Utrecht is the beating heart of the Netherlands.
A city with an unequalled vitality. A medieval
city centre small enough to explore on foot. Large
enough to enjoy world-class festivals, modern
architecture, trendy shops and interesting
museums for days on end. Utrecht has a wealth
of culture and history. Utrecht bustles with life.
65,000 students. An extensive number of cultural
events. Friendly outdoor cafés. Delightful
restaurants. Utrecht has it all. Make yourself
comfortable. In a five-star hotel or an intimate
B&B.

Old city
with a big
heart
6
Utrecht is almost 2000 years old. Stroll
down the streets and along the canals in
the Utrecht Museum Quarter, the cultural
treasury in the very heart of the city and
sample the pleasant, intimate atmosphere
for which Utrecht is famous.
In the Middle Ages, Utrecht was
the ecclesiastical centre of the
Netherlands and its skyline was
dominated by dozens of church
towers. Today, the city has eight
medieval churches. With a height
of 112 metres, the Dom tower is
the highest church tower in the
Netherlands and the eye-catcher
of the ‘Dom city’, which functions
as a landmark throughout the
city.
Concise history
Around 47 AD, the Romans built
the Traiectum castellum (fortress)
to reinforce the northern border
of their empire along the Rhine
where the Domplein is now
located. Late 7th century, the
English missionary Willibrord
designed the fortress as a mission
and a small town developed. In
1122, the inhabitants of Utrecht
were awarded the privileges of
a city. This meant that they had
their own government, income
and approval to build a wall
around the city. Over the next
centuries, Utrecht developed into
a religious establishment and
trade underwent unprecedented
growth through the construction
of a medieval harbour complex
of canals, wharves and wharf
cellars. Utrecht remained the
largest and most important city
in the Netherlands until the 16th
century.
the Dom
The Dom tower is the pride of
Utrecht; the Dom cathedral was
also, until a tornado swept away
the nave on the summer evening
of 1 August 1674! How could
this happen? In order to collect
money for the construction of the
cathedral, clergymen travelled
through the diocese of Utrecht to
sell indulgences for absolution
or moderation of sins. After the
construction of the current Dom
church (1254-1517) and Dom tower
(1321-1382), there was no money
left and the nave was ‘finished’
without flying buttresses, with
shortened buttresses and a level
wooden ceiling instead of stone
vaults. Is this construction the
‘culprit’? Historians assume it was
bad luck; the whirlwind caused
lower pressure in the church and
thus brought about the collapse of
the nave. The contours of the nave
are depicted in the black cobbles
on the Dom square. The high trees
represent the then walls and
covering.

to see
From medieval canals, ancient churches to
modern architecture, Utrecht can rightfully be
referred to as a city of listed buildings. Explore
its culture and 2000-year-old history.

Utrecht
The Dom church draws large
crowds daily for a guided tour or a
moment of silence and peace. The
free Saturday afternoon concerts

word in Utrecht for over thirty

Climbing the
Dom tower
Climb the 465 steps of the Dom
tower with a guide. Reach the
top and get your reward via the
last 147 smaller steps which
are ingeniously incorporated
into one of the mainstays: a
spectacular view of Utrecht and
to Amsterdam, if the weather is
nice. Why do the steps turn to the
right? How did the Dutch term
for smashed originate? Hear all
about this and other facts and
anecdotes.
Explore 200 years
of hidden Utrecht
history in the medieval
cellars under the Dom
Square. A visit to the
Treasury starts with a
journey through time. A
tenminute film, which
is projected on the
walls and vaults in the
cellars, summarises
two thousand years of
history. One of the most
important draws is the
Roman Wall. Tour in
Dutch only, English tour
on request.

Rietveld Schröder
house
The Rietveld Schröder House; the masterpiece
by Gerrit Rietveld, highlight of ‘De Stijl’, icon
of the city of Utrecht and monument on the
World Heritage List, is an absolute must.
Utrecht architect Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964)
built it for Truus Schröder. This house is
the only building ever to have been realized
according to the architectonic principles of
artistic trend De Stijl. The typical Stijl colours
red, blue and yellow, combined with black,
white, grey and the relation between interior
and exterior and the unity between separate
furniture and fixed components in the design
are typical. A visit to the meticulously
devised Rietveld Schröder House is a true
discovery where each part of the house tells
its own story.
Visits include an audio tour. Reservations
required. Book via the link on the website.

van utrecht
2013 will be the 300th anniversary
of the Peace Treaty of Utrecht, the
first peace that was concluded at the
negotiation table instead of the
battlefield.
Utrecht is not the only event in the pipeline: the
local authority and province are hoping to make
Utrecht the 2018 Cultural Capital of Europe. We
will prepare the nomination for the 2018
Cultural Capital together.
For eighteen months, Utrecht was the host,
partner and stage for an international company
that determined Europe’s future. Art and culture,
meetings and dialogues between various cultures
played a major role during these peace negotiations in 1713. And now they once more form
the central theme in the international cultural
programme of the Peace Treaty of Utrecht in 2013
with the title of: ‘The Art of Making Peace’. There
are various activities and events throughout the
year, both in the city and province. For months,
celebrations will be held in the city as well as in
the province. The Stichting Vrede van Utrecht is
an initiative by the local authority and province
of Utrecht. Celebrating the Peace Treaty of
The year 2012 will be all about the preparations
for the ‘The Art of Making Peace’ festival to be
celebrated in September. From September 2012,
the first three exhibitions will open in the
Museum Quarter:’ Utrecht Garnizoenstad
(Utrecht garrison city in the Utrecht Archief),
‘Spelregels voor de Vrede’ (Rules of play for
peace in the University Museum) about everyday
diplomacy and human rights, and an exhibitions
about military lines of defence (the Dom Tower).

Orfeo ed Euridice in and on
the Paleis Soestdijk pond
From 25 May
The Orfeo ed Euridice opera by von Glück is the
ultimate ode to love. As Orfeo mourns the death of
his beloved Euridice, the god of love Amore decides
that he can get her back from the underworld under
the condition that he will not look at her until they
have returned to the world above… The contradiction
between the world above and the underworld plays
a major role. Director Jos Thie of the De Utrechtse
Spelen theatre company made these worlds visible by
having the story take place on, in and under the water.
Following the 2011 success, Orfeo ed Euridice can be
seen once more in the 2012 summer season.

OPEN GARDEN DAY UTRECHT
30 June
Hidden behind façades and gateways of the
historic city centre are the Utrecht city and
courtyard gardens. They are among the best
kept secrets of Utrecht: oases of tranquillity,
green and (garden) architecture. On Utrecht’s
Open Tuinendag (Open Garden Day), about 40
gardens of private individuals, museums and
other institutions are opened to the public.
All gardens are open to the public upon
presentation of a pass at € 12.50 per person.

Elf Fantasy Fair™: you’ll never dream alone!
21 & 22 April 2012
Over 25,000 costumes will be on display during the Elf Fantasy Fair, which will take place in and
around the largest castle in the Netherlands, Kasteel de Haar. Following the carnival in Venice,
this probably is the most extensive costume parade worldwide.
In 2012, emphasis will be on Egyptian gods and pharaohs, so an extensive number of anubises
and osirises are expected to show on 21 & 22 April, in addition to Star Wars Storm troopers,
Lord of the Rings elves, Twilight Vampires and Mad Max vehicles. While getting a mead beer at
the Viking ship next to the medieval market, see how an eight-metre-high pyramid of straw is
created. Medieval soldiers from Germany and the Ukraine will enter into full contact combat. A
small group of Huns on horses are attacked by the cannons of a stray gang of pirates of captain
Flint. Anything is possible at the Elf Fantasy Fair that will be held for the twelfth time and is
commonly known as the Kingdom of Elfia among fans. Special guests will include ‘Darth Vader’
creator Brian Muir, Brian ‘Dark Crystal’ Froud and Eragon author Christopher Paolini. On the
main stage (which has been transformed into a colossal time machine) bands from all over
Europe will play folk and medieval music. Tickets are available at www.elffantasyfair.com € 12.50
(children) and € 19.95 (adults).

city and province should be aware
of the city’s aspirations to be
the 2018 Capital of Culture! The
event is preceded by an opening
programme on Saturday evening
24 March in Hoog Catharijne.
Utrecht dances
Sunday 3 June
Visitors of ‘Utrecht dances’ will
naturally start thinking positive
thoughts’ (source: NRC newspaper,
30 May 2011).
When this magnificent Sunday was
held for the first time in 2010, it
was immediately proclaimed the
best city event in the Netherlands.
The second time it was held, even
more people danced, young and old
and of various colour and posture.
For the third time, focus will be on
‘creating and talent development’.
‘Utrecht dances 3’ will be preceded
by a wonderful prelude on
Saturday evening.
Quay concert
Sunday 8 July
Sailing boats through the
Oudegracht, music from the quays,
a final concert at the Weerdsluis,
bobbing boats and thousands
of people enjoying themselves
on the water and the quays: this
is Utrecht as a singular and
magnificent backdrop from the
water.
Uitfeest
Sunday 2 September
Traditionally, this is the festive
kick-off for the new cultural
season, when cultural institutions
open their doors and visitors are
allowed a foretaste of events and
can meet.
Young, younger,
youngest
Sunday 28 October
How do young people perceive
older ones and vice versa? When
are you old? And when are you
young? What is the value of
wisdom and maturity? Is there
exchange between the generations,
or just a sudden transition from
one world to another? These and
other questions are the basis for a
programme about the value of old
and older and will expressly be
targeted at young and younger, old
and older.
Vocal racket
Sunday 16 December
We may sometimes forget, but
we can all sing, or at least enjoy
people who can! From close
harmony, gospel, pop, rap, crooner
songs to soul and jazz. Have you
ever dreamt of singing along in
one of the audience choirs, doing
an audition or taking a singing
workshop? All this is possible
during ‘Vocal Racket’! Those
listening and dancing quietly will
also come into their own during
‘Vocal Racket’.

region
Surrounded by the Utrecht Heuvelrug,
the Vechtstreek and the Green Heart, Utrecht is
located in the very garden of the central part
of the Netherlands. Enjoy the countryside and
rich history the region has to offer.

The Utrechtse Heuvelrug
National Park
Cycle through
the Golden Age
As a sumptuous boulevard, the Vecht river
meanders between Amsterdam and Utrecht,
framed by hydrangeas, high trees and austere
lawns with tea pavilions as preludes of a
view of the magnificent country estates. Rich
Amsterdam merchants used to flee the city
to relax at the Vecht. The busy boat traffic on
the river and in the locks provides a
pleasant picture.
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park allows
for wonderful walking and cycling tours across
the lateral moraine, taking in moors, castles and
country estates in the forelands and wooded
areas. Put on your walking shoes for the 11-km
trip starting at the picturesque Amerongen castle
and climb to the highest point of the Utrechtse
Heuvelrug, the 69-metre high Amerongen
mountain to enjoy the beautiful view of the
Gelderse Vallei. Then follow a second climb to the
‘lonely oak’ on the eastern summit, with a view
of Veenendaal. A total of 56 walking routes have
been mapped, varying from 2 to 21 kilometres.
A number of bicycle and walking routes are
available at Tourist Information Offices, local
catering establishments and Dutch Forestry
Commission barns.

Experience the Water
Defence Line
Numerous places and constructions in the
landscape are reminiscent of the Dutch Water
Defence Line, some sturdy and distinct, such as
the fortresses; and other hidden elements, such
as dykes, casemates, inundation canals and
sluices. Many defensive works have been given
a new function: restaurant, theatre, conference
centre or museum. In and around Utrecht, see
what the Netherlands’ secret weapon is all
about.

Practical information
Station area & Accessibility
Utrecht is centrally located and the ideal operating
base for a (city) visit to the Netherlands. Amsterdam
and Schiphol Airport are just 30 minutes by train;
Rotterdam and The Hague at 45 minutes. Daily
international trains from and to Brussels (2 hours),
Cologne (2.5 hours) and Paris (3,5 hours). For more
info, go to www.ns.nl and www.nshighspeed.nl
The station area is undergoing a ‘facelift’ with the
ultimate goal to combine the station and the old city
centre. Inconvenience is limited as much as possible
and Utrecht remains easily accessible.
