President's P a g e ' - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dear AGS Members and Arkansas Researchers:
Once again it my privilege to welcome you to the
pages of The Arkansas Family His/orian.
The Summer research season is over and it is my
sincere wish that you got to vislt all of the courthouses, archives, libraries and family cemeteries
that were on your "must do" list.
One of the great attractions of the Fall season in
Arkansas is our annual AGS Genealogical Workshop. This year is no exception. The dates are
November 12 and 13, and the featured speaker will
be nationally known lecturer Elizabeth Shown Mills.
Her topic will be "Genealogical Problem Solving."
For full details write to our Vice President, Joe
Goss, P. O. Box 1623, Conway, AR 72032. Registration information is contained in the June, 1993,
issue oIThe AFH, as well as this issue.
Arkansas Civil War Records
An analysis of recent letters received by both AGS
and the Arkansas History Commission in Little
Rock shows that the most frequenlly requested
type of Arkansas record from out-of-state researchers is information on possible Arkansas Civil
War soldiers. This is understandable, since over
80,000 men from Arkansas served in the Confederate Army; some 11 ,000 wMe Arkansans fought in
the Union Army; and several thousand black men
served in Union units raised in Arkansas. A little
known fact about these Arkansas CiVil War soldiers
is that as many as two or three thousand white
troops served in both the Union and the Confederate armies. Also, many Confederate soldiers from
this state served in more than one CSA unit during
the course of the war. For many years, the only
access to these Arkansas records was through the
indexes prepared by the old War Department
before 1905 and later microfilmed by the National
Archives,
There is no separate index to Arkansas Black Union
Troops. However, in the last few years, complete
indexes to white Arkansas Union and Confederate
soldiers has been published by AGS member
Desmond Walls Allen, P. O. Box 303, Conway, AR
72032. Write her for more information.
Copies of Arkansas service records can be obtained from the Arkansas History CommiSSion, One
Capitol Mall, Litlle Rock. AR 72201, for $10.00 each.
They may also be ordered from the National Archives, Washington, DC 20408, on a NATF Form
80. Copies of records of black Union soldiers can
only be obtained from the National Archives.
Arkansas CSA records are usually very skimpy and
many have been lost altogether. Often soldiers are
listed only by their initials.
Beginning in 1892, Over 22,000 Confederate veterans and widows received pensions from the State
Of Arkansas. There are currently two indexes to
these records in print. One is by Ms. Allen in
Conway, and the other by F. T. Ingmire, 211
Downshire, San Antonio, TX 78216. Write for prices.
Copies of the pension records themselves are
available from the Arkansas History Commission in
Litlle Rock. The price is $10.00 per file. All men
who received pensions from the Federal Government between 1861 and 1834 are listed in the
General Index to U. S. Pension Files. Get copies of
Union pensions from the National Archives in
Washington,
Good luck with. your Fall research projects.

An Open Letter to Funeral Home Directors in Arkansas:
Remember the cliche, "when life gives you lemons, m<\lie lemonade"? The Arkansas
It announced its new obituary policy,
The obituaries we were accustomed to are a thing of the past, but relatives of deceased loved
ones now have an important opportunity to establish a lasting reminder of their family
member.
Democrat-Gazette handed us lemons on May 23, when
Under the Arkansas Democrat-Gazelte's former obituary policy, only a limited list of facts
about the deceased could be submitted for publication, Now, family members have much more
freedom to say what they think is important. Yes, they'll have to pay for the privilege, but we
hope you, as counselors in a stressful situation, will help them understand the lasting
importance of a well-written obituary, Please ask the family to go beyond the free, fifty words
and really tell us about the person they've lost.
Instead of just a list of survivors and notice of the time and place of the service, an obituary
can tell about the ancestors of a loved one, It can mention place of birth, schools and colleges,
military service, civic organizations, fraternal groups, hobbies, career choices, previolls places
of residence, and other things that were important to the deceased.
Years from now, someone may be looking for information about the deceased and a
well-written, detailed obituary will make that person live again. Newspapers seel11 like an
impermanent medium, but most are systematically microfilmed and will be available to future
researchers. William Woodruff's words printed in 1819 in The ArkaNsas Gazme are there for
us to read tad a y,
\'vb know in today's difficult financial times, it's tempting for your clients to reduce expenses
whenever possible, but please stress the importance of a detailed newspaper obituary, We
know helping loved ones write an obituary is a free service you provide and we would like to
ask you to share our thoughts with your clients on this subject. Please explain that while the
newspaper makes money on obituaries longer than fifty words, it does provide the opportunity
to ensure a permanent record of a loved one's hfe,
Thank you for looking at the future with us.

Congratulations to the following people for participating in Arkansas Genealogical Society's Certificates of Arkansas Ancestry program! Those listed
below have been issued certificates since publication of the March issue of The Arkansas Family
Historian. The name of the ancestor, county of
residence, and earliest year of residency are listed
with the submitter's name. Check this list for potential cousins and write if you share a family line. If
you have an ancestor who lived in one of the counties mentioned in the same lime period, 'Nhy nol
write and ask about the sources for information the
submitter used?
How about your certificate? If your ancestor lived in
Arkansas before 31 December 1900, you're eligible
for a certificate. If you've already requested an
application form, pull it out of that pile of things you
meant to do, and get started. If you need an application form, send the $.52 postage needed to get
the form to you, to me, Desmond Walls Allen, AGS
Certificate chairman, 99 Lawrence Landing Road,
Conway, AR 72032. (Application forms may be
photocopied.) The application form asks for your
lineage back to your Arkansas ancestor, a group
sheet on the ancestor's family, and a photocopy of
a document proving the ancestor lived In Arkansas,
The application Isn't as difficult as a lineage socle·
ty's requirements, but it does ask you to list your
sources on the lineage and family group sheet.
Application forms are free (except for the 520
postage). Cost for the certificate is $10,00, payable
when the application form Is submitted. We started
this program to collect information on Arkansas
families and you all are doing a wonderful job of
documenting your Arkansas lines, The program
has no ending date, but we encourage you to go
ahead and get your information together now!

Submitted by David Campbell-Stevenson Lynx, 8320 Lake City Way NE, No. 308, Seattle. WA 98115
William Wilson Stevenson was born in the Pendleton District of South Carolina on January 29, 1797.
His father, James Graham Stevenson, waf born in
the M!cklenburg District, North Carolina, July 14,
1774. His mother, Jane WilSO~, was a native 01
Chester District, South Carolina, born about 1773.
Other children of James and Jane include John (b.

Janette "Jane" Stevenson (b. Dec. 1800), and

children traveled in 1811 to Lawrence County,
Missouri Territory, at the site where the town 01
Powhatan is now 10cated.7 In 1818, George Reed
sold their land and the family settled near Batesville, in what would become Independence Count~
in an area that was then called Oil Trough Bottom.
Jane (Wilson Stevenson) Reed died 6/1/1838 in
Washington County,9 at the home of her son
Samuel.
William Wilson Stevenson was educated at Columbia College, Mir8ouri, as a Cumberland Presbyterian Evangelist.
In 1824 was the first mention of
him as a candidate to be ordained by the Arkansas
Presbytery, and in September of 1~26 received an
affidavit as an ordained minister, 1 the first ordained by the Arkansas Presbytery. He married
Ruana Trimble of Batesville in 1821, who was the
mother Of::1~ sons: James Trimble (b. 6/3/1822-d.
1O/11/1894(
and John C.
(b. abt 1824-d.
11/2/1851. 3 Ruana died on 11/27/1824.14 After
the death of his wife, W. W. Stevenson moved to
Little Rock.
It was in 1824 that a Baptist preacher, Silas T.
Toncray, moved to Little Rock. He was the brother
of Maria Toncray Watkins (b. 5/13f1793-d.
3/21/1874), wife of Major Isaac Watkins. 5 The
Watkins home was the scene of the organization of
the first church in Little Rock, which was of the
Baptist denomination, on Saturday, July 24,
1824. 16 The following charter members are on
record: Silas Tracy Toncray, Isaac Watkins, Wright
Daniel, Orpha Hansbrough Toncray (wife of 1i1as),
Maria Toncray Watkins, and Martha Pyeatt. 1 By
1825, the Baptist church had a membership of
twelve and the group built a hewed-log church
building on the south side of Mulberry (now Third
Street) between Main and Scott Streets.
On the 13th of December, 1827, Major Isaac Watkins was murdered, and Maria was left with two
children, George Claiborne (b. 11/25/1815) and
Mary EliZa Watkins, (b. 1827 and later married
Joseph Clendenin).18 Another child had been
born to them, Henry Conway (b. 8/20/1822-d.
10/20/1822) but had died quite young. In 1829,
Maria's brother, Daniel Toncray, also a Baptist
preacher, died in Memphis, and Silas was called
away, giving up his pastorate of the Baptist church.
The congregation kept the church going for four
years after Silas Toncray left its pulpit, though It
didn't have a regular pastor. 19 On March 29, 1831,
Maria Watkins and William Wilson Stevenson were
married in Little Rock by Rev. James Wilson Moore.
In 1832, Rev. Benjamin F. Hall of Kentucky, a leader
in the Campbellite Reformation movement, visited
Little Rock and I(:as allowed to hold services at the
Baptist Church. 0 On July 4, 1832, the members of
the original Baptist congregation met "for the
purpose of renouncing their creed" and adopted
resolutions which included the name "Christian as
being the only legitimate and lawtul name for the
Disciples of Christ." The following were enrolled as
members of the First Christian Church 01 Little
Rock: lsaish Palmer, Letitia Niel, William Wilson
Stevenson, Mary Wilson, Sarah Caldwell, Patsy
Pyeatt, Christiana Cobb, Catherine Palmer, Pratt
Collins, and Eli Fletcher. Mr. Hall remained with the
church six months and there wfs a congregation of
eighty members when he left. 2
In a letter dated Sept 11, 1837. from his brother
Samuel's house in Washington County to Maria W.
W. Stevenson speaks of the prejudice towards him
and his change in beliefs:
I find the most deep-rooted prejudice against
me here on the subject of religion. By some I
am pitied, by others hated, and by none
respected as a Christian. Brother Samuel,
although in every other thing one of the best
disposed men perhaps living, cannot speak of

my change with any degree of composure.
Mother is a little better ... James is free from
prejudice and inclined to embrace the truth,22
On July 21, 1832, William Wilson Stevenson was
asked to serve as pastor, He served as pastor of
the First Church from 1832 to 1849. For several
years, Dr, Stevenson held evangelistic services
throughgut the state, but never preached lor a
salary.2 However, the members were very liberal
in their voluntary donations. He was also active in
many civic organizations: on May 16, 1837, he was
elected a vice-president 01 the lirst Arkansas Antiquarian Association, and on January 5, 1842,
became president 01 the Antiquarian and Historical
Association, 01 which Judge George C, Watkins
was secretary, William E. Woodruff, Sr., treasurer,
and Dr. Alden Sprague, libr~lan, He presided over
a meeting Oct. 12, 1835, 4 which asked for a
charter lor the town of Uttle Rock in the Territorial
Legislature, and was a member gl the committee
chosen to draft the city charter. 2 W, W. Stevenson was nominated for the !lrst mayor of the cijy,
but in his letter to the Gazette, dated November 10,
1835, he declines as follows:
Mr, Woodruff:
Sir: since my name has been named several
times for the mayor of Uttle Rock I have
declined my consent that it may be used on
Wednesday nexl. My thanks are tendered to
those gentlemen who showed their partiality
lor me in solicUing my name.
Respectfully,
w. W. Stevenson 26
In 1838 the office of Commissioner 01 Public Buildings was left vacant by the resignation of Samuel H.
Hempstead, and the governor appointed William
W. Stevenson fn July 31, 1839, to finish out the
expired term. 2 He had charge of the Old State
House, and was responsible for planting many of
the trees. In 1836, W. W. Stevenson made entry of
land in Township No.2 North, Range 12 West, at
the U. S. Land Office in Little Rock. 28 This has
always been known as Clendenin Hills,29 or Clendenin's Addition to North Little Rock, which he later
conveyed to hi§ wife's daughter, Mary Eliza Walkins Clendenin. 0 He laler secured title by grant
and purchased the Stevenson Addition to Little

was elected captain, Henry Keats first lieutenant,
James Murphy second lieutenant, Aldon M.

Stevenson geologist 4 The Little Rock Company
marched to Fort Smith, and on April 16, 1849, traveled over the Southern Route to CaIHornla. They
arrived in San Francisco in September of 1849. Dr,
W. W, Stevenson first located at Stock1on, which at
the time was one of the chief supply towns for the
mining camps of Mari~osa, Hornitos, Indian Gulch
and M9kelumne Hill4

William Wilson Stevenson began 10 associate
himself with the Disciples of Christ in California.
Author E. B. Ware writes:
The church at Stockton had been organized
by Father Thompson as early as 1851, possibly earlier. Stephenson at once took his
natural position as counselor and co·operator
with Thompson and McCorkle... ln the early
history of the Disciples' movement, Stevenson
had come to us from the Presbyterians, in the

but she declined. He was in poor heaith when

back there.
Robert Watkins Stevenson married Mattie (Martha)
Jane Peachy (b. 4/5/1832-d. 1/2/1892) in Stockton
on January 20, 1856. Several children were born in
Stockton, including John Charles (b. 2/16/1857-d.
11/9/1882). Minnie Maria (b. 7/3/1858-d. 8/2/1859),
and later twins Robert Peachy (b. 7/21/1868-d.
1/14/1946) and Allen Toncray (b. 7/21/1868-d.
12/16/1895). In a diary at the Arkansas History
Commission. W. W. Stevenson writes:

Robert served as sheriff of Calaveras County, Cali-
fornla. from 1867 to 1872 and moved back to
Arkansas In 1874. Robert Watkins and Mattie
Peachy Stevenson are burled in Mount Holly
Cemetery.
In 1858 the Disciples of Christ decided to start their
first state paper in California. and W. W. Stevenson
was selected to edit II. The "Western Evangelist"
was launched with W.
Steveng?n as editor and
J. N. Pendegast associate editor.
He was called
to work in San Francisco, where he preached for
the church and edited the Western Evangelist.
There he married a niece and adopted daughter of
the elder of the San Francisco church, Charles
Vincent. E. B. Ware writes:
w.
It was the mistake of his life. but that there
was anything criminal or immoral about it. as
charged, was a gross misrepresentation of
the facts, openly and positively asserted to
me by them, and others in my presence.
Vincent was incensed. The San Francisco
church at that time was dominated by him.
Stevenson and his young wife were summarily expelled from the church, ...
W. W. Stevenson and his wife moved to Santa
Clara. The 1870 census of Santa Clara Township
shows William W. Stevenson, Clergyman of the
Chris. Church. at 73 years, with wife Helen (29),
William (6), Mattie (4). Oscar (1). And the 1880
census with W. W. (83), H. R. (37), William (16),
Mattie (13), Oscar (10), Nellie (9) and Nettle (9).
Helen is shown as her birthplace of Norway, and
the children all of California. Whether Rev. W. W.
Stevenson is the father of all five is unknown, but
three are referred to by E. B. Ware:
Their first child was a boy. Oscar; the next
were two girls, twins. The old Doctor was
sitting in the room when the nurse brought in
one of the little girl babies, all dressed, and
laid it in his lap. After a lillie while she brought
in another and passed it over to the Doctor.
He looked up at her in an anXio~s mood, and
dryly said: "Did any get away[?]" 2
Marla (T oncray) (Watkins) Stevenson died on the
21 st of March 1874, at the residence of her son-inlaw, Judge John J. Clendenin. She is buried in
Mount Holly Cemetery as Maria Watkins, next to
her former husband, Isaac Watkins. No mention Is
made of the name Stevenson.

The Rev. Dr. W. W. Stevenson died in Santa Clara
on November 10, 1886. His obituary in The Daily
Herald, San Jose, California, on November 12,
1886, read as follows:
Dr. W. W. Stephenson, an old and highly
respectable resident of this county, died at his
residence in Santa Clara, on Wednesday last.
He was one of the band of argonauts who
crossed the plains in the early days, arriving in
September, 1849. He was pastor of the
Church of the Advent at Santa Clara for
several years. He was a native of South
Carolina, and at the time of his death had
reached the age of 90 years. His wife and five
grown children survive him. The funeral took
place yesterday afternoon from the Christian
chapel and was largely attended by friends
and relatives. The remains were interred in
the Santa Clara cemetery.
The Mission City cemetery no longer has the head
stones, but shows William Wilson Stevenson (29
Jan 1797-16 Sept 1886, 89 Y 1am) buried with
Helen Radison Stevenson (b, 1843, d. 5 Dec.
1887).53

By Shirley J. Young. 400 N. University #202. Little Rock. AR 72205
Following the discovery of the American continent,
explorers for the European nations began claiming
large areas in the names of their mother countries.
England attempted to establish settlements in its
middle portion of the North American continent and
was finally successful in establishing its first
permanent settlement in the Province of Virginia on
th.:l James River in 1607. Then began a flood of
immigration which lasted well into the eighteenth
century. Many of these immigrants came from
middle and western Europe composed principally
of people from England, Germany and Holland.
Among them were four brothers from the Palatinate
of Germany, Casper, John, George and Jacob,
sons of Hans Georg Hoffman. John and Casper
landed in Philadelphia 24 Sep 1751, having been
enroute from Europe several months. They proceeded to Berks County. Pennsylvania, where they
found relatives, but soon moved on into Shenandoah County. Virginia, to join their brother, George,
who had come over in 1749. The next Spring, 1752,
Casper took his family back to Berks County,
Pennsylvania. while John and George joined the
migration to North Carolina. settling in the Great
Alamance section in Orange County. 1 In 1765
George and his family followed the German, Dutch,
and Scotch migration through the Yadkin River
Valley and into the Catawba River Valley. They
crossed the Catawba River and went some eight
miles to the headwaters of Clark's Creek. This location is about two miles west of the town of Conover
and was then in Mecklenberg County. After several
divisions, the land where they permanently settled
finally became part of Catawba County. There they
literally cleared their land out of the wilderness and
built their homestead where G~rge died in 1794
and his wife, Catherina, in 1787.
Jacob, the lourth brother, remained in Germany
until 1768 when he, his wife Catherina, and their
four youngest children emigrated to America,
taking the same path as his brothers through Berks
County. Pennsylvania, then to Shenandoah Coun,
ty, Virginia. They remained in Virginia until 1776,
moving on to South Fork River valley in North
Carolina. They acquired land near the mouth of Big
Long Creek in Gaston County, about sixteen miles
below where his brother, George, had settled
eleven years earlier.
George and Catherina Rein Hoffman, the Arkansas
County ancestors, had five children: Martin, Bgltzar
(Balthazar). Samuel, Catherine, and Elizabeth,
Samuel, the great grandfather of the Arkansas
Huffmans, was two when he made the trip to
America with his parents. Twenty-nine years later,
in 177B, he married Barbara Moser and they moved
to a remote area of Burke County where they
purchased land, cleared it and built a log house. He
died in 1BID. He and Barbara had ten children: Eva,
Mary, Abram, Frederick, Burke, Casper (Jasper),
Catherin2 (Katy) , Barbara, Elizabeth (Belly) and
Michael.
Casper remained in Burke County and some of his
descendants are still there. On the third Sunday 01
each September a family reunion is held at SI.
John's Baptist Church located approximately 15-20
miles south of Morganton. Many local descendants
and a few Visiting descendants from other states
were at the 1992 Reunion. The church cemetery is
filled with Huffman ancestors and is well tended.
Frederick Huffman (or Hoffman, depending on your
preference), the Arkansas County ancestor, was
born in 1784 in Burke County. He married Fanny
Warlick, who was raised by a Mr. Hildebrand and
was sometimes referred to as Fanny Hildebrand. In
1642 at age 56 Frederick moved his family to land
that eventually became Jackson County after
several county line revisions. He and Fanny had
nine children: Marion, Ransom, Alus, Ma~
Michael, Samuel, Henry, Minerva, and Sophronia
(later referred to as Froney). His son, Samuel, is the
ancestor who took his family and moved to Missouri and is the Samuel Pearson Carson Huffman
addressed in the letters later referred to in this anicle.
In spne of the statement on page 79 of the book,
The Hoffmans of North CarOlina, to the effect that
this Samuel "served In the war, returned and then
went to Missouri," by 1850 Samuel Pearson Carson
Huffman and his wife, Henrietta. were already in
Missouri. 6 Clues to their journey and stops of
several years duration along the way are reflected
in two microfilm rolls 01 Huffman Papers at the

Little Rock, Arkansas 72201, containing numerous
letters received by Samuel and Henrietta, receipts,
deeds, wills, etc., from two collections. References
are also made to letters, newspaper clippings,
obituaries, etc., now in my possession and to additional letters and other papers presently in the
possession of Imogene Partridge 10. Samuel's
deferment from service in the war between the
states dated August 2nd, 1862, bearing an address
of Headquarters, Warsaw, Mo" is included in these
latest discoveries and they will be placed on microfilm at the Arkansas History Commission at a later
date. In that deferment Samuel is described as "a
resident of Hickory County, Missouri (38 years old,
6 feet high, fair complexion, blue eyes, auburn
hair)" and the Assistant Surgeon, J. S. Smitt, 8
Reg'!. calvary Mo. 5 NP, who signed this deferment, states that "Samuel P. C. Huffman, (the
bearer of this paper) * * * has been examined by
me and found to be physically unable to perform
military duty - old sore of left leg."
The microfilm rolls begin with a letter dated 20 Sep
1850 from F. Huffman and Fanny Huffman to
Samuel Huffman, with the salutation, "Dear Son
and Daughter." Then in later correspondence?
dated 27 Nov 1867 Samuel's father signed the
name "Frederick," not at thattimg signing for Fanny
but instead stating that "Froney" was still with him.
This, of course, has to be Sophronia, Frederick and
Fanny's youngest child and Samuel's youngest
sister. Numerous Huffman relatives are mentioned
In the microfilmed pepers, including three brothers,
Michael, Henry and Marion.
Samuel's wife was Henrietta Payne, the daughter of
Abner and Catharine Sherrill Payne, Catharine's
perents were Jacob Sherrill, born 20 Mar 1749,
died 8 Mar 1831, and Sallie Massey. According to
Abner Payne's (Henrietta's father) will dated 21 Oct
1843 and recorded 28 Oct 1845, Henrietta had five
sisters and four brothers, to-wit: J. F. Payne, A. B.
Payne, W. D. Payne, J. A. Payne, Margaret Payne,
Sarah Payne Duncan, Rachel Payne Hayes,
Rebecca Payne (Sherrill), and Elizabeth Payne
(Flowers). Much of the correspondence in this
collection is from Henrietta's brothers, sisters,
brothers-in-law and sisters-In-law.
Nearly all 01 these letters commence with a rather
lengthy recognition of God's blessings, comments
on their state of health and well wishes for the
person addressed, and many of the letters refer to
the friends (emphasis supplied) indicating a pass i-

bre Quaker influence. There was a Quaker community in the County called Quaker Meadows and
many of their descendants are still in Burke County.
Quaker Meadows is even shown on early maps of
the area. 11 Most of the early letters originate in
Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Alexander and Lincoln
Counties, North Carolina. Many of the letters describe hard times and are asking Samuel to advise
them of conditions In Missouri.
Samuel and Henrietta first settled near the community of Elkton, Missouri where they stayed until
1863. Letters during this period were addressed to
Humansville, in either Polk or Hickory County (the
county lines changed sometime during the 1850s).
Between 4 Apr 1860 and 19 May 1866 there is a sixyear gap in the correspondence, probably due to
the Civil War but we may find some correspondence in that recently discovered covering the sixyear gap.
During that period of time according to several
newspaper clippings in my possession, including
ob~uaries of some of Samuel's children, an account Is given of a small band of unattached soldiers going to the Huffman home in 1863 in the little
village of Elkton, Hickory County, Missouri, with the
intention of killing Samuel who by a ruse escaped
through the orchard to nearby timber, The next
morning Henrietta and their older children loaded
the wagon and the family made its way to Quincy
where Samuel joined them. They continued their
flight to callaway County, Missouri, settling there
where seven years later Samuel died on 1 Dec
1870. Letters during this time were addressed to
Callaway County, Missouri, to Hlberney, and to
Cedar City, Missouri.
Samuel seems to have had the knack to acquire
land and property. When he left North Carolina,
several people owed him money and the correspondence reflects efforts to collect. As late as 27
Dec 1866 he was being offered $3 per acre for his
homeplace in North Carolina. Near Elkton, Hickory
County, Missouri, he left land which he later either
sold or gave to a school district bearing the Huffman name, and this is the site of Mary Young's
return visit In 1939. Mary catherine, one of Samuel's and Henrietta's older children, married
Aquilla Tipton Young in 1874 and when the rest of
the family moved to Arkansas in 1876, she remained in Missouri. Samuel was a tanner, but
included in some of the records on microfilm is an

Hickory County dated 1 November 1860, indicating
Samuel might have been a merchant, but there is
no definite proof. He may have continued this
vocation in Callaway County because following his
death Henrietta seems to be settling accounts with
suppliers,
Ever the dreamer, as early as 1852 this correspondence indicates that Samuel planned to check out
Arkansas. In the 1860s he was also corresponding
with speculators concerning a Brazilian venture,
While he did not make the move to Arkansas, in
1876 Henrietta and eight of their nine children did,
moving to Sassafras Prairie near DeWitt, Arkansas
County, Arkansas, where she died the next year on
7 Apr 1877. Henrietta is burled in a small wooded,
overgrown cemetery about 2-1/2 miles south of
DeWitt; there is a tombstone at this time,
After Henrietta's death, the children moved to Long
Point in Arkansas County and lived there until the
spring of 1880 when they moved to what was then
known as the Jim Byers' farm approximately ten
miles south of Stuttgart As the children married,
they began to scatter, some of them to nearby
areas such as Red Hill, Sorghum Prairie, Goldman
and Sunshine,
Abner Labon Huffman, a son, married Sarah
Adamson (Sallie) Stillwell, and they had three
daughters, Mary Verna, Henrietta who died when
she was five, and my mother, Lois Catherine, Mary
Verna married Eugene Harvey and died in Nashville, Tennessee, Her only son, William Huffman
Harvey, predeceased her, dying of polio in Nashville, leaving a widow, Eda Lee Crossnoe Harvey,
and one son named Thomas William, My mother
married Herman A. Young and, although both of
them died in Little Rock, they are buried in Lone
Tree Cemetery at Stuttgart. Herman died first on 11
September 1981 and Lois died 29 June 1990, They
had three children, myself and two brothers, Paul
Abner and David Malcom. Paul married lIa Mae
Bentley of England, Arkansas, and they had three
children, Logan, Michael and Paula, David married
Mary Lulu Vaughan of near Tupelo, Arkansas, in
Jackson County, and they had two daughters: (1)
Cherie Lynn, who married and was then divorced
from Joe Pearrow of Bald Knob, Arkansas, before
she died, leaving two Children, Shane and
Misty, with their father; (2) Mary Scarlett, her husband, Richard Powell, and their two children, Betsy
and Richard, are living in Kentucky. Paul and Lyda
(one and the same as lia Mae) presently live near
Vilonia in Faulkner County; David and Mary presently live at Mineral Springs, Arkansas, where he is
a teacher. I have not married, live in Little Rock,
and have no children.
Samuel's son, Marion Lafayette (who I believe was
called Fayette, often misunderstood as "Faith"),
married Laura Duncan in 1878, and the 1880
census for Arkansas County lists a one-year old
son, Boyd. That name is incorrect - his name was
Walter Bell Huffman and he died 24 August, 1880.
They had one other son. Labon Burke Huffman
who married Jennie Shelton and they had one
daughter, Fern, Marion Lafayette's only olher child
was a girl, Jamie Elizabeth, who married Kyle
Choate. Apparently Laura Duncan Huffman and her
two children moved to Texas after Marion Lafayette
died in 1896.
One of Samuel's daughters, Annie Elizabeth, married Virgil Quertermous. Until her marriage she
taught in several schools in Arkansas County. She
attended Rutherford College in North Carolina one
or two years before her teaching career. She and
Virgil had three children: Virgil Emmett and Ada
Louise, who had no survivors, and Vesta Irene who
married Ernest E. Sampson and had eight children,
six girls and two boys,
Another of Samuel's daughters, Laura Eve, married
Henry Clay Synco and they had six children;
Imogene Synco Partridge, one of the donors of the
microfilmed malerial, is a descendant of Laura Eve
Huffman, Laura Eve's children were: Ora, Lyle and
Harold, who predeceased her, and Walter, Booker
and Kennett Synco.
Wise W. Duncan married inlo the Huffman family
twice. He first married Martha Saphronia (nicknamed Mat) and following her death, he married
her sister, Sarah Jane, Wise and Sarah Jane had
two children.
Amanda Ellen Huffman never married. She died in
her twenties, Another son, John Burke Huffman,

presumed that because of the house's location

------Columbia County, Arkansas, Ministerial Credentials
Recorded in Marriage Records
Submitted by Thelma Eldridge, 12516 S, Lowe
Ave" Chicago, IL 60628-7014, and compiled in
September, 1992
In January of this year, I was researching Columbia
County, Arkansas, marriage records with the object,ve of locating and copying my family's marriage
records, From the brief description given in the
catalog at the Local Family History Center at
Chicago Heights, Illinois, I knew thaI these credentials were included in the marriage records, Curiosity motivated me to examine the equally ,visible
ministers' credentials that were included in the
records on microfilm No, 0988808, Columbia
County, Arkansas, Marriage Records, Book B,
1866-1875, filmed by the Genealogical Society of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints of
Salt Lake City, Utah, 1976, I wanted to see if any
African American ministers had their credentials
recorded, and if they were recorded, I wanted to
see who hel ped shape the course of the institution
of the African American church in the county,
The first two African American ministers' credentials
that I examined specified their ethnicity as colored,
Other Baptist credentials did not specify ethnicity,
Since I had in my possession a 1975 centennial
anniversary program booklet of the Columbia District Missionary Baptist Association and a 1974
centennial anniversary booklet of the Bethlehem
Baptist Church, Magnolia, Arkansas, I began to
search the booklets, I found names of ministers
laymen, and churches dating back to 1867,(1)
These names provided me with some clues, As I
examined the credentials,! noticed that many of the
Baptist ministers' credentials stated their church
membership, churches represented in the council,
and names of other individuals, The non-Baptist
ministers' credentials were not difficult to identify,
The credentials stated whether the appointee was
being ordained as African Methodist Episcopal
deacon or Colored Methodist Episcopal deacon,
commonly known as AM.E. and C.M,E,
Among the African American church denominations, the Baptist had the first recorded credentials,
Peter Edwards, colored, was ordained as an
evangelist to minister to all Christians, specifically
Baptist Christians. He was able to administer the
special and common ordinances of the gospel as
stated in his credential, The centennial program
booklet of the Columbia District Missionary Baptist
Association stated that Brother Pete Edwards
served as the Moderator of those colored who were
members of the First Baptist Church of Magnolia
(while), It also stated that on the third Sunday in
May 1867, there was a special conference for
colored, and the following were received into the
church by baptism: Lucy Runyan, Amanda Sharmon, Elizabeth Collins, Viney Hayes, and Victoria
Elliott.(2) Since the records indicated that Peter
Edwards was the only colored ordained, it seemed
to me the natural thing to do was appoint Peter
Edwards as Moderator.
Peter Edwards was ordained by the white presbytery, The ordination of Armisted Daniel, the second
African American ordained, included Peter Edwards along with the white presbytery, Subsequent ordinations consisted of an African American
Council composed of messengers from various
Baptist churches, The councils usually consisted
of elders or ministers, laymen or deacons, and a
clerk, The conclusion that one could draw from the
~redentials is that the candidate was called, exam'ned, and ordained to minister or preach the gospel, administer the ordinances of marriage, baptism, and burial, and perform other duties related to
the doctrine of the gospel.
Unlike the Baptist, the AME and C,ME confer,
ences appointed a man who had been examined
and found qualified for the office of a deacon, The
first non-Baptist credential that I examined was that
of John Saly, John Saly was appointed to the
pastoral charge of the Magnolia Mission, AM.E
and C.ME ordinations appeared to have taken
place at the annual Arkansas or annual West
Arkansas Conference (AME) and the Little Rock
Conference (C,M,E,). Most of the credentials made
reference to its particular conference, and one of
the presiding bishops or one of the bishops of the
church in America sealed the credentials,(3) Their
authorizations to administer ordinances were similar to the Baptist; however, the C,ME deacons'
duties were periormed in the absence of the elder.
Below is a listing of some African American Ministers credentials found in the marriage records:(4)

Going To Salt Lake City To Do Family History Research, by J. Carlyle Parker, 1993, Second Edition
Revised and Expanded, Marietta Publishing Company, 2115 N. Denair Ave., Turlock, CA 95380 $12.95
(+ $1.50 postage), 200 pp. One 01 the ultimate research experiences for any genealogist has to be
going to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
This book is an excellent guide for making that trip
successful. It is arranged so you can prepare for your
trip if you have 3 hours or 3 months before you go. It
will help you organize your research objectives, This
book acquaints you with the layout and explains how
to use the computers and indexes. There is a chapter
devoted to "What to Take?" that also tells you what to
leave at home. Part II "When You Are There" carefully
explains the book cataloging system, talks about
etiquette for the library, lists miscellaneous services of
the library and much more. There are maps of the
library and surrounding area, plus phone numbers
and addresses of closely located motels and restaurants. For family members who don't want to research, there is a chapter on sightseeing and entertainment. This book is highly recommended for
anyone using Family History Centers locally, and a
necessity for anyone going to Salt Lake City to do
research. [LS]
Index To Obituaries And Death Reports Appearing
In The Arkansas Gazette: 1921, Oscar G.
Russell,506 Loop Rd., North Little Rock, AR 72120,
$45.00 soft cover, $60.00 hard cover. Once again Mr.
Russell has done the Arkansas research community a
real favor with another of his series of indexes to
deaths reported in the Arkansas Gazette. Although
the Gazette is no longer with us, it was one of the two
state-wide newspapers of its day. Besides the usual
name, address, date, page, etc., information in this
Reviews and Notices
volume, the author has included an index to places of
death both in state and out of state. Without this
index a researcher might miss the two obituaries
published for a resident of Womble, in Montgomery
County, Oasy Martin BurkhartiBurkhardt, on January
t5 and January 16,1921. Keep upthe good work, Mr.
Russell. [RPB]
A, K, A, (Also Known As), by Sandi Garrett, P. O.
Box 48, Spavinaw, OK 74366, price $15.00, which
includes shipping, etc. One of today's hottest genealogical research topics is "American Indian/Native
American" genealogy. Ms. Garrett has compiled a
very useful tool for any researcher who is deeply into
Cherokee ancestors. Using sources dating from
1817, she has compiled a list of several hundred
Cherokees, males and females, who were known in
the records by two different names. An example is ArNe-Le-Kah-Yah who was also known as Amy Scattered. The author also adds throughout this paperback short articles about Cherokee history and genealogy. However, Ms. Garrett failed to include a cross
reference index to the alternate names; thus, if one
was looking for someone not indexed, he will have to
search each page for the name. Nonetheless, this
work is a must for committed Cherokee family historians. [RPB]
Logan Co., Kentucky Deed Abstracts 1792·1813 by
Joyce Martin Murray, 2921 Daniel, Dallas, TX 75205,
softbound, 176 pages, full name, place and slave
index, $30.00 plus $3,00 s/h. The area covered in this
volume originally included all of Logan County and
part of present Simpson, Todd, Butler, Warren,
Muhlenberg, Christian, Allen, Hopkins, Barren, caldwell, Henderson, Livingston and Union Counties. The
largest number of selliers in this area came from the
parent state 01 Virginia, but many others came from
North and South Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania
and the Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana and Mississippi
Territories. Many came because of the granting by
Virginia of lands in the District set apart for Officers
and Soldiers of the Virginia Continental Line of the
American Revolution. Most properties lay within the
boundaries of Logan County at that time, but states of
origin are often included. (BJM)

paperback. The authors give their evaluation of the
main genealogy software products in order that you
may decide which product is best for you. Careful to
avoid any bias, they analyze the advantages and
disadvantages of each software product by applying
equal pertormance standards.
The "Comments"
section, in which the authors analyze the various
features of the program, is probably the most illuminating, considering both authors have written program manuals and know the subject inside out The
best advice is to read this book. it's a Consumer's
Guide to genealogy software! (BJM)
Rutherfords Of Arkansas In The Nineteenth Century by Marian C. Ledgerwood, P. O. Box 8081, Hot
Springs, AR 71909, published 1992, Acco bound, 213
pages, indexed. If you have any early Arkansas
Ruthertord connections, this book will be a must for
your collection. Mrs. Ledgerwood has thoroughly
documented the Ruthertords in Arkansas as they
relate to her line, as well as other Ruthertords for
which she has not been able to make a connection.
This makes the work a valuable Item in that It doesn't
simply focus on har line. She has organized the book
Into two parts, the first being the Ruthertords of
Arkansas, and the second being focused on the
Rutherfords of Washington County. The book is very
well organized and easy to follow, with several maps
included, An excellent bibliography is at the end which
details the sources Mrs. Ledgerwood used in the
work. There are excerpts from some letters and other
difficult to find resources, which enhances the work as
being something beyond simple static data gathering
from census records. The only minor flaw I found in
the book (and it is minor) is that there are multiple
indexes (one for Rutherfords, and one for everybody
else, one for place names, one for cemeteries, and
one for other variations of the Rutherford name).
Again, this only causes minor confusion. All in all, this
will be an excellent resource for those researching the
Ruthertord lines of Arkansas [EGL]

illustrated, indexed, 1992. Paper $14.95, cloth $22.95,
plus $3.00 shipping. Published by Oldbuck Pres~, P.
O. Box 1623, Conway, AR 72033. This is the first in a
new series of annotated cemetery books. Inside the
work is a map of the cemetery, directions to it and an

An attempt has been made to determine marriage
relationships as well as parental relationships for all

Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove: or the War in Arkansas, by William Baxter, 266 pp., illustrated, indexed,
1864 (reprinted 1993). Paper $19.95, Cloth $32.95,
plus $300 shipping. Published by Old buck Press,
Inc., P. O. Box 1623, Conway, AR 72033. This very
early work on the Civil War in Arkansas was published
before the war ended. Written from the Union perspective, it has much information on NOl1hwest
Arkansas. The book discusses battles, living condi·
tions, travel, health, education and many other items
of interest to the person researching life during this
difficult time in the south. Many names are mentioned
in connection with these battles and engagements,
not only in Arkansas, but Southern Missouri as well.
Somewhat scarce in any condition, the book has been
fully reproduced and indexed. A great addition to any
genealogical or Civil War collection. [BJM]
Georgia Baptists: Historical and Biographical, by
Jesse H. Campbell, 307 pp., indexed, 1847 (reprinted
1993). Paper $24.95, cloth $32.95, plus $3.00 ship.
ping. Published by Oldbuck Press, Inc., POBox
1623, Conway, AR. 72033. Religious records are
always a great resource for the family historian. The
publisher has located a very rare fiem, fully reproduced it and has given it a full index. The time period
concerns the earliest days of Georgia up to 1847.
Virginia and Nol1h and South Carolina are also men·
tioned. There are church associational histories as
well as many, many family histories and biographies
dating back to the early 1700s. With the index, hundreds of "hidden" names are revealed. [BJM]
