The Gordon County Chamber of Commerce and its Drugs Don’t Work Committee are able to assist businesses operating in Gordon County accomplish significant discounts on Workers’s Compensation Insurance Premiums by assisting them in the drugfree workplace certification process. This service is available to all companies, regardless of their membership in the Chamber. For many businesses-especially those involved in transportation, construction or food service, where the risks of job related accidents and injuries are increased--that 7.5% premium reduction equates to thousands of dollars a year. Justin Timms, Vice Chair Gordon County Schools Drugs Don't Work Committee Presents Signature Programs The Drugs Don’t Work Committee will present two signature programs in April and May, both intended to support its mission to keep Calhoun-Gordon County drug free. The committee will begin with its annual Lunch & Learn Event on Wednesday, April 13 at noon in the Calhoun City Depot and then follow up with a May ---- Drug Take Back Event at locations throughout the community. The committee has invited the Chamber’s Existing Industries Committee to attend. At the event, representatives of both the Calhoun City Police Department and the Gordon County Sheriff’s Offfice will participate as guest speakers. The subject topic will include remarks on the benefits of a drug-free workplace. Follow the Leaders...... Calhoun’s own Kirk Alexander recently achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel with the U.S. Army. Alexander is the son of Dennis and Sharon Alexander (CFO of the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce). Commissioner's Award presented to Sarah Husser, Director Gordon County Regional Visitor Information Center For Outstanding Leadership in Promoting Tourism 2016 Georgia Commissioner of Economic Development Chris Carr presented Sarah Husser, Gordon County’s Director of Convention & Visitors Bureau, with the coveted Commissioner’s Award on March 25, 2016. Husser attended a Regional Conference at Lake Lanier, where the award was announced. Husser was chosen from a pool of professsionals nominated by their peers. Beginning March 15 at 5:30pm, the Club will meet at Velo Vineyard every Tuesday There is a 1 mile course, 3 mile course & 5 mile course from which to choose. Local Government Grants & Loans Support from USDA Business and Industry Guaranteed Loans are available to help new and existing businesses based in rural areas gain access to affordable capital, USDA provides guarantees on loans made by private lenders. By issuing a guarantee, USDA essentially co-signs the loan with the loan recipient, lowering the lender's risk and allowing for more favorable interest rates and terms. Loans can be used for a wide variety of business activities, including: • • • • Business conversion, expansion, repair, modernization, or development; Purchase and development of land, easements, rights-of-way, buildings or facilities; Purchase of equipment, leasehold improvements, machinery, supplies, or inventory; Working capital and debt refinancing. Maximum Award Available: $10 million, with some exceptions allowing up to $40 million. Funding Agency: Rural Development Community Facilities Grants and Loans support rural communities by providing loans and grants for the construction, acquisition, or renovation of community facilities or for the purchase of equipment for community facilities. Projects that support local and regional food systems that may qualify for CF funding include, but are not limited to, the following: • • • • • Farmers markets (i.e. structures); School and community kitchens; Food banks, including refrigerators; Community gardens (i.e., purchase land; water source access) and noncommercial greenhouses; Refrigerated trucks. Maximum Award Available: Varies by project, applicant's financial feasibility, and community size. Funding Agency: Rural Development Rural Business Enterprise and Opportunity Grants There are two types of grants available. Enterprise grants funds projects that facilitate the development of small and emerging rural businesses, distance learning networks, and employment-related adult education programs. Opportunity grants support training and technical assistance for business development and to assist with regional economic development planning. For enterprise grants, possible uses include: • • • • • • • o o o o Acquisition or development of land; Construction, conversion, or renovation of buildings; Purchase of machinery and equipment, including refrigerators and processing equipment; Capitalization of revolving loan funds; Provision of training and technical assistance (unless related to agricultural production); Project planning. For opportunity grants, possible uses include: Regional economic planning focused on food system development; Market development and feasibility studies; Business training, including leadership development and technical assistance for entrepreneurs; Establishing business incubators, including commercial kitchens. Maximum Award Available: Varies; generally no higher than $500,000.
