know it is. I just love it and other people have
noticed how happy I seem to be and its all
down to Miruji.
I would advise anyone to give it ago.’

scouters of the troop).
A programme of refurbishing and renovating of
the site ready for the new
season of camping in 2014
is currently under way and
already it is showing signs
of life once more. Already
there have been repairs
and replacements to vandal damage to the two main
buildings including doors
and electric works. The toilet
block, consisting of separate
male and female toilets and
showers, is due for refurbishment in this programme as
is the site layout to distinguish pitches. We hope to
have all the work completed
for opening to campers at
Easter 2014.
We feel that the camp
site, which has lain dormant
for some time, has great potential for scouts to enjoy the
exciting countryside available to us. To those not initiated The Wrekin sits central
to the beautiful Shropshire
country side. We have the
Stretton Hills twenty miles
away, the Severn Gorge museums of the industrial revolution, the River Severn itself
where canoeing is popular.
The site is two hours from
the Welsh coast and similar distance from Snowden.
In the meantime scouts
camping here will not even
have to leave the site to

itself. There are many walks,

Forests with deer roaming

We would in the meantime welcome enquiries and

Mis-sold PPI? Now
there’s a local solution!
Bewildered by adverts and
press stories? Bothered by
‘robot’ calls? If you’ve had
a loan, credit card, mortgage or finance deal, it’s
possible you were misssold Payment Protection
Insurance. Some people
had PPI added, but weren’t
told!
Some people say: “It’s
easy to do it yourself. Just
download the forms on the
Internet, fill them in and get
the money you’re owed!”
What if the bank says: “The
computer says no”? Is that
right? You need an expert.
Someone who can ask the
right people the right questions. Someone who can
ensure you get your hardearned money back. Meet
Steve Bleasby of Acorn
Claim Assist.
Steve says: “I established Acorn Claim Assist
to offer readers an easy,
effective local way to claim
compensation for misssold PPIs. Prior to early
retirement I worked in senior management for a top
High Street bank for over
30 years. I’m familiar with
how PPIs were sold and
miss-sold. I’ve been dealing with PPI claims for over
10 years.”
He points out: “Our average settlement figure on
agreed claims is a shade
over £4,500. And do remember, it’s not the bank’s
money! It’s your money
which we return to you!”
He added: “We’re
unique! From start to finish
I personally deal with your
claim. This includes a free
initial consultation in your
home, to establish if you
have a valid claim.”
Some firms offering this
service charge between 20
to 40%, Acorn Claim Assist charges an inclusive
12.5%. Why the difference?
Steve says: “We’re a family
business. We don’t need a
large telesales team or processing centre. It’s why we
offer our service at 12.5%.
As I work no win, no fee,
there are no nasty shocks
should you turn out not to
be owed anything.
“Someone told me we’re
a PPI claims company with
a conscience. Whilst that’s
flattering, all I know is, I do
my best to ensure you get
your money back!”
But Steve adds a note of
caution: “If a bank or credit
card company phones you
or writes to you out of the
blue, don’t ignore them.
Because they set an arbitrary date and will consider
your claim ended! If you
get a call or letter contact
us as quickly as possible.
Whatever you do, don’t ignore them.
“Also, if we’re already
acting on your behalf and
you get a letter or a call
from your bank ‘requesting
details’ politely refer them
to us as your representatives, as we have all the
details they need.”

WEEKEND
LEAVE FOR
KEN AND
HIS PALS
W
E had a weekend leave and
my friend Ken
took me to visit
his family at Blakely in Manchester. On our way back,
before we caught our train
to Catterick, his mother (a
lovely Welsh Lady) made us
an egg and chip meal. After
cook-house food and rationing it was like nectar.
We also went to see his
girlfriend Ruth, who was at
work in a large Lewis store
in Piccadilly.
Shortly after they married, they later had a baby
boy who Ken swore would
play football for Manchester
United.
Apart from Ken playing
the bass drum when we
were marching, he played
cornet when in concert. One
day he was sat on his bed
cleaning his cornet, having

finished with the polish and
put his cornet on the floor
and was reaching for his
duster. At that precise point
the band drummer, a huge
lumbering chap called Crisp,
decided to stroll down the
barrack room and put his
foot on Ken’s cornet without
even noticing it was there.
Ken picked it up and simply couldn’t comprehend the
flattened instrument. Then
he saw me laughing on the
opposite side and l told
him what had happened.
He chased after Crisp who
didn’t even know that he had
done the damage.
Another time Ken forgot
his bass drum sticks when

his fist. Lambourne caught
him so he had another three

In 1948 the camp was
given two tickets for the
Wembley Cup Final and
this year it was contested
by Manchester United and
Blackpool. I immediately
thought ‘no chance’ but I
hadn’t reckoned on Ken. He
managed to acquire both
tickets; one for 7/6d and the
other for 12/6d. Obviously he
had the dearer one and gave
me the cheaper one. The
next problem was how to
get there. Ken had his train
fare and I had, as usual, very
little, so the only way was to
hitch-hike. Luckily for me,
RAF Catterick’s front gate is
on the A1, commonly known
in those days as the Great
North Road.
Al the traffic from south
to north and vice-versa used
that route as motorways
had not been invented. I
don’t think I had been on
the thumb for more than ten
minutes when a Whitbread’s
beer tanker stopped. When
I told the driver my ultimate
destination was Wembley,
he told me what a lucky so
and so I was because his
depot was quite close to
Wembley stadium.
He asked me if I had a
ticket and when I told him
how I got it he offered me £5
for it but I was determined
to see the match for myself. He turned out to be a
very nice chap and when we
stopped at the transport café
he ordered ‘double’ – one for
me. I was very grateful, as it
hadn’t occurred to me how I
was going to eat.
When we arrived in London it was around 5am and
my good friend went about
three miles out of his way
to drop me off close to the
stadium. So I lay down on
the steps and nodded off for
a while until the first of the
supporters started to arrive.
Although I had played a
few football matches for the
military band it was a totally
different atmosphere stood
with the huge crowd. It was
so enjoyable.
The match was terrific
with a well organised United
side and a Blackpool side
that was not quite so organised but with the individual skills of the wonderful
Stanley Matthews and his
colleague Stan Mortensen.
They both played very well
but United triumphed 4-2!
Next month Ken plays by Royal appointment

will be familiar
with Cordingley
Hall in Donnington, but Nicola Casey
has taken on a long lease on
the venue and has turned it
into a glittering new venue
fit for any wedding or special
event.
Nicola is no stranger to
the world of events, having
run a mobile bar for many
years. She has catered for
a Channel 4 documentary
starring Kirsty Alsopp which
was staged at Shugborough
Hall in glittering surroundings. She has catered for
the comedian Lenny Henry’s
sister with Afro Caribbean
cuisine and a gospel choir
thrown in.
Being able to put down
roots and run a local venue
has always been Nicola’s
dream and when Cordingley
Hall became available about
a year ago, she very quickly
contacted the Donnington
Parish Council who own the
venue.
“It was very exciting,”
said Nicola. “Once I was approved by the Parish Committee, I couldn’t wait to put
my stamp on the place.”
Nicola hails from Lichfield
and has worked in the catering business since she
can remember. She was
recognised as the youngest
licensee in Birmingham city
centre, when she ran Miss
Moneypenny’s bar next door
to the Alexander Theatre in
Queensway.
She met and married
Adrian, who hails from Gornal and very soon concentrated on providing mobile
bars for events up and down
the country. Adrian owns

she told me. “Adrian’s business is going very well and

a black and white theme.
We managed to secure a

presentation evening. Anyone who knew the old building would not recognise it
now. Nicola’s flair and a lot of
hard work has transformed it
into an events venue fit for
any occasion.
The entrance room as
you come in has a wonderful
black and white chequered
floor with leather black and
white sofa’s. In the corner is
a white Baby Grand Piano
and glittering bar.
The function room will
seat 150 for an event or 250
people for a buffet, once
again following the black
and white theme.
To give a touch of glamour the ceiling is eloquently
draped with a black star
cloth to give a marquee feel
to the place. With bar and
stage the setting is ideal for
a wedding or family function. It also boasts a giant
mirror-ball the same size as

Nicola runs a variety of
events with some hosting up
to 300 guests. The facility is
completely flexible and she
is even planning a Members
VIP Lounge where she will
encourage local business
leaders to come along and
enjoy each other’s company
in relaxed surroundings.
Nicola is rightly proud of
the transformation and is
particularly proud of the fact
that she used primarily local

So, what is Nicola’s target
audience?
“I am very keen to point
out that Casey’s Cordingley
Hall will continue to provide
the same facilities as it always has. We’ve smartened
it up quite a lot and I am
sure couples looking for an
affordable venue for their
wedding reception will see
the potential.
“I’ve planned over 60
weddings in my career and
I always sympathise with
the couple and their parents
having to pay the heavy financial cost of a hotel wedding. At Casey’s we provide
the glitz and the glamour any
hotel can offer but we will
work with the customer to
provide what they want and
very importantly what suits
their budget.
“We have our own kitchens and can provide anything from pizza and chips
to a seven course dinner
– whatever the customer
wants, we will provide and
we will work with them to
make their wedding or special occasion a great success.”
Casey’s has ample parking and it is a flexible and
affordable venue. Nicola has
turned a dowdy old building
into a fabulous up-market
venue but she’s kept her feet
on the ground – she wants it
to remain part of the community that she has come
to love.

Marking Holocaust Memorial Day this week, Wrekin
MP, Mark Pritchard signed
the Holocaust Educational

in the House of Commons,
honouring those who died
during the Holocaust as
well as honouring the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to
educate young people about
what they endured.
Monday 27th January will
mark the 69th anniversary
of the liberation of the Nazi
concentration and death
camp Auschwitz-Birkenau,
the site of the largest mass
murder in history.
In the weeks leading up
to and after Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of
commemorative events will
be arranged by schools,
faith groups and community organisations across the
country, remembering all the

victims of the Holocaust and
subsequent genocides.
Mr Pritchard said: “Holocaust Memorial Day marks
the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp
Auschwitz-Birkenau - and is
an important opportunity to
remember the victims and
survivors of the Holocaust.
I encourage all constituents
to mark the day and to join
members of my community
in the fight against prejudice
and intolerance.”
Karen Pollock MBE, Chief
Executive of the Holocaust
Educational Trust, said: “We
are proud that Mark Pritchard
is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day. It is vitally important that we both continue
to remember and learn from
the appalling events of the
Holocaust - as well as ensuring that we continue to
challenge anti-Semitism and
all forms of bigotry.”

DIG FOR VICTORY!
J
UMPING forward a
few years there was
a tragic drowning in
the Trench Pool and
even though by then I was a
reasonable swimmer this experience had put everyone
off ever going for a swim in
the pool. Even though we
went to the same school,
he was older than me and I
didn’t know him and cannot
recall his name. I believe
it was reported at the time
that weeds just below the
surface with a contributory
factor in his death.
Having been thus warned
it was a very hot summer
evening and me and my
mate Ben (Cliff Bennett)
were heading towards the
Valley Pool to check it out
to see if we could go for a
swim. There didn’t seem to
be any weeds so we went in.
He was always a better
swimmer than me but I must
have set off first because I
was still in the front when we
had got three quarters of the
way across. Then I started to
feel something touching my
legs and at first I thought it
must be a fish. Then I realised that it was weeds and
they were getting entangled
round my legs.
I’d got enough sense
to keep myself as high in
the water as possible and
managed to get the last ten
yards towards the bank. I
scrambled out and looked
back to see an ashen faced
Ben reaching the bank. We
sat down and I don’t think
either of us mentioned it to
the other for some time. It
was a bloody stupid thing
to do and it was very fortunate that one of us wasn’t
drowned.
I had survived a possible
drowning earlier in my life
and Ben had suffered a similar experience.’
Derek Gambie continues his intriguing
story of growing up in Hadley.
Dig for Victory’ was the
familiar war cry and according to the history books, millions of people responded
to this request. My father
was no exception and as
soon as he got settled at
Manse Road, he set about
producing as much as
possible form his quarter
acre we he had behind the
house.
As well as the gooseberry
bush that I was born under
in July ’42, there were several apple trees, a pear tree
and loads of blackcurrants
and raspberries. There was
no such thing as a rotovator
in those days so the whole
vegetable plot had to be
dug by hand. As there was
only an outside Elson toilet
at the time, the soil had
been conditioned by over
a hundred years of ‘night
soil’ and as I was to find
out for myself in later years
it was beautiful to dig and
you hardly needed your foot
on the spade to push it into
the earth.
There was really too
much ground so dad decided to diversify a little and
laying hens arrived, followed
by a couple of piglets. Rhode Island Reds crossed with
Light Sussex produced a
good supply of eggs and
then a good sized eating
carcase. At Christmas the
largest cockerel ended up
on the table along with
sprouts, carrots and potatoes straight from the gar-
den.
I followed dad round like
a shadow and had my own
little vegetable patch and
could pluck a chicken before I was ten years old.
One year dad decided that
we would rear a couple of
geese for the Christmas table so we had a little trip
over to Much Wenlock to
collect the week old chicks.
I was amazed how quickly
these little lovable fluffy
creatures turned into hissing arrogant thugs but that
is exactly what they did.
Through the winter
months it was my job to
give the birds their afternoon
feed as it was dark before
dad got home from work
and they would have gone
to roost. I hated this as for
sure the geese would sneak
up behind you when you
were filling the feed troughs
and peck lumps out of the
backs of your legs. The
cockerels were not much
better so all in all this was
not my favourite job.
Come Christmas the
largest and most arrogant
goose was selected for
slaughter but there was a
snag. It was easy enough to
pull a chicken’s neck but the
neck of a full grown goose is
another matter. Dad, being
good at solving problems
winked at me and told me to
hold the head of the goose
on his wooden workbench.
He held the body and
quick as a flash I saw his
raised arm descent and
the razor sharp axe he was
wielding severed the head
and I was left holding it in
my hand.
After the initial shock
I was not sorry for the
goose as it had given me
some grief over the last
few months. Unfortunately
geese are rather rich and
the eating was a little disappointing and I have only
rarely eaten goose since.

A Family
Chronicle
Irene’s Story
F
OR some time, it has
been my intention
to compile a family
chronicle, embodying four generations - one
could perhaps suggest an
alternative title, which would
add a touch of romance a saga! I am sitting in a
large airy room and the day
is bright and sunny. It is
pleasant to look out upon
grassy lawns and trees
freshly green. We are presently experiencing the rainy
season here in South Africa.
Tawmont Farm has been my
home since February 1988
and the year is 2000 AD. I
celebrated my 76th birthday
Hello, everyone, writes Rona Harris. My sister Irene celebrated her 90 birthday on Saturday 11 January. Some
time ago now she gave me a story which she had written.
It is about her earlier life when she volunteered for the
royal Navy and was accepted to serve in the WRNS during
the 1939/45 war.
I found it to be very interesting, and I am certain that
some of you will also. I have a couple of pictures which
I believe are very good and as you will gather I am very
proud of her and her life, even with its ups and downs
which happen to all of us. She will have my love and
respect always. I hope you will enjoy her story.
in January of this year.
I am blessed with an
excellent memory and as
I reminisce over my life, in
some ways it resembles a
kaleidoscope of so many
memories, some particularly
clear, whilst others are fragmented and fleeting - the
happy and delightful times,
the sad and worrying times
on which the spirit must not
dwell and now I must continue my chronicle...
I was born in 1924, just 12
years after the sinking of the
‘Titanic’ and just six years
after the end of World War I.
It was not a particularly good
time to be born; England was
still reeling from the horrendous waste of human lives,
which the 1914-1918 war had
claimed; Germany and the
rest of Europe were also still
counting the cost.
I was fortunately, however,
in that I was born into a
household of eight adults all
of whom plainly adored me.
As the first grandchild of Joe
and Lucy Williamson of Light
Birch Farm, Whaley Bridge,
I was very special and the
farm was the centre of my
universe. My parents were
Jim and Eva Rogers who
later moved out of the family home to Spring Cottage,
Chinley. My mother became
housekeeper to a lady there,
a Mrs Scott, whilst my father
was employed at the local
bleach and dye works.
Thus, I stayed at Light
Birch for most of the time,
but when I became five
years of age, my parents
had vacated Spring Cottage
and moved to the village of
Bugsworth, where I began
my schooling at Bugsworth
Council School. I took to this
momentous stage in my life
like a ‘duck to water’ and
revelled in every aspect of
primary education under the
expertise of my teacher, Miss
Emma Littlewood, a spinster
of indeterminate age. She
possessed the rare gift of
being able to reach into the
very soul of each child and
my love and respect for her
remained right throughout
my school life and beyond.
When my official education came to an end, I held
a couple of inconsequential
jobs with local firms and it
was during this part of my life
that the dark clouds of war
gathered once again over
England and Europe and
in 1939 Britain and France
were at war with Germany
for the second time in 21
years! During this time, my
father and I travelled daily to
our respective jobs in Manchester. Familiar landmarks
disappeared from the scene
as air raids were carried out
by the German Luftwaffe,
as regular as clockwork. At
strategic points, lists of casualties were posted and sandbags were hastily brought
onto the scene to support

masonry which had somehow remained intact.
It was in November 1942
that my father was conscripted into the Army and
sent for training to Blackpool
and thence to Didcot. In my
teenage zeal to `do my bit’
in this war , which in a single blow had destroyed my
youthful aspirations, I volunteered to serve in the WRNS
and on the 22nd December
1942, I found myself travelling to Blundellsands, near
Liverpool, where training
began in earnest. I quickly
became encompassed by a
comradeship never before
experienced. It became an
adventure, a breaking away
from the quiet unhurried existence which had cocooned
me for 18 years; it was time
to spread my wings and experience life and to travel.
I kept in touch with my
family by writing a weekly
letter home but as all mail
was censored such letters were not really newsworthy. From Liverpool to
North Wales, North Wales
to Portsmouth, my service
career progressed, from
Portsmouth over to the Isle
of Wight where plans were
being formulated for an inva-
sion of Europe. America had
now reluctantly entered into
the war and this small island
was literally heaving from the
influx of troops from many
nations.
All types of shipping was
anchored in the harbour at
Cowes and consisted in the
main of L.C.T.s and L.C.I.s
(landing craft tanks and infantry) and also large support vessels, ‘Lawford’ and
‘Hillary’ as well as some Belgian and Norwegian ships.
There was also a large American ‘floating dock’. Behind
the ever-present tension of
these times and in spite of
persistent air raids, the indestructible feeling of ‘togetherness’ and sharing prevailed.
It was not possible to allow one’s thoughts to speculate as to what the outcome
might be, but suffice to say,
we were virtual prisoners on
that small island. ‘D-Day’ (Operation ‘Overlord’) was
launched on the 6th June
1944 and after some months
we were dispersed to other
parts of the country. Now
I was back in Portsmouth
and apparently a contingent
of Wrens was required for
service in Australia and I was
amongst the selected 200.
> Husband Henk.
At the dead of night we
were taken by naval transport to one of London’s
mainline stations and thence
we travelled non-stop to Liverpool where we boarded
the liner/troop ship ‘Athlone
Castle’.
There stretched a five
week sea voyage ahead of
us, without escort, and this
was a huge adventure for
most of us. The sea journey
was via Panama. However,
whilst we were sailing across
the Indian Ocean, the ship
came to a full stop and apparently the starboard engine had failed.
The ships engineers
worked feverishly in order
that the vessel could proceed and whilst repairs were
being carried out the ‘action stations’ alarm sounded.
This was the indication that
an enemy submarine was
around. Depth charges were
dropped and the submarine
miraculously retreated from
the area. It was assumed that
it had already dispensed with
its torpedoes.
Everyone breathed a huge
sigh of relief, we disembarked
at Wooloomooloo Docks in
Sydney and were hosted by
an Australian women’s club
in central Sydney where we
enjoyed a hearty lunch. The
next leg of our journey was
to Bondi Beach where we
were billeted in two apartment blocks. Later we were
relocated to the Astra Hotel
which had been vacated by
the Air Force. At first we were
quite overawed by the bright
lights and and carefree atmosphere of Bondi and the
Australians did us so proud
by their genuine friendship
and welcome and I made
some very good friends.
‘V.E Day’ (Victory in Europe) was spent with friends
in Melbourne where I just
happened to be on leave
and sometime later, ‘V.J Day’
(Victory over Japan) was
spent on ‘home grounds’
in Sydney. In May 1946 I
was reluctantly on my way
back to Britain (again on
the Athlone Castle) and my
three months remaining service contract was spent in
Scotland.
After the brightness of
Australia, England presented a very gloomy picture
and all service personnel
who had been demobilised
were feverishly sourcing the
job market. I was fortunate
in securing employment
with the Chad Valley Toy
Company where I remained
for about two years, after
which I returned to Australia
in January 1949. Here I met
up with several ex Wrens
and got down to the serious
business of earning a living. Initially I was employed
by Qantas Airlines where I
remained for six months in a
very boring clerical job.
It was at this point that I
had the opportunity to take

we were able to get a home
together and finally went to
live in Coventry. As in many
industrial cities in England,
Coventry was striving to effect a recovery from the war
as quickly as possible and
work was plentiful. In 1968,
an opportunity arose for us
to purchase the local post
office, but in the same year
my husband suffered a heart
attack. This was a very anxious time for us, but he made
a good recovery and was
able to resume his employment after about six months.
My job as sub-postmaster at
the Binley Woods Post Office
proved to be a very successful enterprise and through
hard work became classified
as a ‘city sub-office’. We kept
the Post Office for 10 years,
but I had actually worked
there for 11 years.

up social welfare work, Sadly, I was not offered an equal
opportunity to that which
was given to Australian exservice women. In other
words, I had to endeavour
to succeed the hard way.
Thus I accepted a position
which prompted my ongoing interest in social welfare
and I was classified as an
‘Assistant Matron’ in a large
property which housed small
children between the ages of
three and six years of age.
These children were the
victims of neglect, poverty
and abuse of one sort or
another and it proved to be
a very difficult undertaking to
rehabilitate them. Many were
re-homed with foster parents
whilst others seemed destined for institutional life.
One little rebel was Walter
McDonnell whose chief aim
in life was to reject any form
of discipline and as a result
this little boy was always
excluded from outings with
well-meaning volunteers. I
had a sneaking regard for
this four year old and de-

friends of mine who would
have adopted him, but due
to the fact that he had been
abandoned by his unmarried
mother at two weeks and
on record was classified as
having a different religion,
they were obliged to settle
for long term foster caring.
It was around this time
that I made the acquaintance of a young Dutchman
(ex-Marines) and we became
firm friends. After a while it
seemed that we did not need
anyone else and we married on 2nd June 1951 at
St. James’ Church, Croydon,
NSW. Our reception was held
at the home of friends, Nea
and David Malcolm.
Our disappointment was
that it was impossible for us
to purchase a home of our
own. All kinds of accommodation were scarce and
Australia at this time was illequipped to house the large
influx of immigrants from Britain and Europe, who were
seeking a new life there.
James, our son, was born
on 11th May 1952 and we
reluctantly decided to return
to Britain - a big mistake.
One good thing was that
spired, this was not a particularly good move
and after the friendliness
of the people in Coventry
we found the Devonians very
‘clannish’ and narrow in their
outlook. However, I did make
one very good friend there,
Minnie Orchard.
The business we purchased in Devon did not turn
out as we had hoped and so
my husband obtained work
as an electronics engineer
at the local cheese factory.
Neither of us really settled to
life in rural Devon and when
Henk saw an advertisement
in one of the national ‘dailies’ offering employment in
South Africa we decided to
cut our losses and look towards another move. Within
two weeks, Henk was on
his way to South Africa and
some three years on, with
> James,
Timothy and
Clare.
Our family had now grown
to three - James, Timothy
and Clare, and the children
had reached a stage in their
education where they could
adapt to moving away from
the West Midlands and so
the decision was taken to
move on. Between the years
1972 and 1978 Henk had
worked on contracts in Iran,
Japan and Norway whilst I
continued my work in the
Post Office. It was in May
1978 when we moved south
west to Devon. As it tran-
holidays in between, I sold
the business and family
home to proceed with Tim
to South Africa. By this time,
James had acquired his own
property and Clare was in
Bristol studying for her B.Sc.
The day I left England my
emotions were in turmoil - I
was leaving two of my children behind. But at least
I would be re-united with
Henk and together we could
plan our future in a new
country.
After the period of social
isolation in the south west,
the friendliness of the people
in South Africa was heart
warming. To this day some of
our best friends are English,
but the majority are South
African, born and bred. Both
Henk and I have always enjoyed a sense of well-being
and belonging in South Africa - so perhaps this is my
destiny...
In the years 1986 to 1998 I
derived great enjoyment and
satisfaction in my work with
mentally handicapped people and though my job was
not well paid in a material
sense, the rewards were numerous and generated love
and understanding which is
difficult to define. Eventually,
James and Clare came to
live in South Africa and the
‘highlight’ in our family was
in January 1989 when Clare
and Michael were married in
Pretoria. Sadly for the rest
of the family, they decided
to return to England where
they are enjoying life with
their seven children So, to
Anthony, Chaeli, Gregory,
Phoebe, Zoe, Kallie and
Jamie, I dedicate this family story. In addition, I am
compiling several albums of
family photographs, dating
back over a century.
With the exception of Private Frank Williamson who
was killed in action at Passchendaele in the 1914-1918
War, aged 22 years, all the
members of the Williamson
family touched my life to a
greater or lesser degree.
On the 24th March 1998,
the love of my life - Henk
- departed this life. During
our time together (46 years
and nine months) there
were many instances when
we anticipated each other’s
thoughts. He was always
there for me, giving his encouragement and support in
every project I embarked upon. In my work at Postmaster
at Binley Woods Post Office
he was a ‘tower of strength’.
I feel sure that he would
find great enjoyment reading
this chronicle.

T
his Valentine’s Day,
why not really work
hard to show the
love of your life that
they really are the one and
only love of your life?
You’ve been together for
40 years? Or 40 weeks? It
doesn’t matter! You are still
in love with the person of
your dreams!
So, use this Valentine’s
Day to really prove this to
them! Get them the best
card that you can, buy
them the best chocolates or
confectionary that you can
afford, pop into town and
buy them something that’s
glitzy, yet not garish, that’s
blingy, yet not brash, that’s
romantic but not cloying,
Flowers, plants,
gifts or special
cupcakes for
Valentine’s Day!
Flowers and plants are a
great way of adding a natural
touch to Valentine’s Day. But
if the love of your life is badly
allergic to flowers there are
alternatives. Wooden flowers, for example and potted
plants that don’t - or very
rarely - flower are an option.
Or, perhaps, an entirely
different sort of a gift?
Wellington Market is filled
with inspiration, and Francis
James in Bell Street Wellington and Allum’s Jewellers in
New Street have many items
that are either fun, quirky or
traditional or even a combination of all three!
Or what about a tray of
some of the most delicious
special cupcakes ever made
in the entire history of cupcakes? Delivery is free on
orders over £10 or more
and cost from just £1 each!

Shropshire Walks for Health
Bromford is partnering with
Shropshire Council and
Shropshire Primary Care
Trust to kick start a healthy
new year and is inviting people to join in with weekly
group walks.
The Walking for Health
Group meets every Thursday at 1.30pm leaving from
Abbots Wood Day Centre,
opposite Beagle House,
Shrewsbury. All walks are
free and led by trained volunteer walk leaders.
Mick Dunn, walking coordinator from Walking for
Health, Shropshire Council
says: “Walking with a group
is a great way to get fit and
stay healthy as well as meeting new friends and discovering lovely walks in your local
community.”
Lyn Turnbull, Bromford
support worker, says: “We
started the walking group in
2012 and it’s grown to 60
people at times. The group
has seen friendships develop, one couple got engaged
since they met on one of our
walks!”
The walking group caters
for mixed abilities: Level one
is on pathways suitable for
wheelchairs, level two is a
slightly faster, longer route.
Walks take place in all weather so people are advised to
wear suitable footwear and
clothing - at this time of year,
walking boots or wellies
would be beneficial. Anyone
is welcome and complementary tea and coffee is available after the walk at Beagle
House. There is also a week-

Dr Morton said: “We
were surprised and shocked
when it was announced, and
we’ve been looking carefully
at the complex data.
“We appreciate there are
spending pressures, but it’s
clear to us Shropshire’s losing out due to its unique
health profile. We have a
combination of rurality, deprivation, an ageing population and an increase in
people with long-term conditions.
“Those factors rarely
come together elsewhere,
so delivering healthcare in
Shropshire is very expensive compared to other areas.”
Dr Morton believes
Shropshire’s disadvantaged
by changes to the funding
formula used to allocate
health resources, and a reduced importance given the
age profile of local populations.

when we inject these into

giving our own hyaluronic

lift the skin to smooth away

As we become older the
amount of hyaluronic acid
in our skin decreases which
leads to loss of volume. In
many cases this is a choice
for women and men alike
who are looking to improve

normally occur with ageing.

New nursery for town
Wellington is welcoming a
new day-care nursery, as a
previously empty building is
rejuvenated, with a Redundant Buildings Grant from
the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).
The £18,000 grant allows
business partners Debra
Holiday and Corrine Mitchell
to transform the former so-
licitors building on Church
Street into a modern nursery
accommodating 43 children
in the first phase, and a total
of 100 children once the
whole building is renovated. It will be called ‘Church

Debra explains: “I’ve always been inspired by what

the roads and footpaths in
untreated areas may remain

help by clearing snow and
putting salt on their local
roads/footpaths to reduce
the likelihood of cars skidding and people slipping

Some householders balance bar heaters on top
of newspapers and phone
books creating fire hazards.
The fire service is working
with housing officers from
Shropshire Housing Group
to help spread the word
about the dangers.
“More people use porta-
ble heaters as fuel costs rise.
They should ensure they’re
safe,” said Sam Hamer,
community fire safety officer.
Fires are caused by negligent use of equipment
or supply, faulty heating
devices, overheating, and
combustibles being too near
heat sources.
“Home fires are devastat-

injury or death,” said Sam.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued the
following guidelines:
l Unplug electric heaters
when you go out or go
to bed.
l A permanent safety guard
should be fitted
l Store and change cyl-
inders for portable gas
heaters outside or in a
well-ventilated area
l Use gas and paraffin heaters in well ventilated areas
l Follow manufacturers’ operating and maintenance
instructions
l Don’t use flammable materials, aerosols or cleaning fluids near heaters
l Children or pets mustn’t be
left unattended if portable
heaters are switched on.
l Don’t place heaters near
furniture, curtains or bedding
l Clothes can easily ignite if
you stand or sit too close
to heaters
l Don’t place them on uneven surfaces or where
they can be easily
knocked over
l Never move a heater while
it’s alight or switched on
l Don’t dry clothes on them.

NEW FLAT ROOF
TO COMBAT
BAD WEATHER
The recent extreme weather
has battered homes up and
down the country, leaving
many needing of some
T.L.C. High winds and heavy
rain caused roof and guttering problems for many
homeowners, with flat roofs
being a particular concern,
but with the introduction of a
state-of-the-art flat roof system from Anglian Home Improvements could end this.
Traditionally, flat roofs are
high maintenance and costly
as they are easily damaged
by extremes of temperature
like heat and frost. Rainwater
doesn’t run off flat roofs, so if
there’s damage it can result
in leaks.
But rather than using felt,
bitumen, stones and grit, Anglian Home Improvements
has developed a superior,
durable flat fibreglass roof
system. There’s no joints,
it’s not leak prone, is quick
to install with a lifespan of 30
years. It’s so strong it can be
used safely as an attractive,
easily cleaned 100% waterproof finish for balconies,
terraces or walkways.
There are two types of
Anglian flat roof: the Eco,
with a layer of thermal insulation with reduced heat loss
and the Standard, ideal for
outbuildings, or where insulation levels are adequate.
They come in a wide range
of colours, anti-slip surfaces
and mineral finishes, and
can include roof-lights and
rainwater outlets. Anglian’s
lead roll effect even replicates traditional lead roofs.

Your shed’s
rubbish!
A British inventor has designed a shed made from
waste materials that is recognised as the most secure
garden shed ever.
Nigel Broderick came
up with the idea for the
DaylightSecuregarden
shed after somebody broke
into his wooden shed and
stole his bicycle. It’s the
first garden shed awarded
the Secured by Design certification.
“Things should be just
as safe outside your home
as inside,” says Nigel, “I
wanted to come up with a
sustainable solution.”
The shed’s made of TPR,
an award-winning alternative to concrete, made with
waste diverted from landfill. It also features a high
security double door and
composite roof to allow
daylight in.
Brodco, the firm behind
the DaylightSecure shed,
“Yes, it
is!” says

is a member of Secured
by Design, a UK police initiative to ‘design out’ crime
by using high quality, innovative products and processes.
“Not only is the Daylight
Secure shed made from
recycled products and
carbon neutral,” says Alan
McInnes, SBD’s general
manager, “it also helps prevent crime and stands out
as something different.”

TICKETS for Jimmy Carr were expected
to sell quickly when they went on sale.
But The Box Office system at Oakengates Theatre @ The Place crashed under the pressure, forcing the suspension
of ticket sales.
Jimmy has always had a popular
following in Telford and has previously
performed his warm-up material in Oakengates.
A second late show at 10.30pm will
now go ahead. A testimony to his popularity in Telford.
Jimmy is performing his warm-up
show and offers a chance to test his
material to a wider Telford audience. The
first show starts at 8pm, the extra show
is scheduled for 10.30pm.
Theatre Manager Debbie King said:
“We knew demand would be high to see
Jimmy but our booking system crashed!
“The high demand for tickets means
this second show should come as a
welcome addition for customers who
may not have managed to get tickets for
his early evening show. We apologise for
any inconvenience.”
Tickets for the 10.30pm show on
Saturday 8 March cost £16 each which
includes a £1 handling fee.

Soaring Bucks
ready for title
challenge
Sport
An excellent Christmas and New Year programme
was enough to send AFC Telford United soaring
into the Skrill North title reckoning. Victories over
Boston United, Brackley Town and Hednesford
Town really laid down a marker for Liam Watson’s
side as realistic challengers.

> New Telford loanee Shaun Walley in action on his debut.
I
MPRESSIVE as results
were, it was the manner of the victories that
signalled the potential in
this Telford side. Each time
they trailed, but each time
they fought back to win. A
continuation of that kind of
form would go a long way to
achieving promotion.
Having seen off most of
their promotion rivals over
the Christmas period, hosting Barrow would not have
seemed too daunting a task.
The Cumbrians lay in the
lower reaches of the Skrill
North table and had succumbed 3-0 to the Bucks
back in November. But a
peek at the current form table suggested that Watson’s
men needed to be wary, as
Barrow had accumulated a
useful series of results and
arrived at the New Bucks
Head having just taken
three points at promotion
contenders Brackley Town.
As it turned out Barrow
were fair value for a 1-0 win.
On a muddied pitch and on
a blustery and wet afternoon
the visitors adapted the better. And it was they who
had better of the possession
and the chances. But the
first clear cut chance did fall
Telford’s way as Mike Phenix
broke away on the right to
close in on the Barrow goal
only to see Keeper Tony McMillan save well at his feet.
The Cumbrians were a
constant threat on the break
and nearly took the lead
when Sam Sheridan should
have done better when he
had space twelve yards out
only to blast the ball wide.
But it was the same man
who made amends five minutes later as this time he
Lez Dean brings
you the latest
news from the New
Bucks Head.

finished well after being set
up by Phil Marsh. The Bluebirds rarely looked in danger from that point and they
held out for the final fifteen
minutes with some ease.
Things did not get any
easier as Telford then travelled to league leaders
North Ferriby United. But
Watson’s side could take
heart from their results
against the league’s leading
lights so far this campaign,
they boasted an undefeated
record against any side in
the Skrill North division’s top
seven. And they could not
have made a better start
as returning skipper Simon
Grand netted after just three
minutes.
>Club servant, Ryan Young celebrated his 350th
game at North Ferriby
But the Villagers soon
showed why they led the
table as they hit back with Kendall netting twice to turn Whalley making an impresa quick fire double around the game on its head. With sion on his first appearance
the quarter hour mark, Ryan new loan signing Shaun for the Bucks it was then
Telford’s turn to show their
character as top scorer Adam Farrell responded with
a fine finish just after the
half hour.
With both sides prone to
defensive lapses and both
boasting plenty of firepower
it seemed a certainty that
there was to be plenty more
goals in this encounter, but
it was not to be as a quieter
second half was goalless,
though there were strong
appeals that a Farrell effort
had crossed the line.
Credit too was due to
Bucks keeper Ryan Young
who produced a late, late
save to secure a point for
the visitors.
So, the title race remains
an open one, with Telford
very much in the mix. But if
the Bucks are to push their
way to the top they will need
to display the kind of form
and character they showed
over the festive season. The
acquisition of Shaun Whal-
ley is a positive sign that
Telford are determined to
challenge and that there is
belief inside the club. Watson has worked with the
Luton Town man before at
Southport and rates him
highly.
The Bucks boss has even
gone so far as to state that
Whalley is ‘too good for the
Conference North’ that is a
big statement but one that
shows a lot of faith in the
loanee. Watson believes
that Whalley can bring out
the best in other members
of his squad and that might
just be enough to secure a
positive outcome at the end
of the campaign.
The table is tight and that
suggests that any team capable of consistency would
be prime candidates to take
the title, the Bucks are most
certainly positioned well
enough and most definitely
amongst those who are capable of doing so.

around 30 pupils at Thomas Telford took part in the
scheme last June.
The Driving Academy
looks at early driver education by getting children
as young as 11 behind the
wheel of a car whilst bringing
the Highway Code into the
classroom through an interactive online programme.
Pupils also use their hazard perception skills in the
online academy and receive
a score depending on how
well they perform. The top
50 made the leaderboard in
the competition which was
launched last March. Alex
won with a score of 4,310.
The Year 11 pupil, from
Fallings Park, Wolverhampton, has now won 40 driving
lessons up to the value of
£2,000. The lessons cover
a range of pre and post-17
tuition in conjunction with
Goodyear’s partner Young
Driver who specialise in
driver training for children
aged 11 and upwards. The
package will enable Alex to
start to learn before he gets
to the age of 17 and see him
through to his test on the
open road.
Michelle Fisher, Goodyear Brand Manager, said:
“We launched our pioneering Driving Academy programme in 2012 to educate
children about the importance of road safety by
placing a real emphasis on
understanding the Highway
Code.
“Instead of placing restrictions on young drivers,
which is currently being discussed by the Government,
which could simply delay
bad behaviour, Goodyear
wants to address road-user
attitudes and driving behaviour through education from
a younger age.
“The online programme
has been very well received,
we have had great feedback
from pupils and we send
our congratulations to Alex
on achieving such a high
score.”
Sir Kevin Satchwell, headteacher at Thomas Telford
School, in Telford, said: “We
take road safety very seriously and welcome these
schemes as they can help
prepare young people for
the huge responsibility of
driving a vehicle.”

Ford Ranger - launched

overall International Pickup of the Year in 2013,
while the latest Ford Fiesta Van - which accounts

awarded two ‘best small

Ford also claimed two
awards for the overall
‘van manufacturer of the
year’ from Fleet Van and
Van Fleet World publications.
Mark Ovenden, Ford
Britain chairman and
managing director, said:
“Ford customers have
the best-looking, most
technologically
advanced, fuel-efficient and
fit-for-purpose CV range
ever to choose from, and
this is reflected in our
outstanding awards success.
“On top of the launch
investment committed for

aftercare infrastructure
in the UK, launching 100
dedicated Transit Centres over the next 12
