an all team training in October. Employees listened
to Mr. Miles explain his expectations for team
members followed by a presentation from the

Greetings from the Handicap
Committee…
Instructor’s Corner
We are very excited to wow your juniors that will be visiting for the
holidays. We are hosting the HOLIDAY JUNIOR GOLF EXTRAVAGANZA
with 4 dates/sessions offered. The dates will be December 22nd and
23rd and the following week December 29th and 30th. The times each
day will be from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. on the back of the Marsh practice
range. We will meet at the patio by the golf shop and shuttle the juniors
to the designated area, then back to the golf shop patio for pick up. We
will cover a lot of areas of the games FUNdamentals. The main focus will
be for your juniors to have a BLAST while they learn the best game ever.
THE FIELD WILL BE LIMITED so we can keep the student/teacher ratio at
a comfortable number.
….to Bonita Bay’s full-time residents and
those returning to the sunny south!
As we launch into another active season on the links, the
Committee, as advised by the USGA, would like to remind
golfers of the handicapping policies at Bonita Bay.
1. Play by the rules | There are great booklets available that
summarize key rules and situations. Apps are also available
for your smart phones at www.usga.org/mobile. You can
also always access the information online at www.usga.
org/Rules. Bottom line, golf is about enjoying the sport on
a level playing field; the Handicap Committee is committed
to this philosophy.
2. Post every round | Scores can be conveniently posted at:
Cost - $40 per junior per session (2 hours)
ºº The GHIN terminals in the golf shop and locker rooms
We do have a few sets of complimentary junior rental clubs if your
junior needs some clubs.

CHIPPING AND PITCHING
Jeff Heilman will be offering Chipping and Pitching short game clinics
each Monday at the Marsh short game area through May 2015 from
12:00-1:00 to the first 3 golfers to register by calling the golf shop. Cost
is $50 for the hour of instruction.
MIZUNO WEDGE FITTING DAY
We will be hosting a Mizuno Wedge Fitting Day on January 8th, this
will be an amazing time to learn why we can blame many of your short
game faults on your equipment. Michael Spurr will be doing the fitting.
Jonathan Sutera will be doing the wedge education for your simple
understanding. This program is for both Women and Gentlemen. The
cost for the 2 hours will be $135 and will include a custom wedge of your
choice. (Worth $120) We do need you to sign up by e-mailing Jonathan
or Michael for your participation. [email protected] or
[email protected]
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and family!
We will be available through the Christmas holiday to give you and your
family instruction for their enjoyment.
Thanks for your support and allowing us to help you love the game we love!
Sincerely,
Jonathan Sutera
Director of Instruction

• Click on “Post Scores”
• Enter your GHIN number and last name
3. Post promptly | The USGA advises that scores should be
posted as soon as possible after play to ensure the integrity
of the handicapping system
4. Post correctly | Ensure that you’ve counted all your strokes
accurately per USGA rules (which defines “ESC” and “Most
Likely” scoring), that you post the correct date, course and
tees.
5. Participate in peer review | A level playing field requires
the co-operation of all golfers. With golfer posting records
available through GHIN and awareness through playing
golf with others, it’s our responsibility to advise golfers of
deliberate or unwitting breaches of rules, including those
that affect handicaps. The Handicap Committee will always
use the strictest of confidence when dealing with issues,
and will follow all USGA protocol for resolution.
The Handicap Committee is here to assist the membership in
any way possible. Our goal is to make sure that those members
that compete in Club Tournaments or within their own group
can do so in an equitable manner.

American Bald Eagle Update
Our eagle pair have returned to Creekside
Course on the sixth hole and are busy
rebuilding their nest. Lots of action to be
observed. Flying in with branches and
moss to fill in the spaces and make a
safe nesting for their new eaglet. At this
time we do not know when or if we will
be lucky to have a new eaglet so it is a
wait and see situation!

The “Bounce-Hit” Theory
Holly
Chomyn
For those who have trouble watching the ball all the way to
their racquet or have trouble timing the ball, the bounce-hit
technique is very helpful.
USPTA Master Professional
USTA High Performance Coach
Say to yourself “bounce” when the ball bounces on the court.
Say to yourself “hit” when you make contact with the ball.
Benefits:
1. This will help you focus on the ball from the bounce to the hit which is when most players tend to look away
from the ball to see where they want to hit the ball or what their opponents are doing.
2. It gives you something very specific to focus on instead of just saying “watch the ball” over and over.
3. It helps with timing, especially when there is a chance of pace and/or spin on each shot.
4. It also helps to keep your focus during the point instead of letting your mind wander.
Mike
Mulligan
For a solid service return, use your forward momentum.
PGA Elite Tennis Professional
Step 1: S et your ready position with your knees bent,
like Ed Burke shows in figure 1.
Step 2: A
s Ed takes his racquet back, about 80% of his
weight is ready on his right leg so he can use
the ground to push his body forward.
Step 3: A
s Ed hits the ball, he steps forward with both
feet (left foot first, then right foot) so that his
body moves forward (which takes pressure off
Ed’s hitting arm).
See you on the courts!
Mike Mulligan
STEP 1
STEP 2
There is Power In The Strings
STEP 3
Jamie
We all want a little more power in our tennis games, but how can we get it? Most of the
Stevenson
power we generate comes from our swing speed and our racquet mass, but what about
USRSA Master Racquet Technician
our strings?
The simple answer is, yes. But what kinds of strings give us the most power in our game?
All strings have a resiliency rating, which measures the strings ability to stretch and
rebound to its original position. The higher the rating, the more powerful the string.
PTR Certified Instructor
Here is a quick overview:
#1 Natural Gut. The best for power, for control, and for your arm.
Everything else is fighting for 2nd place!
#2 Multi-Filament synthetic gut. Great rebound, good control,
good for your arm and less costly than gut.
#3 Solid Core synthetic gut. More durable than a multi, and most economical.
#4 Polyester. Great durability but very little rebound so very little power. All power must be generated by the player.
Harshest on the arm.

Jamie was certified by the PTR as an instructor this
summer. He has completed quite a journey, just
learning tennis only 9 years ago, when he started
at Bonita Bay Club. He is now playing tennis at the
4.0+ level and has been working with Paula and
others to develop an understanding of teaching
methods and strategies. “Jamie is a great team
player and I am especially proud of his professional
growth and development”, replied Paula. “We are
very fortunate in that this doesn’t take anything
away from Jamie’s current job, but adds to it. We
have the ability to meet additional member needs,

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Gie is passionate about golf but says that Fitness is coming on strong. He used to
view it as a drudgery that he had to do, but now that he is in better shape, it’s fun
for him. He looks forward to each class or function no matter how hard it is. “Gie
came in with a really bad back and hip,” says Erica Hemmer, Personal Trainer and TPI
Certified Golf Fitness Professionals, “his tendency was to push himself despite his
pain which resulted in a lot of compensation. Now, he still works hard, but he has a
good understanding of what his body can do and what it takes to keep him there.”
Gie participates in or has participated in a variety of classes and programs offered
by the Fitness Center including Personal Training, Healthy Back class, TPI, Pilates,
Gyrotonic ®, and Core Performance for Golf. He also takes weekly massage with one
of our therapists. He admits that he was slow to appreciate the benefits of massage
but feels that it eases the kinks out of his muscles and allows him to participate in
more golf games and practice longer than he would’ve imagined.
George “Gie” Morgan
“Personal Training is an expense that you might not think is worth it, but Cathleen
and I look at it as an investment in my health- now and for the future.”

A MAKEOVER ON SOME CLASSIC HOLIDAY DISHES
Monday, December 8th, 11:15 am., Cost: $10
What’s a holiday feast without a turkey or a roast with all the trimmings?
Indeed, that’s what we love about the holidays- all that rich, satisfying
food we don’t often get. We load up the dinner plates with our favorites
then go back for more. Trouble is, those foods are usually high in calories
and full of fat. And, that can stir up a bad case of heartburn and pack on
the pounds!
Registered Dietician and Diabetes Educator, Betsy Opyt will show you how
to turn some of those classic holiday dishes into healthier versions of your
favorites. She will also give you recipes for her favorite holiday dishes.

First Comes Mobility… Then Comes Power
The secret to playing better while minimizing your risk of injury or pain
A goal of every golfer is to hit the ball further… consistently. And most
golfers recognize the role of the Golf Professional in helping them
achieve these results but now, the best golfers in the world recognize
that fitness also plays a major role in improving fitness and avoiding
injury. They also recognize that fitness is more than just building
strength and power although this has been a starting point for many
over the years. However, being “fit for golf” means having all seven
components of physical fitness including mobility, stability, motor
control, strength, power, and cardiovascular endurance, and any good
fitness program will screen for limitations or deficiencies in these areas.
Getting started… We start every TPI Golf Fitness program with a movement screen to identify issues with mobility, stability,
and motor control issues. TPI Certified Golf Fitness Professional Erica Hemmer says, “If you don’t test, it’s just a guess.” By performing
a series of tests, our TPI Certified Fitness Professionals will identify limitations and areas of weakness so we can build a customized
program based on the golfer’s specific needs and it is a way to monitor progress.
The program… We always address mobility and stability issues before we get to strength and power because of the potential
for injury. “Sometimes people get frustrated when I start them with these basic exercises because they want to jump right into the
hard stuff,” says Erica, “but you have to address mobility first and try to correct dysfunctional movement patterns or they could
get hurt. Adding resistance to bad movement patterns will only reinforce compensatory movements.”For maximum results, golfers
should perform corrective exercises daily. “When you do this, you will see results and we can progress you to more challenging
exercises,” says Tammy Mugavero, TPI Certified Golf Fitness Professional, “but the corrective exercises build the platform for
strength and power.” We should note however that this is not an all or none thing. You can work on strength and power in areas
that are not limited while doing corrective exercises for those that are.
From Function to Strength and Then From Strength to Power… Once the golfer has cleaned up any faulty
movement patterns or limitations in mobility, we begin strengthening the movement patterns. Golfers will undergo a strength
and power assessment to identify issues with respect to balance in strength from right to left and front to back and to establish a
baseline for determining progress. Exercises in this phase will build a base for the power exercises that come next. Once they have
developed sufficient strength in a movement, you can start to add speed to the movements. Basically, the strength of a muscle
allows the golfer to deliver force, but how fast you can deliver that force in the right direction is power, and that is the ultimate
goal!
For more information on Golf Fitness Training, please contact the Fitness Center to speak with one of our
TPI Certified Golf Fitness Professionals.

1 ½ cups ice
1 to 1 ½ cups almond milk

add ice. The more ice, the thicker it gets. Blend
slowly at first to get good consistency then speed
it up for about 30 seconds. Feel free to use any

The Vine
I speak for the entire staff when I share in my excitement for the fast-approaching 2015
Season. A robust array of wine offerings await your palate at Bonita Bay Club. Our Wine Lists
boasts over 280 selections from ever-popular to lesser-discovered growing regions. We have
enhanced our collections of the most popular varietals, emphasizing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir,
and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Those who don’t wish to commit to a bottle certainly won’t miss out on enjoying great wine.
We also feature over thirty wines available by the glass as either a six or nine ounce pour.
This now includes six new Ultra-Premium Wines. These high-end selections are dispensed
using our new, state-of-the-art Coravin Wine System. This preservation system uses a surgicalgrade needle to dispense wine through the cork and pressurize the bottle with Argon gas. This
preserves the wine from oxidation, pouring the last glass with the same freshness as the first.
We look forward to hosting our monthly Wine Dinners in the Fireside Room beginning January 15th. Kicking off the
season will be the Wagner Family of Wines. This exclusive event celebrates the 40th anniversary of Caymus Vineyards
and will also showcase the fantastic wines of Mer Soleil, Emmolo, and Belle Glos. These wines will be thoughtfully
paired to Chef Richard’s gourmet menu.
Cheers!
Joseph
New Fireside Concept
Fireside will host Wine Dinners and new Gourmet Dinners
which will alternate every other week. Wine Dinners are
scheduled for the third Thursday of January, February, March
and April and feature a hand-selected winery along with a
beautifully paired menu. Gourmet Dinners will occur the
first Thursday of February, March and April and feature a
multi-course gourmet menu with a choice of entrees. These
exclusive events are sure to book quickly so be sure to make
your reservations in plenty of time. Based upon member usage
and feedback, the frequency of scheduled Fireside dinners will
be adjusted accordingly.

Expanded Clubroom
à la Carte
This season the Clubroom offers a vastly expanded a
la carte program. Committing to more a la carte dining
nights in the Clubroom has enabled the culinary team to
nearly double the amount of menu offerings. Among these
great choices are freshly prepared features that change
on a weekly basis. The a la carte dining schedule will also
extend to include Saturday and Sunday nights, beginning
in January, and feature tableside Dover Sole on Saturday
Night and Fried Chicken on Sunday Night.
