been planted in Wellington County.
Wildlife Strikes
During the months of October and
November, County of Wellington
Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) are urging
drivers to be more alert as there is an increase
in deer movement. Knowing how deer move during this
time of year, is critical in avoiding a wildlife collision.
Be Better Prepared For
Whatever Winter Brings
Assemble a Car Emergency Kit early
in the season. Make sure to include:

In 2014, officers investigated 318 collisions
involving wildlife in Wellington County.

The County of Wellington O.P.P. would like to remind
motorists of a few simple tips, which may reduce
your chance of becoming involved in a vehicle-deer
collision.

• Be attentive, especially from sunset to midnight and
during the hours before sunrise. These are the highest
risk times for deer-vehicle collisions.
• Drive with caution when moving through deer-crossing
zones. Deer seldom run alone. If you see one deer,
others are likely nearby.
• When driving at night, use high beam headlights when
there is no oncoming traffic. The high beams will better
illuminate the eyes of deer on or near the road.
• Slow down and sound your horn with one long blast to
frighten the deer away.
• Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your
path, but STAY IN YOUR LANE. Many serious collisions
occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit
another vehicle or lose control of their vehicles striking
trees, ditches or other immovable objects.
• Always wear your seat belt.
• Do not rely on devices such as deer
whistles, deer fences or reflectors to
scare away deer.
Remember, your priority
is the safety of you and your passengers.

Have you gotten your snow tires
mounted yet?
Tires play a major role in the
handling and braking of any
vehicle, especially in adverse road
conditions. Snow tires are far more
effective than all-seasons and should
be on all four wheels of your vehicle!
