charm produc,on. 1987: 3rd Pan American Symposium held in Rio, hosted by Leite Lopes, CBPF Director: 1989: 4th Pan American Symposium held in Bariloche, Argen,na, organized by Mario Mariscok. 1992: 5th Pan American Symposium held in Cartagena, Colombia, hosted by Eduardo Posada and led to the "Cartagena Manifesto”. 80’s: New revival of HEP in La,n America: Par,cle Accelerators: In 1984, through the collabora,on of NSF and DOE, FERMILAB made available a grant of $300,000 dollars designed to be used to assist Physics in the five na,ons with major physics ac,vity. This was to be spent in journal subscrip,ons, payment of publica,on charges, spare parts and maintenance items for exis,ng equipments and per diem support for urgent short trips by physicists to the US. Later another $150,000 was added to the grant. This made possible to con,nue the research ac,vi,es in spite of the severe foreign currency squeeze in La,n American countries at this ,me . 1987: Herwig Schopper, Director of CERN, and Carlo Rubia, following Lederman inicia,ve, invited La,n American physicists to join CERN experiments. Experiment done at the Tagged Photon Laboratory – TPL Spin off: Parallel Compu,ng, ACP Project •  Use of “farms” of parallel computers based upon commercially available processors is largely an invenFon of the Fermilab Advanced Computer Project (ACP). • This technique has become widespread, both for on-­‐ and off-­‐line compuFng -­‐ for selecFng, acquiring, and processing the vast volumes of data. • The ACP computer was developed in the mid 1980’s based on a Motorola 68020 processor. VME crate of ACPs allowed dozens of processors to analyze individual events in parallel. •  For example the 50 terabytes of data colleted by experiment E791 was reconstructed in parallel on farms at Fermilab, the University of Mississippi, Kansas State University and the CPBF in Rio de Janeiro. MarFn Makler Dark Energy Survey •  The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is designed to probe the origin of the acceleraFng universe and help uncover the nature of dark energy by measuring the 14-­‐billion-­‐year history of cosmic expansion with high precision. •  More than 120 scienFsts from 23 insFtuFons in the United States, Brazil, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom are working on the project. •  This collaboraFon is building an extremely sensiFve 570-­‐Megapixel digital camera, DECam, and will mount it on the Blanco 4-­‐meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-­‐American Observatory high in the Chilean Andes. •  StarFng in late 2011 and conFnuing for five years, DES will survey a large swath of the southern sky out to vast distances in order to provide new clues to this most fundamental of quesFons.
